Surfing has shaped a culture around the world, and there is a strong case that Newport is the epicenter and genesis of that culture. (The Echo Beach) And Russell Surfboards is one of the pillars (along with the Froghouse) in surfing culture. I just can't recommend supporting this shop enough. When you go inside, you instantly realize this is a surf shop. They survived all this time by selling surfboards, not clothing like Jacks. When clothing brands like Billabong, Quiksilver, etc started renting out "surf shops," it ruined the authentic soulfulness of a surf shop. JP did such a great job caring the torch and Russell would be proud to see the way he kept the spirit of the shop alive. If you like the idea of supporting a small roots company, buy a surfboard from Russell.

I was nervous about finding the instructor on the beach but the directions given to me were so clear that I was able to locate them with no problem! The instructor was so kind and patient to answer all of my questions (even ones regarding sharks). The lesson included instructions about the ocean, surf safety, and surf etiquette. I really appreciate the fact that the instructor would stay in the water helping my son and others as they tried to catch waves. My son was so thrilled about the entire experience; he was smiling from ear-to-ear. The most exciting part was being able to get several pictures of him surfing. I went to Epic BMX yesterday because I needed help with a bike crank arm. I only needed one crank…read morearm replaced, but before really looking it over, I was told the pedal was stripped, then that the crank arm was stripped as well. The shop tried to sell me both crank arms, then said the chain would not fit the new arms, so I would also need a new chain and another part. I was told the size was traditional, which made me question why so many extra parts were suddenly needed. When I asked if we could just replace the one broken arm, he kept saying the arms "wouldn't match." I had to keep asking for clarification before it became clear that he meant they would not match visually, not that they would not fit or function together. I was not worried about how it looked -- I just needed the bike to work. Then I was told the other arm was bent and that everything should be replaced. The quote was $120 just for the crank arms. After checking online, traditional-size crank arms were around $20. I understand shops need to mark up parts and charge for labor, but this felt excessive and like I was being sold parts I did not actually need. Unfortunately, I will not be coming back. This could have been a chance to earn a long-term customer, but the experience left me feeling taken advantage of.
