In two short visits on sequential days (12pm Thursday and 9am Friday), Bill from Arlington…read moreAppliance diagnosed my dryer's broken heating element, ordered a replacement, and installed it, all for $300. I will be relying on Arlington Appliance for repairs from now on. My dryer, which is at least 9 years old, stopped blowing heat. I called Arlington Appliance and, because it was a busy time (right before Christmas), had to schedule an appointment four business days later. This seemed reasonable to me because a broken dryer isn't a crisis--you can hang-dry or go to the laundromat in the meantime. Bill and Bruce arrived within the two-hour window they'd promised. They took apart my dryer and identified the heating element as the problem. Bill thought he might have the part back at his shop, so the two of them zipped off and returned within 15 minutes. He didn't have the part, but said he could get it that same evening and return the next day to install it. He asked for a $100 deposit (check) towards a $300 total charge for parts, labor and scheduling fee (which is waived if you end up needing real work). Bill came back on time the next day and had the dryer running in no time--two days before Christmas. He even gave me some advice: let the dryer cool down 10-15 minutes between each load. The last thing I'll mention is that Arlington Appliance doesn't have a showroom. Bill told me that the manufacturers control showrooms--what's being pushed, where the merchandise is positioned--and that these demands often conflict with what the customer actually needs. I think that, because Arlington Appliance is a repair service and not a sales-driven business, you're going to get a service more interested in squeezing all you can get from your existing appliances before resorting to buying something new. This is both economical and better for the environment. While I hope that I don't have to call Arlington Appliance often, I know I'll be in good hands when I do.

My old steam boiler developed a…read morecracked heat exchanger, and Max Heating was prompt, informative, and willing to do the replacement during the New Year holiday. Dan and Sam have been stand-out with the depth of their answers to my questions. I appreciate that immensely as a demonstration of how much they care about the subject matter, and how much they care about ensuring I'm properly informed on what is happening. Sam and his crew were out all day yesterday dismantling the old boiler and installing the new one. They were friendly and engaged the whole time letting me observe the process. Sam called me over throughout to show me up close what had corroded in my old boiler, and to explain to me how it happened. He did the same during install of the new boiler to demonstrate all the critical aspects for maintenance--including letting me unscrew and rescrew a piece to practice for future cleaning. The new boiler is running smoothly right now. I feel like I understand its pieces. Sam even took an interest in diagnosing why my bathroom heating panel (which has never worked) wasn't heating. He cleaned out its vent and it has heat now. My cat is very happy to be warm right now. From the way Sam and his crew talked through all the aspects of the work they were doing, it was clear they take pride in the quality of the work. This wasn't just a job to get over and done with. And what's more, they did it for $2k cheaper than my competing quote. Max Heating and Cooling will be the first people I call for any plumbing projects I have going forward.

I was brushed off, delayed, and ignored by all EXCEPT FOR MAX! They sent out two of the techs and within a few hours had my AC running again. Their price was reasonable, the techs were super competent and nice. I highly recommend them!

I had a frozen pipe emergency during freezing weather with no heat in the house. They came out, charged me $300, and didn't even provide a proper diagnosis. I was told it "might be" a broken circulator -- no certainty, no testing, just speculation. Meanwhile, they created a dripping valve, and they didn't even bother to tighten it despite my requesr. They said they would send an estimate and never did -- not for two days -- while we were literally shivering in the cold. When I finally followed up, they sent a $2,100 estimate to replace the circulator and fix the valve. Thankfully, I decided to call another plumber. Within 20 minutes, the frozen pipe was fixed with much cheaper. I was told there was absolutely nothing wrong with the circulator or the valve. The dripping valve? Tightened in a few second. I paid $300 for guesswork, delay, and unnecessary upselling during an emergency situation. This felt like an attempt to take advantage of a homeowner in distress. I would strongly caution anyone considering this company to think twice.

We had to pay almost $2,000 to fix a tiny thing because, cunningly, they've figured out they can rake in much more money by charging separately for every "step." These "steps," mind you, used to be considered part of "doing the job," but are now billed separately by this company, which apparently has been taken over by a private equity firm, which explains it. For each "step," they shove an iPad in your face and demand your signature: Eg: --driving to your home (in this case, about 10 miles from Woburn): about $300 --diagnosing the problem: $600 --driving to get the necessary spare part (about 5 miles and back), which was so basic they should have had it on the truck: about $250 --cost of spare part: $200 --installing the spare part, which took about 30 minutes: $600 Interestingly, when we received the bill, it did NOT itemize these charges in terms of the dollar amount for each, instead it listed by units (eg "1:00 troubleshooting," "1:00 parts pickup"). We will never use this company again. Even though it was the company that installed the system, for which we paid 28K just a few years ago (no longer under their 2-year warranty). This maintenance visit showed that they're clearly more interested in making bank than actually building customer loyalty. Companies are entitled to make money. This is something else altogether. We never write reviews, but hope this one will serve as a warning to people needing HVAC services but unable to afford truly exploitative upcharging.
