We had a good experience and were able to get a decent lunch for an affordable price ($53 for 4 people). Located near the ferry just off the Parque Benito Juarez. This local restaurant has a nice back garden area. This is not a noisy Senor Frogs. We ordered tacos carne asada/yucatecan pork and cochinita/mayan pork, quesadilla, hamburger with fries. On the wall is a menu for antojitos or snacks/appetizers that included empanadas as mentioned in other reviews - they did not have any available which was disappointing. It's been a couple years since we've been back to Cozumel. Casa Denis has always been out first night dinner stop from traveling all day. This restaurant has been here forever. This time around seemed different though the service is still good and very reasonably priced. There were 3 in our group, we ordered a few beers to kick back and relax an enjoy the Chili Relleno, Mayan Pork Tacos, Tortilla Soup and a Cheese Quesadilla. All the dishes tasted OK. for the most part. My Chili Relleno was a bit bland and not much meat in the Pork Taco. Maybe "shrinkflation" and to top it off the street dancers with the loud boom box still perform while you are trying to talk and relax. Time to break tradition and try some new places. read more

We came here on the recommendation of one of our scuba dive guides for an authentic Yucatan meal. Hubby and I shared the Cochinita Pibil and the Tacos de Res. Unexpectedly delicious. Any time I travel, I study restaurant reviews for that locale and make a Yelp list. Casa Denis didn't make the list. My bad. We came here midweek for dinner after most of the cruise ships had sailed for the day. It took them all of two minutes to find us an outside table where we could people watch and enjoy the mild weather. Service was attentive throughout. But the real reason to come here is the food, which turned out to be the best during our late-December/early January stay on the island. Among our meals -- fried fish, chef's salad and pork shank -- I had the swine and was totally taken aback by its tender succulence. It tasted like Sunday dinner at a Caribbean grandma's house. Rich. Tender. Every bite better than the last. Everyone else enjoyed their meal as well ... not that I was paying much attention, as I was swooning over my pork. We came for lunch TWICE during our vacation on the island, that's how good the food is! It is not fancy but some of the best food we had on the island. Mango margaritas- similar to Chuys! YUM! We ordered the garlic shrimp (best!) queso, and pork tacos and steak tacos. (Not all at once, two separate trips!) Our servers were nice and patient with us. We learned of this restaurant on Triple D so since we were in Cozumel we hunted it out. Very rustic is one way to put it compared to the US but that's ok-that's why we travel. The waiter, an elderly gentleman didn't know English but could understand it and the menu had English too. The seating was outside on a covered patio and inside one room had the cashier and the room to the side was were they cooked. There was a courtyard behind that was another very small eatery for very local people (like one skillet over a burner) and shared restrooms. I ordered chicken fajitas and they were good (not excellent but good) and a huge margarita which was better then average. Others ordered cheese empanadas and things i don't remember. Great location on city center! We love sitting outside and people watching. The service is really good and the food is amazing. We've ordered several dishes and all are cooked fresh and with great flavors. My favorite is the stuffed rellenos. While strolling the streets one night in Cozumel we stumbled upon this gem! Craving fresh seafood and a Paloma we checked out the menu and hearing they had fresh red snapper was all it took to get us a seat! Boyfriend and I shared the fresh seafood platter for one and some amazing salsa. Our server Paul was amazing. The food was prompt and so fresh. The best part was the almond tequila after dinner on the house. I loved it. I loved sitting al fresco with a view of the sea. The Paloma was perfection. I couldn't ask for a better dinner. If you love great tacos, empanadas, and panuchos this is a must-go-to spot. We were on a cruise and walked over to casa Denis (pretty easy to find since it is close to the square in downtown Cozumel). Make sure you go to the back of the restaurant or else you will never see this second restaurant with the real authentic (and cheap) food! Since we looked like tourists a guy came by to ask us what we wanted. You can also order from the front restaurant menu but you can also just look at the tacos/tortas menu hanging up near the front or the fried items from the lady in the back (another menu hanging on the wall - some other people have taken pictures of this already). Most of the tacos are about 1 USD and the empanadas are about fifty cents. We had two fish tacos, two carne empanadas, a panucho (chicken), and two cokes (about 1 USD each). This came out to six USD! The hot sauces are delicious. The red one is pretty spicy so be careful. Would definitely come again if we are in town. read more

