What is it with Carvel parking lots? They're all so tiny! I've been to the Lyndhurst location and that one was small but the Hackensack one is poorly laid out and tight. If you manage to get a spot and make it inside, they do have a good variety. I picked up a birthday cake, which said it served four, but it was still pretty big. I wish they had one half the size. I noticed a sign for a special on Wednesdays, where you can BOGO free on sundaes so I might come back and check that out. I'd still deal with this parking lot because this is the closest Carvel to me. read more

So this is what happens when you cheat on Dairy Queen huh... you get mediocre ice cream from Carvel :-( I ordered a Vanilla + Chocolate Twist soft serve ice cream in a small cone (~$4). I know what you're thinking. How can you mess up a soft serve with the most classic flavors? Well.... The texture gets a 10/10. The flavor?! I was basically eating overly sweet whipped cream paste. The vanilla and chocolate both tasted the same. Also... they don't label any of their ice cream flavors on the glass display. Their readily available ice cream cakes and sandwiches look good, though. Carvel hits the nostalgia point pretty well (ice cream does that to me). The location in Hackensack is convenient and shared with other local shops and restauranteurs. I've been going to Carvel ice cream shops since I was a little kid. Regional chain that has a really cool ( sorry for the pun) story. They have both hard pack & soft serve ice cream. Shakes, malts, ice cream cakes, and a huge selection of other "to go & use at home" type products. I've been going to this location for years and the staff is great, and everything is always fresh. Located in a strip mall and easily accessible. The quality of Carvel's ice cream far exceeds hat other well known chain that "sounds like Fairy Bean". Not even close, Especially on the soft serve. Waaaayyyy better. Recently had a seasonal Pumpkin cheesecake sundae Dasher with carmel sauce and crunchies that was off the hook. The Strawberry Shortcake Sundae Dasher with layers of vanilla ice cream, strawberries and pound cake topped with whipped cream and strawberry drizzle is kind of special too. So if you just have a craving for a cold treat, want to stock the freezer at home with some good stuff, or need an excellent ice cream cake for any occasion, this is the place. read more

Nostalgic spot, hard to miss by the giant ice cream cones outside up high (two~!). The inside is a bit of nostalgia as well. Always crowded, but has enough servers to make the line move quickly. The parking lot is a bit tricky, but if you don't mind a little walk, go to the lot which abuts Route 17 and park there. The prices here are better than the Lyndhurst Carvel where we used to go when we lived closer; now we live nearer to this locations and we're glad to have found it. We do enjoy the Wednesday is Sunday two for the price of one Sundae, but we've also come for the cones, and the frozen goods and cakes. Carvel, IMO, has the best ice cream. Highly recommend this location. Apparently, it has been a family business for many decades. read more

We walked in here on a Monday night at 9:30pm and the floors were soaked in water. We actually thought it flooded until we saw an employee trying to clean early so they could close the store. The customer ahead of us actually said something before we did and they ignored him. There was still 30 minutes before the store was supposed to close. Why are you mopping with people coming in with children? Are you looking for someone to get hurt? Along with the completely ridiculous floor situation, we decided to order and take it to go, until we found out that they were no longer serving soft serve ice cream. We were told there wasn't any more. No more soft serve ice cream at carvel? Anyhow- where is management with these children working in this place? Maybe start cleaning AFTER the store is closed so no one gets hurt. This is absurd. See pics below. I first ordered a Father's Day cake thru yelp or grubhub, not sure which one. when I went to the Carvel Store on Summit St. South Hackensack they could not find my order which I already paid for. Updated my review based on service/ambiance....So I went last week to get a lil bit of ice cream. Noticed some new staff and was instantly disappointed as I was looked at by two of them and ignored. The young lady was packing some ice cream (probably for a pick up order) the other gentleman was doing something else. Neither acknowledged me with hey, how are you, I'll be right with you. The young lady literally looked at me with disgust, not even a smile. Finally the owner/ manager (not sure) came from the back when he noticed I wasn't being taken care of, greeted and took my order. With a smile, a hello and a thank you. I don't know about you, but customer service means a lot, especially for a place like this. I love this place, but the new gal/guys need some training. Carvel is right around the corner from us and we love getting a little late night sweet treat. Prices are reasonable, specials are better! There are plenty of tables and chairs to sit whether it is inside or outside. The only downfall is there might be a new employee, so the way your ice cream is prepared can be inconsistent. read more

