Stopped here after a playground and fishing excursion off the Bayshore trail. We were excited to try the burgers that were highly recommended. The atmosphere is very steam punk and casual. We ordered local beer (nj beer) , nachos, and burgers. Everything was delicious. My kids enjoyed their meals and we enjoyed the meals and the drinks. They also invite local artists to perform live and we caught some of that which was fun. We will definitely return. I am sad this place doesn't have a higher overall Yelp rating! Pre-Covid, I think this restaurant was very different and likely the reason. Since Gaslight's official reopening, it has become my favorite eatery on 1st Ave in Atlantic Highlands. The vibe is casual, they sometimes have live music, cocktails and beer selection are wonderful, and the food? Sooooo Good. They have a very small menu, which I think helps quality control. Everything is delicious - some favorites are any tacos/special tacos theyre offering, the jalapeno ceaser salad, grilled wings, and the Nachos (or even just the chips and salsa/guac). The bartenders who work there are so nice and kind - knowledgeable about the food and recommend great options! Our favorite food item, though? The SMASHBURGERS. They are seriously the best ones in the entire area by miless. They are SO flavorful and delicious. They have a few different sauces to choose from - our favorite is the truffle mayo. Is the food here a little "pricey" for bar food? Sure. Is it worth every penny? YES. The quality difference between every single thing on this menu comparatively to other bars is very obvious. 5 stars because of how shocked I was how good the food was & beer selection. If Anthony Bourdain were still with us and came here this be on top his list. We had the a spread started with the Tuna Taquitos which were amazing! A nice medium cut of fresh tuna with a light sear with hint of sweet chili on a crunchy taco. We also had the chicken tacos which had a nice amount of heat (medium) but just worked perfect with the beer on tap which was fresh clean & refreshing. We also had the chips & gauc which were super refreshing! Thy out like a hint of something in them that just makes them right. I also came on a Wednesday open mic night which the local talent was pretty amazing one of the perks of Jersey that's very underrated. Well it felt very well organized & such great vibes. Conclusion: if you're looking for a good beer & good good food in between tapas and entree this is the spot. Gaslight had closed their doors a number of years ago, pre-Covid, I believe. We were thrilled when we recently saw they had re-opened because we did enjoy dropping in for the beer selection, along with their menu in the past. We stopped there yesterday about 8pm. There were customers dining inside And out, but not a huge crowd lingering for a table. We went inside to where the hostess would be, to find just two other patrons awaiting a table. Finally the 'hostess' appears, holding a tablet. She stares at us and says nothing. I asked if we could get a table for two, she says 'no'. Not, would you like to wait, it will be this long, etc. And continues to just stand at the top of the steps. Can we go to the bar? 'No'. Can we wait for a table? 'We're full'. If we wait, how long? 'I think 45 minutes'. Really? Totally incompetent. Is this who you have controlling your restaurant and greeting customers? Some training is clearly in order!! Went here spur of the moment to get a snack. Nice place. Love the town. The salad was delicious. Chicken and waffles was eh. And the hummus dipping plate was ok. All and all it was ok. Q: what restaurant doesn't have high chairs? A: Gaslight. Not only does this restaurant not have high chairs they also don't seem to have uncooked onions. But they have sautéed onions. Weird to me. My husband and I stopped in for a beer and some lunch with our 6 month old. We asked for a high chair and were told they had none. My husband had to go back to the car in the cold to get the car seat. Next we ordered food, my husband ordered the gaslight burger but requested that the onions be fresh rather than sautéed. They could not accommodate that request and we were told that they didn't have onions that were not sautéed. We wondered how the sauteed onions got that way. We stayed, I ordered fish and chips. For $16 they were cafeteria quality at best. You have to wonder how fresh anything is when the restaurant can't come up with a freshly cut onion slice. My advice to the restaurant would be that the people who like to go to bars for lunch inevitably grow up and have families. Those people still like to sit down for some good beer and food. These people also have money. This place is really