Honestly, you just really have to see it to believe it! in short, the Empie family bought the property in 1974, then hired a New Mexico architect to build a home in and around the boulders...the end result is this great home! The Empies sold the house to the Yavapai in 2005, who generally rent out the home for events. That's where the "WHO you know" part came in as far as getting a personal tour of this amazing place...our uncle does a lot of catering events, so he "knows" people. Lucky for us! It was just the four of having the whole place to ourselves...it was a wonderful experience. I've attached a few photos, but the pics don't do this place justice. It's almost like walking thru Fred Flintstone's house, except updated furnishings and amenities :) Oh, and you can't beat the views...I love the desert views and landscapes. So peaceful. If you ever get the chance to visit this place, please do yourself a favor and do so. If you like it half as much as I did, you'll leave happy :)

The tour guide Joseph was so kind and full of energy. The video you watch when you get there is a very heart felt explanation of the passion to continue this community. They own 800 acres and the property is built on 20 acres, it was built between 1971-1975 for the main spaces that are shared. 45 people live there but could range to 80. They show how the products and structure are made. I had no clue about silk casts and loved the hands on understanding and history. They have concerts, events, gatherings. Etc at the amphitheater. Check out the website. The cafe is closed. You can stay as a hotel guest overnight. They offer apprenticeship also.

Clearly what the original architect had in mind many years ago never came to fruition as it really hasn't changed in years. Is appears to be a small artist community but we didn't see anything going on at the moment so couldn't tell if it id still active or they make everything south in Scottsdale at Cosanti. There is a gift shop where you can watch a brief video on the history and learn about their wind chime creations. Personally I've received many of the wind chimes over the last 20 years for housewarmings or Christmas gifts. Each is unique. The greeter in the gift shop was friendly and stated there is a tour available as well. We didn't have time for the tour but purchased a couple of small gifts. He suggested visiting the Scottsdale location as well which is called Cosanti. I had no idea it was located in Scott's well. Will check it out.

Their website boasts wonderful amenities - a beautiful deck, BBQ, pool and hot tub. Those amenities are only available to people staying for free who are friends of the owners. If you are paying for the RV spot and using the stables for the horses, do not expect to use any amenities. Previous owner provided cleaning and bedding for the horses. Current owner does not. Previous owner allowed any paying guest full access to the property. Current owner does not. If you are staying in the RV spot, watch out for cactus as they do not maintain the landscaping. Your vehicle may get scraped by brush. You can share the outdoor sitting area with the property manager - but the furniture is dirty and decrepit. The property manager lives on-site in an RV. They smoke, so if you want to use that outdoor space, you will share their smoke as well. Wifi Internet is available, but it is iffy. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Current owners are charging the same amount as the previous owners minus any hospitality. Their rates for the RV site and stables are probably one of the most expensive in the entire state of Arizona. Basically, you will be paying top dollar for bottom dollar accommodations. Current owners are delusional and very good at playing mind games. Prepare to be gaslighted on a daily basis. One day they will offer an amenity and the next day they will take it away. If you are a masochist and enjoy paying a huge amount of money to be abused, this is the place to stay. We have traveled all around the country with our horses. This is the ONLY place we have stayed where we had to fight with the owners to get our money back (He demanded payment in full upon our arrival) and the only place we have stayed where we have been harassed because we wanted to use what we were paying for.

The reason we came back on May 23 was because the food and service was so good on our first visit, as we were heading to the Grand Canyon, that we resolved to stop in on our return to Phoenix later that week. Our server on our first visit was Julie, and she was friendly, attentive, and very professional. My wife ordered the taco salad with ground beef. Julie explained that the ground beef used is also used for the chili, and that it was a little spicy. My wife is sensitive to spicy food, but she decided to give it a try. It was the highlight of her meal; just the right amount of heat and not overly spicy, and rest of the salad was fresh and tasty. The cranberry walnut salad I ordered was also fresh and tasty, although the chicken was a bit dry. Our son ordered the home made biscuits and gravy, which he said were delicious. The gravy was amongst the best he's had, and it contained bits of sausage. The serving sizes were all very generous, so there was no room for pie, unfortunately. Julie invited us to come back next week and leave room for pie, so we did just that. It was a really good meal, and a great way to start our vacation, worthy of five stars. Business was relatively slow on our first visit, but, when we visited the following Saturday, the restaurant was packed, since Memorial Day is the start of the summer travel season. We were seated within 15 minutes and were promptly greeted by Dakota. She told us the kitchen was out of numerous items and gave us a few minutes to look over the menus. One of the menus was quite dirty, with what seemed like maple syrup on the plastic-covered page. This time, I ordered the rib basket appetizer, my wife ordered a chopped salad with grilled chicken, and our son ordered the Rock Springs burger. On our first visit, the food took 10-15 minutes to arrive, on this visit, it took nearly 30 minutes. The ribs were meaty, but were room temperature, and seasoning was light and unremarkable. My wife's chopped salad was stacked high and served on a regular plate. There was so much salad that it was difficult for her to eat without the salad ending up on the table and, after 15 minutes, it looked like she'd hardly made a dent in it. She said the chicken was very dry, and ended up leaving more than half or her salad uneaten. Our son had no complaints about the burger, which appeared to be cooked perfectly. We each ended up getting a slice of the Dutch crust apple pie ala mode, which was served warm with a generous scoop of high quality vanilla ice cream. Rock Springs Cafe has quite a history, and the decor really shows its Western history. However, it looks like it hasn't been refreshed in nearly 20 years, and some of the posters, plaques and other things on the wall are in rough shape. The men's bathroom are unique, furnished with urinals made from beer kegs and more license plates than you can count. Rock Springs Cafe was a great stop for us, twice, and we plan to return on our next visit to the Grand Canyon.

The property is beautiful, quiet, and very clean, with plenty of space to relax. Even though we booked last minute, we were still able to get into several classes and activities, including a few we had been waitlisted for. Our room was also very nice and spotless. What truly stood out was the amazing staff. Kathleen at the front desk kindly helped check my boyfriend in early when my flight was delayed by five hours and the reservation was under my name. We also had a fantastic meal at Terras with Yolanda (highly recommend the Eggplant) and had a blast doing the high ropes course with Abe. The biggest thank you goes to Yessica in housekeeping. On the morning of checkout I unknowingly lost a one-carat diamond earring that even though was insured, I was devastated to have lost. I didn't realize it wasn't in my ear until I was almost at the airport and promptly called the resort. Yessica immediately organized a search, and although it wasn't in our bathroom as I originally thought, her team eventually located it elsewhere on the property near the restaurant/lobby. I am incredibly grateful to Yessica and the CIVANA team for going above and beyond to return something so meaningful. I will absolutely recommend this resort to everyone I know. You will arrived stressed and overstimulated and leave with a sense of calm, connection and with a restored faith in humanity.
