Carton Brewing, yet another brewery to work off of my list that it out on the East Coast. So very grateful to try breweries this far away from home since I am based in the West Coast. For this brewery Steve and I enjoyed their Boat Beer which was a Session IPA. I do love a good session from time to time and it's a type of beer you can more than one of without getting too buzzy. The flavor highlights with this beer that we had are that of a typical IPA( or some anyway) which is hoppy, citrusy and with a clean snapped finish. It's light and smooth like much of the session beer types are. Good experience with this beer and we'll worth returning to and exploring more of their beer options. read more

The best tasting room, we loved that we could bring the dogs inside into the air conditioning. The beers were good, I had the whaler, a New England IPA, and my husband had the Bic, a European lager. We enjoyed ourselves chilling out, sipping beer and playing cribbage. There are games for patrons and tons of great merchandise. Had the chance to pop in for some beer. My friend hadn't been here in years so we made it a special trip during our "Girls' Weekend" The brewery is very clean and the service was quick. We appreciated being able to get samples before ordering our full glass. I also loved that the bigger the alcohols content the smaller the glass. Truly drives home safe consumption. If you're a wine drinker looking to dip your toe in the craft brew game, definitely try Larry. I enjoyed the sample of maple beer, Willet Waffle. So the beers don't lean toward my taste and I still found two I enjoyed. What I really enjoyed is the space they have for the tasting room. It's like hanging in a friends living room and I just want to go back and do it again. Very good service and doing a beer flight was fun for me. read more

Very unassuming from the outside but once you get in, you get a classical library type of feel which is interesting given they are a quarter mile from the water. The taproom itself is just OK to me because I prefer a more laid back outdoor feel and this is inside and again, feels like a library (not necessarily a bad thing). Carton is a very well known brewery and their beers are pretty solid. I like the Whaler a bit of a hazy IPA or Boat beer which is a session. Beer is solid - def worth a stop. read more

Carton is probably the most laid back brewery ive ever been to, also not to mention the staff is beyond friendly here. you can only buy pints of maybe 2 of 3 diff types of beer they have (at least the weekend i went), otherwise you buy a flight for $5 which gives you 6 decent sized tastings. you can choose as many or as little of the beers as you want, i actually repeated 2. they give you carton brewery poker chips which you receive after you pay (they take cards), and you give one up each time you drink. i like this system because it was easy to figure out whats up next and allowed you to pace yourself. my biggest complaint is the lack of seating. they only have 2 couches to sit on, basically you can stand and fart around and drink upstairs where the music and couches are, but its tough to grab a seat. downstairs is the very clean bathroom, along with the staff and stuff to buy. i liked carton alot because it felt like i was at a house party sampling beer, very relaxed and fun. unfortunately, they only have 2 beers i truly enjoyed. hopefully in the future they will branch out their beer brewing so i can enjoy more =D read more

I'm really glad that there are pictures of what Carton looks like on the outside, because we never would have known where it was otherwise. Came here last Saturday with three friends at around 12:30, and the place was pretty empty when we got there. Since it was our first time, we took the tour, which was maybe 10 minutes long. It's always interesting to see how different breweries function, so we enjoyed this one, which is really a little microbrew. From there, we went up to the tasting room, which legitimately looks like a loft apartment. Since we were there early, we grabbed one of the couches, and then went up for our free sample of Boat Beer, and each bought 5 tokens (for $5), which enabled us to try 5 of the different beers they had on tap. Carton experiments with a lot of unique flavors, so it was really fun to get a chance to try so many different types of beer. They also have the "tippy," which is their small batch brew that is constantly rotating. I was a little hungover from the night before, but even so, I loved the Boat, Canyon, Whale, the double IPA, and stout on the Tippy. My girl friend and I ended up just drinking Canyon towards the end - it was such a solid choice and a definite crowd pleaser. We were there for 2-3 hours, and the place got PACKED towards the end - it was definitely worth it risking the fact of looking like legitimate alcoholics by showing up as close to opening as possible, since we were able to secure the couch for the duration of our time there. We had a phenomenal time at Carton and will absolutely be back. read more

