My husband and I ordered carnitas, his a platter mine the burrito. It was unlike any carinita we have had, from TX, AZ, NM etc. We were told they make it differently but theirs is grey and flavorless slices of meat (NOT TENDER CRISPY CHUNKS OF PORK) and cut better with a knife than fork. The beans and rice were only so-so as well as the sopapillas which were flat and oily. The guacamole had no snap to it, just green mush. I added the "hot" salsa to give it flavor. I've been to Casa Vallarta on a couple of occasions and I've really enjoyed it both times. The food is very good and the staff is very friendly. They have a pretty good drink menu and there's a lot of food options. Both times, I have gotten a grilled chicken dish that comes with beans and it is fantastic. The food is very "light," in the sense that you don't get anything that is too greasy or anything after. The authenticity of this restaurant makes it the undisputed Mexican restaurant of my family's choice. I just went with my mom for her birthday and there was coincidentally a live mariachi band playing and they sang her happy birthday! The staff was friendly and responsive. I am a huge fan of the Border, but grow weary of the long lines, large groups and screaming children. I chose to bypass the overpacked Border and try Casa Vallarta and I'll probably never go to the Border again! The drinks were twice as big (and cost twice as much) as the drinks at the Border, but there was an entire drink menu and the food menu is insanely better. We were immediately sat with no wait and I noticed that the bar was packed, which is always a good sign. Our server gave us a bean dip, salsa and chips. We ordered and our food came out 15 minutes later and it was amazing. We couldn't finish them, so we took it to go. Overall, I would recommend this estate any for Mexican food and I'll be trying to persuade my boyfriend to come here instead of the Border. There's not much of a price different in my opinion unless you factor in alcoholic beverages. read more

I'd give a 3.5 if that was an option, definitely better than any other Mexican food option on Rt1 in Saugus. Blows away Boarder Cafe (a.k.a. Eat). This review is based on my first and only visit so far. I would go back. The decor is good, it seemed clean inside. The hostess greeted us quickly upon arrival. I visited with my daughter on a Wed evening around 8PM. There were a few tables with customers, and the bar was busy. A mariachi band was strolling the room and playing at various spots. Someone (I think a bus girl) brought us a bowl of chips and salsa almost immediately. They have the kind of salsa that I like. It's not the chunky kind, it's a thin consistency with small chunks of vegetables that are easy to scoop up. Chips were typical, probably provided by their food purveyor. Our waiter was at the table less than one minute after the chips arrived and added a plate of refried bean dip to go with the chips. This is a nice touch, I enjoyed the bean dip. He took our drink orders, margaritas, one of the bars by which I measure a Mexican restaurant. I usually order a margarita made with a higher grade of tequila than well. Here I ordered their Cadillac margarita. My daughter got some frozen peach margarita off the drink menu, ugh- whose kid is that? First round was a little slow to come out, but not a problem. My margarita was very good, went down quickly and round two service was quicker than round one. My daughter nursed hers all evening. For food I judge Mexican restaurants based on two different dishes. Mole and enchiladas with salsa verde. This time I chose mole. My daughter ordered chicken tacos (she doesn't eat beef or pork). The food came quickly, it was hot, the presentation was good. My enchiladas were guarded on the plate by sizable amounts of rice and refried beans. This is where the experience went a bit off for me. The mole was thin, almost runny and it didn't have a full rich flavor I expect from a mole. It's almost like they were running out of it at the end of the night and thinned out what they had left with chicken stock to create my meal. Mole was a disappointment. My daughter ate all three of her tacos, no comment on the taste or preparation. Hers came with black beans, which she didn't touch. I ended up having tres margarita, those passed my test. The mole I would give a grade of F. The balance of the experience was a solid A. I would definitely stop here again. If you are north bound on Rt1 go right past boarder cafe and stop here. One other comment, the bar was very busy for a rainy Wednesday evening the week after thanksgiving. It seemed the folks there were having a good time singing with the mariachi band, which was very good as far as mariachi bands go. Next time I will belly up to the bar. The mariachi band is a nice touch, not something you see in Boston very often. About me, Colorado native, the first 30ish years of my life were spent in the west/sw. The last 20 on the north shore. Good Mexican food is rare around here, so I'm always looking. read more

