*I believe Casa Mexico and South Philly Barbacoa merged because we couldn't actually find South Philly Barbacoa. **They only serve birria tacos on Friday-Sunday. We wanted to go for birria, but since they didn't have it, we ordered cochinita pibil and fish tacos. I highly recommend the fish tacos. They're not like the usual beer battered fish, but they are battered and have a nice crunch. I loved that they were garnished with pomegranate which elevated the flavor. The esquites were also delicious. Service was not good. For some it's tough to get to South Philly Barbacoa in time for its famous barbacoa tacos and consommé, so we thought we'd give Casa Mexico a try, regardless of its mixed reviews. After I saw the docu-series on Netflix about this place, I was like, I have to try it. Sometimes you think these places get recognized and lose their food quality. Well, this place did not. It's been a while since the show aired about this place, and I had an opportunity to be around this area, as I'm from Utah. The meat was so delicious and very moist. Same for the pork belly. I got the opportunity to meet Cristina, and she was really kind. One thing I didn't like was the sweet tamal; it was kind of dried. We recently checked out Casa Mexico while we were in Philly, and we must say that we felt like family and at home! The service, music, food, and ambiance were all outstanding. We came looking for South Philly Barbacoa, but found Casa Mexico. We asked and learned that because of rising rent, SPB had merged with Casa Mexico, but they only do the barbacoa on the weekends. It was very unclear if anything else was the transferred from the original SPB besides the one dish on weekends. The restaurant has some seating indoors and a large stretch of sidewalk seating in a built out structure. The service was good. One woman seated us and another was our waitress. The waitress gave recommendations on her favorite tacos, including the special green chorizo with fries. It was odd that we wanted water but they would only serve aquas frescas, which none of us wanted but got because it was the only option and was $3 per glass. Very expensive when we just wanted water, and absolutely not in the mood for the flavors. The food was pretty good. Nothing phenomenal. The special tacos were definitely interesting and unique. Overall, bummed that we couldn't try South Philly Barbacoa and got stuck with ok food and forced into paying for drinks we didn't really want. read more

This is definitely the most authentic Mexican food I have had in Philly so far. The carnitas are out of this world- highly recommend those! They also had agua Fresca de Jamaica which is my fav You also get chips with your meal that are covered in refried beans and corona cheese- really good! There are many excellent Mexican restaurants in Philly, this is not one of them. I've been here twice in groups to my gastric misfortune. Every single food item I've had has been either inedible or tasteless. The carnitas tacos were 80% gristle, cartilage and fat. I gamely took a bite thinking it had to taste better than it looked (spoiler: it didn't) and I still get grossed out a year later thinking about that texture. On this last visit, I had the peanut chicken and it was painfully bland. Not a hint of spice or even salt. Aguas frescas had a weird floral aftertaste. The rest of my table felt similarly about their entrees. The free chips and salsa on the table were a nice touch. Those and the corn tortillas were the only part of the meal I enjoyed. The restaurant is kept up and has a bright decoration style. The bathrooms were clean. Service was fine and they did a good job accommodating our table of 6. Hopefully their new partnership with Philly Barbacoa for lunch will someday trickle down into the dinner menu. read more

I don't like corn tortillas because they're gritty tasting, but these tortillas are not gritty and taste fresh! We got an order of 4 tacos, 2 with shrimp (fried) and 2 with chorizo. I highly recommend the shrimp tacos since they are fried. They don't have a drink menu, but have a relatively basic bar. They can make mojitos and margaritas (strawberry, cucumber, or regular). We got a strawberry margarita and it was strong! Although I want to say it was on the pricey side. They also have happy hour! Great food, great service, and a converted warehouse atmosphere that's a lot cozier than the phrase "converted warehouse atmosphere" would imply. When we arrived we were given some ultra crispy house made chips topped with refried beans and cotija - the cheese was both fresh and funky, and the creaminess of the beans didn't affect the super crunch of the chips at all. I know that at the end of the day they're chips and beans, but little things done well can often go underrated. Got some guac, the pibil tacos, and the encacahuatadi (peanut