When they first opened, everything was delicious! They never change the sides for vegetables and they also had more of them when they first started. They served hand patted hamburgers - now frozen. I gave this restaurant 2 stars because, while it could have been better, I understand we ordered close to closing time, which might explain the issues. The person who took our order was friendly and helpful, but the food we received was disappointing. I had ordered a 2-piece whiting meal with fried okra and mac n' cheese but was told they only had a 1-piece whiting with French fries available. I was fine with that and added two cornbread muffins to go with it. However, when I got home and opened my order, I was greeted with a bunch of small, unattractive pieces of fish that looked like chicken livers or gizzards--nothing like the whole piece of whiting I was expecting. The fish smelled old and fishy, and most of it had inedible black skin that I had to remove to even make it halfway decent. Only one piece tasted like fresh fish, which made me think this restaurant could have been much better under different circumstances. Nowhere on the menu did it mention anything about "fish nuggets" or "fish pieces"--it was misleading, and I would have preferred to be told they were out of whiting rather than receive what felt like scraps from the bottom of the bag. The mentality seemed to be, "It's late, so whatever--we'll just give her this." On the plus side, the French fries and cornbread muffins were good, so there's some potential here. They closed the interior years ago because it lacked a public bathroom and they take orders and serve from an odd setup at the entrance door. I drove from Lithia Springs GA to try this place as I was craving soul food. Let me tell you, they did not disappoint. I got 2 dinners and eating the collards and Mac. I needed no added seasonings at all. Everything perfectly season and chops fried to perfection; tender and moist with a light crispy batter. I definitely recommend just don't go when I'm going. I decided to randomly chose a soul food restaurant here on Yelp. I chose this one because of the pictures provided my patrons. The food looked yummy . I wanted collards and fish , but normally I don't eat restaurant collards because I expect them to be heavy with salt and cooked in pork . I ordered the blackened tilapia, Mac n cheese collards and corn bread. The fish was delicious, it was seasoned to perfection. The collards weren't cooked in any type of meat ( I loved this fact) and they weren't overly seasoned . The greens had a good flavor but I couldn't tell if they were canned or fresh cooked in liquid smoke. It tasted like a cross between the two bit it really wasn't bad. Unfortunately I could only taste a small corner ( one noodle) of the Mac n cheese because I'm lactose intolerant and I thought I had a supplement to prevent having a belly ache. The little I tasted seemed ok . Now lets talk about portion size . I don't eat a lot in one setting , but when I go out to get homestyle food , I want enough for leftovers and that was totally impossible. I received a very small portion . The cornbread was the size of the munchkin donuts from Dunkin. The bread was yummy, but give me a whole regular size muffin! I could have eaten 5 of those to make one muffin. In case your wondering , you order at the door . The door is blocked using a table for social distancing . Once the food is ready , she flagged me from my car and she sat the order in the table at the door. The place looked clean for where I could see and the recent grade was an A. I gave it 4 stars for the small portions. Would I go back? I would ; the fish and cornbread was my favorite . They were out of desserts. I wanted to try the peach cobbler. Would definitely get that again, didn't love the Mac and cheese tasted like Stauffers frozen not bad just didn't taste like homemade. I've ordered take out form here 3 times now and the food was great every time. I usually call ahead and it's ready within 15-20 minutes. My husband picks up the food so I can't comment on the parking and building but all in all this is a great spot for delicious southern food. read more

