    As soon as we saw that Casablanca served Moroccan food, we were very interested in visiting. We hadn't had Moroccan food before but all the dishes seemed delicious and we especially wanted to see how the cuisine differs from the many Middle Eastern and Mediterranean places we've been to throughout Metro Detroit. We stopped in for a Saturday lunch and found the place almost completely empty, with only a single other table eating in. Service was generally friendly and quick although they were rather short staffed at the time, with only the owner and one cook in the house. While we were leaving another two people came in to work so we might have just been there too early. We settled on getting the Moroccan Combo for Two, which basically hit almost everything we wanted to try. Moroccan Combo for Two ($49.99) - This menu item comes with a variety of different Moroccan dishes, so it was a good choice given that we had a number of things we wanted to try. The combo comes with two sides, with a choice between rice, fries, soup (lentil or vegetable), and salad. We went with rice and salad. Salad - The salad is pretty standard cut vegetables (romaine, diced tomato, and diced cucumber) with a fattoush-like vinegrette. The portion size is a bit smaller than what I expected, given the full size salad we usually get from Middle Eastern and Mediterranean restaurants when we order the combos for two. Zaalook - This dish tempers down the smokiness of a baba ganoush with a bit of spice and tomato base. It has a slightly chunky texture so we could scoop it up with bread easily. Hummus - Pretty standard hummus, nothing much else to say. It goes well with the bread. We got a small round loaf of sliced Moroccan bread (khubz) with the two dips. The bread is served warm to the touch, with a good crust and moist interior. It seems to be mainly whole wheat based, adding a good earthiness. It's yeasted, and the inside is nice and fluffy. Half Bistilla - We were a bit taken aback at the sweet/savory combo here. Cinnamon on savory, fine, but powdered sugar on top as well? After we tasted it, it turned out to be really good. Fresh fried crispy phyllo surrounding a layer of spiced chicken and egg mixture, a layer of chopped cinnamon almonds, and then topped with ground cinnamon and powdered sugar.I think it was very smart of them to include a half serving in the combo, so we could take a risk and not have an entire entree to go through. Be sure to eat the bistilla quickly as the bottom can get soggy after sitting a while. Half Sweet Lamb Tagine - The sweet lamb is served with couscous that is extremely fluffy and pairs well with the meat. I do not typically like the gaminess of a Western lamb, but this one was tender, lean, and had almost none of the gamey lamb flavor. I guess they use fat-tailed sheep? Take this with a grain of salt, but I found that the lamb was some of the best I've had - the fact that I actually enjoyed eating this was a surprise. The lamb is covered in a delicious sauce flavored with bay leaves and herbs (cilantro stems + ?) mixed with diced onions and raisins. There are several large pieces of carrot included, which were tender with a sweetness that complemented the dish. Half Chicken Mhammar - This was served with the rice choice as mentioned above. The rice seems to be cooked in a salty chicken broth - we actually found it to be a little too salty for our tastes. It had the texture of a pilaf with a kind of al dente bite. They cook it with some fat to give it a smooth mouthfeel, and turmeric to give it a bright yellow appearance. The chicken is served in a tasty tomato and onion based sauce. The chicken had great flavor on the skin and had some crispier charred bits. The interior, as expected for most roast-type chickens, was kind of on the dry side especially on the breast meat, but this just allowed it to soak up more of the delicious sauce. Side Note: Casablanca charges a 4% credit card fee Casablanca was definitely a great introduction to Moroccan food. Everything was delicious and I feel like we got good value for the price. We'll be back in the future to try some other Moroccan specialties - we're thinking the Kafta Tagine and the Charmoula.

