We weren't looking for a full meal -- just a glass of wine and a dessert to end the night. Since no one was at the front to greet guests, I politely approached a member of the waitstaff and explained that we'd already had dinner and asked whether we might come in for dessert and a drink. His response was a curt, dismissive "No, dinner only that's it " -- delivered rudely and abruptly before he turned and walked off. When I later mentioned to him that his manner had been unnecessarily rude, and told him I completely understood if they were a dinner-only establishment, he simply smirked and said, "Yeah, I know I was rude, so what?" To be clear, the issue was never the policy. A dinner-only restaurant is perfectly reasonable, and had we simply been told so politely, we would have happily returned the following evening for a proper meal. What left an impression was the attitude -- the arrogance and complete indifference to a paying guest. After the fact, I looked through other reviews and was disappointed, though not surprised, to see we weren't the only guests to describe the service here as rude and dismissive. It appears to be a recurring theme for some If you're looking for warm Venetian hospitality, you won't find it at Al Vecio Marangon. If, on the other hand, you're in the market for poor service, a bad attitude, and staff who take pride in being rude, this is the place.

It took half an hour for our server (slow in every sense of the word) to take our orders and of course he got several things wrong. Fine, just let it go, we're enjoying ourselves on vacation. If only we could. The interminable wait made the meal impossible to enjoy. Took an hour after ordering for the first courses to arrive, with one of our party not getting his starter for another 20 minutes. The agonizing wait, inattentive service (e.g, taking away forks and not replacing them until asked 15 minutes later) and casual incompetence overshadowed all else. Out meal became a fricken prison sentence. What saves this from being a one-star review is that the food on the whole is actually quite enjoyable when it manages to arrive. I ordered the Menu Veneziano which started with an overly sour sardine and pickled onions appetizer but progressed to a nice squid ink pasta followed 45 minutes later by my main course of sautéed calves liver and onions. Some pieces of liver were underdone and rubbery (raw inside) but most were properly prepared and overall I 'm glad I tried this dish. My dessert of tiramisu was a generous portion and a merciful end to a poorly paced meal. Our bottle of Prosecco Veneto was fine--fizzy and not oversweet. The bill (which took another half hour to arrive) was 210 euros for four diners (one of whom ordered only pasta). A fair amount less than what we'd expect to pay in Los Angeles but this joke of a restaurant wouldn't last three months in LA.

While exploring Venice we stopped because of the music. We noticed that a band was setting up, and it so happens that the restaurant was sponsoring a Jazz Music Festival. The group playing was the Balkan Trio with magnificent vocals, a guitar player, a drums. We got a table right in front of the band - a huge plus since the possibility of live music was the main reason we stopped in the first place. We ordered two bottles of wine, which were incredible. Then three of us ordered the three-course meat plate, and the other ordered the Lasagna, which was out of this world. One of the many things that really surprised me was the fact that while seated I read a plaque on the wall of the restaurant building that highlighted the fact that from 1743 to 1744 that building in particular had served as the French Embassy, and that Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the French Enlightenment philosopher himself had lived and worked as the secretary for the embassy during that time period. We could imagine him peering out the windows and looking into the Venician canals; walking through those doors, while writing the great ideas that would inspired the American Revolution not long after and would eventually lead to the French Revolution itself. This was an experience like no other. We were the last ones to leave. We said good night to a happy staff, at that point of the night, seated by a table ready to close their own days, and made our way down the narrow alleys and waterways of our Venetian summer!
