Nicola and Saor were our hosts and kept our tables well served through and through. Saor ran us through the options and we ended up ordering the following: Green beans with almond, grilled fennel with walnuts, lentils and stuffed mushrooms. You really cannot go wrong with any of these as how they were severed though my personal favorite were the lentils and the fennel. Absolutely recommend the place and their hosts and as well the ambiance that you get in a subtle kind of quite part of the town. Just do it!!

He explained that the food is Sicilian and quite different from what you typically find in Venice, which was exactly what we were hoping for after days of similar menus. The menu is short, focused, and built around family recipes. We ordered the pasta of the day, the roast beef, and the smoked salmon dish, and every single item was fantastic. To finish, we had limoncello made by Marco's mother, and it was absolutely delicious. What really made the evening special was Marco and his family. They were warm, kind, and genuinely happy to share their story with us. We loved hearing about his late father and the lasting impact he had on both the family and the restaurant. One of the most memorable parts of the night was joining in the restaurant tradition of coloring pictures and exchanging them with drawings already hanging on the ceiling. We ended up taking home a picture created by a family member, and it will be making the journey back with us to Carlsbad, California. Without a doubt, this was the best dining experience of our entire trip through Europe. Highly recommended!!

Al Garzoti doesn't have any of these things, with their name only appearing inside on the bar. Service is nothing to write home about; our waiter who looked like a young Nick Jonas, minus the charm, barely interacted with us, but the food he brought us was wonderful! If you've already had some pizza while in Italy, then go with a calzone instead. They are large and a great value, too. Note the ingredients first, though; Italians do not like substitutions. I tried a pezzo di pizze with ham and that too, was great!

It was good to know that even pasta out of a box can be prepared with the freshest ingredients. I ordered the pesto with garlic and pecorino, and it was honestly one my favorite pastas I've had in Italy. My pasta came with rigatoni, which was perfectly al dente.

For appetizers we ordered the cheese with honey for 13 Euros, absolutely amazing! We also combined this with the local olive oil and fresh bread brought to the table to start as well. For our second course we chose two pastas, the Penne Alla Amatriciana (I think it was around 12 Euros), and the Spaghetti Alla Carbonara (I think it was around 12 Euros as well). Both had extremely fresh homemade ingredients and were out of this world and extreme attention to care in the preparation. For our entree we split the breaded pork chop (I think it was around 20 Euros), including a side of potatoes (similar to the steak fries that you would see in the U.S.) The service was absolutely amazing and we loved dining alongside the owner and his family and meeting the cat that also lives at the restaurant and comes by to greet you during the meal as well. It truly was like you were dining at the home of the owner and is a must try if you are in Venice!

We tried the deep fried sandwiches and the mac and cheese balls; funny that these are both things that are plentiful back home in Milwaukee--never would have expected to see them in Venice of all places. Word to the wise: The outdoor tables are nice, but the birds--especially seagulls--are not afraid of people and will throw up gang signs as they try to take your food!

Took an hour after ordering for the first courses to arrive, with one of our party not getting his starter for another 20 minutes. The agonizing wait, inattentive service (e.g, taking away forks and not replacing them until asked 15 minutes later) and casual incompetence overshadowed all else. Out meal became a fricken prison sentence. What saves this from being a one-star review is that the food on the whole is actually quite enjoyable when it manages to arrive. I ordered the Menu Veneziano which started with an overly sour sardine and pickled onions appetizer but progressed to a nice squid ink pasta followed 45 minutes later by my main course of sautéed calves liver and onions. Some pieces of liver were underdone and rubbery (raw inside) but most were properly prepared and overall I 'm glad I tried this dish. My dessert of tiramisu was a generous portion and a merciful end to a poorly paced meal. Our bottle of Prosecco Veneto was fine--fizzy and not oversweet. The bill (which took another half hour to arrive) was 210 euros for four diners (one of whom ordered only pasta). A fair amount less than what we'd expect to pay in Los Angeles but this joke of a restaurant wouldn't last three months in LA.

His response was a curt, dismissive "No, dinner only that's it " -- delivered rudely and abruptly before he turned and walked off. When I later mentioned to him that his manner had been unnecessarily rude, and told him I completely understood if they were a dinner-only establishment, he simply smirked and said, "Yeah, I know I was rude, so what?" To be clear, the issue was never the policy. A dinner-only restaurant is perfectly reasonable, and had we simply been told so politely, we would have happily returned the following evening for a proper meal. What left an impression was the attitude -- the arrogance and complete indifference to a paying guest. After the fact, I looked through other reviews and was disappointed, though not surprised, to see we weren't the only guests to describe the service here as rude and dismissive. It appears to be a recurring theme for some If you're looking for warm Venetian hospitality, you won't find it at Al Vecio Marangon. If, on the other hand, you're in the market for poor service, a bad attitude, and staff who take pride in being rude, this is the place.