    My experience with Moroccan food is relatively limited --- it was SoCal-based where it was almost more about the entertainment, atmosphere with the tagines, the mint tea pour in a beautiful teapot from above head height.... Casablanca is not that. It's super no frills, but it's tasty and like walking into someone's home because of the hospitality and family-run nature of it! They also have Mediterranean dishes but we wanted to try some new things. We ordered: *MOROCCAN COMBO (Choose 4: Hummus, Baba Ghanoush, Zalook, Tabouli, or Falafel.) - We picked hummus, baba ghanoush, zalook (Fire-Roasted Eggplant puree with tomatoes, herbs, spice & olive oil ) and the tabouli. I've never had Zalook before and it was SO good. Super flavorful. All the dippie dips were delicious. It's served with this house made bread that we asked for seconds for! So tasty! *CHICKEN TAGINE WITH OLIVES ($17.99 - Slow-cooked Moroccan Chicken, olives; cooked with aromatic herbs & spices) - This was delicious - super juicy chicken. *KAFTA TAGINE (MOROCCAN MEATBALLS) [$18.99 Moroccan Meatballs seasoned with aromatic herbs & spices then sautéed with our house-made tomato sauce.] - I got my with cous cous ($+2.99) and had no regrets! I could tell this was a lamb blend of meatballs though as I'm a bit sensitive to the gameyness but honestly it wasn't too gamey at all. It was great the next day as well since the portions were huge! Definitely a good value. *HARISSA (House-made Hot Sauce! Chili pepper, spices & Extra-virgin olive oil) - definitely get this as a side. It packs a punch and there's definitely plenty to take home with you! I ended up using this to make tahini and harissa roasted cauliflower at home. It wasn't too busy at all for weekend night. There were mostly to-go orders. I'll have to come back to try the other menu items like the Bistilla, Charmoula, etc as well as save room for dessert.

    What a wonderful find! This restaurant is housed in an old Taco Bell which also makes it neat in my opinion. Love the old arched window and architecture of it all. The food is amazing! We started with the harissa, garlic paste, hummus with chicken l, falafel. An order of fresh bread was also brought to the table. It was warm and tasted delicious mixed into all of the sauces and dips we had. Yes it destroyed our breath but it was worth it. The harissa is spicy and the garlic paste is pure whipped heaven. I also had a medium fatoosh salad. It was quite large and packed full of flavor. The large would be big enough to share. The dressing was tangy and I really liked it. Everything we ordered I would order again. The service came from the owner who was a class act. He told us all about the food with so much love and pride. Bookmarked and highly recommended. Fairly priced this place is one you need to try. Don't let the exterior scare you off.

    I come here for high quality, fresh, and uplifting food when I'm too tired to cook. The restaurant is tucked in an assuming former Taco Bell. When I was dining by myself, the owner came and talked to me and shared a bit about his restaurant. This made in a positive impression on me. Subsequently, I invited two of my friends here--and they both LOVED it. This place is suitable for an Asian palette. A bit on the pricey side, but the food quality, customer service, and novelty make up for it. Recommendations: Lamb tagine: slow cooked meat, raising, sweet potatoes - get it! Bistilla: sweet and savory flavor crackled, layered meat pancake - get it! Rice pudding - get it! French fries - get it!

    What a gem of place... the food was very good! It was fresh and with a lot of love. The curb appeal is terrible I almost left and went somewhere else but the reviews are what kept me from leaving. The service and food was very good. It was my 1st time having Moroccan food. Now I just need to go to Morocco lol! If I'm ever in the area, I'd love to go again. The only thing I didn't like was the bread. I was expecting something like traditional middle eastern homemade pita bread but all I got was a loaf of bread I didn't care for. Other than that, I enjoyed everything. I highly recommend the mint tea.

    Fun fact, did you know that the Detroit Metropolitan area has the highest population of those of Middle Eastern descent in the United States? With that, hypothetically Detroit would have the best Middle Eastern food and Casablanca definitely didn't disappoint. - Sweet Lamb Tagine - I love the rice, oh my god! I can just eat a whole plate with just that without any meat. I really appreciated the raisins to cut the salinity of the lamb which was extremely tender. Definitely the better one out of the two. - Casablanca Whole Grilled Chicken - The chicken itself was a little bit dry but the flavor is spot on. I'm so impressed by how much they give you, definitely can feed a family of 4. Once again, the rice is my favorite part. Overall, delicious meal at Casablanca especially the rice. Excited to try more other Middle Eastern food in the Detroit area.

    Located in a former location of a Taco Bell, what Casablanca lacks in ambiance it makes up for in flavors and service. I was heading back through Ypsi after running some errands and a run to Casablanca seemed like a good idea. We hadn't been yet but I'd heard great things and I was itching to try something new for dinner. I placed an order online and, after my final curbside pick up at the nearby Joann's, I was able to swing by and scoop up our order. It was ready for me by the time I arrived and a quick hello and thank you to the staff and a friendly pick up had me back on my way. My husband and I split the Casablanca combo for 2 which came with 1 kafta, 1 tawook, 1 kabob, mixed shwarma, 3 falafel, hummus, and garlic sauce. I also read so much about their bistilla that I had to try it, so we ordered the appetizer size. OMG so much food. So much DELICIOUS food. I was floored. We had leftovers for 3 days and everything was top notch. The bistilla was incredible, too. Slightly sweet, slightly savory, and encased in a delicious flaky phylo (herb saffron chicken, orange blossom water, honey, almonds powdered sugar, and cinnamon). I'd order it as an entree on it's own, for sure. I look forward to coming back and trying even more, particularly of their Moroccan specialties!

