I had dinner a Casablanca with my husband and in laws last Saturday when we spent the day exploring New Castle and Wilmington, and it was quite the experience. From the outside, it doesn't look like much; in fact, it looks like a bit of a dive from outside. But when you walk in, you are transported. The design of the restaurant is so special - community tables, pillows, tapestries, waterfall features, tiles, and belly dancing. The food was a little inconsistent. We shared many dishes: Bastilla (baked layers of filo dough, eggs, chicken, almonds, sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar); hummus (chickpeas, tahini, crushed garlic, lemon juice, sprinkled with paprika and olive oil, served with pita bread); Spanakopita; salad trio (eggplant salad, cucumber and tomato salad, and carrot salad); lamb tagine (stew of lamb, onions, and roasted peppers topped with honey and served with rice); Moroccan chicken with harissa cumin sauce; mujaddara (cracked bulgur wheat cooked with lentils and caramelized onions); and mint tea. I wish they didn't serve bottled waters, and the food was mostly good but not the most consistent. Our mujaddara wasn't served with the yogurt sauce listed on the menu, and the lamb with the tagine was incredibly fatty, making some of it inedible. The mint tea was really really really sweet - like syrup! I also wish the bastilla had a little less powdered sugar (I like on the dish, but it was A LOT of powdered sugar), and it was quite dry. But the eggplant salad, carrot salad, hummus, and mujaddara (even without the yogurt sauce) were great. I would happily have eaten just those dishes. They were busy - it's a popular place - but service was also a challenge. It took us almost a half hour to get the check and pay. I had to ask for the bill twice and then it still took a while to get it, for it to get picked up, and for it to come back to us. It's pretty bad if I'm considering walking up to the bar to get the check and pay. I loved the ambiance and the character. I loved that you can't tell how amazing it's going to be inside when you see the outside of the building - it's a surprise for sure. Not as good as it used to be. I wonder if it changed hands? The vegetarian dishes are wonderful, and the lemon chicken was good, but the lamb and beef and chicken kebabs were tough and inedible. The couscous with vegetables course was eliminated. The premeal handwash with rosewater has been replaced with plain water. The mint tea isn't presented as a "show" any longer (being poured from high above the glasses). I miss that authentic touch. Wow!! Incredible ambiance with waterfall, music (stage for weekend) and more!!! Couches are comfortable. Tables are low and easy to use. Service is personable and attentive. It is a bit of Morocco in Delaware This is a great destination event restaurant. Come and celebrate or escape. The 7 course meal for 25 or 35 dollars was fantastic. No thinking just gluttony. The meats fell off the bone and were uniquely spiced. My only complaint is that I ate much more than I should have and still took dessert home in a box. read more

This restaurant has been serving northern Delaware for a long time. It even survived a fire long ago! Having been to Morocco (Tangiers), we can say the dishes it offer were quite good, and has an authentic taste. However, the selection is quite limited, offering either a 7 course package meal, or order a la carte. The dining area is well decorated, it even features a couple of water falls. However, the seating furnishing can use an upgrade, as it seems dated and worn. On certain evenings, you can enjoy music and a belly dancer! Be sure to check availability. Totally recommend this place if you want a sometimes noisy but fun and extremely filling but delicious gigantic meal. Service is a little slow at times but friendly. Owner came over multiple times to chat and thank us for coming in. The food is amazing and plentiful. It was a Saturday evening so there was a belly dancer and a set menu. There were 5 of us, and the meal could have fed at least 6 or 7 comfortably for a paltry $25/head. As most people say, the outside is a little scary but inside is warm and inviting. Bathrooms could do with a little renovation for sure. We will certainly return, but this time with emptier stomachs. read more

We absolutely loved this place. It dues look rundown on the outside but one you get inside you will see the beauty of the place. We got the 7 course menus. Well worth it. The food was wonderful, the best course being the salad, chicken (fall off the bone chicken) & the fresh fruit, tea & baklava. Choose the Tarzan for the third course vs the skewers. The dancer was entertaining & enthusiastic. The service is good but you have to get their attention. I love that they have you wash your hands with rose water & they give you a nice size towel to drape on you & dry your hands. I do wish they give you plates but it is intended to be family style. Saw the reviews and love Moroccan food so we had to come here. When we walked in it was like stepping into another country were by the owner. I was very personable and accommodating.. The seating was spacious. A guy came