Casa Maya, located in Gillette and a quick drive through the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge from Morristown and Harding, is a cozy, casual, and brightly-colored -- complete with strings of multi-colored chili pepper string lights and mariachi music -- Mexican BYOB restaurant that serves up generous portions of tasty, fresh Mexican inspired dishes as well as traditional fajitas, burritos, tacos, and combination plates at a reasonable price with terrific service. It had been a while since we had been to Casa Maya, but the food and service was just as good as we remembered. My dining companion and I enjoyed digging into the basket of complimentary tortilla chips and cilantro-forward salsa served as soon as we sat down, but both thought the chips could have finished with a touch of salt. I'm a big fan of the Puerco Guisado ($16), a stew-like dish comprised of seasoned chunks of tender, braised pork served with onions, peppers, tomatoes, and olives, served alongside Mexican rice as well as warm flour tortillas. YUM! The portion size was enough to satisfy my hunger and leave me enough leftover for a lunch the next day. (No comment on whether I'd also filled up on the complimentary tortilla chips.) My dining companion was in the mood for something lighter and started with a cup of chilled gazpacho soup ($5) followed by the Ranchero Salad ($12), a large portion of tossed salad of iceberg lettuce topped with avocado, a hard-boiled egg, tomato, peppers, and onions, both of which she really enjoyed. The restaurant was moderately busy while we were there for dinner on a Saturday night, but our servers checked in on several times during our meal to keep our water glasses topped off and make sure we didn't need anything and were enjoying our meals. I'd give it 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5 stars. We'll definitely be back. PRO TIP #1: There are only two or three parking spots in the small paved lot next to the restaurant on Hickory Tavern Road, but there's a large gravel parking lot behind the restaurant on Meyersville Road (on the left side when facing the front of the restaurant) and a paved walkway to the restaurant. Make sure you don't park in any of the spots designated "Resident Parking Only" -- unless you live there. PRO TIP #2: The restaurant maximizes of the small space. The layout is cramped with only hardwood booth seating and tile-topped tables that accommodate either two or four diners. I don't recommend it for larger parties -- unless you prefer to dine separately -- or people with limited flexibility or mobility who may have trouble navigating in a confined space. read more

This place really hit the spot. After building up an appetite at the nearby Great Swamp and Raptor Trust, I headed here for lunch on Labor Day with two of my chums. I was a little nervous because we showed up right around 2PM and Casa Maya's website indicated they closed for a bit at 2:30PM, but they let us in and got us a legit meal in time. The parking situation is a bit awkward and took some navigating. The best comp I can give is the Flatiron Building in New York; the building is basically at the end of a narrow triangle (aka Meyersville and Hickory Tavern), so you have enough space for one or two cars to comfortably pull in on the side, but otherwise it's too close to the road and you end up jutting out into traffic. My chum had to park behind the restaurant and a few other buildings, but it could have been worse. Thankfully I spotted a sign nearby with additional parking instructions or we might have had to have gotten a little more creative in that regard. The one major negative here is that it feels VERY cluttered and claustrophobic in the restaurant. I didn't see enough of the interior to confirm if they just built in too many tables/booths, but each dining area has a very high partition that makes it feel even smaller. It may just depend on your perspective - some might consider it cozy - but if I have to position my body at certain angles to comfortably navigate the restaurant and my booth, that's a problem for me. I've stayed away from burritos for a while after experiencing some substandard ones in the Financial District, but I decided to make a comeback with the Tijuana Burrito, which featured marinated pork. I thought it was super tasty. I don't think this type of Mexican restaurant/food would ever be considered truly authentic ethnic cuisine - sort of the Sweet & Sour Chinese takeout equivalent, I suppose - but I'm a huge fan. For someone like me with a texture-based palate who doesn't typically like crunchy stuff in the middle of something soft, this was perfect - everything was saucy and ground down, if that makes sense. The pork was juicy and flavorful, and the sauces were great. It was a very decent portion that I probably only finished because of how many steps I'd accrued in the Swamp. The service was very good, especially when you consider that they needed to get us our food well before the 2:30PM closure. The food was made to order and yet came out within minutes, allowing us to comfortably consume our entrees. They DID push us out a little after 2:30PM, but I really didn't have an issue with that - we were done with the food and they could have just not allowed new customers in by the time we came in (and we knew about the closure ahead of time). An understandable kick in the rump. I'm rarely in this area but I'd absolutely come back, especially now that I understand the weird triangle parking lot situation. read more

