First time here but will not be the last! Stopped in to grab some desserts to-go. It was 1:30 and they were already sold out if their Cowboy Cookies so I took that as a good sign to come back and grab one of those when I need a cookie fix! I was there for their pumpkin cheesecake roulade and their pumpkin caramel cheesecake roulade and they did not disappoint. Both were absolutely delicious. They have an area before going into the restaurant for grab-n-go goodies and people behind the counter to get you backed goods as well as food items such as soups, meats, prepared salads almost like a deli. There are also frozen cases with frozen items and baked goods out in the counter to grab. Service was nice from the ladies behind the counter. Can't wait to try out the restaurant soon! read more

Nice breakfast/lunch spot near Jamestown Settlement. They also have a dessert counter where you can grab cookies, cakes, and other goodies to go. Employees were friendly. They have separated seating areas, but weren't busy during our visit. Inside is very casual. The BBQ sandwich was really good. I added the small side of coleslaw to it. The included potato salad side was fairly bland, except for the pickle flavor. About $15 for this meal. I stole a few French fries from the Mrs, which were good, as was the green goddess dressing that came with her wrap. She said the wrap was also very good. Most meals ranged from $10-15 on the menu. Carrot Tree is such a welcoming place for lunch or bakery treats. It's a real locals spot and a gem! The menu offers breakfast and lunch, with sandwiches, salads, soup, and quiche. I especially like their side dish of carrot salad, which contains pickled carrots in a sweet vinegar. During our most recent visit, we ordered the First Ladies lunch, which included a piece of spinach quiche (they offered other quiche versions too) and a side, for which I ordered the carrot salad. Many of my friends ordered the sampler, which came on a bed of lettuce with scoops of different salads, like tuna, chicken, egg, and pimento. Another friend ordered the wrap special, which was peaches and chicken. Yummy!! The restaurant is larger than it looks from the entrance, as it has another room towards the back. It's brightly lit with cute rabbit- and carrot-themed decorations. The bakery and prepared food to take home areas offer a wide selection of cakes, cookies, pies, etc. and meals like quiches, pot pies, etc. See photos. First time here, after wife received several recommendations. Place is much better sized than we were led to believe, with plenty of seating. Place a Was busy, but not overly so, between 1/2 & 2/3 full. First indication of things going awry was standing at the hostess station for twenty seven minutes (with obvious seating available). Finally seated and were able to order minutes later. Plenty of time to examine the decor, which was tastefully decorated for the season. Waters arrived (no lemon in mine for some reason, although both of us requested-guess wife just looks nicer!). I ordered the Brunswick stew and wife had the breakfast croissant. Bowl of stew was small - felt more like a cup size. Would have liked some hot sauce, but after food was dropped off, waitress never reappeared. Wife's breakfast sandwich was very nice. Overall, seemed seriously understaffed, which affected all aspects of the meal. read more

I have seen this place for many years and finally decided to try it out. I entered through their bakery entrance, which was attached to their restaurant. Clean, organized, but a bit small. There were four customers there and space was limited. Food items were clearly priced and there was a decent selection of sweets and prepackaged salads. A young girl, very polite, was serving other customers and just my luck, the older woman served me. She was rude and disinterested with helping me. I was rushed through my order even though I expressed being there for the first time. I purchased tuna salad and ham salad. The labels showed price per pound, so I asked for 1/4 pound. I was told they only sell at 1/2 and 1 pound containers. Agreed to 1/2 pound option. These pre-packed containers are not exactly weighted so the price will be much higher than a true 1/2 pound, which increases the price of the items. It was a Wednesday when I purchased the salads, and noticed there were dated tags showing the date they were made; Tuna on Sunday and Ham salad on Monday. Tuna salad was watery and basic tuna. Nothing more, nothing less. Tuna and mayo. The ham salad was bland, and again nothing more, nothing less. I also ordered a lemon bar, brownie, and "sample" carrot cake, as it was called. The pictures I've included do not do justice to show the tiny portion sized desserts. Lemon bar was hard, dry, and stale. The brownie was dry and hard. The sample carrot cake bite was literally one bite. Flavor was okay, but for $3.25, I'd like more than one bite. This place is pricey and the quality of the items I purchased are not worth the expense. I will not be returning. Poor customer service, pricey menu, inaccurate advertised pricing, and perhaps stale/old desserts. read more