around with a cart containing a metal bowl. We put our hands over the bowl and he poured water on them as we rinsed our hands off. We were given a large towel to drape over our legs to eat over and wipe our hand with. We ordered the 7 course meal and it was amazing!! We love this place! Servers and Managers were all friendly, Welcoming and accommodating. Food was excellent and plentiful. Be warned to come hungry and to pace yourself. We had tons of leftovers that were just as good the next day. Casablanca is a real bargain. The interior is wonderfully fun. Overall I would give a 4.5. We really enjoyed Casablanca and I'd highly recommend to anyone visiting in the area. I love Moroccan, but finding places is few and far between. The outside does not look like much, but inside is another story. It is a bit Disneyish version of Morocco, but fun enough to just embrace it. We were there on a quiet week night, so while we did make a reservation, we did not need it. During the weekend, it would probably be best to make one, especially as the other reviews mention a show. For me, Moroccan is a group experience, and Casablanca seems like it works best as shared. We did the "seven" course meal, it is a lot of food, but is not as overwhelming as that sounds as a few of the courses are together. It starts with hummus and pita, along with cold salads. The hummus is better than average, and the salads are phenomenal. We had the carrots, eggplant, and cucumber (salad trio). For simple, cold salads, there is a whole lot of flavor there (they also lasted well as leftovers). Next is a sweet and savoy pasty (I do not recall the name of), egg and meat cooked in a phyllo dough and topped with sugar. It was good, but probably my least favorite of what we had. The mains were lemon chicken and lamb with rice. The chicken is first and we devoured it, juicy, chicken literally falls off the bone. The lamb was good, but a little bit tough, though this could just be following the chicken, water would be dry. I did really like the rice that it came with. We were overly full at this point, but were still able to enjoy the baklava. This is also served with a literal bowl of whole fruit. We had enough leftover for a full meal for two people. The hummus, salads, and the lemon chicken were our favorites, if you want a smaller meal, have less people in your group, and do not want leftovers, you can leave happy with these dishes. The server is wonderful and all of the food comes at the right temperature and well paced. They do have a full bar, there was not really a good menu, their wine menu seemed to be by ordering full bottles, or perhaps we just misunderstood. There is also a small hooka lounge on the side of the restaurant. My friend, from Detroit, thought they were much better than average, especially in regards to the service. I used to LOVE Casablanca so when I came back to DE for a visit I made it a point to bring my family there for dinner before we flew home the next day. It was okay. That's the best I can say. The salads were good. The lemon chicken was good. Apparently they don't serve couscous anymore so that was a disappointment. The kabobs were fine I guess, but the baklava wasn't sweet at all, almost like they forgot the honey. All in all it was okay. Will I rush to go again next time I'm in DE? We arrived early Friday evening and were immediately greeted and seated. The restaurant's ambiance was authentic Moroccan. We were seated in comfortable cushioned booths surrounding by a few other guests. It wasn't as private as I wanted but didn't want to seem rude and asked to be seated away from everyone. As customs require, we were instructed to wash our hand with rose water at the table. Menu is predetermined with the exception of choosing your main entree. First course was Moroccan salad (cucumbers/tomatoes, eggplant, and carrots. Delicious and so well seasoned. Cucumber salad was my favorite. Second course was bastilla. Chicken and chickpea filling was a little bland but I did enjoyed the outer pastry shell. Third course we chose spicy chicken over the chicken with lemon. It wasn't as spicy as I assumed it would be but it wasn't too bad. Fourth course beef and lamb kabobs. Very good. Lamb was a little fatty but that's expected. Fifth course was couscous. It wasn't extremely favorable. Last course was baklava and fruit and tea. The dessert and tea was delicious. I'd love to have that tea at home. It was so sweet! The pickled veg plate was a great start, then the ridiculously good bastilla pie (it will be in my dreams forever)! Casablanca is a great concept and a fun place to come for a special occasion with a group. A 7-course Moroccan meal along with two belly dance shows on weekends makes for a fun night out. I recently brought my dad here for his birthday and the four of us had a great time. There were several large groups there than night also celebrating birthdays. Our reservation was for 7pm and the belly dance shows are at about 7:30 and 9. We were there a good 3 hours making our way through all the courses and got to take in both shows. The first course was a salad course with eggplant, cucumbers and carrots. The eggplant was