Placing our order was a bit of a challenge. We had multiple orders and they apparently have multiple seasons for pork chops (blackened, salt & pepper, lemon pepper, & another way but I forget what it is. Well the person who wanted this didn't know it and with the back and forth of trying to get the order together and my son being frustrated placing the order, the guy taking the order became rude and frustrated too. We were placing the order because I had family in town and they wanted some fried fish and good southern food. I wasn't coming this on a Monday so I tried to find a place I thought was on the way to my niece's house to bring lunch. Well it wasn't in the way so the order takers frustrated remarks to place the order once we got there wasn't going to work. If I'd had other options I probably would've gone elsewhere. Most places that fry fish are closed until Wednesday and finding southern food between Powder Springs and Dallas, GA is a joke, not to mention my niece who was visiting was leaving shortly after one. So, I didn't want to try and find another place in the limited time I had since they'd already selected what they wanted from here. Any other day I would have gone somewhere else based on the order takers rude and frustrated behavior. I also recognized it can be frustrating taking a multiple meal order so I gave him some grace. I didn't need to know he was there by himself and all that. All that being said, I was quoted that the order would be ready in 20 - 25 minutes. We got there a few minutes early and when I went in to pay, they have the restaurant entrance blocked with a table so there's someone taking your payment or order from there. I appreciate their due diligence during this pandemic. I can't remember if the girl was wearing a mask or not. It was good to see a diverse patronage supporting this business. The funny thing is there's a handwritten sign inside the restaurant I couldn't get a picture of that reads, "nothings free so don't ask." Ok. Seems like the guy who wrote that and the guy who took our order must be one in the same. ‍ It was longer than 25 minutes, more like 30, so now I'm pushing it to try to make it to my niece before she has to leave. The food wasn't shown to me it was bagged and handed to me. Luckily our order was right. And I'm glad I came here BECAUSE of the food, not the service. I didn't take pictures of the food given the circumstances. We talked outside at my niece's house so there wasn't a place to really eat until we were back in the car headed home and I wasn't thinking about pictures then. I didn't hear from my nieces whether they liked the food or not so this is based on what my son and I had. I ordered the 6 piece fried shrimp, which were cooked perfectly and were still crispy by the time I went from the restaurant to my niece's house deep in Dallas and after some time visiting with them. The cabbage and green beans were also good and seasoned perfectly. The roll was fresh and I wish I had some butter to put on it. My son ordered the fried pork chop sandwich which he liked but wished he hadn't added lettuce and tomato to it. He didn't really eat all his green beans though. I'd return to give them another shot to get the service right because the food was good. However, someone else may not be as forgiving so I'd recommend some customer service training. When I picked up my order, I think the guy who took it cane out as he was wearing an apron but didn't offer an apology, if this was him. I didn't have time to address it since the order took longer than quoted and I was trying to get some where but I hope this post is read and appropriate action is taken. The rating would've been a 4 star had it not been for the service. Oh a god thing is they have lunch specials, which I must've missed in haste searching for a restaurant; I would've ordered off of it. There's a sign out front with the various specials & their menu board is in front of the window, as well as paper menus to avoid crowding around the sign. They're in a seemingly deserted plaza, at least during COVID-19, next to Pizza Hut. If you go to the veterinary clinic, you passed it. It's right before that. I couldn't tell when Yelp asked if there hours were the sane but when I got to the door, it seems they're working regular hours. read more

What took me so long to try this place??? I was sold at hello!!!! Customer Service goes a long way in this line of business and again, I was sold on this place at hello. I was welcomed with opened arms and told about all side and menu items. Very friendly folk, genuinely friendly folks! Because I decided not to have a traditional thanksgiving .... I was out looking for soul-food and ran across this place and Im soooo happy I did! I ordered a 5 piece whole chicken wing meal.... The fried chicken was seasoned and cooked perfectly! I ordered collard greens and mac & cheese, the mac & cheese looked a little different (very yellow) but was delicious, collards taste as if they came from my mothers kitchen (mom can cook)! I should have eaten there because I niece wanted subway, but somehow couldn't keep her paws on her own food-lol This is definitely a spot I will be visiting again soon! Apparently pork chop sandwiches come with mayonnaise (yuck). It was seasoned well, a little undercooked but it was salvageable. Now for the sides plate. I did like the price. The cabbage was decent. The greens seemed canned and not edible. The Mac and cheese was slack and cheese but typically restaurant Mac. Will I go back, maybe if I'm in the area. read more

Keep in mind, 3 stars is A-OK. I actually put off writing this review for 3 years because I wanted to make sure I gave the restaurant several chances to 'blow me away' and I really didn't want to give them anything less than a 5 star review because the folks there are just so doggone sweet, pleasant and personable. I have NEVER gone there and seen anyone in less than an amazingly good mood! If I was rating these folks solely on customer service and friendliness, they would get 100 stars, but, for me, the food is just 'okay.' Or maybe I'm just ordering the wrong thing. My booski likes the wings, so I tend to go here if I've been ripping and running all day and I'm near that intersection of Macland and Powder Springs and I just KNOW I'm not going to cook. I've been here multiple times and even moreso now that Hot Skillet is no more :-( and the only thing I can say I really like, 100% consistently are the chicken tenders. I've tried the pork chops, fish and a host of other things over the years and I'm just not as blown away as the other reviewers. The one time I had the fish - it looked delicious - but it was bland. I love that they don't load everything with salt like a lot of soul food joints do. I hate salt and because I cook with very little of it, I'm super sensitive to it. So its not that. But there's lots of other seasonings beside salt. And a lack of salt doesn't have to mean no flavor at all. The kids will eat the food, but not enthusiastically - as in - I have to threaten them with a 'no technology night' - or I have to let them douse everything in honey mustard and / or ketchup. I think what keeps me from being able to give a 5 star review is the sides. The fries, which should be a no-brainer, if-all-else-fails options at a spot like this, tend to always be cold and tough, and I'm not crazy about any of the other sides. For instance, the cabbage is cooked to the right consistency, but its bland. The macaroni and cheese is wet (not creamy) and bland. They do offer a salad, but the salad is iceberg lettuce, tomatoes and pickles - yes pickles - so I always wind up ordering something off the $5 specials, but I have to cook a 'side' to go with it. If there was even one side I could consistently order - or a more traditional side salad option, I could easily bump this up to a 4 or 5 star rating. I've been cleaning up my phone, uploading and deleting photos - so here are some photos from over the years. I will keep going back though, because I'm determined I'm going to find that perfect menu item. read more