based sauce) with chicken. Special standout was the peanut sauce chicken - complex, combining earthiness, light sweetness, super umami, fruitiness from chilis, and a whole bunch of other flavors. Like mole but not mole. It came with a stack of their homemade tortillas and lemme tell you if we couldn't soak up every last bit of sauce with them, we'd have been licking the plate. On a side note, I asked for the spiciest house made salsa or sauce they had, and they came back with this chili oil that was super savory, and the type of hot that didn't really register up front, but as we ate more of it, its heat ceiling was revealed to be quite high. Came here on the recommendation of a friend who lives in Philly. When I heard this place was run by a James Beard Award winning chef I was super excited to try it. After googling Cristina Martinez it really looks like she knows what she's doing when it comes to food. Casa México is nice and spacious inside so there should be no issues finding a seat. Very authentic Mexican food. We stopped in when in the city. Popped in for a quick lunch and we were pleasantly surprised. They provide some home made chips with refried beans and two salsas. It was a great way to start the me. The salsas were perfectly balanced. The chicken rolled up (fried) tacos (flautas in my neck of the woods) topped with cheese and Mexican sour cream were delicious. The service was quick as well, we got waters and tortilla chips with salsa verde and a surprise of refried beans under the chips soon after being seated. I got the enchiladas de mole and my partner (vegetarian) got the Chile Relleno. Both were very delicious and full of flavor. Portions were the perfect size and came with a side of rice and beans. There were a number of vegetarian options as well. The restaurant is size inclusive as the chairs were large, comfortable, and without arms. Run by the latest James Beard Award Winner, Christina Martinez and husband, Ben. This is a beautiful space! The food is very authentic. Probably the best authentic Mexican cuisine I've experience to date. They recently opened up, but you would not be able to tell. The bar is well stocked and the bar tender (used to work at Alma de Cuba). They have many traditional Mexican cocktails, in additional to a nice variety of tequilas and mezcals. You have to try the mojito! The one thing I love about this place is the service. Christina is always hands on. She will seat you, run food out and run the restaurant all at the same time, effortlessly. The staff are very welcoming and happy to greet you. The décor is very artsy and warm. In fact, the art on the wall can be purchased. They are looking to get more art in, and exhibit art work from various artists. There's a lot of great things happening at Casa Mexico, from featuring guest chefs to dinner lectures that benefit important causes all related to humanity. Christina has a foundation to help undocumented people, and the empowerment of those that face challenges in being effective in the community. I am looking forward to coming back frequently. Got the shrimp tacos, best breading and seasoning I've had for shrimp! omg! Compared to South Philly Barbocoa (sister store), the food is more authentic. Don't get me wrong, the food is amazing but we got their around 12:45pm and a handful of their items on the menu were not ready yet. I eat zabiha/halal which South Philly Barbocoa serves but Casa does not. There is meat in maybe 85% of the menu. The few items that were vegetarian or pescatarian were the dishes not ready-except for shrimp tacos. pThere is chorizo in the elote, which was a bummer and it's premixed. I keep missing the times to get tacos and consume at south Philly barbacoa so I'm glad these hours worked out for me. The specials of the day were amazing!! The ceviche was delicious the tacos were delicious and the special soup was too Unfortunately it was with pork so my partner couldn't have it. He tried the chicken soup and hominy off the menu but I fortunately was missing the richness of the broth that he could tell from the shine on my soup. So it wasn't his favorite soup. But his favorite was the bbq lamb. As it was mine too! Presentation was beautiful. I could spend a lot of money here. I need to go back to just eating tacos. Haha. I had a horrible experience here back on June 17, 2022 and I was too upset to write a review for a long time. I love trying out new restaurants in Philadelphia, especially supporting the Latino community. So I came in with a really open mind, and was hoping to have a good meal. I will say that the service here, was some of the worst I've had in the city. I ordered the Menudo, a dish I've had hundreds of times in my life in Los Angeles and Mexico. I've never received this soup without the hominy it, which was surprising, but I still wanted to try it. The