The ambience is beautiful, we wished we had some time to had the lunch at place, but as we were in a hurry we packed the lunch. We ordered fish tacos,avacado salad and chicken quesadillas. The fish tacos were very done. The flavours were great. My family loved quesadillas. It too had a fine flavour. If I lived closer to this town I would definitely be a regular and help promote the business. It was a little questionable from the outside because it seem deserted but once we sat down got our drinks! Boy, was I in for a 180 on my thoughts. Our drinks were PERFECT, chips and salsa came out and the chips are fried in house, salsa made in house so two and two in house dishes were 10/10!! My entire came out next and I was so happy with hot and fresh food! For them to be understaffed they knew how to service their customers. We were very excited to have maryland reopen dining. We finally got back to our goto place in frederick. We instead were very let down. They cut back on their portions which I am able to understand with covid, however they are no longer using the same type or quality of cheese, in fact on one plate I believe it was canned cheese. My husband, son, and I came here tonight for authentic Mexican food. Oh my God! This place is amazing! I think that I've found my new favorite Mexican restaurant. It was clean, and really nice! Our waitress seated us as soon as we arrived. It wasn't too busy because, it was after 7 PM. The food was excellent! We started with chips, salsa, and guacamole and everything was super fresh and delicious! The chips were thin and delicious! The guacamole was the perfect consistency, loaded with onions (my favorite) and the salsa had a touch of spice! Ugh! So good! My husband had the shrimp faijitas, I had the burrito gordo, and my son had the chicken tenders. I have to say, the chicken in my burrito had so much flavor. In the past, when I've gone to other Mexican restaurants, the chicken is usually dry, and it doesn't have much tast e or flavor. Not here! I could taste the "marinade" or flavoring on the chicken. Sooo good!!! Everything came out piping hot! Our waiter was an older gentleman, he was super cool and nice! I loved the music, the atmosphere, and everything. My beef chimichanga was without question deserving of one star but the bf said he liked his steak fajitas so I'm adding a star on his behalf. They did give him a generous portion of toppings (guac, sour cream, cheese) whereas other places don't. But back to me now. As you can see in my photos, the chimi was served dry as a desert. No melted cheese or sauce on top. The inside looked like straight up Alpo. No sauce, cheese, or seasoning to speak of and the texture was that of leftover meatloaf. It was edible in the way that when my little niece and nephew cook up something, I smile politely and chew it down. However I could not even handle the watery rice and old, canned refried beans- yuck!!! The chips were fine but the salsa is strangely sweet. It didn't really taste bad but I've never had sweet salsa before. Also, the restaurant proudly announces on the menu they've been open since 1987. I rate places on service, food, cleanness and Prices. I order carne asada, sweet plantains and I liked it ok. My husband order the beef enchiladas which were with ground beef not shredded and he liked it. He liked it more than me since I still liked Mariachis restaurant in Frederick's carne asada better. The prices were good. Downside for me was bathrooms were not as clean and I Always pay attention to that because dirty restaurants are a turn off for me however I did take notice that the decorations were not dusty which is good. No one was there to greet me or said anything when we left out of curtesy. Also, our waitress wasn't too friendly. For a couple of years, I think the restaurant was going through a dry spell. But after coming back about six months ago, and having been back a few times since then, I can honestly say the great food and excellent service has returned. I love the chimichangas, and this one was delicious. The shredded beef chimi is my favorite and the texture, taste and quality was delicious. The server we had was attentive, genuinely concerned and really helpful in making sure we had what we needed. A definite plus! I highly recommend Casa Rico. I used to come here all the time as a kid with my family. I hadn't been back to Frederick in years so I had no idea if the food would still be good here. Luckily it is! My friends and I all enjoyed the food immensely! The prices are reasonable (roughly $10 an entree) and despite us all being food snobs, enjoyed it. Some of the dishes are Americanized, but that doesn't make them bad! Service needed a bit of help though. Our waitress, while sweet, was either high or a complete ditz. Walking away while were were still talking, forgetting drinking, asking the same questions over and over... luckily we all just laughed it off. But if this is a normal occurrence... yikes! Drinks need SERIOUS help. They are SO watered down. Are you sure there is alcohol in there? I would skip the beverages here, you're paying way to much for what you get. read more