For example, on the walls are signs that read, "nothing is free, so don't even ask." Who does this? It was 7:30pm on a Wednesday night, and I was very hungry and craving soul food. I had a long day and didn't feel like cooking. I always complain about a lack of good restaurants in the Austell/Powder Springs area where I live. As I often do when I am out and about, I pulled up a search to see if I could find anywhere local to check out. I was pleasantly surprised to find Carzell's Kitchen! This spot is located on the corner of Macland Rd. and Macedonia in a little strip behind Dollar Tree. It is right next door to the Pizza Hut. If you didn't know it was there you would totally miss it. This place is a little hole in the wall in a very sketchy looking shopping center. Don't let this steer you away! The food inside is worth it! Inside, there are only three 4 top tables and a counter that you order from. The majority of their business is take out, but there were a couple of ladies eating at one of the tables when I got there. They have a regular menu that includes fried or grilled whiting or tilapia, fried shrimp, fried chicken livers or gizzards, fried chicken breast, country fried steak, chopped steak, fried or grilled pork chops, chicken wings, burgers, and a bunch of country vegetables. Then they also have specials that they will put up on signs or on a chalkboard for you to pay attention to. My advice is to feel free to ask for suggestions if you are not sure. They will direct you toward food heaven! This is a straight up family owned business and they take pride in their cooking. There was a line of people placing orders and waiting for orders. Also, the phone was ringing frequently with people calling in orders for pickup, so it was very busy! Expect to wait a little if you walk in to place an order. There was only one older lady taking people's orders and a couple of people in the back cooking. They were all very nice and helpful, but I probably waited a good 15 minutes to order and then it took about 20 minutes or so for my food to be ready. Most platters come with 2 sides and your choice of yeast roll or 2 mini cornbread muffins. They also have a $5.75 special that comes with 1 meat and 1 side. Prices are very reasonable with the most expensive thing on the menu being $12.50. Everything is served in styrofoam to-go containers since this is mostly a take out spot. Here is what I ordered for dinner for me and my husband: Country Fried Steak with Onion Gravy Smothered Fried Pork Chops with Onion Gravy and Rice Collard Greens Macaroni and Cheese Fried Cabbage Black-Eyed Peas Cornbread Rolls Yeast Roll Peach Cobbler Everything was wonderful! I ordered the country fried steak for my husband, although I took a bite of it too. It was pretty good. Honestly, the steak was just so-so. The gravy was wonderful! That onion gravy is the bomb! The Fried pork chops were phenomenal! I loved them so much! I am glad that I got them with the onion gravy. They were worth the $12.50 with the rice and the 2 sides. The only thing I would do differently is that I would ask for more gravy on the side because the gravy is that delicious! Honestly, I could have drank it! All of the sides were very tasty. I would order any of them again. My favorites were the collard greens and the fried cabbage. The seasoning on both were perfect and when I added some hot pepper vinegar to those greens....OH YEAH!! That's what I am talking about! The peach cobbler was scrumptious and exactly the way any southern granny from GA would make her peach cobbler. My only disappointment was in the little mini cornbread rolls. They were just tiny and I would have liked more cornbread for my black-eyed peas. All in all, we will 100% be ordering from Carzell's Kitchen in the future. I have got my to-go menu, and I am sure I will be calling in my next order soon!! read more

Vegetarian, so I had vegetable plates both visits. This is Grandmama's kind of home cooking. Black-eyed peas, collard greens, corn, slaw, corn muffins and sweet tea. Tiny place; counter service, 3 tables with seating for 12 very friendly people;). Most business is to-go. Probably best home cooking in Powder Springs. If you disapprove of styrofoam, plastic cutlery, or deep Southern cooking, this not for you. Looking forward to these folks growing and getting a bigger place. read more
