My friend got the steak tartar small plate and I got the veggie pastry large plate. Though everything was meant to share we were both hungry and just ate our meals. Had a stunning time at Soso's on Friday night. While the ambience gives bougie cocktail bar, the big booth tables are cozy, welcoming, and I was happy not to be squeezed into tiny tables as you often are at popular restaurants. We shared the house salad - citrus-y and very fresh and crunchy lettuce, the cheesy cauliflower which was maybe the most surprising and best piece of the meal, and the fries which came with an aioli to die for. Our mains were the chicken kiev (comes with a little chef's hat garnish!), and the steak au poivre. The steak was so nicely cooked and pratically melted in the sauce in your mouth, especially when combined with the fries on the side for the perfect amount of salt. The chicken kiev was lemony, fresh, and perfectly breaded. Cocktails were delicious, and service was so kind and warm, we were not rushed at all which felt like a treat for a Friday night. I liked the ambiance, it was dim lit with a lively crowd in the front, busy Friday night. As you get towards the back it's more quiet ans intimate. The music put the cherry on top. Service was timely and attentive, server was friendly. The duck was delicious! Juicy with a crispy skin. I enjoyed that meal. Waited mushroom was also a good pick. Came by on a whim on a Wednesday at 4:30pm and were seated immediately. Classy interior with booth and bar counter seatings. Got a dozen raw oysters and the chicken liver pate, both were delicious. For food we shared everything: Escargot (10/10) I don't typically like escargot but this was delicious and came with little baguette pieces Crab royale (9/10) really good and we used the baguettes from the escargot to dip into the custard Then it took a long time for our other food to come out so they gave us free white tea shots and added a complimentary house salad (8/10 good with a nice mustardy dressing) Chicken kiev (9/10 crispy and juicy and came with a little paper chef hat!) 4 quarter cheeseburger (8/10 the actually burger patty was okay but everything else combined was delicious!) Came here on a Friday night and had a lovely experience! The dining area is tucked in the back and it's beautifully decorated with big cozy booths. Great spot to catch up with friends as it's not loud but there's nice music playing in the background. The staff was also super attentive and friendly. Starters: Hamachi crudo which was absolutely delicious and paired so nicely with the strawberries on top. Asparagus is an absolute must get! It's a cold dish but everything was delicious and the butter beans were my favorite part. Steak tartare was also delicious and the crunch on top adds a nice change in texture. Entree: Vol au vent was so comforting and delicious. Mallard is another must get! The agrodolce pairs perfectly with the duck and it's the perfect portion size to share. Well funny how we came about to this spot. I was on google maps a d tried to find whatever cocktail bar we were close to and this one popped up and I also liked the name! So my friend and I said why not let's check it out! So glad we did. The outside awning is very pretty too and it looked like a cute place. We got in and found two bar seats which was perfect. I had a French 75 which was very tasty and my friend had a martini which she said was very good too. This bar was on the smaller side and had some table seating. It is mostly bar seating though. As you can see in my pictures the bar is to me beautiful. And they have all and every kind of liquor you can imagine, well so it seems! They have some bar snacks but we were only there for drinks. I'll start with the good. The service was great here. I also loved the decor and overall vibe of the place. The drinks were very mediocre and the food was so bland, I thought I had long COVID eating here. The chef needs to introduce acid and salt to their dishes. We had the hamachi Crudo that was so overwhelmed by the sweetness of strawberry that it was all you could taste. Then we had the escargot, which had no flavor. We had the crab...whatever that just tasted like sweet butter. And then for the main we split the steak in a peppercorn sauce that needed salt. The Guinness sundae was frostbitten and all the food was just mediocre enough that it wasn't even worth complaining about. We came during raining day and there weren't any seating and we weren't in the mood to stand, and was about to leave but the waitress tried very hard to accommodate us. She found us a table. We got a variety of cocktails- pisco sour, whiskey sour, French 75 and old fashion. Everything was made very well. They don't use egg whites instead a bean foam. It's a good alternative. I volunteered at the animal shelter directly across from South Soho Bar and never realized such a quaint cocktail bar was in my midst. The decor hearkens back to the glory days of 1920s speakeasies but with a more exotic flair, like maybe a speakeasy in Havana. It doesn't feel like they're trying as hard for the vibes as other "speakeasies". We got bespoke drinks, one with a "tropical and fruity" theme, and one with a "spicy" theme. Both drinks came out delicious and on-point. The Fries and Chicken Nuggets were also crisp and satisfying. Fabulous meal start to finish in this beautiful spot in Soho. Our server Benjamin helped guide us through the menu start to finish. He advised that i order the old fashioned with metzcal which had a wonder smokey flavor and a huge ice cube and wonderful way to start. Then we shared the crab custard dish which was extraordinary. Benjamin told us this chef is from Australia and we loved his asian slant on so many dishes. We followed up with mushrooms on skewers with a savory sauce and pared with a great french pinot and then moved on to the cabbage and Chicken Kiev which were both out of this world. We finished with the Guiness sunday which was spectacular and then Benjamin brought us some madelines with a great cream sauce. The whole experience felt like a Micheline dining moment at a fraction of the price! Can't wait to return and follow more of Benjamins suggestions like the Hanger steak. The reason I like it so much is because of how small and intimate it is. It never got crazy busy, so we were able to sit in the booth the whole time. This bar also has an extensive drink menu. Firstly, Kiefer was incredible. You're the man. We were greeted with a deco exterior, nostalgic but punchy. Sexy but not overly so(so). We were transported in a reverse speakeasy of sorts, as the bar was the entrance and the party in the back was the restaurant itself. We touched down to an art forward interior, surrealist art work mingled with playful color palettes. A moment for the leeks-- exceptional. Pistachios, some type of zest conversing with salty shavings. It was cold but welcome. Made with love. The rainbow trout, where do I begin? To be frank, it was a little undercooked but they quickly took the dish and immediately gave it life and a new filet. The graciousness of the server was unmatched that I did not feel bad for asking. The king crab was foamy and soft. The flavor trumped the texture. An explosion of butter offset by a mound of crispy potato's. The martinis were as dry as we hoped and you thought we were finished but NO-- Fresh, crisp Madeline's on the house. Served with a delicate cream in an oversized shell vessel. The food is 5 stars!! Everything was made well but not what you expect when you taste it. Service was ok, they were a little confused when it came to seating us but I'm hoping that was just a one time mistake. We got the tuna tartare and it was fresh and looked bright and colorful but it wasn't seasoned the way it is traditionally. It tasted citrusy but still savory, I'm going to guess they put grapefruit in it but whatever it was it worked! We also got the escargot and wow. Usually it's garlicky and buttery but this one also had a hint of earthy warm spice to it, but it worked! I found myself dipping the bread until no sauce was left. The chicken liver pate was made right, seasoned well, and my favorite accompaniment was the mustard sauce that came with it. I do wish the baguette was toasted however.. The mains also blew us away.. the chicken kieve... wow. Again, made well but not exactly what you expect. This might be a spoiler to some but it was chicken thigh filet attached to a leg on the bone, all breaded and fried to perfection. Soo good. We also got the ny strip and it was as tender and as seasoned as any 5 star steakhouse could make it. Even better than some. The pomme puree was also memorable.
