Casa Carmen's locations in Flatiron and Tribeca had both been on my list, and after trying some of their amazing Carnitas Tacos (tender pork topped with chicharrón, cilantro, onion on a flavorful corn tortilla) at the Taste of Tribeca food festival, we decided to stop into their downtown space for a drink. The restaurant was stunning with its adobe style walls and tasteful decor; it looked like something out of an interior design magazine. It had a bar area in the front with sturdy, comfortable bar stools and a bright, sprawling dining room in the back. The very friendly hostess greeted us upon our arrival and ushered us to two seats at the bar. The bartender was also delightful and let us know that it was their weekend afternoon happy hour, which reduced their pricy cocktails to $14. I went with their Carajillo with espresso and Licor 43, a drink that I only discovered recently and now prefer to an espresso martini. It seemed like the cocktail was only on their happy hour menu, so I would need to go back during those hours to enjoy it again, as it was the best rendition I had ever had! It offered the perfect balance of rich boldness and vanilla sweetness. The Carajillo was served in a huge snifter glass with a thick layer of foam and some coffee beans along the top. It was heavenly! While we were there, I glanced at the brunch menu, which offered a vast list of tacos, Mexican egg dishes, ceviche, and more. Had the Huevos Benedictinos which was so so delicious! The poached eggs were set on top of a crumbled longaniza/potato hash which sat on top of a thicker homemade tortilla (somewhere between a waffle and a tortilla). It was fluffy and soft. Everything was covered with poblano sauce. I like my food with some spice, and asked for some hot sauce. They brought over homemade hot sauce (not in a bottle!) The restaurant is spacious with high ceilings and exposed wood beams. A skylight lets in lots of natural light at the back of the restaurant. The service was attentive and professional. Would go back in a heartbeat. They make a delicious cappuccino too! I'll be back to try the mole next time. read more

Casa Carmen is lovely in terms of the interiors and the atmosphere. I'm Mexican, so the "elevated" format doesn't fully appeal to me when it's your basics just presented in a photo worthy fashion. If I lived in New York and maybe didn't eat Mexican food as much as I do, I might consider this a four. The food was good, but nothing I haven't eaten before and the price point just doesn't quite align with the dishes their serving. We ordered: Quesadillas Trio - It was really good and the green sauce was amazing. Enmoladas Xico (my entree) - absolutely loved it. Full of flavor. Probably the best mole I ever had. Casa Carmen is a lovely Mexican restaurant that offers elevated food and drinks at a higher price point. The restaurant itself feels very spacious, with a nice mid-sized bar, and lots of tables for groups of all sizes (including a table for larger groups near the front entrance). Service was excellent, our server knew the menu inside out and was great about providing recommendations. Food came out quickly, and they brought fresh plates and silverware out at one point -- such a nice touch. In terms of food, I feel like they did a great job of keeping things simple, yet interesting. The ceviche verde, for example, was amazing. Fresh ingredients combined to make a really tasty dish. And the pescado a la talla was also phenomenal, it really stole the show in terms of presentation (the colors!) and taste. The fish was almost buttery, and the two seasonings were each delicious in their own way. I could have done without the pickled duck tostadas, and the beef tongue tacos were also a little bland. Neither really stood out in terms of seasoning or spice level. So I guess the move is to stick with seafood, at least based on this experience here. The staff especially the servers were incredibly nice and supportive and offered us some food recommendations since it was our first time. There is hole-in-the-wall authenticity, and then there is the kind of authenticity that makes you feel like you're transported to one of the finer dining experiences available in Polanco. Appropriately situated on a quiet street in TriBeCa, Casa Carmen delivers on the latter. We started with a souped-up concha covered with chocolate glazing, selected from a basket of pan dulce offerings. I've had mixed feelings about Mexican sweet breads over the years and admittedly often prefer a Chinese bakery ma-sai-ga-bau ("Mexican bun"), but this one was soft and appropriately sweet. The plantain empanada appetizer was also very good, and I felt the chilaquiles could have been a bit more boiled down, as these were a bit too crunchy for my taste. The best item of brunch was actually the spiced coffee, which is apparently brewed in something resembling the large vats that adorn the walls. read more

Upscale Mexican is hard. How do you dress up a cuisine whose winsome qualities are honesty, heartiness, and bold flavors? You can fuck with it and reinvent it if you dare (Oxomoco), but you risk pissing people off. You can go the playful whimsy route (Cactus Shop), but are you giving the cuisine the respect it deserves? Faced with this dilemma, Casa Carmen bowls down the middle, offering ultimately pretty normal Mexican food in an upscale setting. The ambience is neighborhood-appropriate: dimmed lights, high ceilings, exposed beams, skylights, and unobtrusively authentic art on the walls. The waiters are solicitous and discreet. For food, Casa Carmen insists on respectful takes on regional Mexican cuisine, which in this case means a menu heavy on mole. I didn't go that route, but my husband and I shared very good guacamole and the platano empanadas as apps. I'd never tried an empanada made of platano (with beans inside) and it was a fresh, interesting take. For my main, I went with chiles rellenos (a solid faithful rendition but unexceptional.) Looking back, I should have tried mole enchiladas con vegetales. The drinks weren't bad. The margaritas did the job, but I was more impressed with that night's cocktail special, which was made with sotol, a mezcal-like Chihuahuan spirit I'd never heard of. OK Carmen, you taught me something new! We ended the night with the corn cake and ice cream, another authentic and interesting number. In the end, Casa Carmen understood its assignment as my husband's birthday dinner spot; there were no misses, but no home-runs either. I am a huge mole aficionada, and have tried