After an easy 5hr bus ride from Albany (ride included 1 stop), I thought I'd be wiped- but honestly, when my daughter picked me up from South Station in Boston, it gave me a second wind. She'd mapped out a perfect little afternoon and evening, starting with an indoor market that was full of local art and vintage charm. By the time we wrapped up there, we were hungry. With so many restaurant options around, we chanced it and landed here. The moment you step inside, you're hit with that scent of garlic and seafood. My kid and I gave each the 'look' that said: this is it! Casa Portugal is inviting and decorated in soft blues+whites giving a coastal feel and the service equally matched the energy perfectly: attentive and kind. Our plump and juicy shrimp in tomato sauce starter was rich and full of garlic. It was the kind of appetizer where you find yourself wanting extra bread just to sip up that garlicky sauce. For our main plates, my kid picked the grilled octopus, and I went with the sea bream. The octopus was "like butta," and had that perfect char on the outside but silky inside. My sea bream was nice and I particularly liked that they got rid of the head and tail for me. Both our man plates by the way- had a nice amount of potatoes and steamed vegetables. And here's another part that really stood out- pricing. For the quality and freshness of the seafood, everything felt reasonable. All in all, come to Casa P. for a good meal. We had a delightful dinner here at Casa Portugal. On a chilly evening, this place felt very warm inside with beautiful decor and a peaceful ambiance. We started off with a pitcher of sangria, as did many other couples around us. The sangria was delicious, one of the better ones I've had. Fruitful and sweet, very refreshing. They bring bread to your table to start, it was very good especially with some butter and olive oil on top. I do wish it were toasted or warmed but it was still fresh. We also ordered the appetizer, Chouriço Assado no Fogareiro (Grilled Portuguese Sausage). This came to us straight off the flame and was nice and hearty. I ordered off of the specials menu, Bacalhau com natas (Cod with Portuguese cream). It was very yummy, fresh fish and a light cream. It came with salad but I asked for rice. Instead of substituting the waitress gave me both and charged an extra $5...oh well. Salad was good and rice too. My boyfriend got the Filetes de Peixe (Fried fish filet with salad, rice & potatoes). He enjoyed his too! Those potatoes were yummy. We chose fish and most of the tables around us did too. We skipped on dessert although all looked great. This place was quite charming inside and definitely is an awesome place to enjoy dinner. It was busy so we were lucky to snag a table as it's not big inside. The area around Inman Square is a Portuguese-speaking community, and this restaurant, opened in 1975, was where I tried Portuguese cuisine for the first time. Bacalhau á Braz: The legendary national dish of Portugal, and the portion was very generous. The seasoning was classic European: olive oil, salt, and black pepper. The egg was the absolute star, followed by cod and shredded potatoes. The onions were barely noticeable. Together they constructed a soft and tender texture. Tasting the cod separately, it seemed to have been lightly marinated; it was so tender and almost melted in my mouth, with no fishy taste. However, for me, this dish was a bit too salty and oily (so better with rice...), so the accompanying Italian sauce in the salad was exceptionally refreshing and delicious! (Although having an American sauce called "Italian" in a Portuguese restaurant sounds rather weird...) Pastel de Nata: Authentic Portuguese egg tarts. The waiter would kindly ask if you want cinnamon on top. Although I don't like cinnamon desserts in America, I still wanted to try the authentic Portuguese one, and it was a pleasant surprise! The cinnamon was predominantly sweet, while the herbal flavor was mild; the filling was delicate and creamy, slightly runny, and the egg, milk, and sugar were all very rich. Most importantly, the tarts were piping hot from the oven, making them not only more fragrant but also perfect for winter. Table Bread: The butter in small box felt a bit cheap, but the bread itself was truly excellent! The crust was rough yet textured, the inside soft and chewy, with a rich wheat aroma. P.S. I wonder if the elderly gentleman in the restaurant was just a waiter, or actually the owner? Although it was just a small restaurant with relatively few customers (I was the only one there when I ate), he was still impeccably dressed in a spotless white shirt. I love this sense of ritual in taking one's work and life seriously; the world should have been like this. I keep on coming back here because their food is reliably delicious and reasonably priced. I like the attentive but no-frills service. My water cup is always full and the servers are quick to serve my order or take extra dessert and wine orders, but for the most part leave me alone. We always start with their plate of fresh cheese and prosciutto ($14). It is the perfect combination of fresh, zesty, salty, and creamy to start off the meal. Everything I've tried across the many times I've come here has ranged from a 4/5 to a 5/5. I always try to order a dish with their potatoes and rice because they soak up any sauce so well. Solid Portuguese food in an intimate, down to earth setting with decent prices and fast service. Came tonight for dinner and was able to get a table right away. I got the asparagus soup to start: creamy and well balanced. Also the shrimp appetizer has a to-die-for garlic sauce. Then for dinner got the pork chop special which had a zingy garlic sauce and came with potatoes and rice. The pork was a little over cooked but the dish was quite good. Also, the service here is suuuuper fast! For dessert I got the poached pear and natas do ceu. The pear is served whole and cold in a red wine sauce. I'd never had natas do ceu before, it's basically layers