Haven't been to Casa Maya in years and super glad we came across this spot again! Food: the enchiladas Del Mar were insane. The wine sauce is packed with flavor and the dish had tons of seafood. The wet burrito was MASSIVE. It was also delicious but the seafood takes the cake. The Camarones in salsa verde (not pictured) were my absolute favorite dish. Perfectly cooked shrimp in delicious sauce. Service: the service was great. We were seated quickly, the food came quickly, and we were checked on multiple times. Ambiance: I love the ambiance here! I'm surprised that many of the other reviewers weren't as enthusiastic about this place as I was. I've been meaning to come here for a long time; a friend of mine eats here regularly, and she's very enthusiastic about it, saying it serves "genuine Mexican cuisine." I can't be sure about that; the last time I had "genuine Mexican cuisine" I was 10 years old, and was actually in Mexico. Speaking about Mexico, let me babble on about an experience I had with a feral dog on the outskirts of Mexico City once...nah, on 2nd thought, I'll spare the reader, anyone who has read this far...and get on with the review. You're welcome. I was on my once-weekly get together with my old friend...we were both tired of Italian, Thai and diner cuisine...and eventually decided on Mexican (after having a desultory conversation that recalled that old Ernest Borgnine movie "Marty"--- "Where do you wanna eat tonight?" "I dunno. Where do you wanna eat?" "I dunno..."). I always like Mexican when I have it, but I'm in no way an authority, and the only times I eat it these days tends to be when I'm helping my birth mother with her laundry, and she's treating me afterwards to lunch (she often has a yen for Mexican food). I enjoy it when I have it, but once you get past tortilla chips, tacos, burritos and quesadillas, I really don't know what I'm ordering. Which is why I usually stick to tortilla chips, tacos, burritos and quesadillas. I've passed this place countless times over the years when heading through the Great Swamp on my way back to Basking Ridge (it's longer but much more scenic and relaxing than Rt. 287), but parking initially was a problem. Right smack dab on a traffic circle (I detest traffic circles, although given this is a semi-rural area, it didn't present too much of a problem), I finally figured out that the large gravel lot in the back of the restaurant was the parking area after nearly getting clipped by a passing car after trying to park on the side of the restaurant. Inside, a young woman took our drink orders (water for my friend, without lemon, of course; a cola for me). I asked if we could have separate checks. The young woman looked at me, paused, and said, "No," before walking away. My friend said, "You realize she had no idea what you were asking." Obviously, English is not her 1st language. I did realize that, but it was kinda cute and charming, in its own way, and maybe an indication that that "genuine Mexican cuisine" I had heard about wasn't just a sales pitch, but actually true. Our main server, a polite and efficient gentleman fluent in English, started us off with an appetizer of crisp tortilla chips and chunky salsa. I wanted to try something different for the main course, so I ordered a Mexican stew called Puerco Guisado. As I've mentioned in reviews that include my old friend, he can be...well, a handful for any server. He had a million questions, which the server answered patiently, and he still couldn't seem to make up his mind (I sometimes think of my friend...not unkindly...as Little Lord Fauntleroy in a middle-aged man's body). He finally did make a selection (although I can't remember now what he ordered), and we were served in a timely fashion. I loved what I had. Marinated chunks of pork in a mole sauce, served with rice and flour tortillas (I avoided consuming the slices of green chili peppers dotting the dish, but, on 2nd thought, I don't think you're supposed to actually eat the chili slices. They're for seasoning or decoration? As I've said, I don't know much about Mexican cuisine, obviously.). I loved what I had; my friend loved his dish too. For dessert, I ordered a dish of vanilla ice cream. My friend again vacillated, and I told him to order the Tres Leches cake, which I've had in Colombian and Mexican restaurants, and have grown to love (why didn't I order it this time? It's very rich, and given all that I had already consumed, vanilla ice cream seemed almost like "diet food" in comparison-- in some ways, I'm like that person who orders a 5-course meal, and then has a yogurt and a diet Coke for dessert and thinks they're actually still on a diet. Delusional thinking? Yes. I'm the glutton who thinks he's "dieting."). My friend ordered the cake, soaked in sweet milk and smothered in whipped cream, and he was as enthusiastic about it as I was the first time I tried it. Service was fine, and the prices are fair. I'm always somewhat hesitant about giving any place 5 stars based on 1 experience, but we both agreed, my old friend and myself, that this was a 5-star dining experience. Maybe we've been too "contaminated" by