I was so excited to come to one of NJ's most iconic breweries! They have been around for years, I just haven't had the time to come to the area. It is actually hard to find because the building does not at all look like a brewery, thankfully there is a carton bike outside that gave away the buildings camouflage. They are building a brand new facility that is almost ready to open, but for now they have a very cozy taproom that feels like someones attic. Their flights are served one at a time, you get poker chips for each fill, and they give you the first for free. They have their flagships that you can find everywhere, and a few others. I really enjoyed their SS Hief and the Dunning-Kruger. Both Ipa's but where a refreshing change from your juicy IPAs that most breweries are doing nowadays. read more

While this place is further than the other brewery, I find myself going out of my way in coming here. This place has become my favorite brewery. They truly come up with some excellent and innovative craft beers and you can tell, this is not a side business. The bartenders are extremely friendly and knowledgable about the latest beers. The crafts are excellent. The crowd is mixed - some young and some more mature in age. All are friendly and you can strike up a conversation with many. In other words you can hang back and relax. The first time I came, there had been a power outage, and I was turned away. That soured my experience. However, this time I really had a blast. Carton has one of the best reputations of any brewery in NJ, and you can see why. Flights were only $5, and they were very generous with refilling the taster glass. I think they make most of their money through distribution, so they can be hospitable in the tasting room. The brewers give actual tours in the bottom level. I really enjoyed that. Many other breweries just show you the tour card. They are building a newer facility across the street because demand is so high for their product. I really liked the 1880's era tasting room with the exposed brick and old beams. Hopefully they can still maintain their quaint feel even after moving next door. Their beers with German names have some grammatical errors. "Helles Lager" means "Lightly colored storage facility" in German. It should be "Helles Lagerbier" or just "Helles." The only thing that I didn't like is that Atlantic Highlands is so far off the Parkway. But it's still a nice town to visit, and there are many restaurants within walking distance right nearby. read more

This is the best brewery. As in: The Best. I've had around ten different Carton beers and every one has been top-notch. For me, paying more for beer of this quality is totally worth the pleasure. Carton also has a terrific tasting room -- warm, friendly atmosphere, which the staff adds to -- perfect for socializing. I especially like milk/coffee stout type beers and Carton is off the charts with theirs. A really unique selection. One, The Cosmonaut, is incredible, literally, as in "not to be believed." And I say this as a light drinker with no special knowledge about beers -- I just know what tastes good to me. If you're anywhere near Atlantic Highlands, ever, do not miss this place. read more

Been wanting to visit here for a very long time. Finally the stars aligned and I was able to go. Parking is on the street but wasn't too hard to find a spot. We headed upstairs to the tasting room and for $5 each we purchased a "flight" of tastings, which are chips that you exchange for a taste. We received a free taste of Boat since it was our first visit. The upstairs has a loft feel, sort of like you're in someone's apartment. Art hangs on the walls and there's a small bar off to the side. Part of the room was blocked off with boxes and old furniture. A mix of music was blasting and a hairy black dog wandered about. Even as packed as the tasting room was, the servers were quick and friendly. I really enjoyed the B.D.G country beer. We were a little rushed because we had somewhere else to be, so I am looking forward to coming back and spending a bit more time tasting the beers. Great place and great beers! read more

This is a very cool brewery. The tasting room is on the smaller side from some that I've been to. They start you off with a tour of the facility and show you where and how they brew their beers. That was pretty cool. They are kid and baby friendly however there are stairs. So we had to carry our little one around and lug the stroller up the stairs. It is not wheel chair accessible. There is no elevator :/ For $10 they give you a beer card and you select to taste 4 beers and after tasting one by one you get to select what kind of beer you want and drink a pint of it. All inclusive of the $10. I though that was neat. There are 2 bars upstairs so you have to walk back and forth figuring out where your next beer taste is coming from. And there's limited seats and limited tables to stand and rest your beer. The interior was a little homier than some other breweries I've been to. Not so warehouse-y. More like someone's living room. Overall we had a fun time and a good experience. They do not serve food, I didn't see anyone bring any of their own food in. Not sure if that's a thing. But we will be back. We had a chance to visit Carton Brewing Company in the Atlantic Highlands again; this is our 2nd time here and as I remember this place has killer stouts and it is a great value; for $5 you get to taste 5-4oz of their ever changing beer creations! After a brief but informative tour of their facility you go upstairs to the lodge where you can relax and enjoy their brews at your own pace. There is an array of bar tables, benches and couches with a small bar tending those thirsty for a try! My husband and I tasted the following beers, (listed in order of our preference): 1. Carton of Milk, 2. Unjuct, 3. 077XX, 4. Beach. We found their stouts to be solid and perfectly described! Very consistent!! What can I tell you? We love stouts!! And Carton and Unjuct made it to the top of the list!!! Although not IPA drinkers we found their double IPA, 077XX fantastic!!! The mix of flavors in this beer made it interesting and placated the hop taste well. Beach was refreshingly good with just the right amount of bitterness.. from grapefruit? Overall, this place is a must stop for all beer lovers out there! read more