trying hard to tell thirty somethings that like good food and beer but have kids to go somewhere else. I suggest we listen. Edited to add: they serve tap water out of old tequila bottles. Specifically, they have mostly very local Monmouth County beers, as well as ones from larger semi-regional breweries. The atmosphere is hip and cozy. We also got the "sushi pizza" which was good, but I hate the tacky name. My fiance got the shrimp tacos and at $22, again just not worth the price. It came with Elote (Mexican street corn) but the cheese lacked flavor. Again, I don't think it was fresh. Overall, I think this place is overpriced for what they serve. You can call it Mezza Luna, Gas Light, 33 or whatever you want. Just don't call it anything short of fantastic! This establishment is run by the same people as Copper Canyon next door. Just like Copper Canyon everything is top notch. I was shocked that it was empty on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. The first thing I noticed was how comfortable the seats at the tables are. Very nicely padded and comfy enough for the entire game (any game). Our server was extremely enthusiastic, friendly, outgoing, helpful and knowledgeable about the food and beer selection. He was genuinely passionate about his beer and food knowledge. The kitchen was very fast and the meal was perfectly paced. The draft beer selection was very, very large, diversified and full of great beer from all over the country. I can't recall ever seeing a single milk stout on tap, let alone TWO! It changes regularly and any craft beer lover will have reason enough to visit often even without being hungry. The food was amazing. Just fantastic. We tried the roasted oyster and hummus appetizer. Some of the best oysters I have ever tasted. I could have eaten just hummus and oysters for the next week! The hummus had a wonderful presentation and flavor. The pita chips with it were so addicting they nearly ruined my lunch! My wife and I both tried the C.B.S. (Chuck, brisket, sirloin) Burger. We both loved it. Not only was the flavor outstanding, but it was exceptionally moist. It's very tough to keep a burger with smoked brisket juicy and this was dripping wet. My dad tried the Lamb Burger and proclaimed it was better than any Gyro he has tasted. All of us noticed that the shoestring fries were very fresh and had something unique about them. It almost tasted like a bit of malt vinegar and sweetness. Not a sugary sweetness, but just a bit of depth and complexity that I have never had with a fried potato! To this day, I'm not quite sure what the actual name of this place is. Some refer to it as Gaslight, while others refer to it as the Mezze Cantina. There are even two separate Yelp pages for the same place with different names! Since there is really nothing remotely 'cantina like' about this place, I decided to review under Gaslight. But names aside, I can tell you one thing. The food and beer is exceptional and should not be missed. I first came here about a year ago after visiting Carton Brewing down the street. Not only will you find local beers by Carton and Kane on their draft list, but you will also find some other solid offerings. It seems like the bartenders and servers here really know what they are talking about and are happy to answer any food or beverage questions. I also got the vibe that if you come here enough, they will remember you as I saw a lot of regulars chatting extensively with the staff. Now as for the food, the C.B.S. burger is up there as one of the better burgers I've had in a long time. It is topped with bacon, onions, and white cheddar and is sandwiched on a brioche bun, accompanied with fries. I always ask for my burger medium rare and this thing was practically still moo'ing. It was great but dare I say almost too rare? I still devoured it and had dreams about it later that night. Just be forewarned that you may want to ask for your burger slightly more cooked if bloody as hell isn't your thing. Finally, it's important to note that you can spend a significant amount of $ here. My burger was $13 which I suppose isn't terrible, given the quality, but ain't cheap by any means. Before taking our order, our server mentioned one of the specials which was a $27 burger, which almost made me laugh right in her face. So, it can be that kinda place. Just know that going in. This place should be better. It gets an A+ for beer selection, but it pretty much ends there. We've gone here probably 15 times in the last couple years, and have left disappointed almost every time. The food is just OK, the service can go either way (sometimes it's been great, sometimes not so much), and every single time I can't believe how much