too much diner cuisine, but we both agreed on the excellence of what we had, and we don't always agree on too much. Take that for what it's worth, I guess. Decor is terrific, and if you score a booth for two it almost seems like you're dining privately. Eclectic and charming spot, attentive service-wine glasses came out straight away. Loads of parking in the adjacent lot. You will be brought a giant bowl of tortilla chips and a pot of decent salsa. Save those chips for the freshly made guacamole, as they're better than the puffier ones that accompany it. Shrimp in garlic sauce offers larger shrimp that you get elsewhere. My chile relleno was terrific, and the rice and beans came out piping hot-can't remember getting that anywhere. All it needed was a few drops of green sauce to bring it alive. read more

This was my first time eating at casa maya even though I live locally. I ordered carry out. I suggest that if it's the weekend give yourself time to order and order ahead. For example, we called at 6:30 pm and then told us to call back because they weren't taking any more orders at that time, but because we wanted to pick our order up at 7:30, they were able to take it. For an appetizer I ordered the chicken quesadilla and for entrees we ordered the chicken burrito and steak ranchero. The order came with chips and salsa. The chicken quesadilla was really tasty. It was made with shredded chicken and not cubed. Pretty standard and yummy. Our entrees were very nice size portions. We finished our dinners satisfied for sure and I had some left over for a few days. The burrito was yummy full of cheese, refried beans tomatoes olives, yum! My steak came with a side of rice and sour cream. We also had a side of guacamole. Everything was really excellent. I will be ordering again and look forward to dining in soon! read more

This place is so cute- thoroughly enjoyed lunch here today. It wasn't overcrowded on a Sunday afternoon at 2. We got a cozy booth and gazed at the eclectic objects all around. I had the carnitas and was very satisfied. The place is a bit unusual in that it's a single restaurant in a residential area. I thought it was known as Meyersville or Long Hill, but I'm not knowledgeable at all. I guess I have to believe this address, which says it's in Gillette. Anyway it's the restaurant one passes if biking through the Great Swamp. I went today after visiting the Raptor Trust in Millington. Come to think of it, it only had a few parking spots- where do people park after that? The tres leches cake was just ok in my opinion. I'm used to it being more moist/ having liquid soaked through. I commented on the listing where I last had tres leches cake, but it's gone now. Yelp editors that go through and delete things that don't look like tips to them. I was so disappointed by the lunch I had - the ranchero wet burrito had no green chili sauce, the jalapenos were tasteless, there was no heat at all in the lunch and it had kind of salad on top...it was not as big as usual and the filling was so so when it used to be fantastic. ....Very very disappointing. I tried to question the staff but no one understood me. The prices were much higher and the quality much lower. Our waiter said the chef was nao there so I will try it one more time during the week and decide. The moment you are seated your server brings you a bowl of warm, crisp Tortilla Chips accompanied by homemade salsa. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and offered helpful recommendations. My go-to Mexican Entrée is beef and/or Chicken Fajitas. The Fajitas at Casa Maya were a highlight of the meal. Served sizzling hot, the combination of tender, well-seasoned meat and perfectly grilled veggies was a mouthwatering delight. The portion size was generous, making it great for sharing. While this time I focused on the fajitas, I also sampled some of their other dishes. The enchiladas and tacos were equally delicious, showcasing authentic flavors and quality ingredients. Use to love this restaurant . Went last night May 24. The food was awful. The guacamole had avocado and something else add to it to double the quantity and didn't even taste like guacamole. The flavor of the rice was bland. The chicken fajitas use to be the best around these were uneatable. The wet burrito was also just ok and a lot smaller . They all got very expensive for the quality. Everything about our dinner was excellent. The service was attentive, the food came out fresh and hot, the ambience was authentic Mexico. I had the Enchiladas Mole. The mole was so great with the taste of cocoa, peanuts and cinnamon. The carnitas (pork) was tender and flavorful. It came with a nice size helping of delicious frijoles and Mexican rice. My wife had the carnitas served fajitas style with all the fixings including guacamole, sour cream, rice and beans and fresh hot tortillas. The prices were fair concerning the current state of inflation. However, it is BYOB, so that is a huge plus if you want to bring some tequila or a bottle of wine. They will provide you with a cork screw and wine glasses with no corking fee! We have been to this restaurant three times now and each time it has exceeded our expectations. We will continue to frequent this location. One word of advice, get there early because it is small and they do not take reservations. read more