Our family agrees that this is now the best Mexican restaurant in the area. With its traditional ambiance and menu offering all kinds of dishes from enchiladas to sopa albondigas to tamales, there is something for everyone. We had enchiladas mole, tamale, and a trio of meats called tres amigos. Everything was delicious; the beverages were also perfect. Watch out for the house margarita: it is strong and had me grinning half way through. There are extras here like bean dip with salsa and chips, and a final tequila shot for the grown ups (which did not help my grinning problem). The flan was declared superior by my son. Who would not like a restaurant that gives you a free shot of tequila for dessert??? Located on Route 1 North there are many choices for good food. This restaurant def stands out. There is outdoor and indoor seating. It is great for families and large groups. I've been here many times and have usually had a positive experience. However, I ordered a vegetarian dish tonight to go due to COVID-19. When I opened it at home I discovered there was beef inside it. Now I am concerned about cross contamination in their kitchen and their general kitchen practices. I literally left this place a stronger woman. Not only was the food amazing but the parking lot ambience was to die for. We told the waiter it was our first Casa Vallarta experience and he did not disappoint. The entire staff made a point to come up to our party and introduce themselves. This place just opened 3 days ago. Rt 1 doesn't really have good Mexican options, but it does now. Margaritas were delicious, queso dip was perfect, my chicken chimichanga was amazing. Looked like there was a whole chicken breast inside! My girlfriend loved her spinach chimichanga too. Tons of vegetarian options. I was expecting service to be a little slow as it had just opened and everyone was still settling into a groove, but I was wrong. Service was quick and our food came promptly. One of my favorite things: they give you chips, salsa, AND bean dip when you sit down. The salsa was wicked fresh. I will definitely be back. They have a Mango salad dressing that hooked me + Mexican tacos with Mango = YES please! :) If you like to indulge in some Margaritas, they have like 2 pages of different kind - I normally stick to the original and can't go wrong. We have been there with our 1 year old and the servers have always been super attentive and welcoming, making our dinner as smooth as possible with her. I moved out here from California a year ago, and just haven't found a good spot for authentic Mexican. When I heard about this new place, and saw the amazing reviews - I had hope. Last night I came in around 7PM with my mom and cousin. They definitely made an effort with decor, but the place seemed chaotic with people, mariachi, and it seemed like a lot of servers and staff. We were served the chips and salsa with the bean dip right away. Chips were good, but the salsa tasted more like spaghetti sauce. Not a lot of flavor, and it didn't have that fresh, homemade taste. We ordered drinks (beers, water), and then the waiter came by to take our order right when the mariachi band was next to our table. He also decided it wasn't a good idea to write our orders down as we screamed them across the table to him. I like mariachi, it's atmosphere, but after we placed our orders we literally said, "well, let's see what we get!". My mom wanted two carnitas tacos and one chicken taco with a side of beans. She ended up getting two chicken tacos and one beef taco. I tried the beef taco and it both looked and tasted like Taco Bell. My cousin got a chicken quesadilla which wasn't bad according to her. Really big, and she had leftovers. I got an enchilada meal. There weren't any offerings of a normal enchilada with red sauce, so I winged it and got one that had some cheese sauce. The enchiladas had no actual cheese on the inside, and the cheese sauce tasted like mac and cheese sauce on top of a chicken taco. It was weird. I ended up picking the chicken out from the inside. I gave it a shot, they made an effort..but fell short for me. I won't argue that the prices were reasonable, and probably a great spot to take a family with kids to. Great service! The young lady that our waitress, Shirley (I believe), was very attentive and courteous. The food was great and authentic. They had a variety of options to choose. I didn't get an alcoholic beverage but the must of have over 20 different types of mixed drinks to choose. I was very pleased with the fact that they had more options for the kids menu other than your typical chicken fingers and burgers. My kids very much enjoyed their crunchy chicken taco and chicken enchilada both with French fries as their sides. When you are seated they immediately bring you chips with salsa and a bean dip, which both were very good. They also brought out a non-spicy salsa for my kids. Nah. I don't think so. I can see that this place is very popular and frequented by area Latin Americans, but they have a very strange idea of what "carnitas" is. It shouldn't taste like something my mom threw in the slow cooker this morning. It most definitely should be shredded. The waitress seemed confused when we both wanted something with carnitas. I understand that it literally means "little meats", but 99% of the time it means shredded pork. Why the confusion if I say, "carnitas tacos, please"? The only Mexican restaurant I will continue to go to. They go out of their way to make you enjoy your visit. The food is delicious, the portions are generous, the taste is authentic. They served us free chips and salsa along with another authentic delicious dish, refried beans, as appetizers.The owner and his staff are warm and friendly, making sure at all times that you are enjoying your food. My favorite mexican spot that actually has some flavorful food unlike most places around here. Also a huge plus that they provide refried beans with their chips. I've only stuck to steak dishes and can only attest to those, but everything is solid and my picky family even thought it was good. I was amazed at how busy both times I came were when this place only opened up not too long ago. Saugus was definitely missing a good Mexican restaurant, and this place definitely fills the void. I also love how authentic this place feels, all the staff speak Spanish so you know you're not in one of those fake Mexican restaurants.
