The chicken was cooked to perfection and whatever rub they use is incredible. I liked that our food came out super fast, served on a giant molcajete with a hot iron grill inside. I mention this because it wasn't oily. That extra step lets the juice and oil collect at the bottom, keeping everything super fresh. The interior is quite well done. It felt luxurious and comfortable. It's a great spot for the family, with friends, or grabbing something before a movie. I will 1000% go back. This place isn't trying to be some super authentic regional Mexican restaurant from a small mountain in Oaxaca. I was craving nachos and wanted to try something new. So I asked ChatGPT what was the best nachos in the city. They pointed me to El Vez. I ordered it for pickup using DoorDash and it was ready in about 15 minutes. El Vez is located all the way downtown near Battery Park. Looks like they took over the old Blue Smoke space (RIP), so the restaurant is pretty large. I was surprised when I went to pick it up and they handed me a square pizza box. This is actually something unique that makes it good. The biggest issue with nachos is that only the top chips have toppings and the bottom ones are naked. Not these nachos, they're laid it flat so every chip is covered. I ordered the Macho Nacho Chorizo and I would get it again. Is it the best I've ever had? Maybe not. But it's pretty good. read more

This is a nice restaurant nestled close to the world trade center memorial site. Its very spacious and has some cool decorations on the wall. They have large plate kids meals. We got the cheese quesidillas and the kids nachos. They devoured it. The side of rice and beans were not too spicy for the kids. And they loved the fruit as well. I got the adult nachos. They are served on a plate with ample toppings. We also got the chicken enchiladas. Those were bathed in a mole type of sauce. It definitely needed hot sauce. It took a while to get a server to come back with the hot sauce but it was worth it. They had an orange one that was milder and a red one that was much more spicy. It was filling and good. Tourists get fooled into coming here because the Google reviews are good and the pictures are pretty. I ordered the crab Benedict and a burrito. As soon as I ordered, I realized that the industrial HVAC system that was blowing full force was going to result in misery. Sure enough, the crab Benedict was served somewhere between "cool" and "cold," and even as I scarfed it down as quickly as I could, I did not savor a single bite. Then the burrito, my god, what a shame. Essentially no meat in the burrito, which explains why they aren't charging a flat $20 for it. Why even bother being this skimpy? The burrito here is like what "burrito" meant in middle America before Chipotle became popular. I'd expect so much more out of a place that calls itself a "burrito bar." Sadly, the hole in the wall place we intended to eat at was closed for the holiday, and there's no doubt that it would have been better than this. read more

I've probably been here 20+ times so I'm going to highlight my favorite dishes: 1) Tacos Al Carbon for 2 is a perfect blend of grilled meats, sauces, soft tacos and toppings. If you're overwhelmed by the menu choices you can't go wrong picking this item. I would definitely do the 3 combo for $63 and have Steak, Chicken and Shrimp. It comes with salsa, guac, sour cream, and grilled onions and peppers. I always loved the Chilis Sizzling Fajitas growing up and this is like the elevated version. 2) Nacho Mama - I gotta say El Vez Nachos are unreal. They are made fresh to order and nothing like movie theater nachos. The cheese is not an orange plastic cheese. Its savory and mild and not too heavy. The pickled onions and jalapeños add a perfect contrast to cut through the richness. Most recently we got The Nacho That Ate New York for 8 people and we added Birria short rib on top. This was easily one of the best things I ate this year. I couldn't stop myself shoveling in mouthfuls of queso crunchiness. We polished the entire platter. You HAVE to get these!! 3) I absolutely love fresh ceviche - the Aguachile Verde is an amazing sweet and sour plate of fresh seafood. It has shrimp, kampachi and crab. The salsa verde adds a crisp, vinegar tang while the melon provides the sweetness. One of the tastiest things on the menu for sure! I will say when you add on Margaritas, house made guacamole and other sides, the bill can really add up quickly. While it's not an everyday casual retaurant, El Vez ranks highly on my list and I come here often whether its for a formal celebration of just dinner with friends. My chicken quesadilla was average, it was a decent amount but I wish the tortilla was toasted, it was just soft and hard to chew apart. The chicken was also kind of dry. Although EL Vez is a short walk from the World Trade Center, ita worth it because of the views, shopping, and high energy in the surroundings. My only disappointment was not mine; I chose EL Vez because I thought they served burritos throughout the day, but that was not the case. It's always a bit disappointing when you get your mouth fixed for something only to find out when you arrive that it's not being .served or served only on a particular day or time. This place reminds me of another place (also with several locations) called Dos Caminos. Like that one, the food is more Tex-Mex and caters to the professional crowd in Manhattan. If you are looking for authentic Mexican food, this is not the place. They have salmon on the menu, burritos, Tex-Mex nachos with meat and cheese all baked together, and other more Americanized offerings. For that style of cuisine, this place is okay. The steak in particular was juicy and seasoned well. The drinks here are strong too. The margaritas in particular were noticeably stronger than most places I've been to.