Sweet tea was great, food was extremely bland and overpriced. 40 dollars for an egg salad sandwich and chicken salad sandwich. Waitress attended to the table but was quite busy with all the other tables. Could have had a bit of music to drown out all the talking as the tables were in a open room. My friend and I were blessed with another wonderful meal and experience here yesterday during lunchtime. Our timing was perfect as we were immediately seated and then the crowd rolled in. However, even with the large crowd the attention we received was perfect, as was the food. Our terrific waitress and also the owner checked with us multiple times to see if anything was needed and on how our food tasted to us. All-in-all our visit here was perfect and we look forward to our next visit to Carrot Tree. In between my visits we will very much enjoy the tasty desserts and soup I brought home. Had a friend pick up a picnic lunch from here. She sent us a PDF of the menu and husband and I decided what looked good and we all headed out for a day on the water. I ordered the ham biscuits with a side of orzo salad. DH had the Alliance sandwich which comes with a side. Friends got a salad sampler platter which included their pimento cheese. I enjoyed my biscuits, especially with a bit of that pimento cheese smeared on them. The Alliance sandwich was gigantic and he found 1/2 of it be very filling. I think this place is a great stop! Walk in and it seems more like a quick stop for baked goods. Not very comfy cozy feeling for a small restaurant. Was not crowded on a Saturday morning should have been our first clue. Menu is small not much for offerings but as the carrot cake was recommended I started with a carrot muffin. Wow I wish I had ordered coffee I was choking it was so dry. Not sure why it was recommended so dry, we're there even carrots in it. Ordered breakfast burrito it was ok but honestly for the price you would think you would get a side of fruit or something. I haven't been in since they moved to the new location, and now I feel bad because I've been missing out! The new restaurant is a dramatic change not only from the one that was here before, but from their old location as well. Bright, open, and comfortable. Once I saw chicken and waffles, I knew I had to have it. Since the server told me that the mapley syrup was not real thing, I told her I didn't need any. The meal was delicious without it. The chicken was both crisp and juicy, the waffle both crunchy and fluffy. I would have been hard pressed to do it better myself. My Bride also got the chicken and waffle, and hers disappeared just as fast as did mine. Which was fine, because it gave us an excuse to get a slab of coconut cream pie, my secret weakness. If there's one thing for which Carrot Tree is justly famous, it's their desserts. Over the past 20 years, I dare say that I have sampled pretty much all of them, and there's not a one that I wouldn't buy again. The coconut cream pie is delicious, reminding me very much of the church lady pies of my youth. I will say, I'm not going to be getting the coffee here again. It was Not Good- I, who drink 12-14 cups of black coffee a day, added 2 creams and a sugar and still couldn't make myself finish it. And to add insult to injury, the menu prices for my coffee and Bride's hot tea were $2.95 each, but we had to pay through the Toast app via a QR code on the check, and we were charged $3.00 apiece. Sure, it's only 10¢, but aside from the fact that I dislike being misled, if they're pulling this on everyone's bills, it really adds up. $29.99 before tax and tip. Should have been $29.89, of course. TL;DR - this is the perfect place to go for dessert. If they have the chicken and waffles, stay for lunch. But maybe stick with water to drink. read more

About a 2.5: I've had Carrot Tree Kitchens on my list for quite a while, so I was really excited to finally try this place out! I was disappointed as I thought the staff would be a bit more welcoming and offer more suggestions on the baked items they offer :( There is a café off to the side, where you can dine in for breakfast as well (menus are available by the cabinet up at the front). The 'bakery' itself is very dimly-lit, and they offer saran-wrapped plastic plates of sliced carrot cakes and to-go boxes of samplers of their desserts. They also have whole cakes for purchase. Since I was already here, I bought a slice of their 'famous' carrot cake. I did ask whether they bake a fresh cake everyday, and the answer was quite ambiguous - that they bake fresh almost everyday... I had a feeling that it was at least a couple days old. Either way, the carrot cake itself was nutty and on the sweet side, with a thin layer of the cream cheese frosting. It's an okay-tasting carrot cake, but with a combination of the experience and the vibe, it was just alright. Really tasty Mother's Day lunch here! Forgot Yorktown would be a mob scene, only exacerbated by a cruise ship that had pulled up and unloaded passengers. SO - we ended up at Carrot Tree by default. I always wanted to go to it when it was in the cute little teal house up the Jill, but I just couldn't manage it on my visits with family while I was in town. ANYWAY - so happy we landed on their new patio! They were already out of chicken salad and crepes by the time we sat down at 1:30p, so those must be good (??). We heard about the ham biscuits and went that route. I got the Jamestown - loving the sugar-cured ham with the chutney, apples, and cheddar. The chutney didn't overwhelm the other flavors at all, and the ham was cooked perfectly. I also enjoyed their house salad - fresh greens, cucumbers, carrots, tho I could've done without shredded cheddar and fried French's onions. Got mom a piece of carrot cake to go, and she just called to say it was "pretty good." Mom had a ham biscuit and potato salad and loved it. The potato salad was made with red bliss potatoes, mayo, and a good amount of fresh dill. Yum. Fresh-squeezed lemonade for both of us. Perfect! Not too sweet. A nice meal. Servers were overwhelmed by the crowds, and I didn't care for the cheap, black plastic plates - but looking beyond that (easily done), it was really quite good. read more

For lunch, their sampler salad plate, chicken, tuna and ham salad is a Southern staple. Get it with their orzo pasta salad and ask for extra crackers, you'll need them. If you haven't had ham salad, just trust me, it's good. Alternately I've had quiche of the day or the Wingfield. Breakfast, it's just yummy, enjoy! Ham biscuits, quiche or grandaddys breakfast are all good. This is a quaint family restaurant, they offer old time sandwiches, with amazing baked goods up front to go. Great local restaurant! Service was quick and the food wasn't very heavy which is great if you're watching what you eat. We had the house hash and coque madam. Both were delicious. Their gator tots are also great. It has some black pepper on it which gives it a small kick. The cheesy grits were good too but on the small side. They had 3 or 4 cupcakes which looked pretty good, they had lemon bars and brownies and a few other items including whole layer cakes.
