Lodge is wonderful- friendly staff, warm beds, and surroundings are so quiet you can hear the river as you drop off to sleep. Well worth the stop. We stayed 3 days. Restaurant food is extremely good, even though they're coping with a shortage of staff. Walk in, pick a table, order at the register, and sit down. I give this four out of five stars for the whole place - cabin and restaurant. If I could rate individually it would be four stars for the cabin and three for the restaurant. So, for the restaurant - we were there and it wasn't too busy at first but the waitress was clearly overworked (they were understaffed, it was clear) and was entirely inattentive. It was stressful anytime we needed to ask for anything or get the check because she was never anywhere to be found or racing around to other tables. My husband got the walleye. It was ok, he said, but he kept picking bones out of his mouth. So. Many. Fishbones. He liked the broccolini though. And I appreciated that this place had vegetarian options. I got the chicken and mushroom pasta with no chicken and it was pretty good. Definitely decent. It needed something else, like broccolini actually. For dessert we shared a "lava" cake with zero lava in it. It was cooked through and rubbery. But we were hungry from hiking all day so we finished everything. For what they charge - not worth it. But the place seemed clean and had a good variety of food and drink from which to choose. The cabin was darling! It was an "just what you need and nothing you don't" type of place which I loved. Yes it was older, that was evident in the bathroom, things were a little rough around the edges. And the furniture was mismatched and older but we didn't care. It was very clean and cute with nice big windows and a little view of Lake Superior. Perfect for us! My only complaint was that it was very expensive to stay here, in my opinion. My wife and I stayed here as part of our long overdue honeymoon. This place was a wonderful place to stay if you are looking for reasonable accommodations in the Grand Marais / lutsen area. It wasn't a high end lodge, but it was comfortable and has great access to the cascade state park. We ate at the restaurant at the lodge for 4 of our meals. The breakfast was great, especially the eggs Benedict. Burgers were pretty good too. Prices for dinner could be a little lower but due to the seasonality of the area I understand. If you are looking for a reasonable place to stay while in the area I would recommend. Especially if you are hiking at the cascade park. The trails were great. read more

Visited Cascade restaurant while up on the north shore. Have to order and pay when entering the restaurant then food is brought out to your table when ready. We ordered the fish and chips, tuna melt, and flatbread pepperoni pizza and the food was all well prepared and tasted great. Service on the other hand was very poor, don't expect anyone to check on you after dropping off your food and do not expect any refills on drinks unless you take them up yourself. read more

Wonderful menu items and excellent bar set in a cozy and fun setting with Views of Lake Superior. My husband and I visited recently and loved the food, went back multiple times! Some of the best martinis we have had and the pickle fries earn 2 thumbs up. Had the Apple Fritter French Toast and was amazing. The restaurant was extremely disappointing, expensive, and not worth it. The service was sub par. Got the corned beef Hash, and I've never eaten a hash that was the texture as if it had been boiled, and lacking entirely of any flavor. Our server didn't check on us during the entirety of our meal. We stopped in for dinner at 5 on a Tuesday and there were two other tables seated, one done and one had already ordered. We were asked if we wanted to prepay the tip -- we did. Would not recommend doing that. Food was great. The spinach artichoke dip was excellent. No beverages were refilled when the sandwiches arrived and the little one had not gotten any milk yet. We weren't asked if we needed anything. All the food arrived as ordered with special requests and was excellent - we had a couple of different burgers, including the one with different types of meat, and the Cuban. All really were well above average. The coleslaw was very good, sweet potato fries were good and mixed reviews on the chips -- it was love or hate, nothing in between. About 2/3 through eating after trying the politely get attention through eye contact, we resorted to calling across the restaurant where a table was being cleared off. There were a few more diners now, but it was far from full enough to put clearing tables ahead of those eating and who hadn't once been checked in on. Asked for refills and the milk that had never come. It was at least 10 minutes, maybe 15 (my husband went out to the car to get a can of coke from the cooler and had it halfway finished after giving up on his refill) before the milk and refills arrived. There was no sorry, no anything -- maybe it helps they already had the tip, I don't know. I was a server for years, I get things happen. I don't get not acknowledging it and trying to make it right. It was too bad the poor service reflects really negatively on the place because the food was exceptional. read more

