The wife and I were excited to try a new "Tex-Mex" place but were quickly deceived into thinking this was a new place. Like everyone else in the area, we used to be huge fans of Plaza Azteca but over the years their quality and service has gone downhill. We made the switch to a more authentic Mexican restaurant nearby and haven't looked back until we tried this place. It was a surprise to us to see one of the owners of Plaza Azteca checking in on customers at Casa Tezcal. At second glance of their menu, I quickly put two and two together and realized the menu was an almost exact copy of Plaza Azteca with the main difference being the prices. You're paying more at Casa Tezcal for the upscale atmosphere. The food is decent, but there are better options to choose from. I have no doubt this place will be successful due to the location, atmosphere, and service which were all amazing. I just don't think the quality of their dishes is anything worth celebrating. Went here for lunch today. It was our first visit, but it will not be our last. Our server, Jose, was very friendly and knowledgable. The food was so fresh and flavorful. My husband had empanadas and a salad and I had a lunch chimichanga. The portions were perfect. The empanadas were fantastic - light, crunchy, flavorful. The mango salsa was so refreshing. My chimichanga had flavorful chicken and it wasn't heavy. We also each had a small margarita and they were bright and fresh and you could tell they were made by hand- not some bottled sticky sweet mix.