very tasty. The fresh bread, whole chicken and some of the vegetarian entrees were very good. Most of the courses were good, except for one which was couscous - it was rather bland. The fresh fruit at the end of the evening was a nice touch, but the baklava was bit of a let down. I love me some good baklava. For $25 a person (alcohol extra) it's a really great deal. Casablanca is all about the experience. Go at least once, so grab some friends and family and head over. I brought boo to Casablanca (actually she drove me) because we were down the road at Christiana Mall (yay tax-free shopping!) and I had a soon to expire $50 groupon for this place. The price is $25 per person for a "7 course" meal, so the $50 groupon will cover that sans alcohol/soda/tip. Parking is plentiful and the restaurant is easy to access from the highway. We'd made a rezzy for 7 pm but showed up at 6:30 with no problem. It wasn't super busy on a Sunday evening of Labor Day weekend. They wash your hands with rosewater before the start of the meal, then it keeps coming! The first course was really the top 1 or 2 of the whole bunch. You're given as much pita as you desire from a giant basket (take at least 3 pieces), then served a plate of eggplant, cooked carrots and cucumber. All were tasty but the eggplant really steals the show. Following this was a pastilla, which is a Filo dough pastry with cinnamon and egg and I dunno what else. I really hate eggs so I didn't eat this, but boo liked it and it did smell good, as it has cinnamon on top. Next up is chicken with some olives. It was fall off the bone tender and very juicy and flavorful. Delicious. You'll then be given a choice of beef or chicken for the kebab course. My advice: get the chicken! The beef was burnt to a crisp, as were the onions. We still ate nearly all of it due to hunger but it left a lot to be desired. Following kebab was a fruit (course #6) and baklava plate. The fruit was plentiful: a whole banana, whole apple and while orange plus a ton of red grapes. You'll also be served mint tea to accompany this final course (or courses are they each considered to be one). The mint tea was way too sweet and when I asked if they could serve it without sugar, I was told no. That was disappointing as it would've been delicious sans sweetener. The fruit was fresh, but the baklava was extremely disappointing. It had no honey on top and it was mostly Filo, the filling was pretty bland. I've had much much better. The wine selection was VERY limited, many wines were "sold out" or not available by the glass, a bit baffling as this is how much of their profit is made. I had whatever the house red is (probably Carlo Rossi as this was an option by the bottle) and it was drinkable, especially for $4. Coke was $1 a can, not bad at all. I can't fault the restaurant for our neighbors who couldn't control their child and played their kid's TV show far too loudly. Is this what life has come to? We have to permanently distract our children? Don't bring them out to a decent restaurant if they can't sit still, that's my 2 cents. I digress... Overall, Casablanca is decent and worth a try if you've never had Moroccan cuisine. Restrooms were pretty clean, you'll leave full, the wine/beer are $4 and soda is only a buck. Just don't travel out of your way for it, be sure to get a groupon, and fill up on the eggplant and chicken courses. read more

Quite a unique establishment! The quality of the food here really depends on what you order. I ordered the falafel pita wrap which was a great value for $6 (for two halves)--typically these are $10 or more in my locality. The fresh ingredients and quality were surprisingly good, even for 9pm on a Sunday night in the middle of Delaware. However, the other items I tried, the baklava, lamb and beef gyro, and the Moroccan eggplant salad were mediocre to poor. At best, the falafel pita wrap warranted a 4 star and all the other items 2 stars. However, their interior is quite fanciful-- the ornate designs seemed quite traditional and reminded me of when I had visited Morocco many years ago. Additionally, we encountered a very friendly staff who knew 5(!) languages and wanted to learn a sixth. Her curiosity and bubbly warmth left me with a good taste; from immigrant to immigrant, I understood her experiences and sympathized with her story. Last but definitely not least, there is a hookah bar. When coming back from DC on a Sunday night looking for food, there were limited options in the middle of Delaware. Thus, we naturally only looked at the menu at Casablanca Restaurant to order quickly--we didn't see the part about the hookah bar. Needless to say, the bar was quite popular and seemed to be the main service. We were first surprised to see so many people dining in on a Sunday night--the parking lot was about 3/4 full--but then realized it was all for hookah. The smell was unmistakeable and wafted throughout the restaurant. However, as long as it doesn't bother you, it's not too off-putting. I've never tried hookah, but if that's your cup of tea, it seems they are the destination! Overall a 4-star due to the hit-or-miss on their menu but compensated for by the service. read more