of crushed cookies, whipped cream, and custard. It was really god but not my favorite dessert. I'd definitely come back. Seeing this restaurant on yelp I was like I must go! (I low key am trying to plant seeds in my husbands brain so that we can go back but this time together). This restaurant was a replica of the restaurant in Portugal. The staff were so friendly and attentive. My water glass never ever went below half way. The prices were so reasonable. $30 for a bottle of wine (and it was sooooooo good). Big portions at a good price. The olive oil, let's talk about the olive oil they served. I meant to ask them where they source it from because it was such a good dipping and cooking olive oil (and I brought home olive oil from Crete, Greece during olive oil season. This taste was different and just as good, used beautifully with the dish). The atmosphere was amazing! The painted plates and mural tiles on the wall, the tiles on the bar. This was my first go-to place after I arrived in Boston and I felt like my wonderful memories got wiped out by coming back. The food tastes different now, and the owner is still the same- very nonchalant. I know not to come back when I ask "what is the most popular dish?" and the answer is "we don't have one" with absolute no facial expression. After having so many seafood lunches and dinners, I suggested to my parents that we try something different, and this place came up in my searches for hidden gems. Ambiance isn't much here, but given the prices I can see why. Very affordable, and feels more like home style cooking as opposed to Instagram-style foodie cuisine. One of their specials that night when I went was the grilled octopus, so I went for that. The octopus was extremely tender, easy to cut and easy to chew. I was pleasantly surprised by it and really enjoyed it! For under $30 I cannot complain about it at all. My parents had the "Caldeirada á Portuguêsa", a seafood medley in a red sauce. It wasn't bad, but the red sauce was lacking and the seafood medley didn't have much flavour. I guess if the intent here was healthy homestyle cooking it does its job. I added a mango mousse for dessert. It was delicious! There's some other options that seemed appetizing too. Service was good here, the servers might seem slightly brash but they're knowledgeable and will recommend choices on what to order. Charming little place with lots of variety on the menu. I'm not super familiar with Portuguese food, but compared to previous times I've had it, this place stacks up fairly well. The seafood dish was not as flavorful as I'd hoped - didn't seem like it was seasoned with anything other than salt and big bits of garlic in the broth. I didn't care for the mussels - they were extremely chewy. The desserts were pretty good though - no complaints there. Prices are very reasonable, especially for the seafood dishes. Service was quick and efficient. The decor is colorful and inviting. The bathroom was clean. Only street parking available and It took about 10 minutes to find on a Sunday afternoon. My fiancé and I love eating out and have really enjoyed trying restaurants across the Boston area, and nowhere else have I found food this high of quality at this reasonable of a price point. This place blew them all out of the water. The sea bream is truly one of the best dishes I've ever tasted. I loved the layout and warm, welcoming atmosphere; the details are lovely, down to the gorgeous pottery lining the walls. I was also extremely impressed with how good the service was given how busy it was when we went and there were only two waiters on the floor! They have a wonderful wine selection and a great bar. Came here for lunch on a Thursday afternoon and was seated quite quickly. There were a surprisingly higher number of people also there (around half full occupancy wise) so that was promising. The ambiance was definitely a little more formal than I wanted for a lunch - it definitely didn't feel too casual and felt more like a spot for dinner, but the service was very quick and kind so it wasn't too distracting. I enjoyed the free bread and our orders were taken efficiently from a friendly staff member. The food came out pretty fast too so the experience wasn't bad at all! The portions were quite large - I don't think they gave us the lunch menu so it was definitely more than I was expecting. I found the price point though reasonable for what we got so I was full with leftovers by the end! I thought the seafood was cooked really well and the sauce complimented the flavors nicely too. The rice and potatoes that came with it all tasted great as well - definitely had a lot to take home after too. First timer in Casa Portugal, but not the last. My wife and I had dinner in Casa Portugal last weekend and it was a great experience in overall. Let's start with our server Cristina. She was great providing some options when we were asking her about the items on the menu and the drinks to pick. She was very cordial and polite and took our order to perfection. For drinks, my wife did not order anything fancy (just Diet Coke ), but per Cristina's recommendation I ordered the Sangria and it was delicious. With probably less ice I would have enjoyed it much better... Let's go to the food...For appetizer we ordered the Fava Beans with Chorizo and it was absolutely amazing!! The fava beans were well cooked and the mix with the chorizo along with the seasoning made of it a delicious start. Then we ordered our food based on Cristina's recommendation for first timers like us. My wife ordered marinated pork cubes that came in a house sauce with potatoes. The meat was tender, juicy, and very well seasoned. I ordered the baked cod fish in olive oil with red potatoes and, OMG, it was absolutely or@)&mic to the palate!! For dessert we ordered two to share. One was the Pastei de Nata, which was very delicious, and the other was Nata du Ceu that was also very delicious!!! The ambience was cosy and inviting to spend quality good time in there. I highly recommend