Man so many confusing flavors. The salsa was sweet. The enchiladas tasted like curry. The flautas were just bad and possibly from Costco's frozen section. I tried to give this place a chance but it's just not that great. Stick to Taco Bar (just across the street) or Cafe Bueno. read more

Went for family dinner last night we were having a good time our server was good and food is also good but one thing made me to write this review i am not a review person but this made me write the review. Restaurant close at 9:30 we were almost done with everything but my wife like to have one drink and we request our server but there was a lady server who was passing by and she said the bar is already close and it was 9:15 and she was serving the drinks to other table which we done feel so good about it.... Okay. So my father and I have been meeting at an older Casa Rica for years. When the Frederick location opened, it became "our spot" each time he came to visit from out of town. BEST FOOD IVE EVER EATEN. We normally even order each of our favs every time (they even accommodate vegetarian customers). Although, this isn't the best part. The owner plays every role in the restaurant with a smile, not to mention the couple of waiters who remember our faces EVERY TIME. Gives you a feeling as if we always welcome there. So me and my family decided on going out for dinner and decided on trying someplace new. We landed at CASA RICO. The place look dated and a bit dirty. The rug in the waiting room yuck but we decided to have dinner there anyway don't know why. The food was not great The service worst. And when the bill come it was ridiculous. Charging us 4 dollars for Hot peppers 2 dollars for sour cream which should've came with the quesadilla 3 dollars For salsa that's given to you when you sit down. The bill was like 83 dollars and some change for 2 adults and 1 kid. I don't mind paying for good food and Service but the restaurant is not nice The service is bad and you get charged for every single thing. Not going back ever. ps The manager is extremely rude. A solid local tex-mex haunt for decades. I've heard it spouted that it's Pakistani-mex. Honestly, I wish! Imagine curried goat with some pickled cabbage, spanish rice, black beans etc... The place has always had a strong bar, a fair hot plate and amiable service back when the only competition was Ye Olde Chi-Chi's. It was that bank near the Toys'R'Us. If you have fussy old relatives, this is the place to take them for a stiff drink and a heavy meal disguised as texmex "exotic" cuisine. I had the Santa Fe burrito, skipped the sour cream and cheese = best burrito I have ever had! Sauce is delicious. Nice service. Restaurant can get cold, at least when I was there one night it was really cold inside and I like fall and winter but... Also the plantains my mom got were totally re-heated as they were cold in the middle. So if you ask for these make sure whether they'll be made fresh if that matters to you. I'm so sorry but I thought with the great reviews this would be a great place. Firstly, the neighborhood is a bit... different, if you're not from there, it didn't make me want to stay around. Now for the restaurant, I came looking for chiles rellenos yesterday and they happened to have flautas, I thought GREAT I'll get both! When I went to pick up, they were soggy and barely edible. I had to force myself to eat them since I bought them and hate throwing away money. I really regretted this decision to come here. It is not Mexican, it´s a Tex'Mex, not a complaint, just FYI. No one that I talked to even spoke Spanish. I should just bailed then. Well, soggy, previously deep fried, with no flavor besides grease, you could tell the flautas were BIG but just gross the way they were served. The Chiles rellenos had no special flavor but at least were edible. Again, not impressed. Probably the worst TexMex I´ve had in a long time... Beans come straight from a can seemingly no seasoning and the rice like a Zatarans box. The chips don´t even start... I will never come back! read more

Best advice I can give you is stay home make yourself a pbj sandwich and call it day, if you really have a craving for Mexican food then go to Taco Bell and you'll get a more authentic experience than here. So I stop in for lunch around 2 and not many people in the restaurant, there were people seated at 3 tables. I was seated by the bar and saw people walking in to pick up their carry out order. One gentleman came in to pick up his order and he was given his change and as he was putting his change in his wallet not really paying attention the man handing him the bag, the waiter dropped the bag some chips fell out and he threw them back in the bag as he picked up the bag from the floor . As I sat waiting I heard a dog bark, then I heard it again and I saw the dog. The dog kept barking, when the waitress finally brought my lunch over I asked her if they allow dogs in the restaurant she said that they had told her it was a service dog but she did not believe it was and neither do I as Papillons make horrible service dogs. The service was bad the place was dirty, the staff looked all disheveled, the food was awful I don't know what they were trying to do but what I ate tasted nothing like Mexican food. They served black beans out of a can not even warmed up, it was poorly seasoned and their attempt at pico de gallo was a total fail. read more

