Stopped in on Tuesday for a celebration lunch! We took note of the $5 house Margarita special and enjoyed 2 rounds of those. I love how efficient the service here is and we were the only patrons in the restaurant when we arrived. The food was delicious as always and we love the self serve salsa bar (white dip is our fave). My bf had the lunch carnitas which was still a good portion and delicious. I had shrimp chimichangas ($2 upcharge) and a soft taco (I love that the tacos here are always filled with meat and not flat and lump like other places). All our food was fresh and seasoned well and it was nice to enjoy the restaurant while it wasn't too crowded. Always a recommendation for me! read more

Lunch stop during my time in Richmond getting my car fixed. I finally got the Birria Tacos I have been craving for a year! When I walked in, I admired the authentic decor and the restaurant had a decent vibe. The staff that greeted me could work on making guests feel welcome, but maybe the busy lunch time had left them feeling some kind of way. As a lone diner, they sat me in a decent location out of the way of the hustle and bustle of the busy lunch crowd. My waitress definitely needed a few reminders on how to make a guest feel welcome as well. I won't harp on the welcome because the food was amazing! I started with guacamole and chips and the guacamole was great! A huge portion for the price and it tasted very fresh! Literally there's nothing not to like. Unlimited chips and salsa, delicious food, big size portions, and salsa bar for dine-in with 6-8 different delicious sauces to choose from with your meal. Lots of vegetarian options to choose from, many of them unique from other Mexican restaurants. Came in for an early dinner on a Saturday. There were a few people in there but it wasn't packed. We sat right away. We ordered a round of house margaritas on the rocks. The drinks looked great but I felt like they were a little weak. It wasn't a cheap drink, wish it had a little more kick. My daughter had the Mac and cheese with rice. It was out of the box Mac and cheese. Nothing special. I got the steak tacos. There were 3 tacos that came with a cilantro mix and a hot salsa. I put a lot of the salsa on and I thought I was going to die. It was good but I'm not huge in hot. I also had a chicken tamale. I thought it was good but it wasn't what I was expecting. I would go back but it is a bit of a ride and there are a few places closer to me that I prefer. read more

Well I didn't take any pictures of our food, but we ate every bit of it. We started with the simple white cheese dip. For us, it was the perfect consistency. Not watery and not lumpy and thick. The table salsa was low spice. Not bad as there is a whole salsa bar that is available with a variety of flavors and heat. We tried the guacamole salsa and creamy jalapeño. Very good! As for our entrees, the hubs had Tex Mex fajitas, and I had the pollo encebollado. Both came out hot and quick. Very well seasoned. Our server was friendly and stayed on top of our chips and drinks. I've been to The Blue Hill twice now. Both times have been a pleasant experience. The wait staff are super nice and I feel a good vibe eating here. I personally like the location because it feels tucked away in a hidden area of Midlothian. I've been here twice and both times I ordered the carnitas platter. On my first visit the flavors were picture perfect. Sadly, on my most recent trip the flavors were rather bland and the pork was dry. Before I go down that path let's start with the good things. El Cerro Azul gets high marks for having good Spanish rice with NO PEAS OR CARROTS. I wish all Virginia based Mexican restaurants understood this. They also didn't serve the rice in some dumb cone shape. The refried beans are also decent in flavor with melted cheese on top. El Cerro features an eight selection salsa bar which I think is a great idea. Other high marks include the flavors of Jarritos soda they stock. Few restaurants and grocery stores carry the strawberry and pineapple flavors. They also carry Mexican coke in the big 1 liter bottles. Now for the bad stuff. The plating here is abysmal and needs some serious work. This isn't a home, this is a restaurant, show a little pride in your food and plate the food with some finesse. Check out some of my other carnitas pictures for reference. The portions could be a little bigger as well. Again, just look at my pictures to see what I mean. Look, while I appreciate you guys looking out for my waistline, I came out to eat Mexican food to punish my health not improve it. I need an extra scoop of both the rice and the beans and just one more sprinkle of cheese on those beans. I want to hate myself after gorging on all that food. In closing, I will be back mostly because of the location and convenience. The food is good for what it is. This is still Virginia after all so the burritos and Chimichangas will forever look like something out of a horror movie. I have had better Mexican food. This place is really dark and not very large. Service is good think it is the family who owns it.

