I have never had bad food or service ever! We go here at least once or twice a month and love it every time. I always get the stuffed spud with pulled pork. Great service every time never have to wait to long for a table. They also have a small little bar area to sit at. read more

CarterQue BBQ catered our wedding and we have been getting an endless stream of compliments from guests, both about the delicious food and the super charismatic and helpful staff. The dinner was easily the best barbecue we've EVER had! Their sauces are to die for. The mac 'n cheese was so creamy and I could have gone back for thirds or fourths. Just as important to us - their staff was so incredibly kind and professional. They prioritized our comfort above all else - saving us popular treats that were going fast, accommodating guests' dietary needs with grace, and even checking in on us to ensure we wanted for nothing! When they asked whether there was anything we needed, they truly meant it and were ready to assist at all times. However, we never had to take them up on this offer because they thought of everything before we even had a chance to ask!!! We could not have dreamed of a better team or menu for our special day. This place was tasty! There aren't many places around me that really specialize in BBQ but they've done a great job. It was also really cool that they offer a beer brewed right in Mt Airy which is a darker more stout like beer that I certainly enjoyed. The fried pickles are nice and crunchy with just enough crust on them. For my entree I had the two meat platter with the sausage link and beef brisket along with mac n cheese and a big baked potato and cornbread. All some of my favorite things that really stick to your stomach. I got the black raspberry and some other sauce that were so tangy and delicious. All in all a great place for some down home food. I would just say that the wait staff could be a little more attentive but other than that, no complaints! read more

This place is off the hook!! They definitely know how to cook pork. Their BBQ sauces are amazing as well, especially their raspberry flavored BBQ sauce. I've always told people that the best BBQ in the DC metro area is "Carolina Brothers Pit Barbeque" even though Carterque is outside of the DC metro area this beats their BBQ big time. I love this joint! Buzz and Ned's in Richmond is my absolute favorite but I'll need to go back and revisit since it's been a while and compare the two. I went to Carterque this weekend with my family who was in town from PA (6 of us) and sat outside with Madison. I had a disappointing experience at Carterque once before a few years ago and was not looking forward to this visit. Boy was I impressed this time! I'm not sure if the rest of my family liked their meals, I could barely hear them over my praises! I got the Smoked Brisket Salad, it was incredible. Sometimes brisket can be a little dry, but this salad seemed to be all of the delicious fatty edges. I will definitely be back! PS: I wish there were collard greens on the menu! read more

Came on a beautiful Sunday afternoon with my fiancé and baby. We sat outside on the patio which was nice and spacious. Bathroom is nice and clean for changing baby. Pulled pork sandwich was on par with other bbq joints, but nothing special. My fiancé got the pit beef sandwich and I thought it was better than mine. Good flavor and good sized portion. The fried pickles we got for an appetizer was the best part in my opinion. I'd come again if in the area, but wouldn't drive the half hour from our home just for the bbq. I know the locals love this place so we have tried it 3 times and have been disappointed three times. The meat has been consistently over cooked and dry. Everything else is pretty average. We ordered 50 wings for the Super Bowl and they were essentially inedible- should have take them back. It's fine but we like Smokin Hot in Glenwood better. read more

I was not impressed by the food at catercue barbecue and grill, to say the least. The ribs were absolutely horrible. The baked potato with brisket was dry and seemed old, disgusting. Lots of places do ribs and some are just okay but if you want ribs that fall off the bone and you are in good old Mount Airy,MD turn in here, you won't be disappointed, just a little chubbier when you leave. Decent BBQ. Their sides are lacking. Broccoli appeared to be out of a frozen bag. Fries are generic. The BBQ itself was pretty good, especially considering how crappy BBQ is in Maryland. Sometimes I think they microwave their meat (not fresh). The black raspberry sauce is amazing though. The hype is real about that damn sauce. I've gone in to buy bottles of it. Seriously. That good. It's hard to suggest this place over Black Hog BBQ which is reasonably close (and is by far the best BBQ around by leaps and bounds imo). read more

We hired CarterQue to cater our wedding and could not have been more pleased! Colleen and her team were professional, friendly, and kind during the entire process. The food was excellent - we got so many compliments. When the pandemic hit and we had to postpone our May wedding until October, Colleen worked with us. She was always prompt in her communications, answered all of our questions, and made suggestions for us to consider as well. You can tell she's experienced at this and it was so nice to have someone so competent and organized working behind the scenes for us. On our wedding day, her team was phenomenal. CarterQue had COVID rules in place and we were so happy with everything they did in order to help keep everyone safe. I ordered pulled pork as take out as we were having a small gathering. I usually use a different bbq restaurant in Frederick but was unable to get there that day, so we tried Carterque as it is much closer. I found it very odd that they charge extra for bbq sauce. The pork was ok, but very dry because it had no sauce whatsoever on it. I definitely had to doctor it up before serving it; as it was not awesome on it's own. I realize they are allowing for people to choose their own bbq sauce, but why the up-charge for take out? Maybe they should ask if customers want bbq sauce on it or plain, as it would make a difference in the taste for sure. That's like ordering spaghetti and being charged for tomato sauce. Carterque, if you see this, maybe you could have a house bbq sauce at no extra charge and then an up-charge for speciality sauces? Just a suggestion. read more

