Five Star has far better pizza, cheese get to hard after it cools and does not warm up good the next few hours or next day.

Our Varsity Football team's season opener was in Homer last night which is approximately an hour and change away from us. We had never been over that way and didn't know what to expect as far as the pregaming environment. I received MANY recommendations about Cascarelli's and when I yelped it I found all reviews and recommendations to be pretty consistent. Needless to say, it did not disappoint! The atmosphere inside the old brick building was absolutely perfect! The waitresses were very engaging and when we got a little rowdy with them, they didn't hesitate to give it right back to us or join the conversation (all in good fun of course). Food wise, we ordered the Annie's Bread, twice. It is delicious and I promise you've had nothing like it! It comes with ranch or a cold marinara to dip it in. We sent the cold one back and asked for some warmed up, exquisite! My feedback to the staff is that they don't serve the cold marinara and that is the ONLY thing I would change about the place. We split a large House pizza (pepperoni, sausage, and mushrooms) and found it to be incredible as well. 2 hours and no pizza and no salads. Not that busy. Moderately large party but inept and completely inattentive service. Been here many times but this was the worst experience ever. Can't imagine coming back. read more

Went to Cascarelli's about 8 years ago for dinner. It took three hours from the time we got in until we finished a mediocre pizza and left. We decided not to go back again after such a disappointing experience. Well, last week some friends and I decided to give this place another chance. Took 30 minutes to place our order, then we waited another 30 before the waitress comes out to tell us they are out of burger patties, so we changed our order to a turkey club thinking it would be faster since we were going on an hour and starting to get really hungry. Nope, it still took forever just to get a sandwich. By the time we finished and was ready to go we still waited trying to get our bill. We wound up flagging down the host as our waitress was MIA. Needless to say, we were just under three hours in getting a sandwich and fries. I was really hoping this place had changed after all these years. Apparently there isn't enough competition to give them the incentive to improve service. Fool me once as the saying goes. We won't be giving a third try. read more

Best pizza and beer on the long, lonely drive from Chicago to Detroit.

I met with six of my girlfriends for a night out on the town! We chose Cascarelli's pizza in Homer for a little fun! What a great choice! Although the menu is limited to pizza and salads, the selections in each of these categories is amazing! Six out of seven of us had salads. The Michigan Cherry salad is fantastic. Greens with fruit and a delicious blueberry dressing. The Flat Iron Steak salad is equally as good with tender beef and cheese... all I can say is yum! The salads are quite large... so come with an appetite. They are large enough to share between two and still feel as though you had a full meal. We ordered Baked bread for the table. Delicious warm chunks of bread with balsamic vinegar drizzled on it. Pesto dip and cheese dip were included on the plate. The bread was warm and really tasty. The one pizza ordered looked equally as good but alas I did not have a chance to try it! No worries though as I am definitely going back! Great fun atmosphere with a full bar and excellent service! Had the BEST time @ Cascarelli's last night. Pizza was excellent, and the salad was really good, lot's of different ingredients (peanuts, for one). The service was incredible, we were a table of 13 and she couldn't have been more attentive even though the place was packed. Special thanks for understanding our arriving late for our reservation. One of my favorite pizza stops in the area. The apps that we have tried have been so-so and slightly overpriced. A really great selection of beer to fit almost any pallette. Only one bad visit related to service, most of the time the staff is very prompt and helpful. read more

I'm sorry to say that this place has gone down hill. I've been coming here for over 16 years. On Saturday my husband and I arrived at 3:20 in the afternoon. When we went to find a table to sit at, we were met with six dirty tables. After ten minutes a waiter finally came to clear off a table. By 3:35 we had our drinks and a menu. Placed our pizza order at 3:45. Watched some Spartan football and at 4:20 one of the other servers brought our pizza to us. She had to get us plates and silverware because our waiter hadn't set us up with any. The pizza was cold...who knows how long it had sat before we received it. The crust tasted like cardboard. All in all the beer was good and the peanuts were enjoyable. We asked another waitress that had worked there for sixteen years if perhaps it was the young man's first day or week. Trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, but from her reaction it wasn't. At 4:45 when the dinner crowd started coming in, two of the original six tables that were dirty when we first came in were still dirty. I have worked in the restaurant industry for many years and I can tell you that dirty tables are a real pet peeve for me. To be greeted with nothing but dirty tables is not a welcoming sight. Not to mention that the dishwasher made at least a dozen trips back and forth from the back out to the front. Couldn't HE have cleaned the tables!? It wasn't until the later shift people came in at 4:00 that a few of the tables were cleaned. I can honestly say that it's not worth the extra miles to travel for poor service and poor food. I love that in the middle of a cornfield, this restaurant has superceded all expectations for a restaurant. The pizza is incredible with all of the ecclectic specialty pizzas you could eat here every day for weeks and not be bored. I live in a college town in Indiana and am used to finding fun and ecclectic eateries. I didn't expect a town in Homer to have something this fantastic!! read more