One of the best carvel locations I've had the pleasure to patronize. There was a big line on a Sunday night with lots of families and the staff was running around to try and get every order completed in a timely manner. The sundae dashers were put together correctly (you can't imagine how many caravels don't know how to create menu items correctly) and the chipsters and brown bonnets I purchased out of the freezer case to take home we're fresh and perfectly executed. I can't wait to go back with a larger cooler to bring back more pre made items. I highly recommend! Plus the vintage neon sign is a nice bonus too! read more

I came here on 4/30 for their free ice cream cone day. I haven't had Carvel in years, so when I saw they were having a free ice cream cone day, I went. As you can imagine, when a company runs a special like this, it draws a lot of people. The line was out the door, but it moved quickly. I was impressed by the staff and their efficient handling of the line. The staff started making different variations of the ice cream cone flavors, in anticipation of what people would order. I got a vanilla cone with sprinkles (sprinkles were $.40). The soft serve cone tasted great and brought me back to when I was a kid. The same great taste hasn't changed much. Does Carvel really bake anything? This is more of an ice cream factory than it is a bakery. What do you know about Cookie Puss? What do you know about Fudgie the Whale? What's your take on Flying Saucers? As a kid, your party wasn't legit unless you had a Carvel Ice Cream on the table. Two layers; vanilla and chocolate separated by these black crispy things that taste like an Oreo cookie. Carvel is similar to Baskin Robbins in some ways but surpasses it with their theme cakes. Seriously, Cookie Puss meant you were a really good kid or your parents were the shizz. But the Flying Saucer is what floats my boat. The Flying Saucer is your basic ice cream sandwich, but better than I've had anywhere else. You can have it with either Strawberry, Chocolate, or Vanilla but the sandwich slabs have a chocolate flavor. It's the Flying Saucer that brings me to Carvel every time. You can buy them individually or in packs of 6. As far as the ice cream cakes are concerned, they can be personalized with a message or graphic, just nothing lewd or distasteful please. If you like the Blizzards from Dairy Queen then reccomend you try the Karvalanche at Carvel. I've been buying sundaes at the Hackensack, NJ for 3 years. Approx 3 mos ago, i asked an employee if this particular Birthday Cake had CRUNCHIES (one of your biggest selling points and my main reason for differentiating your brand). She assured me it did. When i brought it to the family to sing Happy Birthday, my granddaughter and others were so disappointed - THERE WERE NO CRUNCHIES. I complained and an apology was offered with coupons. Fair enough. Today, a simply questioned why i was overcharged for 2 KIDS' Sundaes and i was told i didnt get Sundaes, i was given a cup of ice cream for "x" cost and toppings were extra. THE KIDS SUNDAES were on the same sign as the larger cups but the owner disputed that. My argument was if it is on the same sign as the adults, one would assume the FREE topping also was on the KIDS offer. After receiving the owner's call and disagreeing with me totally, i told him he can't accept criticism of misleading signs...AND THEN ACCUSED ME OF COMPLAINING EVERY COUPLE OF MONTHS!! (when today was my 2nd time in 3 yrs). He then texts me to NOT COME INTO HIS STORE ANYMORE AND IF I DID, HE WOULD CALL THE COPS AND CLAIM TRESPASSING!!!!! WHAT KIND OF ASSHOLE OWNER HAS SUCH A THIN SKIN AND WHO IS HE TO THREATEN ME when i was not being threatening or abusive? If i survive tomorrow's Quadruple Bypass, i will be spreading my complaints further. It's a shame in an establishment with such great employees, the owner is a complete asshole.