My experience was everything I'd hoped for! I love a good plate of huevos con chorizo and I add cheese to it. They did it perfectly! The ratio of eggs to chorizo was on point! I'd been missing the flavors of Texas and I saw it on the menu so I went for it. I'm so glad that I did! It was full of flavor! It was served with classic rice and refried beans which both were delicious. The plate comes with tortillas and I opted for flour. So good! My daughter ordered the arroz con pollo and it was delicious as well! The decor is really cute and the salsa bar is a nice touch. The patron bottle light fixtures slay seriously! The margaritas are good as well as the service. I love being greeted with a smile and served with laughter. They have a really nice bar area perfect for happy hour. My FAVORITE Mexican restaurant in the area. Fresh chips and tasty salsa arrive shortly after being seated each time we visit. But the specialty salsa bar is awesome. Eight types to choose from. "white" sauce is popular for those who don't like spicy however I prefer the green or "beet" salsa that was offered on my last visit. Guacamole is only $3 and a great value. My usual go to dish is the Carnitas platter because of the generous size but on my last visit I tried the Los Tostitos and was very please. I loved the marinated carrots that came along side. Popped in today for lunch. A very nice spot in the corner of a shopping center. Lots of parking. Chips and salsa were very good. Their lunch menu is offered every day not just M-F. I ordered the carne asada tacos dinner (3 vice 2 tacos). Came with a cup of onions/cilantro and a cup of hot tomatillo salsa. Honestly the salsa isn't hot more medium. The cup of charro beans were very tasty. Definitely glad I got this. My wife got the enchiladas verdes which she loved. So glad we came here. This was our 3rd or 4th visit, obviously we thought it was good enough for a return trip. Wrong. About 6:30 Saturday evening, busy but not crowded. Got seated right away. Overall, service was good. Beer was good. Wish I could stop there. Wife got a margarita on the rocks. We were sitting by the bar and could watch them fix it. Poured it out of a plastic jug. When we drank it, it was very sweet and very tame ... very little alcoholic taste. Borderline undrinkable. And then we got the bill ... $11.99! For a terrible drink. I got el Fresco, a chicken dish. It was ok. Wife tried it, said it was bland, not worth ordering again. She had enchiladas verdes. Ok, but just ok. Bottom line: expensive forgettable meal, there are better places to go. read more

Very disappointed! Based on the previous reviews and my love for Mexican food I decided to order take out and try El Cerro Azul Mexican Restaurant. I ended up not eating my food as they messed up my order. I ordered the dinner fried chimichanga meal. My food was soggy and the chimichanga was not fried and very soggy due to the retried beans which were tasteless and the chicken not no flavor. I ordered rice and did not get any rice. I also ordered the lunch taco salad. The shell was soggy and the food was also flavorless. I most likely will not return and do not recommend this Mexican restaurant. read more

Never more than a 20 min wait for being a small place. Service is decent. Sometimes I have to really be intentional about asking for something because they are so busy. They used to have my favorite patron margarita with fresh lime and orange juice, but they know longer make it sadly. I have not found a margarita that is the same there since. The food is great an always fresh! The cheese sauce on the shrimp was strange, maybe because it was Monterrey jack? Just didn't blend well with sweet peppers. Alas, it was bound to happen sooner or later, and it finally has: my first 1 Star review. I'm not terribly happy about it, but this experience was just downright bad from top to bottom. We arrived a little after noon on a Sunday with a party of 8, and despite our large party, we were sat right away (in hindsight, the restaurant was pretty empty; perhaps that should have been a warning). We were seated for, literally, less than 2 minutes before we were asked to order. I politely told the server that this was our first time at the restaurant and needed more time. Again, literally, less than 2 minutes later, he was back again. Thankfully, our drink order was enough to buy us some time to actually look at the menu and try to figure out what to order. But just a few short minutes later, he was back again. My measuring stick for Mexican restaurants is their Carnitas, so ordering for me was a breeze. It wasn't that easy for the wife, who after the waiter came back for a 3rd time in less than 10 minutes, just picked something. Fast forward to the rest of our meal: we never saw this waiter again after initially ordering. Frustrating would be an understatement. We ordered two cheese dips for the table, and for some reason, is served in a MASSIVELY oversized bowl. Like, punchbowl big. It just made no sense. The cheese itself was fine, nothing to write home about, but having two of these giant bowls on the table really limited our table space, particularly after our food arrived. Sadly, once my food did arrive, it was the worst of any Mexican restaurant that I've visited in RVA. The Carnitas were dry and tough, and much of the pieces were so gnarly that I couldn't cut though them with a knife. The rice was hard and the beans were lumpy and flavorless (even despite the attempted assist from a sprinkle of cheese). It was a plate full of fail. To make matters worse, I needed several refills to try and re-moisten the meat as I chewed and our once "Johnny on the spot" server was no where to be found. I had to flag down two other random servers for my refills. Particularly not good when the restaurant is mostly empty. When it came time to separate the checks into 2 checks of 4 and pay, we had to explain the breakout 3 different times, and when the bills finally came, they were not only incorrect, but were missing the cheese dips. After taking our credit cards, a different server came back and let us know that the server forgot to charge us for the dip and re-charged us for what I mistakenly thought was serendipity to make up for the sub-par food and spotty service. Maybe it's just me, but I probably would have let it ride after a very bumpy lunch service. Poor service end-to-end, sub-par food, and a missed opportunity to turn it around all add up to my first 1 Star review. If you have a craving for Mexican and are in this area, do yourself a favor and go to Don Pepe off Hull St. near Genito Rd. Better on every dimension. read more

I came here with family on a Friday for lunch. It was not terribly busy and we were seated right away. I ordered the Burrito Pancho with Carnitas. I appreciated that they were willing to be flexible and allow me to substitute Carnitas. The burrito was big and covered with delicious nacho cheese. I eagerly anticipated my first bite. Unfortunately, I found the carnitas to be dry. I was expecting a soft, melt-in-your mouth consistency from the slow-cooked pork. The pieces in my burrito were chewy and hard. The other ingredients in the burrito were good though. The service was very attentive. Our waitress was there when we needed her which was nice. Everyone else in our party enjoyed their meals so I'd probably return to El Cerro Azul. I would stay away from the Carnitas next time though. read more