dozens of moles in NYC restaurants as well as a couple dozen in Mexico (Oaxaca, Puebla), so please believe me when I say this is the best I have ever found in New York City (by far!) and in the top three I've ever tried in my life. Just an incredible, perfect balance of bitter, sweet, smoky, spicy and salty. Nothing overpowering anything else, just a beautiful harmony. Tastes like someone's grandmother labored for 12 hours and cooked it in a clay pot over firewood. Other dishes I tried were pretty good as well but the mole and enmoladas (using the same mole) are total superstars. The ambience and service were great as well. El mejor mole de Nueva York! I was so thrilled to discover this restaurant because I'm extremely picky and I'm disappointed by most dishes in most restaurants. By the way it's not mole poblano. I came here with coworkers after the work day last night for an early dinner and it was absolutely delicious. We started off with some guava and pineapple margaritas, which were so tasty! They give you an option of salt or tajin for your rim which I thought was so fun! We started with the ceviche, the tuna tostadas, and the quesadillas. Everything was so amazing, but the tuna tostada was out of this world!! I would come back just for that alone. Another great evening at Casa Carmen. We were there with a client and now CC Flatiron is her 'go to' as it is ours. Pilar was a kind, informative and attentive server and Luis the manager really made us feel welcome. We highly recommend the chicken mole and table guacamole - and the desserts are not to be missed. The only downside was that the server accidentally broke my handbag holder and dropped my handbag that was hanging on the table, which had sentimental value. Always love trying a new neighborhood Mexican spot. As others have said the vibes and decor here is very reminiscent of a restaurant in CDMX. For drinks we went with 2 flavors of the mezcalitas - strong and well flavored and balanced. We liked the blood orange over the hibiscus. For apps we got the duck tostadas and ceviche. Both were good but personally the ceviche was my favorite (and maybe my favorite item of the night.) For mains we split the side of esquires, ribeye and the shrimp in black salsa. The shrimp was unlike anything I have had before and delicious. The ribeye was cooked perfectly. The waiter barely paid attention to us-- took forever for us to order a second drink. I had to work hard to get his attention. Speaking of the drinks, they were mediocre at best. We had a wonder meal here at Casa Carmen. We came in on a nigh that was absolutely pouring. The staff was so gracious in giving us a towels and taking care of our wet clothes. Casa Carmen popped up on my Instagram a couple of times and I had to try it. I had been looking for a good Mexican restaurant in the city to visit. I'm originally from Mexico City and this transports back automatically. The owner it the same family that own a popular chain of restaurants "El bajío" in Mexico City. Came here on a busy Saturday night which happened to be Mexican Independence Day. When I made the reservations over the phone I was never told that my reservation was for the high top community table in the front of the restaurant. I was annoyed over this because 1. I was never told i would be sitting at a cafeteria table 2. Had they told me this I would of never made the reservations. The hostess said they were completely full in the dining room. We ended up sitting at the lunch table (community table) we ordered the ceviche verde .. the fish was the catch of the day ...fluke. It was very good.. a bit raw but still good. For drinks... I will say wow their drinks are strong and come in a nice size glass the spicy margarita was out of this world. The hostess comes by and lets us know that there is a table available in the main dining room but she needs it by 8:30 because it's reserved... we agree... we switch tables. To our surprise there are a few empty tables including the one next to us which remained empty the entire time we were there. For our entree, we had the grilled octopus served with rice and beans, two orders of tacos - each order comes with 2 tacos.. we tried the barbacoa and the carnitas. We also had the corn. Got recommended to go here from a foodie friend. When we walked in ambiance was beautiful. Felt very authentic and somewhat romantic with low light. We started off with a couple of mezcalita because i heard the drinks were the best part. I'll be honest and say i'm not sure if it was an off day but the mezcalita was OK. and i LOVE mezcal. The drinks were priced at around $17-18 and for such a high priced cocktail i expect a little extra love in it. Either way weren't super hungry so we ordered a couple of tacos which were also very high priced for 2. We mixed and matched and I have to say i wasn't impressed at all. There was almost no flavor on the meat and the salsa was whatever. I truly was disappointed coming here, I had higher expectations for a Michelin star restaurant. The drinks were good and fresh, I drank mezcalitas and tried the blood orange and hibiscus flavor. The star of the show for me was the branzino with the salsa verde, which I paired with the Mexican rice it was superb. For dessert we did the tres leech, the cream can be sweeter, it tasted too milky. My only call out that made the dinner unpleasant towards the end of it was our waiter informing us there were people waiting for a table and if we can go grab dessert and drinks at the bar. BEST PLACE IN NYC TO GET DRINKS!! I came here for 1. my love for mexican food and 2. i've been seeing a lot of people talk about casa carmen. They have a super extensive list of mezcal and tequila options. For my first round, I got the ponce jaguar which was their version of a mezcal mule basc. My second round I for a fresa mezcalita (strawberry margarita but with mezcal). After the second drink, you'll def be feeling a little nice. For our entrees we got the carnitas tacos, the octopus tacos, & the pescado de verdolagas. Im a pescatarian but my friend said that the carnitas tacos were a little bland and lacked flavor even with the salsas that come on the side with It. My octopus tacos were great. The octopus is seared and a little charred and on a bed of refried black beans. There was so much flavor and the octopus was cooked perfectly. The fish entree we got was the real star. I cant remember what type of fish it was but everything about it was *chefs kiss* the fish was super flaky and will melt in your mouth with every bite.