We ate at this restaurant several times during our annual visit to the North Shore in September 2020. I don't know why we haven't stopped here before--our loss for sure. Every meal was wonderful. We had their Mediterranean bowl, the rueben, a hamburger, soups and the meatloaf Tuesday special. All were wonderful. They did an excellent job enforcing Covid rules to keep diners safe. Lots of room between tables, required masks, cleaning tables, sanitizer available, etc. The staff was kind and attentive. We loved everything about the restaurant and will definitely be back! We placed an order for pickup at Cascade on our way back from looking at waterfalls all the way up the North Shore. The restaurant is doing an incredible, responsible job with protecting the patrons and the employees with socially distant booths and tables, shields at the bar, and hand sanitizer galore. Now on to the regular, restaurant stuff. We ordered two Cuban sandwiches without mustard and one with just the meat. These were executed perfectly - and rank as some of the best pork products that we have had, there was no need for sauce, it was so tender and juicy on its own. We would highly recommend and hope to visit during more regular times. All in all, a great experience. read more

Honestly tried to give this place a couple times seeing as we stayed at the Lodge next door. The last time, there were only three tables occupied, but we still ended up waiting 40+ minutes for our food. My girlfriend's mimosa not she ordered was never served, even though we asked and they assured it was coming. Left after an hour. I'll drive into town next time. read more

We stopped for lunch at Cascade Restaurant. They had a great set up with lots of picnic tables located outside. The tables were spaced out with a great view of the lake. The food was delicious and the service was great. You order inside at the counter and then a server brings out your drinks and food. We split the patty melt and chicken wings. My husband and I booked the Robin's Nest cabin after a horrible couple of years of teaching. When we got to the cabin, there was a stream flowing in front of the steps creating a large patch of mud. No way to get into the cabin without sliding through it. The cabin was incredibly warm (the outdoors was about 50 degrees). The heat was turned off. Tried to open the windows which only stay open with a stick to hold them up and slam violently, so you risk breaking a hand. The bed was very uncomfortable, but since it was so hot, we couldn't sleep anyway. We informed management about the stream only to get a disinterested, "yeah, that happens every year'. The existing puddles provided a great mosquito breeding ground. Never again. read more

We went up to Lutsen a few weeks ago and stopped at the Cascade Restaurant on our drive to Grand Marais. It was the worst place I have ever stepped foot in! We walked in and I could smell a strange stench. I asked my husband if he could smell too, but he couldn't . I fluffed it off as I am pregnant and thought I was having pregnant nose. Once we were seated I could smell the dirty water on the table. (My husband could smell this) I had to use a baby wipe to clean the table before we sat down. At this point we should have left, but we didn't! I asked for a children's menu... I never got it. I went to the hostess desk and grabbed my own and tried to grab some crayons. The crayons were so slimy one stuck to my finger!!! Needless to say we didn't let our son color. We ordered the "special" tomato basil soup and BLTs. After 30 minutes and an unruly toddler we were served our soup. (not sure why it took so long for the soup. Isn't already made?) The soup was the worst thing I have ever eaten. It was literally Cambell's tomato soup mixed with a can of diced tomatoes, and curdled cream. I couldn't eat it! We decided promptly that we didn't want the sandwiches that hadn't been served to us yet. My husband went up to the hostess who defended the food and didn't apologize or anything. He was told, many people love the soup and the reason for the LONG wait was that they were short staffed. SERIOUSLY!! They charged us for our sodas and the soup that was still sitting on the table. After our unpleasant experience at Cascade we ended up grabbing lunch at Moguls in Caribou Lodge! read more

We have stayed at Cascade twice: once last summer in the lodge, and once this winter a cabin. The Lodge: are you going to receive 5-star quality rooms with fresh decor and a mint on your pillow? No. If you are going to Lutsen to sit in your room, then this isn't the place. It is quaint and the front desk folks are nice--the room is fine and the views of Lake Superior cannot be beat. Sure, the decor outdated, but I didn't have a problem with it, because I was there to explore the outdoors, and the Lodge is simply a place to sleep and freshen-up. The Cabin: a group of six of us stayed in one of their cabins--again, nothing overly fancy, but exactly what we needed for a space to hang out and crash after a day of skiing. I love how the cabins are tucked into the trail walking paths and near the river--within a minute or two you are on your way to hike into Cascade State Park. I loved having a fireplace, as well. Perfect touch on a cold winter night. And finally, the restaurant: the food is good (think diner food)--I highly recommend their burgers on the kaiser roll--a delight! However, I MUST commend them for their bar--its nothing fancy, probably 8 feet long, but it is comfortable, and they had Bell's Hopslam on tap here--no one I know has that on tap in "da Cities". Seriously, a great beer selection! Our bartender, Morgan, was really fun and added to the experience. Our customer service at this place has been top-notch. Again, if you are looking for The Four Seasons, this is not it--go to a place in Lutsen or be fancy 10 minutes north in Grand Marais. This is a site that is comfortable, cozy and relaxing, and tucked into the Cascade State Park, the views cannot be beat. read more

