We arrived at 6:03 a.m.--just three minutes after the address was posted--yet there were already 25 people on the list. No one was around the house or double parked, which makes it obvious the owner shares the address with friends or frequent customers before it's posted. It's also clear the company caters to dealers, both through this practice and the low prices they give them. This is disappointing and unfair to the families who trust them to handle their loved ones' estates. Please be cautious--other companies will provide fairer prices and more transparency. I will not be returning to any future sales.

He's always patient, happy to answer questions, and never ever pressures anyone to buy anything. It actually feels like you're visiting a collector's den or small museum where most things just happen to be for sale. I've learned a lot about textiles, woven blankets, and handmade quilts from Kingsley and am thankful for the time he took to get his newly acquired "baby" out of the back to show me. We both have a fascination with learning how things are made and we're dazzled by the work on this one. Speaking of "how things are made": he knows a guy named Cort that fixes and cleans old pocket and wrist watches. I bought an antique pocket watch from him a few years ago at a great price and it keeps time perfectly. I had also requested/mentioned I was looking for a specific vintage watch and he found one! Once again: great price. There have been slight issues with watch repair only because of the pandemic making many parts hard to find. I heard that the main source to get things may be or has already closed for good. It's rare to find people and items like the ones you'll find in this shop. Stop by and you'll find something interesting and beautiful, and most likely learn something new!

Then I met Pete Banchieri from Alameda Estate Sales, and he completely changed my perspective. Pete took on one of the most challenging estate sales I've ever encountered. The home had been owned by the same family for more than 40 years, and it was filled with decades' worth of belongings. What impressed me most was Pete's incredible work ethic and attention to detail. He spent weeks carefully sorting valuables​, donations, ​selling certain things online, arranging for appropriate items to be auctioned, and researching historical documents and collectibles, organizing the contents, and thoughtfully preparing everything for the sale.​ Because I had the opportunity to visit the property several times throughout the process, I was able to see firsthand the amount of work, care, and professionalism Pete and his team brought to the job. It was awkward to watch and then- when I went to check out, it got worse. I went to the reg with 3 things in hand- 1 print marked $20, 1 tin marked $1, and an unmarked vintage tray. I asked about the tray- he quoted $10 bucks. Ok, cool. I asked if he would come down in price on the print- he snapped at me no. Ok, I said- I'll just go with these 2 things. He tallied things- gave me $10 for the tray as he said, and quoted $3 for the tin. I said "but it is marked $1" (which it was, in marker, on the bottom). He snapped "That's not MY dollar!"- as if I changed the price? WTF? So I said I'd skip the tin. I started to ask about some drawers he had in the house, and he blew his top and said the price is the price and that there is no haggling at estate sales. Well, Peter- not yours, for sure, but then post signage, please, as many of the other sales in town have CLEARLY STATED POLICIES posted. So I looked at him stunned by his blowup, and then started to change my mind about the tray- which he then yanked out of my hands and put behind the register, and then he IGNORED ME to snap at other people trying to pay. I stepped behind the other people to get back in line to purchase the tray because I DID like it and it is unique. Once he finished with the other people, he picked up the tray and the tin, shoved them at me and told me to take them and go away. I said I didn't want to not pay and again, he had moved on to other people. So I paid him via Venmo. And he looked surprised. You might treat people like shit, Peter, but I paid for what I purchased. If you hate dealing with people, and hate the business, maybe you shouldn't profit from the FAMILIES OF DEAD PEOPLE, PETER.

I consigned a pair of jade earrings to Michaan's for sale along with other items, and made it clear…read morethat for the earrings I wanted an auction reserve of $250; this reserve was duly recorded on the paperwork that was filled out for the items. Jill Fenichell, with whom I was working, noted that Marie Elise Coronado, the in-house jewelry appraiser, would have to agree to this reserve for it to go forward; but certainly did not note that there would be any repercussions beyond the consignment not going forward should Ms. Coronado not agree. Ms. Coronado later contacted me and said she couldn't grant my request, and the reserve would be $200. Okay, the contract states that reserves depend on agreement by the parties, so fine, I just asked when I could come by to pick up the earrings. At this point she took the arrogant stance that if I wanted the earrings back I would have to pay the fee for when consignors reverse the decision to consign items to Michaan's, and further claimed that only under restricted circumstances may consignors specify reserves for their items -- which is absolutely NOT what is specified by the language in the contract for reserves. I appealed to Ms. Fenichell for help, noting that good-faith dealing required that what had been established between Ms. Fenichell and myself must be honored, and received no help. In the end, I asserted control of the situation by invoking another clause of the contract that specifies that the day and place an item is sold must be by mutual agreement of the consignor and Michaan's, and stated that I would not consent to any particular circumstances of sale until this matter was resolved. At that point, Ms. Coronado agreed to my requested reserve. With a company that had the intention of dealing in good faith with its consignors, none of this nonsense could have occurred. Michaan's proceeded to violate its own contract by selling all of my remaining items at days and places of Michaan's own choosing, without obtaining, or even requesting, my agreement. In particular, my set of sterling silver was sold separately from its case, against my wishes.