When a restaurant is in business this long (est 1955), it speaks volumes to me. We had the Mexican Platter for two and several beers for about $30. (Hint: no credit cards). The platter food was hit and miss but we wanted a variety. The Mayan pork, chicken taquitos, beans and fried plantains were big massive good. The tamales and quesadillas were just ok, which didn't stop us. The chips and pico de gallo were outstanding; a PERFECT amount of heat to make you take another swig of beer. The most annoying thing was the sidewalk seating. Normally I love that but in this location, it's open season on the tourists. Street vendors were constantly stopping our table to sell us items and horrors, a karaoke street singer stopped to do 3 of the worst songs that you've ever heard. After each song, it was stunned silence from the crowd and he would say "thank you". I wasn't sure if he was thanking us for our silence or ability to tolerate the torture of his tone-deaf singing. After the songs, he proceeded into the restaurant table-by-table asking for tips. THAT never should have happened and it's the reason why Casa Denis gets only 4 stars from me. read more

I was excited by the Yelp reviews for this location only to be very disappointed. I think they may have paid reviews. Was good food and good price, BUT.... Terrible ending to an ok meal. Besides all the vendors interrupting your meal, I was most upset with our server. I went yo pay our tab and he gave it to us and said "Tip is not included!". No biggie, I paid with a 500 peso bill (about $25 USD) for a 380 mxn peso meal. So think a 20% tip about 75 peso. After handing the server the 500 he said "all good?" I said no I would like change. He came back with a 100 and a 20 peso bill. I told him I wanted to tip 20% he yeah the 100. I laughed and he did the math 30+30+30+ about 30. I informed him that was 30% i feel 20% is fair. He did not like that. So I said fine now only 60 peso tip. He said something morw I said keep it up and it goes down again. He then said I did not know what I was talking about. I said fine 40 peso. He then gave me change of a 100 peso in 2 50s. I said well nope here is a 20 peso and left. Do not go here they try and screw you. I honestly can't understand so many positive reviews for this place. We have spent hundreds of days on the island over the years so we've tried most restaurants there. We tried Casa Denis many years ago and were not impressed, so we never came back. This past trip we decided to give them another try. Of all the restaurants on the island this may well be our least favorite. The red sauce is simply tomato sauce out of a can. There is no flavor at all. We had three different plates as a family and none of them were good. The wait staff was, for lack of a better word, hostile. Then some drifter playing an Australian Didgeridoo sets up in the street and plays what he believes is a club rave mix of Australian outback music. If you can imagine a trustafarian whose family cut him off blowing into a didgeridoo while imitating a rap scratcher tripping on ecstasy...you've got this guy pegged. Like everyone else we had no choice but to endure this guy butchering Australian indigenous music by trying to play it rave style, we simply ignored it. Next thing we know he is standing at our table demanding money for his performance. Saying no just made him more determined. Basically, he isn't leaving until you pay him and he hit every table. He wasn't playing at peoples tables by request as is common (and wonderful) in Cozumel, he just stopped in the street set his pipe on a chair and started blasting...then shook each table down. The waiters etc didn't say a word to him. If the food was good, we still wouldn't be back...but it wasn't. Literally any other restaurant on the island has better food including the windward side bars which is saying something. Do yourself a favor and walk 100 yards to Wet Wendys. The food is better...at a margarita bar....just saying. Casa Mission is a taxi ride away and far better. La Mission, La Chosa even Palmeras is better nearby. Los Otates isn't far for really good tacos. Kinta is close as are many many other great places. Not this one. read more