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS: we visited the Raritan Bayshore section of Monmouth County today for some beer at Carton Brewing! Upon entering, we took a short tour and then headed upstairs for flights in the tasting room. The room has a cozy vibe and the 6 flights really filled us up. It got quite busy and we look forward to seeing their new building that's in construction on the adjacent lot. Dogs are allowed everywhere and must be leashed. I finally made it to Carton Brewing!!!! Carton Brewing is my absolute favorite brewery! Every time I try a new beer from them, I'm blown away by the creativity that goes into their brews. The Rickey, is my all time favorite, it's the best sour beer ever! ____________________ The Brewery Tour: When you walk into thr building you are required to go on a tour of the brewery before you can sample any of their wonderful beverages. My question is, why would someone not want to take a tour of their brewery? The first thing I noticed when entering the brewery is the beautiful aroma of wort (beer being brewed). I brew beer myself and it reminded me how awesome brewing is! Most breweries have a ventilation system to vent out the smell of the wort, but the brewery is located across the street from a school, so as an agreement to the school/town they cannot vent out... or have a sign on their building. I got the full tour and even got to see them brewing beer. Every Sunday, they brew a 20 gallon experimental brew! So, if you want the full experience and actually see them brew beer, come on a Sunday. Now it wouldn't be right for me to divulge what experimental beer that they're making, but it sounded like a porter for valentine's day; very, very exciting!!! When the tour was over I noticed the owner, Augie Carton, I had to go over to him and shake is hand and tell him how awesome his brewery is (as if he didn't know already lol). I also, congratulated him on his TED talk. If you haven't seen it, watch it, he really explains what craft beer is all about! ___________________ The Tasting room: After the tour, you head up to the tasting room. Five dollars gets you a flight deck of six different beers. They start you off with the boat beer and give you five poker chips to exchange for five different beer's of your choice, minus the cask beer. I got to try many different brews that i never had before, and loved every single one of them! Of course I had to leave with some kind of souvenir. I didn't own a smaller growler (32oz), so I purchased one of their stainless steel double insulated growler's and had them fill it with with their GORP porter and I got a four pack of their 077XX IPA. ___________________ This place is such a cool brewery! First off this review is about my experience at the brewery rather than the beers per se. Augie is consistent in that his beers are always of the highest quality and taste. Easily in the top one or two breweries in the state, and if you haven't looked lately there's probably about 50 or 60 breweries and growing. Egoipa is maybe one of the greatest DIPAs I've ever had. You need to try this if you can find it. My brother and I stopped in early on a Friday night. I was here probably two years ago and had a "chip" left over from my last visit. Carton uses a weird system whereby you buy chips and then use them to purchase the beers you want to try on tap rather than the normal way of paying for what you drink; like Kane. I paid for my first beer with my leftover chip. Later on a bartender approached me and asked if I wanted another beer. I said sure and ordered a sour porter. When I went to pay him with a $10 bill he looked at me like I just farted. "What?", I said. He said something I didn't understand and asked him to repeat himself. He says indignantly, "We don't give this beer away!". Now the whole bar is looking. Taken aback I looked at my brother like "What the hell just happened here?" I replied, a little pissed off, "You see this $10 bill? I'm paying with that." Mr Personality shook his head and asked if I was having any more beer. I said no then he waved the whole thing off and walked away not charging me for the beer. I really was at a loss for words after this. My brother and I discussed what happened and eventually figured that he couldn't take money for beer without me purchasing 5 of these stupid chips first. So I guess he figured if that was my last beer than there was no sense in asking me to buy chips. Now this bullshit could have been avoided if he wasn't so arrogant and explained this chip system to me (I assume regulars are very familiar with it) but rather than take the time to do so he merely walked away. As stated this was my experience. I would return knowing in the past the bartenders were very friendly (Jeremy for one) and the beer is A-one. Just be careful on a Friday evening. He's the one without the hat. read more