tripe was extremely tough, and inedible to chew. The broth was nothing special, and it was not remotely spicy. As much as I wanted to like it, I was unable to eat it as it felt like plastic. So I asked the waitress if I could get some thing else. She said, OK, and I asked for the Carnitas tacos, which I assumed are fairly easy to make. What I received instead, was the tacos with a piece of tripe from my soup on the plate, and a bunch of pieces of fat in my tacos (which you can both see pictured). I think it was extremely unprofessional to take the tripe from my first dish and place it onto the tacos, were they trying to send me some sort of snarky message? My friend, and I could also see the staff inside leering out our table outside. All around it felt very hostile, and when I asked the waitress why there was a piece of tripe on my tacos, she insisted that it was not her fault, and that she didn't know what the kitchen was doing at all. To top it all off, when we received the bill, she charged me for a refill as a new drink. I assumed that when she asked to refill my drink, it was free, she didn't say she was going to charge me another drink. None of our meal was comped, there was no discount, and there was no apology of any kind. I will not come back here, and have warned several of my friends about this place. read more

I'll start with the positive. This isn't texmex. Food was good but you have to enjoy "authentic" Mexican. Corn tortillas, no flour, a dish of cilantro, dish of white onions, and two varieties of pepper (jalapeno was one) dishes. Only one diet soda (Blood orange soda) was different but okay. They weren't that busy and service was friendly but had to get their attention 3 times. Now for the bad. The margaritas. Don Julio is a mid level Tequila. There was no drink menu and my table of 7 ordered 7 drinks. These drinks were small. They were served in a short regular glass. They charged us $18 for each drink. The menu had the group price for 6 people as $100 for the barbacoa. The half order was listed at $50 and was $55. We were billed at $165 for the two. Our total bill for 7 was $385 BEFORE tip. We were totally caught off guard as I was anticipating about $250. Way over priced. Don't be fooled by the menu. I just came from Vegas and this tops their pricing on the strip. Server brought two iced waters, so I told him "Oh, I don't drink water at mealtime" he then began taking BOTH waters away (mind and my partner's) I then told him "I am the one who doesn't need water. Please leave his water on the table" The server then gave me a rude look and walked away. When he returned, I ordered hot coffee like I normally do. Coffee arrived room temperature and containing TONS of sugar. I was unable to drink it. Server never bothered to ask if everything was okay. My food was barely warm. Definitely not hot. Tortilla chips were stale and cold. Server never came back. So I told the bartender that my "hot" coffee arrived room temp and way too sweet to drink. She then told the server to get me a hot coffee without sugar. He brings it, with an attitude - and points at the sugar. I say "No thanks, I don't use sugar" he then gave me a rude look again. I then asked the server for the bill - he said he would get it. Waited a while, we even put our jackets on and he saw that, but he kept laughing at something on his mobile phone. So I walked up to him again to ask for the bill, and she seemed shocked that we were asking for it. I wasn't going to write this review, but then the server did the following, which is comprehensively unprofessional. He hovered over my partner's head WATCHING how much he left for a tip (which was 20%) and then watched him press five stars on all levels. The server breathed a sigh of relief. A new fan of Casa México. Stopped in for a bite after a virtual 15K. Didn't have a big appetite just needed a nibble and the tacos dorados did not disappoint. This is a very simple dish that I've eaten hundreds of times over the course of decades of travel and these were exactly as I remember. Order more food if you're hungry. Hands down the best tacos I have EVER had. The carnitas tacos were amazing. The ribs were cooked to perfection and the meat fell off the bone. They came with tortillas which were amazing but the meat was so good I didn't want to dilute the flavor. Chasing the perfect taco we ended up here after an errand outside of Philly. It was a block from the famous cheesesteaks of Pat's and Geno's. This was a no brainer first experience. I shall be back! Hopefully next time I will be in line in the wee morning hours at Christina Martinez's famous South Philly Barbacoa (the sister restaurant). By the way, you WILL pleasantly be greeted by Christina who is shuffling between her two master piece restaurants. The down the earth chef is actively involved in the businesses!