the check is. At first glance, it seems to have a great vibe, but it quickly falls apart and seems like nothing more than window dressing after a couple visits. Another comment on the food, it seems like they have great ideas and high hopes for the food, and it almost always falls WAY short. The food is usually bland and inconsistent in both presentation and done-ness (if that's a word.) They also don't provide salt unless you ask for it, which I always have to do. This place could be a hit with the right management and Gordon Ramsay yelling at them to properly season the food. Awesome beer selections: TVs playing football and a large bar when you first walk in. We ordered 2 appetizers: Poutine and Bourbon wings which were a great size to share. Poutine was good- shoe string fries, drizzled with brown gravy and cheese sauce- they were tasty, however I prefer Poutine with real melted cheese over the top and a puddle of gravy. We loved the Bourbon wings! They tased baked and no breading which is exactly how we like them- the bourbon sauce had great flavor! I'd really like to give this a 2.5 but..... First off if you are going just for the beer I'd give this 4 stars. I'd have given this 5 but it wasn't that busy and the bartender wasn't much into talking. I like to talk beer. They had 25 taps. All good stuff. No pseudo micros or semi crafts. These were all quality beer. A few local breweries, some NY breweries, CA, etc. I tasted probably 7 beers and they were all fresh and worthy of drinking. Where I had to part company was the food. The menu is small. Only a few things to choose from. I had the chicken pot pie and my wife had the mussels (appy). She complained that the mussels, albeit large, were flavorless. I thought the pot pie was OK. Nothing to brag about. The food prices were a bit hefty. I probably won't return because we live probably 20 miles from there but if in the area I certainly would pop in for the beer and probably eat elsewhere. read more

Now that we've moved to town, Gaslight gets a bit of a downgrade for me. We have been many times now and I feel like I am still wanting a bit more out of this restaurant. I got one drink because they had one server and he was overwhelmed, my wife got a lemonade, that lemonade was the same price as a Yuengling, $4, that is obscene. After that, we decided we need a break from here. I think what's happening here is they haven't read their audience. The commuters don't stick around town, they get to their cars and jet out of here, leaving the locals. But, as a local, I don't feel welcome. Yes, we have a child and I know you don't need to cater to kids, but listen, this isn't the Village, this is a small suburban town with a growing population of young families, get some high chairs. Know your audience. If you want to appeal to the suburban hipster community fine, but I don't think that will keep the lights on. The service the last few times has been ok at best, and the food about the same. They have some tasty options, but not worth the hassle (for us at least). There are many options in town and nearby that are more family friendly. If you don't have kids or on a date night, this is still a solid choice in town, but I don't think we'll be back for awhile. read more

We frequent Gaslight in the Atlantic Highlands to spend a casual time with friends while in the area. We like their relaxed atmosphere, the ever-changing list of rotating draft beers and great appetizers and burgers. We discovered the stouts from Carton Brewery here shortly after our first visits; the bar tender even gave us directions to the brewery which is not far from Gaslight; but I diverge, on to the review.. Gaslight sits on a corner on 1st Street not far from the sea in Atlantic Highlands; not to be confused with Highlands.. It offers plenty of street parking in public parking lot located in the back of the building. The place itself looks like an old-fashioned industrial warehouse from the outside but it has airy, spacious interior. There is a long bar to the left of the dining room which is always busy with a mixed of local patrons and visitors. There are huge blackboards on the walls where the latest beers and specials can be found. There is an extensive list of beers but they also have full liquor service including mixed cocktails and wines. The food menu is small but offers a selection to delight all! Among the appetizers we have enjoyed here repeatedly are Bourbon Wings, Mussels, Sushi Tuna Pizza, and Chicken and Waffles. Yes!!! Chicken and Waffles!!! I may say that all the plates have been executed well and we have repeatedly enjoyed them! As hardier selections, we have only tried the burgers, specifically the Lamb Burger. Yummy!!!