Came here for part of my friend's bachelor party and it was a great idea! The place is sort of difficult to notice because it's a small, plain, brick building, so take a look at the photo I took of the front. If it's your first time there, you have to take the tour before you get to drink. Don't worry, it's quick. After that you go upstairs where they have their tasting room and large Venetian rug. It was a Saturday and pretty packed but it was a good atmosphere. You can get 5 tokens for 5 bucks and exchange them for fairly large samples of Carton beer. That's a pretty darn good deal. Then there is always something on cask, which you would need to buy a full glass of if you wanted to try it, but it is totally worth it. My favorite that day was the Ship Wreck Porter. This is a review for the brewery but Carton beer is very good, one of the best New Jersey has to offer. If you were to do a brewery crawl in NJ, this place should definitely be on the list. read more

We went yesterday to check out the place - the convenience of the location is awesome - we live 3 miles away. For $5 you get a mini tour and 7 tastings of their beer. Tastings are TH/F 5-730p and S/S 12-5pm The tasting room is clean and comfy, a few couches with lots of light. It was actually pretty hopping so i didn't get to sit but we met some nice locals & the people who work at Carton are friendly and knowledgeable. I will definitely go back. We also brought our personal growler for a fill - i think it was $12 for a fill. I personally loved the Red Rye but we got a growler of the 077-XX. Boat was excellent too. We had the good and bad fortune to hit Carton on Regular Coffee release day, their busiest day of the year. Good because I got fresh 12% cream ale! Bad bcos the wait for a refill was brutal. No worries I put my newly won get-a-beer-in-Ireland skills to good use. :) The two bartenders were going thru orange electric tape like mad sealing freshly filled growlers. Six 4oz pours are just $5 but this "flight" is one glass at a time, quite a deal but leaves no way to compare tastes or save a little until your palate recovers lol. Regular Coffee .. whoa, never had such a strongly coffee-flavored beer and they're not kidding about the milk-and-two-sugars taste. Boat is a slightly cloudy pale ale, Sit Down Son is a yummy light lager, Milk is a rather fizzy stout, B.D.G. (brunch dinner grub) is their smooth & mellow amber, and 077xx is a wonderful citrusy IPA. Alas the cask (Don't Panic) isn't part of the flight. Anyhow, this is a 15 barrel microbrewery using down-the-shore well water, tucked into a great old neighborhood right across the street from a school. Upstairs drinking *cough* I mean tasting room is a bar in a living room with couches and carpet, very comfy. Bring a little food, they don't even have pretzels. Fourpacks $16. Ulp. read more

A fun shop - they came out for a corporate event with a truck and three types of their beer - Wit Whale, a double IPA (077xx) and Boat beer (a reasonable ale). Slight issues with the Wit beer for the start, but back in gear after a quick fix. Super-friendly and easy to work with, and we'll bring them back for more events. read more

The beer tastes great, the atmosphere is relaxed and pleasant, and the price is wonderful. If it's your first time here then you have to go on a short tour of the facility which is informational and informative. You learn about the brewing process and throughout one's whole time there one can ask an endless amount of questions of the employees/owners who answer with enthusiasm and lots of knowledge. You can get a flight of beer for $5 that allows you to taste 6 different beers. It's a great deal and a must if it's your first time here. If you want a full glass, it will cost $5 which is again a great price and the quality of each beer is good. I really liked the Milk Stout, even though I usually dislike this type of beer, but this was very drinkable and tasty. My other top beers were the the Boat Beer, BDG, and the Carton Canyon. However, I would be more than happy to have any of their beers. A couple other things to note are the area which is beautiful and the lack of food at the brewery. They cannot serve any food here, but I am unsure if one can bring in food with them. They also fill any growlers and have plenty of memorabilia. Love me some Carton. read more