I'm a huge fan of BBQ. HUGE! I'm also a huge fan of independent non-chain barbecue joints and try them as often as possible. Unfortunately this place didn't completely impress me. The restaurant itself super clean and the staff were wonderful. We were seated immediately and the waitress was efficient and a great communicator. I got the brisket and a half rack of ribs. The brisket was quite good with a great flavor of whatever rub that was used before barbecuing it. The ribs however left a lot to be desired. It may have been my particular order but they were dry and hard. Not good heard, like burnt ends, but grainy and dry. They had a good selection of sauces and the sweet tea was great. So the only reason I'm giving it a four-star is because of those ribs. Maybe one day I'll try it again and I'll get a fresh batch. Definitely worth checking out though. read more

We haven't had a bad meal yet and we've been there more then 4 times. The only problem we have had was them leaving out a side in our carry-out order. Delish! My four year old and I loved our pulled pork sandwiches. (His kids meal pork sliders came w choice of applesauce, sweet potato fries among other items and milk.) My pulled pork on potato bun sandwich came with corn bread- wonderful- and salad (or fries, chips, etc.). My husband loved his smoked sausages. Because it was our first time and we were obvious about not knowing the sauces, our wonderful waitress (Jess? I think?) offered to bring a sample of all four sauces. After using the sample to decide what we wanted, my four year old literally ate all of the samples by himself. He loved them! His favorite was the sweet and tangy. Mine was the blackberry. But. Excellent friendly service! Can't say enough about the simple authentic kindness of our server/hostess, Jackie. Was on a crutch and she asked if the booth was too far to walk....rare attribute! After ordering, she made a couple of suggestions to the lunch special. I had the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and side of potato salad which came with fries (no substitutions). Black Raspberry BBQ sauce had perfect balance of sweet and savory smokiness---can image it being perfect on ham! The Sweet & Tangy BBQ reminded me of the perfect Western North Carolina and it's balanced vinegary & subtle smokey tomato-light sauces was also perfect. Potato salad was a bit wet and a little on the heavy mayo and wasn't set and creamy but did have a nice flavor. Ice tea was balanced as well...I did half sweet and unsweetened mix. I have heard so many great things about this place, so perhaps I walked in with expectations that were too high, but I really wasn't impressed. The only reason this place isn't getting 1-2 stars is because it is is Mt. Airy, and I have perhaps been spoiled by good city food. My 1st mistake however was ordering a cheeseburger at a BBQ joint, so that's on me, but nevertheless it was not good. I don't hate greasy food, but it was SO greasy that the bun was so soggy it was falling apart. The french fries were also McDonald's french fries, except McDonald's french fries are way better because they're hot crispy and salty. These french fries were none of those things. My boyfriend did get BBQ though: pulled pork. I'm not sure how his pork was but I know his sides were also disappointing. The corn bread was basically boxed and had little flavor, as did the macaroni and cheese. The staff however is VERY friendly, and so are the customers. People are keen to strike up conversation with you at the bar, which btw does not have a good beer menu (but what place does in Mt. Airy)? This could still be an OK place to eat at if you live within walking distance because on a nice day main street is quite a pleasant street to stroll down. I would normally suggest sitting on the patio but there were a lot of flies at this joint. Grab some desert at jimmy cone down the block, especially on cruise night. read more

Between my wife and I we had hush puppies, wings, a carterque burger and rotisserie chicken with mac and cheese, cornbread and house fries. All of it was really tasty, and you get a good amount of food for the money. Definitely as good as, if not better than, other BBQ joints we've been to. Highly recommended. read more

Actually I would rate this place three and a half stars. Very friendly staff!! Some lady there really kept her eye on my table and constantly checked to see how I was doing. Plenty of BBQ choices on the menu. I got the Maryland specialty which is some thin sliced beef. While I enjoyed the sandwich (lunch special, sandwich, fries and drink for $8.00) but I was sorry afterwards that I didn't get the beef brisket. They had chicken, ham and even a hot turkey sandwich. I liked everything but was disappointed in their selections of dessert. I also asked about the corn bread and as I figured it was more like cake with plenty of sugar in it. So I have a hell of a lot of nerve reviewing a barbeque joint since I have not eaten meat in 16 years. But here goes. I went a few weeks back to connect with some relatives we haven't seen in a while and we really had a nice time. It's in the historic part of Mount Airy near some neat little shops, so a nice place to go for a relaxing afternoon. I did have catfish for the first time, and had some really good potato salad and hush puppies. The rest of the fam went traditional and had the ribs and chicken, and all raved about the food. The owner has won lots of awards for his sauces, and they were pretty tasty. Now for the big highlight for me, for what I lack in a taste for flesh, I make up for with a voracious appetite for sugar. The brownies and cupcakes were soooooo good. We took a box home - one of each cupcake since we just couldn't make up our minds, and the apple-filled cupcake was my favorite, followed by the chocolate cream cheese cupcake. The buttercream icing made my blood thick for days, but it was worth it. So get out of DC for a few hours. Go eat barbecue. And leave room for a cupcake. read more
