We take our toddler to Martha for haircuts. She is so patient with squirmy little kids (my son is particularly squirmy), and she manages to give him a great haircut every time. As a parent, this was an awful experience. Upon recommendation from a friend, I took my daughter there for her 3rd birthday to get the princess makeover. Upon arriving at Cartoon Cuts we went up to the front desk, said we had never been there before, but were here for my daughter's birthday and wanted fk do the princess makeover. The girl at the front desk looked disheveled and unprofessional and proceeded to give me a blank look, as if she had no idea what I was asking for. I had to point out the sign behind her which advertised the service. She had us sign in and sit off to the side to wait. The lady that came out to help us, was an older lady (late 40's early 50's) and had a very thick accent and was hard to understand. She too seemed a bit at a loss as to what we wanted. I repeated we were there for a princess makeover for my daughter's birthday. She looked lost because my daughter has moderately curly hair (mixed caucasion/african american) and I had had it up in pony's already for the day because she had been at VBS. She started trying to just pull out her hair without taking into consideration how it was done. I had to ask her to stop, because she was going to pull out her hair and there was a way to undo it...she said 'you do then.' When getting into the chair, my daughter picked out her nail polish and the lady was very awkward and sloppy when she painted my daughter's finger & toe nails. At one point my daughter moved and the lady snapped at her and startled my daughter. I had assure my daughter she was OK. The lady then started on her hair. My daughter sits well for her hair, we do it at home, so she is used fo sitting for periods of time. So let me just say it was this was a train wreck. I don't even know how to explain it, but I posted a picture of the back of her head in the photos section above. I had tried to give the lady the benefit of the doubt during the process since I didn't know what she was trying to achieve. But she had NOidea what she was doing with ethnic hair. She tried using a fine tooth comb on her hair dry which will do a ton of damage/breakage on her little head. I had to ask her to stop and wet her hair....she said yay yay, I know, dismissive. Ultimately, her hair looked horrible and it was embarrassing walking out of there into the mall for other's to see. I didn't feel like I could complain at the time because I did want to upset my daughter and draw attention to if....she's 3, so she was happy to have had big girl experience. Also, she did not get the princess goodie bag that my friend's daughter recieved. I let my daughter keep the hairstlye for a couple of hours at home, but we had plans that required us to go out in public that evening, so I had to take out the mess, wash her hair from the spikey gell the lady used on her soft naturally curly hair and refix it before going out again. Also, my husband was appauled at how hideous her hair looked. He has stated that Cartoon Cuts will never be a place that we take our kids ever again, and thank goodness this wasn't a hair cut where the lady could have ruined her hair with a bad haircut. They obviously don't have stylists that know what to do with ethnic hair! I will NOT recommend this place to any of my friends, and quite honestly, will discourage people from going there. read more

Came in and waited for someone to check me in. Apparently that process is now gone due to Covid. Both hair stylists were with customers so I waited. When the first one was done, she rang up the customer and didn't acknowledge or let me know when I would be next. Instead she took someone who was waiting outside. Same thing happened with the second hair stylist. After waiting 30 min and no one letting me know when I was next, I left. Poor customer service. read more

My wife has sent me to get both kids haircut because she used to cry from furious frustration when my son would come home with that Dumb & Dumber look. Since I found Munaza at Fair Oaks' Cartoon Cuts, the kids haven't seen anyone else; it's been years. It's hard for me to share how much I prefer Munaza, because she'll be in more demand, but when you find someone who does their job really well... that's what Yelp is about. This place is awful- I asked them to trim my kids hair and they cut it off all the day before school (he had a hockey flow). It looks like a kid took scissors to their hair. The bangs are so short it's ridiculous. I asked them to fix it they said they went so short all they could do was shave it- he came in with long hair. This stinks. We've been coming here since our kiddo needed a first cut. They do a sweet certificate and include a lock of hair for the parents. We've returned several times and always have a pleasant experience. The staff seems kind and is well-prepared to deal with the kids. Cuts start at $19, with add-ons extra. This review is for the location at the Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax, VA. Beyond disappointed. Diana "cut" my son's hair and now he looks like the kid from The Munsters! I should've known when she started cutting his hair with such hurry, she even dropped her scissors a couple of times. I repeatedly told her dont go too short, this side is longer than the other, there's a bald spot here... now I regret it because in order to fix his hair I'm going to have to cut it super short, way shorter than it already is, and that is not a good look for him :( My poor son's hair looks horrendous!!! Cartoon Cuts is one of the very few places that participate in "Locks of Love". I wish more places participated since the donated hair goes towards a good cause. Although this place is obviously for children's haircuts, they will cut your hair (adults too) for FREE as long as you are donating at least 10 inches (and your hair is not bleached or terribly damaged) to "Locks of Love". It's a free cut so don't expect the world. You fill out a form and they will donate the hair for you too. They only participate in this program Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. It's really great! The first one was fine ( I think that it was rather novel) Now he screams and squiggles, but these gals have the patience of Job and well, just do a darned good job. We have been going to Cartoon Cuts since 2010! I love the stylist there, her name is Munaza and we love her! We've gone to a few others there when she's not there or the wait for her is over an hour long, but she's the best! We highly recommend her! Cartoon Cuts has gotten a bad rap at times, but I like them a lot and they are great with kids and that's the key thing! We were exited to see the place at first but we wont be back. Walking into it, we had to start the conversation with the people working there as they totally ignored us. The hair stylist answered his phone 2 or 3 times while cutting my childs hair. I had shown him a picture with what I wanted to be done and it's not even close. The haircut so far looks nice and even, no complaints there. But not what I was asking for. When checking out we were charged $25 plus $5.99 for blow drying the hair? I was under the impression the difference between the $25 one and the $20 one was blow drying the hair! So I just spend over $35 (tip) on a haircut that I could have gotten for $14 at a hair salon (including washing the hair) It felt more like a rip off then anything else. read more

