My sweet tooth got the best of me today and I really needed an ice cream treat. I've passed by Carvel on Church Ave. countless times in the past. Today I made my way inside. This Carvel is small but filled with variety. Ice cream cones, cakes, shakes and cookies are offered in several flavors. A wave of nostalgia washed over me when I saw Cookie Puss and Fudgie The Whale ice cream cakes in the freezer. Those two guys and Carvel itself are a big part of my childhood memories. I kept it super basic, with a small order of chocolate soft serve. It was tasty and sweet and just enough to cure my craving. The two servers were very kind. With their paper hats, they reminded me of ice cream servers in ice cream parlor scenes, in 80s teen movies. I work in this area sometimes. Tried Carvel for the first time since it's a local spot and my friend wanted to check it out. Definitely not going back. One of the workers (white guy with long hair tied back, wearing a hat) had a nasty attitude from the start. I asked for his opinion since I've never been there, and he acted annoyed even after I told him it was my first time. I mentioned the flavors I like -- caramel, vanilla, strawberry cheesecake -- and he completely ignored it, picked something else, and asked me what toppings I wanted. At that point, I was already frustrated, so I just asked for a vanilla milkshake with a small scoop of strawberry cheesecake. He gave me a look, then mixed it, and when I asked about toppings, he told me to just read the board, which only had basic stuff like M&Ms, Oreos, and Reese's. I clearly didn't want any of that, and when I asked if there were other options, he acted like I was bothering him. The milkshake itself was plain and regular -- nothing special. I'm someone who really loves sweets and usually enjoys high-quality desserts from restaurants, so this was just a letdown all around. Since the ice cream is/should be the same in all locations the 3 is a review of the store. The store is a little shabby looking and there are no seats to stay and enjoy your ice cream. We had to sit in the little ledge there so that our ice cream wouldn't melt so quickly if we ate it outside (which would have been standing as there isn't a bench or anything outside either) Just a pick up and go store. The lady who made it put my peanuts on first, then the hot fudge. At first I was confused but it made sense. My favorite time of the year is December because it's my birthday month, which means I get to redeem a whole bunch of freebies. If you sign up for Carvel's emails, they give you a free soft serve cone coupon during the month of your birthday. Be aware that you can only open the email twice, so make sure to open it when you're near a printer. The Carvel I went to had 4 flavors of soft serve: vanilla, chocolate, coffee, and apple pie. The worker there was extremely accommodating when I asked for a swirl of both vanilla and apple pie. While the vanilla flavor wasn't bad, I personally thought McDonalds soft serve tasted better. Regarding the apple pie flavor, it was not for me. It tasted like an artificial fragrant cinnamon milk. My favorite part about the soft serve was the texture. There are some places that serve soft serve with a slightly gritty texture, but Carvel does not do that. It was completely smooth. I always have a hard time reviewing chain businesses. I find that typically most people will review the store itself on cleanliness or talk about the customer service. With the food, we all have an expectation. The food should taste the same in all the chains because the staff should be following the same criteria with the same exact foods. The same goes for this location of Carvel. When I walked in here I assumed I would be tasting the same Carvel soft serve that I had as a child. The shocker? Nothing. I did. I went in on a Wednesday and got the buy one get one deal. The serving size was a small, but felt larger than I expected for a deal like this. Toppings were plentiful and I was in and out in about 2 minutes. Now here comes the problem. The service here is crap. Like many other Yelpers expressed, that woman (you know the one) is definitely not looking to make any friends while she works. She asks for your order as she stands there looking at you with bitch face. She'll asks you about requests for size, toppings or flavor with the same anger that your mom asked you to clean your damn room for THE 50TH TIME TODAY! Why can't you just do it the first time? I like Carvel. I like it a lot. It's right on the corner of my block, and I can get ice cream any time I want (except late at night). Not that I want to necessarily be eating ice cream all the time, but I am glad it's there. They now have "2-for" deals almost every day of the week. I like it when they have the no-fat soft ice cream, but sometimes they are out of it. I like the milkshakes, but they are a bit too expensive. I like the sundaes but they are so strict about what toppings you can have, depending on the size. I like the little white plastic holders that the wafer cones come in, because they catch all the sprinkles. The hard ice cream doesn't always look so good. But if you want a soft ice cream cone and don't feel like waiting for Mr. Softee or the Kustard King, this is a good place to go. Upgraded to 4 stars. They're really nice. read more

And Carvel hits the spot when you don't think you can follow portion control by allowing yourself to buy a pint from the grocery store. They have junior sized cups which are perfect and the small size is truly huge if you're hungry and splurging. Not too exceptionally expensive either. For a junior cup or cone it's only $2.75. I feel any fro yo place in the city is at least 4 bucks for a small cup and skimpy toppings. There's hard packed ice cream. Personal favs are cookie dough, mint chip and strawberry! Also, soft-serve regular and low-fat. Go there on Wednesdays if you have a buddy around you get 2 for 1. Also, these guys at this particular Carvel pile on the ice cream. I love to see my neighbors wearing colorful sari's,and they're burkas standing side-by-side with an orthodox Jews and their dark clothing and wigs. FIrst off they make the ice cream on premise. It tastes night and day from the carvel cake you may buy at a grocery store. Genuinely fresh. Only issue is sometimes the low fact ice cream soft serve does not work. Also the staff though courteous not necessarily the warmest. Not a ton of flavors but the taste by far makes up for that. Who doesn;t love Carvel?! Their soft serve sundaes are yummy, and their ice cream cakes are probably one of my most favorite things on this planet. I can probably eat a whole one by myself( the little ones that serve like 6 people). Those little cookie crumbs at the bottom just make me happy. Their flying saucers(aka ice cream sandwiches) are also very good. But what I love about this location is that Wednesday is buy one get one free on EVERYTHING!....except for cakes. Unlike the one on Coney Island Ave which is only buy one get one free on sundaes on Wednesday. A great deal if you're with a friend and in the mood for ice cream and in you're in this neighborhood...on a Wednesday. A friend and I went to this carvel and I was shocked of what was the worst carvel experience ever. We order the nutella milkshake which clearly shows a chocolate looking milk shake with whip cream and chocolate syrup. What we got was two milk shakes that looked 100% vanilla. She put little to no nutella. Also, SHE TRIED TO CHARGE US 50 CENTS EACH FOR WHIP CREAM!!!. I was shocked.
