If you're lucky enough to have decided to stay in Dorsoduro during your stay in Venezia, then you need to top off the experience with a meal at Al Vecio Marangon. This is my second time here and it was even better than the first. I was able to secure an early dinner reservation by texting the restaurant a week in advance using WhatsApp. The space is intimate and charming, with some outdoor tables. I noticed more tourists dining here on this second visit, but I also saw that there was still a good number of locals. The menu is robust, and everything we ordered was fabulous. A disappointing end to an otherwise lovely evening in Venice My wife and I were walking back to our hotel after dinner and stopped outside Al Vecio Marangon, drawn in by the menu. We weren't looking for a full meal -- just a glass of wine and a dessert to end the night. Since no one was at the front to greet guests, I politely approached a member of the waitstaff and explained that we'd already had dinner and asked whether we might come in for dessert and a drink. His response was a curt, dismissive "No, dinner only that's it " -- delivered rudely and abruptly before he turned and walked off. When I later mentioned to him that his manner had been unnecessarily rude, and told him I completely understood if they were a dinner-only establishment, he simply smirked and said, "Yeah, I know I was rude, so what?" To be clear, the issue was never the policy. A dinner-only restaurant is perfectly reasonable, and had we simply been told so politely, we would have happily returned the following evening for a proper meal. What left an impression was the attitude -- the arrogance and complete indifference to a paying guest. After the fact, I looked through other reviews and was disappointed, though not surprised, to see we weren't the only guests to describe the service here as rude and dismissive. It appears to be a recurring theme for some If you're looking for warm Venetian hospitality, you won't find it at Al Vecio Marangon. If, on the other hand, you're in the market for poor service, a bad attitude, and staff who take pride in being rude, this is the place. read more

This is an extremely small restaurant, so I highly advise that you get advance reservations, or you will probably be out of luck! The restaurant is also very romantic, cozy, and just what you want from an small, intimate place. We loved the ambiance and are so glad that we had this experience. The service was friendly, helpful, and gracious. They even gave us each a glass of Limoncello after the meal for no charge. We started with an excellent mixed salad, which was large enough to easily split between the two of us. At 8 Euros, that's only 4 Euros per person. My wife had a glass of red wine, which she enjoyed. The awkward part of this review is that I did not like my entree of "Three types of cod (Tris Baccala)." The presentation was excellent (see photo), but this is one of the times I'd say it was my fault, rather than the dish itself or the preparation. I think if it was a different type of fish, I would have liked it much better. I had had a lot of pasta on our Italy trip and was looking forward to seafood. However, I just didn't order the right thing to satisfy that craving. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her eggplant ravioli (Ravioli Melanzane). It was expertly prepared and presented. For dessert, we split a chocolate soufflé, which as tasty as it was beautiful. One of the best lasagna I've had with freshly made pasta. The homemade bolognese sauce was amazing and made this lasagna memorable. The scallops were a bit on the chewier side and would not recommend them. The Pinot Grigio was smooth and hit the spot on a beautiful evening in Venice. We have always wanted to try this place, and finally made a reservation in advance, and we're able to give it a try. We started with the fish appetizer which was really unique and local- loved the shrimp and marinated octopus, my husband loved the cod spread, the anchovies and sardines. We had a glass of the Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc to start, and the a glass of Lugano (local Venetian white wine) and my husband had the Barbara was excellent. For entrees, my daughter had the pesto tagliatelle, my husband had the lasagne bolognese (amazing; super thin pasta and so flavorful) and I had their fish lasagne, made with their local cod, bocala, in a white sauce - very good, but very rich. But it was nice because it gave us a chance to meet some new people. The restaurant is pretty small but there is some additional outdoor seating. The place fills up quickly and people wait outside to be seated. We started our meal by sharing a caprese salad. The mozzarella was tender and creamy. Really good. I ordered the gnocchi Gorgonzola. It was really rich and good. My friend had the gnocchi Bolognese and enjoyed it also. They do speak limited English. The server seemed somewhat overwhelmed and wasn't friendly. But she was efficient. Needless to say, we ate there every night of our stay in Venice. We learned to love the staff... I'm quite sure they had to re-stock their wine cellar after I was finished with it. The food was absolutely out of this world. I'm a smaller dude and don't eat bigger portions... we'll say I looked like Whinny-the-Pooh after all visits and I don't regret a single bite! Prices fair. Lovely ambiance / restaurant. Amazing staff. Absolutely the definition of the Magic of Venice. We can't WAIT to go back again! P.S. You can find salad, pasta, meat, and fish. Bread: freshly baked baguette. Enough said Started with the vegetable platter: combination of cooked-hot veggies and room temperature cooked beans. Quite delicious when I added a bit of salt and olive oil. Bean soup: made with pinto beans( or at least that is what it looked and tasted like) I know pinto is not exactly Italian, so I am not sure if I am correct here. Soup comes out piping hot, flavor was amazing. The olive oil really came through which complimented the flavor of the bean. Gnocchi with meat sauce: meat sauce was one of the best I've tried. More meat than sauce which is nice because most places skimp on the meat. Gnocchi was prepared perfectly-I devoured the whole plate. I honestly don't know how anyone can have a bad word to say about this restaurant! This was our first meal when we arrived in Venice - tired and hungry after our trip by train and ferry. We stumbled upon Al Vecio Marangon, which was near to our hotel, and by the time we left, we were all smiles. Lasagne Bolognese was simply perfection. I Sodi's lasagne (in NYC), dreams of being this lasagna and does not come close. Even better, the ravioli with baccala. Delicate, flavorful baccala stuffed ravioli with a most intense, oceanic tomato sauce and olives on top. I will have to learn to make it because I can't live without this dish in my life. A stolen bite of my niece's spinach cannelloni was utterly delicious, too. Osso buco was good, but we have had better versions. We sat inside, as well as in the romantic courtyard. At least that can't all be bad. Each pasta was about €15, cheese plate of not very good quality cheeses was €11? Total tab was €78 and they charge a €3 sitting fee per person. One of our favorite meals in Venice! Al Vecio Marangon is tucked away from the main streets and tourist sights of Venice so it is easy to pass up this little hidden gem. The restaurant is near the Grand Canal in the Dorsodoro neighborhood. We stumbled by this restaurant in an attempt to escape the rain. I'm so glad we accidentally found this spot! Everything tastes like it is made from scratch and I wouldn't be surprised if the recipes have been passed down from generation to generation because the food was so authenticly delicious. My husband and I ordered a carafe of the house wine to share. (The house wine in Italy is delicious and costs less than a soda. There is no need to pay for the more expensive bottles when the house wine is delicious!) I ordered a plate of proscuitto and melon and my husband ordered an Italian bean soup that was so hearty and delicious. Everything was super fresh and our meal was served with wonderful crusty bread. Our bill was very inexpensive. I wish we found this spot sooner! I highly recommend dining at this spot if you are visiting Venice. read more

So the rating is an average of the food and the service. I ordered the Cannelloni with spinach stuffing which was delicious and thus gets 4 stars. On the other hand, the service was the most pathetic I've experienced in a long time, so 0 stars, which leads to my 2 star rating. Now let me elaborate on both. Very rushed and very impatient waitress. The gnocchi were very heavy but the green zucchini sauce was good. We asked for two more glasses of wine as we were drinking red and she brought us two glasses of white! We ordered water for the table and she brought us a bottle and put it on the table but no water glasses at all. So we asked for a couple of glasses so we could drink the water and she was very short tempered about the fact that we should've asked for the glasses initially otherwise it would've been water to walk away with!