We went on a Saturday afternoon. It was very busy but there was not a long wait, less than 10 minutes. Both my 1.5yr old and 4yr old needed their first haircut ever. So they sat with two different stylists and both were very fast! My 4 year old didn't need much hand holding at all so was easy. However For my 1.5yr old boy, he was a bit fidgety and the stylist did a great job. She did what I asked and was kind to my son. They are super quick, not chatty and kind of conveyer belt operation type. Just in and out, so if you are looking for a special experience this is not the place! All the chairs and stylists are super cramped together in their. It was also full of hair everywhere on the ground. Overall the place was fine and the stylists do a good job. read more

took my little one who is 3 year old for the haircut the other day. Staff was welcoming and friendly and the it had enough space for the kids to play around as well. My little one usually cries a lot when getting haircut this time he did cried but not a lot which was a good sign, the person cutting the haircut was nice and patient with the kids and handled the kids well, the haircut went well. But in the end when he really started crying he was given a small toy to play with and get distracted which was full of hair from the other kids, that put me off a little bit. Other than this the experience was good but they need to clean their toys before handing over to the kids. I would have given them 4 star if not for this. read more

This place is hit or miss. The first time I took my baby in we had this guy who was gentle and did a great job on my son's hair despite his crying and protests. We went again today for a 2nd cut and got this lady. She was really rough on him, at one point using her long fingernail to scrape a piece of hair that was stuck to his forehead. My baby was sitting in my lap the whole time so I could see she was digging into his forehead with her fingernail, I had to literally stop her with my hand. Then as she used the razor on him she would press hard into the skin, you could see red marks from it. I found myself asking her a few times to be more gentle. We have been seeing Munaza for about 6 years now. She is absolutely wonderful! She was great when we had wriggly little toddlers and is just as great with my kids who are now 4 and 8. My daughter has sensory issues so cutting her hair isn't easy. The past places we have been to ended up with her screaming and her hair half cut. We went to Cartoon Cuts one afternoon when it was less busy and got Munaza. She was fabulous with my daughter and used the TV, bubbles and Disney Princess boxes of clips to distract her and get her to turn her head where she needed. The pros are that kids love this place because while they are getting their haircut, they can watch a cartoon. Also, while they wait, they have video games. The stylists are also very nice, and they do a good job of cutting the kids' hair. The cons are that I made an appointment so I wouldn't have to wait, and I still waited 20 minutes. Also, the receptionist was one of those people you see on Tabatha Takes Over. She started yelling on the phone to someone about "You betta listen to me!" The kids were looking around all frightened. So this place is always ridiculously crowded and way over priced. $20 for a haircut on a boy?? My goodness, mind you the haircut was a little less than mediocre. You're basically paying for your child to watch TV while they get their hair cut. This place is cluttered and the receptionist is so unprofessional and rude, she makes it real clear that she hates her job. I finally gave this place a chance because my son has been begging to come, but I doubt I'll be returning ever. I first came here with my eldest son when he was 2. He cried in my lap the whole time but the stylist was unflappable. She remained calm, even when I was not, and just kept on trimming at every opportunity he presented until the job was done. On his second trip, six months later, he sat perfectly for her watching TV and eating his lollipop. I also brought my 18 month old son here for his first hair cut and received a 1st Cut certificate with a little bag of his hair attached. One star for two reasons. No one greeting customers entering the store and undercut the service. This was our first visit to this shop in Fair Oaks Mall. A few minutes before 8PM on a slow Monday evening. The shop looked nice but empty. No one was at front or in the service area. Two employees emerged from the back room only after we made some noises. The hair cut job was done okay but the hair dresser skipped the elephant wash and charged the price of $20.99, which should include the wash part per their website. read more