My plus one and I spent two nights here as part of a groupon deal and we were both genuinely happy with our overall experience. The lodge was quiet, the rooms were clean, the staff was incredibly friendly and happy to give advice on where to hike and eat, and the location is superb (easy access to hiking, lake superior, and grand marais). If you are looking for a 5-star resort with a pool, hot tub, and golf course, this is not the place for you. However, you aren't paying for that, so why would you expect that? read more

I ate a couple of times at Cascade Restaurant. The first was this Summer: me and my husband stopped there without knowing if we were going to have a late breakfast or an early lunch...well, that's what brunch stays for, right? I had a plate with eggs, sausage and ham, and a toast, while he had HUGE blueberry pancakes. Then we shared two desserts: a mixed berry pie (not bad) and a chololate cake (I loved it!!). The lady who served us was very kind, I suppose she was the manager or similar. The place was half empty and quite. We had a pretty decent brunch - not outstanding, but still pretty tasty! Then we came back this Winter for a snack after lunch (recalling the cakes...). We actually ended up with the same pie (which I just tasted, since I was still full from lunch), a hot chocolate and a Baileys Irish Coffee. The waiter this time was very slow! Ok, half place was reserved for a wedding - but it still took her a very long time to serve us, and the hot chocolate's glass was also pouring the liquid a bit from the edge, leaving dirt on the table. Also, the spoons were missing (we both had whipped cream on tops). We had to stand up and go ask for them...same thing to pay our check. At the end we discovered that our waiter was on break. ?? Still, it's a decent place to go for a quick meal. Don't forget to try a dessert! read more

We have stayed at Cascade Lodge twice. Once in a cabin and once in the "motel" unit. The positives are the location. It's awesome to leave your cabin and head right into the State Park to hike and see the beautiful falls and wildflowers. Beautiful view and rocking chairs on the front porch to really take in the view of the Lake. The view of Lake Superior is fabulous and we love crossing the street, going down the steps to the water. (It's not a beach and very rocky, but doable to carefully walk. I have included pics I took across the street from lodge) The cabins are located far enough away to feel like you're in the wilderness, but close enough to Grand Marais for awesome restaurants, coffee, gift shops, etc... Both times, rooms have been very clean and staff friendly. It snowed pretty hard and there was staff out there plowing so you could get up the hill to your cabin. Huge help! This place is dog-friendly, and that's a huge plus for my family. Restaurant food was nothing spectacular, but it's handy and they have a happy hour that runs from 3-6, $1 off beer and rail drinks & 1/2 off appetizers. Dinner entrees are just fair. Mention you're a guest at the Lodge for 20% off your bill. The negatives-The place is old and needs updating. The main lodge is old school and a place to "try" and grab some wifi (which is spotty, but they are working on that) It has couches, slipped-covered chairs, huge fireplace and grand piano. Downstairs is a cement, old basement with pool and ping pong tables, sad little sitting area to watch a pretty old tv. Ladies bathroom located down there has been remodeled. There's an ice machine and snacks in vending machine, too. Really needs better decor, mattresses (our box spring was thicker than the actual mattress! That thing was SO OLD), flat screens/better cable channels and shower drains that drain. While the shower had plenty of hot water, it didn't drain well. Overall, don't expect five-star luxury. It's old. No doubt about it. Just bear that in mind when considering this lodge. It really depends on what you are looking to do and how much you want to spend. If you're looking more to spend time in the woods XC skiing, hiking, can't get any better location. If you're looking for spa-like amenities, keep looking. This isn't it. read more