    Few things are better than discovering a new restaurant that meets or exceeds your expectations. After hovering on our "we should try that sometime" list, my husband and I decided that today was the day for Casablanca. I perused Yelp for inspiration on what to order, and ultimately decided on something light: Fatoush Salad and an order of Moroccan chicken wings. He went with an order of the chicken wings and the lamb tangine. Online ordering was easy, and we were soon able to pick up our meal (we are in the throes of 2020 restaurant lockdown and sadly cannot dine in). The staff was so friendly and happy to see us grabbing our pickup order. Once back home, we unpacked our goodness. I think this is a place where you can't go wrong no matter what you order. Thinking of ordering the wings? Go for it. Want to be healthy and get the fatoush salad? Do it, and try and figure out the dressing recipe while you're at it. Lamb tangine sounding better to you? You'll love it (he let me have a bite of his, so I can vouch for it). All said and done, we have a new place where we will look forward to ordering carryout, and to dining in when we can do that again!

    The food is tasty but the meat portion size is undesirable for the price near $30.00. When I tell you it disappointed me to write this review. But we have to hold our people accountable to do better. Will revisit and comment.

More dry the next day when I reheated the leftovers. It probably would have been incredible eaten fresh in the restaurant. The rice was good and I liked the texture. The veggies were crisp but slightly too charred for my liking. I was surprised the soup didn't have rice, but the flavors were on point and I really enjoyed it. As previously mentioned, the pita and garlic sauce were superb. I easily could have gotten three meals out of this one entree- an incredible value. I'll definitely try it again!

I'd planned to eat in, but that doesn' t seem to be what they're set up for these days. There are some tables along the walls, but no one was sitting at them and there were no placemats, silverware etc. set down. The center of the restaurant was wide open and empty, and the whole place had this air of bereftness. I'd swear I'd walked back into late 2020. There were some take-out orders on the counter, and guess those represent the bulk of their business now. The person at the counter seemed surprised when I said I was there to order, not pick up, and confused by taking my order in person. What I ordered was a greek salad w/ chicken. That would be a few minutes, she said, since she would have to go into the kitchen and cook the chicken. Must have been the only one working. I'd expected to to wait a bit, so I sat down at one of the tables along the wall, but had already decided I was going to take the salad to go. The atmosphere was kind of depressing, and I didn't like the picture of me sitting alone in the empty restaurant under the gaze of the lone employee. I'd rather eat alone in my car. Plus, there was an unpleasant rancid smell hanging about. Once I'd parked in a quiet, shady spot and opened the clamshell, my first look at the salad wasn't encouraging. Lettuce seemed tough and a bit dry, lot of outer leaves. Only a light sprinkling of feta, and no pepperoncini. The kalamatas were pale and very hard--it took some pushing to get a fork into one. When I ate one it had little flavor. I didn't eat any more. Two cups of creamy-style greek dressing were tucked into the greens, and these tasted more oily than tangy. And I should menton, I paid $20 for this delightful entree. I get greek salads fairly regularly, and have had them at many diners and middle eastern restaurants, and I can say this was the second worst one I have ever had. The only saving grace to it was the chicken. A heaping portion of it, very tender and lightly seasoned. The chicken is the only reason this place gets two stars instead of one. If the hummus and tabouli here are decent, a few slices of the chicken with those would make a pretty good meal. But in spite of the glowing yelps others have given, I am not at all inclined to return and confirm that.

We stood in the lobby for some time before three other groups showed up: a white couple, a white woman with her toddler, and a white couple with a baby. Eventually, the hostess appeared, and looking only toward the white patrons, asked how many were in each party. Never asked me. I volunteered that there were two of us. She said it wld be 10 min. When she returned, she motioned to the white woman and toddler, and proceeded to seat them. When she returned, she told the white couple with the baby to follow her. I said, "actually, we were ahead of them, " which she ignored. Her behavior was so offensive that even the white couple volunteered, "she was ahead of us." Reluctantly, she told all of us to follow. She seated all of us at our tables. I asked if they had crayons or paper for kids. She rolled her eyes and pretended not to understand English. Note that she addressed us in English in the lobby. I'll think twice about going back. Without a doubt, the food is amazing. But I don't want to subject my kid to that kind of abuse.