This is by far one of the best pizza places in the Midwest. I live in Indiana and sometimes we drive all the way to homer just for the pizza. It's that good. The service is fast and friendly. I recommend this place to anyone who eats food. Also the annies bread is a must appetizer. read more

Such a cool restaurant in such a small town. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. Take a moment to appreciate the BEAUTIFUL antique looking light fixtures all around the restaurant. The beer and wine menu is incredibly impressive. The beers on tap are almost all from Michigan, which gives this place extra credit points in my book. I love the local support! My family and I ordered the Baked Bread as an appetizer and we were floored. You get a very generous amount of oven baked bread, along with delicious homemade bar cheese and pesto. Interestingly enough, the appetizer was served with a side of Hungarian peppers, my dad absolutely loved them! We were even more impressed with our main meal. My mother ordered the Traverse Cherry Salad for her dinner and I was immediately envious. It was heaped with chicken, cherries, cheese and cashews. (Luckily, it was more than enough for my mom and she took almost half home, I stole a few bites and it was fabulous) My envy quickly faded as our waitress brought our Chicken Portobella Pizza out. Our waitress recommended that we substitute the normal red pizza sauce for olive oil, and she did not dissapoint. This pizza was SO delicious! It had a perfect balance of the portobellos, chicken, spinach and cheeses. Those moments of eating was probably the most quiet my family has ever been, as we stuffed our faces! With the great service, local brewery support and the fantastic food, my family and I will most definitely be back. read more

We've heard about this place for years. We finally went and tried the place out. We thought that we had found a nice place to eat and have a celebration occasionally. "Occasionally", because it is a 30 minute drive from where we are. Been there six times in the last year and our sixth time will be our last. My wife and I had visited the Saturday evening before Mothers Day. I always drank the Nitro Milk Stout when dining there. They didn't have it, which was a minor detail. We got a table and ordered the Baked Balls for an appetizer. We both ordered the Flat Iron Steak Salad. Ten minutes later, we were informed that they were out of steak for the Flat Iron Steak Salads. The waitress brought back the menus and we ordered a pizza. It was good, but not what we traveled there to get. After drinking a beer, I ordered a lemonade because I had to drive home. The waitress returned minutes later to tell me that the lemonade dispenser was damaged and she could not get me a lemonade. I ordered an ice water, which I received. After eating , Tammy brought me a bill for $84.00 for two beers and a pizza. When it was brought to her attention that there was a problem, she blurted out "oh I left the salads on there, didn't I" I'm glad that it was so blatantly obvious that I was being ripped off, otherwise she would have gotten a very nice and undeserved tip. This place was absolutely horrible! The pizza crust is frozen and you can definitely tell it is not fresh. For a small town pizza place I was expecting more from the food. Our server was Paige and it was the worst service I have ever had at any restaurant. Not only did she have a less than appealing personality, but all she wanted to do was chat with her friends that were there. Their conversations were not appropriate for any public place, let alone while she was working. We overheard her repeatedly bragging to her friends about how she steals alcohol while she is working. Which I would assume probably isn't the only thing she steals from them ($$$). My suggestion to this establishment would be to get rid of this server. A small town establishment like this does not need this kind of person representing them. I don't want to see a replaceable employee be the reason your establishment loses the business of my friends, family, and colleagues from the area. We enjoy the numerous beers on tap, and we only wish you were open later than 11 on the weekends so we can enjoy a late night away from the kids! read more