The Cascade Lodge restaurant was a classic place to visit back in the day, but the service and food quality have been poor over the past few years. The menu is fairly expensive and the wait staff seem challenged in providing great service. Today we were seated right away but waited almost 15 minutes before being greeted to place drink orders. So incredibly disappointed with the waiter and had to wait forever to take the order and food came out 40 minutes later. Order at counter but if you want to order something else (another drink, main meal after appetizer, etc) someone from your group has to go stand 20 minutes in line again to do so. My husband and I have stayed at Cascade in our favorite cabin #11 twice and have already booked it again for next year. The recently remodeled bathroom in our unit was a plus as was the new leather sleeper-sofa. We eat breakfast every day during our stay and I LOVE the Swedish pancakes. Or server (Kelly?) is always chipper too. We've also come in for happy hour (awesome specials on food and cocktails!) and we are always pleased with our servers and food. (Auna, Bayde, Bernie, Kelly, and Adam). For HH we've had the pretzel bites, steak bites and walleye fingers, all very delish and affordable! We've had several dinners, as well, that did not disappoint. We don't even bring food with us because we love this restaurant so much. Only wish is that it opened earlier and stayed open longer! read more

Great service but the food missed the mark. We had the Mcdaddy which is basically a bacon cheeseburger with a fried egg. The patty was thick and square shaped, the egg way over-cooked--nothing special and would not be ordered again. We had the walleye which lacked seasoning and tasted bland and again would not order again. Overall it wasn't bad but there are much better places to eat within the area. read more

This was an okay choice. It was cold in there, nearly every table had jackets and hats on. The beautiful fireplace sat cold. The walleye was really underwhelming.... no flavor but high $. The Mac daddy burger was good but not great. If you want a truly outstanding burger go a little further into Grand Marais and eat at Wonderbar. read more

What a fun place to grab a drink and a bite to eat! Happy hour is 3-6pm, with a few local breweries on tap and some yummy half off appetizers! I enjoyed the cheese curds and walleye fingers! The soup of the day, French onion, was pretty legit too. Perfect for a cold night. read more

I have to preface my review that I acknowledge the lodge recently underwent new ownership/management two weeks prior to our stay. I didn't expect a lot, but here is my review. I recently stayed here with a girlfriend of mine. It was cabin 4 I believe - the one connected to the left of the lodge and the view outlooked the lake. The view was good. The suite we stayed in was average. The bathroom was nice. It had a large whirlpool tub and separate shower and good supply of towels. They supplied some toiletries which was to be expected; hand soap, and shampoo and conditioner. The bed in the room was a king size bed. The bed was unfortunately severely uncomfortable. It felt like a 30 year old bed. I could feel the springs in the mattress. The fake flowers were super tacky, but I guess this is what is expected for a lodge?! The color of the room was a sea green. It didn't really go with anything. The furniture in the living room was most likely 30 years old and really filthy. I was afraid to rest my hands on the arms of the two chairs in the living room, The sofa/couch was also about 30 years old. It was clearly outdated decor. The microwave had some sort of dirt all along the side of the microwave. Having a mini fridge was nice to have and a small coffee maker as well. We had a real wood burning fireplace which I really appreciated! I don't know if the flue was stuck in a closed or half open position, but we couldn't get a fire to stay lit for longer than 5 minutes. The owner himself did come in and got a fire going for us, which was very helpful, but it died out immediately after he left. We did get a ton of rain on the 5 hour drive up, it down poured for five hours straight. That could have also been the reason we couldn't get a fire to stay lit, I'm not sure. I tried to jimmy the flue open and closed a bit, but I couldn't tell if it was open or closed. The side window of the unit was really filthy. It was a shame it wasn't as clean as the window on the front. The Cascade Lodge restaurant was mediocre. We only ate breakfast there. They had a very small breakfast menu but I assume the limited choices were due to the fact they didn't receive much business? It was okay. It wasn't horrible. The Cascade River path was very nice and picturesque. The weather was perfect and cool and crisp. The sun was finally out after an entire day and night of rain the day before. The owner was super friendly and super nice. He carried our luggage into our lodge suite next door which I haven't seen done; especially from the owner! That personal touch was really appreciated! I don't think it will stay around much as they get into owning the lodge. I only hope they replace the bed and furniture in the lodge we stayed in. If they tweak the menu a bit more, it would be an absolute 5 star place to stay! Get rid of the tacky decor and give it a fresh coat of paint and with these little tweaks they could easily get a 5 star rating from me! read more

Irish beef stew tender, rich and flavorful (Jameson whiskey contributed!). Fulton Brewery Fika coffee maple syrup stout was perfect accompaniment. read more