This place is very awkward, for lack of a better term. The staff is awkward and seem as though they hate being in social environments (which would make waitressing a very ironic job to have). The only lively person was the host, she was great. Our waiter stood directly across from us and stared at our table the entire time we were eating??? What is that about?The set up is very low so you can see everything and everyone in just about the entire restaurant. Oddly enough, there are great reviews on the service so I was just perplexed. We just moved to the area a couple of months ago from AZ, and trying to find a good Mexican Restaurant is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack. My husband and I thought about this review longer and decided to give this a 5 star even though I considered a 3 star. 5 stars is for the outstanding Service they provided, trying to get my husbands wish chimichanga exactly they way he wanted it. They also exchanged the Klaas Horchata for other drinks. If you all have been reading my reviews, you know that I love a really good original Horchata and not that sweet powdered stuff, some call Horchata! Super sad! I had my Fajitas this time with chicken. It was good, but personally, it could have used some more spice. Hubbies Chimichanga turned out good too. My daughters shrimp Quesadilla was good. The Mini-Me liked her burger. The facility is clean and reminded us a lot of our "La Casita" in AZ. Personally, we will go to the Taqueria in Hagerstown. They have real huge and good original Horchata:-) The Cafe Rio has real Horchata and the food is good too. I just don't like the fast food flair. Lol. We loved the food! Me and my husband totally love Mexican food and love exploring restaurants which offer authentic cuisine. Casa Rico has been on our list for a while and finally we got a chance to go there. This was our experience- Food - ordered Chipotle chicken tamale (flavor of the month), chicken enchiladas and Chipotle chicken burritos. Portions were huge. Everything tasted awesome. My husband specifically liked the beans (which is quite a miracle given as Indians we prepare them in a very specific format for Indian dish called Rajma and love them to the core. Beans in any other format apart from Rajma is usually not appreciated.) He actually ordered extra serving for take out. I just wish they gave guac with these dishes, but it was not a turn-off as such. Ordered it separately. Ambience - Usual Mexican vibes which added to the experience. Staff- very courteous. We kept asking for one or the other things which extended beyond their closing hours and Maria was very polite to serve us with a big smile We gonna be regulars here! The server finally came around to take our drink order and left abruptly before the last person in our party could order. The queso appears as if it's made from velveeta- not Mexican cheese. The sangria was ok. Salsa was awful; thin sauce with large chunky vegetables- almost all onions and no garlic or cilantro. My husband ordered tamales which tasted like the frozen kind we get from Costco, not fresh. Our son ordered a burrito gordo which should have been loaded with lettuce, beef, rice, and beans- and had very little meat inside. Our daughter and I both ordered tacos. The worst I've ever had in a restaurant. The meat tasted exactly like saucy Old El Paso mix. The tomatoes were not fresh and seemed to be pre-packaged. The only cheese on any of our plates was finely shredded cheddar- obviously packaged from a food service. We love interacting with our server and oftentimes look past not-so-great food if the service is really good. We appreciate what it takes to interact with the general public and be really good. Our server attended our table twice- to take our drink order and then our food order. Drinks never refilled and chip baskets never refilled. Never returned until he left our tab. Casa Rico deserves credit for their food and their dedication to their community. I'm giving credit where it's due. I just ate here yet again last week and had the same great service and quality of food I've been getting since 1987 coming here as a young kid. SERVICE: Attentive, personable staff. I don't have a single complaint. If we need refills or more tortillas they're on it! If we need more time figuring out what to order, they're on it! Couldn't speak more highly of their staff. REGIONAL SPECIALTIES: During my last few visits I've ordered off of the "Especiales de la Casa" menu and again have no complaints. I haven't seen dishes like these at any other Mexican restaurant in the surrounding counties and appreciate the chef for introducing us to food beyond the typical burritos and enchiladas (though there's nothing wrong with those but these especiales are delicious!) They're served almost like fajitas - sizzling on a platter - and come with beans, rice, salsa, and tortillas. My favorite is the Margarita Chicken. As much as I like trying other things this is my go to. FOOD: If you're not in the mood for a filling Mexican meal the avocado salad hits the spot! Their tacos are also pretty good - they're offered in a variety of forms which makes for some unique options. Something I certainly haven't seen elsewhere.