to give it a try to taste the delicious food from Portugal (disclaimer, Brazilian friends have tried this place and they found it very authentic. Also, we are from Spanish roots which share a lot of commonalities with Portugal and have visited the country before, so, I have to say that the food was what you will find in Portugal). So, you're in New England, and you want to partake in foods they do well, or are noted for doing well. This would include fish (notably lobster), Italian food, and Portuguese food. When you search for Portuguese food on Yelp, be sure to read the categorization of the eatery carefully. The restaurant can be a Portuguese-Brazilian-Cape Verdean mix. While I like Brazilian food, I wanted Portuguese food and I did not have the means with which to get down to Fall River, MA to look for down-home Portuguese cooking. Lo and behold, Portuguese (only) food could be found in Cambridge and Somerville, both just north of the Charles River and accessible by "the T." I walked past another Portuguese eatery and settled on Casa Portugal. Casa Portugal is as close to a moderately priced and authentic Portuguese restaurant as you will find in the Boston area, with its ownership having roots in the Algarve. As others have said, it's not pretentious or fine dining, but it is better than casual fare. I had the pork cutlets. I would have liked chicken but wanted a larger portion than what was offered. Also, they don't have all the presentations of bacalhau, particularly those prepared in casserole form. The pork cutlet platter came with rice, potatoes, and vegetables. Also, you can dig into the bread and olives that they bring ahead of the entree. When I asked if they were included, I got the humorous and smirky response that "this isn't Portugal." In Portugal, their lavishing bread, olives, cheeses, and pates on the table at the beginning of the meal is not free, so keep that in mind. It's how they bump up the profit on the otherwise fair pricing of the main dishes. Fool me once. The food was very good and the portions were to my liking. I wasn't planning on dessert. However, when I saw that they featured mango mousse, I went for it. In Portugal, mango and passion fruit mousse come by every now and then, while, across the pond, every place has chocolate mousse on the menu. To wash things down, I had a Sprite. For my entree, the pricing was fair. The service was pleasant enough and expedient, just like in the "old country." The clientele was varied, with one table obviously having some well behaved and seemingly intelligent student types, possibly from nearby Harvard. And, at another table, there were Portuguese locals speaking the lingo. The interior is quaint and is also reminiscent of a Portuguese locale. I'm giving Casa Portugal 4 stars and, yes, I would return. I'm only giving it that rating because, of all the Portuguese restaurants I've been to in the U.S., the stand out for 5 stars would be Emidio's in Atlanta, of all places. You can drive here and parking this far out in Cambridge should be doable. However, it's also one short bus ride from Harvard Square's MBTA (Red Line) station and your Charlie card has that all wrapped into its coverage. read more

This is a beautiful cozy little restaurant in the middle of Cambridge and very close to Somerville as well. There are no words to describe how well this place made me feel as it transported me back to my native Venezuela and all the amazing Portuguese restaurants and the hospitality that exists there. The grilled octopus and squid were just completely out of this world. There are no other places in the Greater Boston area that serve it this way and I have tried to find it and happy to have found. The charred flavor that comes from the grilling of these amazing plates is so much better than the fried variety that is regularly served in New England. This is how you taste seafood and both plates melt in your mouth, which is really hard to do as both of them tend to be chewy, a masterpiece indeed. Same with the linguica or as we call it in Spain "txistorra", which had a nice spicy delight with the crunchiness of grilling this incredible sausage. Again, this is another plate that is extremely hard to find in the area and can only be found in trips to Europe, this place is authentic as it gets and deserve the amazing recognition of being a great Portuguese Restaurant. The best plate by far, which I did not have a chance to take a picture was Portugal's famous "Pastel de Nata". This desert was absolutely incredible, lime a creme brulee, but so much more flavorful and savory. It is really hard to describe, but please order it, you will not be disappointed. Very creamy, crunchy outside live a cannoli and a little bit eggy. Having said all of this, it is not a place for a basic meal. Everything that they do here is authentic Portuguese food and unlike other ethnic restaurants, they do not market it to the US market, they cook, like they do in Portugal, so if you are not used to strong flavors, seafood, salty cod fish and others, it will take you a few tries, before you get used to the flavors, but you will always come back, because the place is just very good! Last but not least, our server was absolutely amazing. Attentive, funny, caring, willing to make us feel at home, because to some degree, this was her home as well. Another wonderful dinner at Casa Portugal! This Portuguese restaurant isn't upscale or pretentious, it's a casual dining spot with absolutely authentic Portuguese food. As always, I had the Bacalhau à Brás, my partner had the Peito de Galinha with Vinho do Porto. The Bacalhau was excellent, the Galinha was superb - both were as good as the best we had while in Portugal. Our guests had Mariscada á Costa do Sol and another dish (I forget which) - they raved about them. We shared the Ameijoas á Bolhão Pato, which superb. The only tiny drawback is that they don't take reservations. Being a friday night, we arrived at 6pm and had no trouble. By 7, all the tables were filled. read more
