Serving Portland since 1979, a casual bar and a proper restaurant rolled all into one. Right next to the Crystal Ballroom, it's a great place to go before a show. You can get a burger, a salad, or a steak, which makes it a great place for a group. They offer great seafood and pasta dishes, too! We tried a special chicken liver mousse app that was wonderful, but I would have liked to have bread not already dressed. The Piedmontese Beef Sirloin was exactly what you would hope - great dish. This place is amazing! The food and cocktails are on point. Pasta made in-house. The ravioli was delicious: large pasta pillows filled with beef in a light ragu sauce, topped with greens, lemon zest, and parmesan. Espresso martinis were also wonderful: made with actual espresso shots and not too sweet. Highly recommend this old salon style bar that is quintessentially Portland. The vibe here was so good. Our waitress listed all of the specials for that night and we ended up with amazing Mussels and Basil pesto flatbread! The flavor for these dishes were immaculate! Paired perfectly with Chardonnay! Cassidy's is practically a Portland icon. For me, you reach icon status after being in business for 50 years. Cassidy's was established in 1979, so I sure hope they stay in business at 2029 and beyond. They had a bit of unfortunate luck when they had to close for quite a while due to smoke and water damage caused by a fire on the floor above. I tried to find out what is above the restaurant but was unsuccessful. Yesterday, I met my friend Oscar their for dinner. Our server was very attentive. I have a favorite cocktail. It's kind of fancy. I didn't expect them to be able to completely imitate the cocktail but I did hope they would have some of the ingredients. My hope for them is that they offer a few sophisticated cocktails. The menu is ok. There isn't a lot to choose from but I suspect everything they prepare, they prepare with excellence. Oscar and I both chose the linguine with prawns. It was a perfect portion. They were generous with the prawns which were deveined and tail off which I really appreciated. I also noticed capers and slices of green olives sprinkled throughout. I love capers and all olives. As a final touch, chef grated pecorino romano atop the dish. Oscar and I were both in agreement that it was so good. We were both starving but we didn't wolf it down. I had to get every last caper. The flavors together were so delicious. Bummer! I wanted to really like this bar and I am sure under different times of the day it's the place to come. Just not for me. It' is located in a very old building which comes with the smell of a very old building. We just had one drink and we're hoping the place would fill up. I have lived in Portland most of my life, well... Portland adjacent. For as long as I can remember, I have meant to drop in to Cassidy's. I've heard that they had the most amazing food. And, no judgment but something right off Burnside makes me think... Bar. And Hey, that's fine... But when I originally started going to bars, you you didn't eat at a bar... unless you were already committed (aka drunk). Little corn dogs, fries, bar food... That's fine! I am not a huge drinker. And I don't usually drink and eat at the same time... I went to a show with the Crystal, like ya do... I meant to eat before the show but that just didn't happen. By the end of the show my blood sugar was waning. I was walking back to my car and thinking nothing is open... Then I saw Cassidy's sign which said that the bar and restaurant are open till midnight... First off, I needed a restroom stat. I have to say, one of the stalls in their bathroom is probably the cutest darn thing on the planet. It is tiny! I was super impressed though since I have a booty and take up space yet I slid right on in. It was amusing as hell - hence, including it in my freaking Yelp review! Alright, we've used la toilette so I parked my ass towards the windows on the street, ordered a Shirley Temple (which was cheap and delicious!) and perused the menu. I pulled the trigger on their pappardelle with sausage which has Spring peas, caramelized onions, cream and basil pesto... just the smell alone when delivered put me into a trance. But the bread also... seriously perfect. The pasta was al dente and the ingredients were so balanced... a kiss of fennel - perfection, seriously. The amazing bartender, Brian, had threatened me with an amazing dessert before I dove into my carb bowl. Because of his cautionary tale, I resisted the urge to need to call an uber to drive me to my car at the end of the block after inhaling said carb bowl. Also, making sweet sweet love to leftovers later sounded amazing. Just him slowly going over the dessert list... flourless chocolate cake... pear tartan.... and then he said crème brule followed by "orange"... SOLD and it was AMAZING. I returned to Cassidy's after more than a decade to find that nothing had changed. That was a good thing. The servers greeted me with genuine warmth, like an old friend. Smokey jazz played behind the bar. Dark wood tables and benches that had seated thousands of artists , writers and musicians of Portland past sat just where they always had. It felt like a beautiful time capsule protected from the ages. The menu was full of beautiful options, but we chose the classic Cassidy burger that I have loved since I was ten years old. Ok, this has to be some hidden gem in downtown Portland. My wife and I stayed at the Crystal Hotel for her birthday and wanted a good steak for dinner. After researching through all of the ungodly expensive steakhouses in Portland we found Cassidy's and decided to give it a shot since it was a 5 minute walk away. Walking in, the ambiance was great. The decor reminded me of a 40s or 50s era swanky restaurant with a gorgeous bar. The place is dimly lit with candles on the tables, which gave a very intimate feeling and was perfect for our date. We went on a Friday night and it was just empty. I made us reservations expecting a busy restaurant and it wasn't necessary and totally surprising with how good this meal was. Like I said, total hidden gem in downtown Portland. I'm vegan and my wife isn't so she NEVER gets a good steak anymore. She loves salad too so she ordered the Grilled Flank Steak Salad. Perfectly cooked and seasoned small piedmontese sirloin, organic greens, smoked blue cheese, pickled red onion, pear, candied hazelnuts with a blood orange truffle vinaigrette. She loved every bite! The only mistake of the evening was she asked for no blue cheese and when she got the salad it was loaded with it. We sent it back and our server replaced it ASAP. However, they sent back the same steak that she originally got instead of remaking the entire dish. A little off-putting, but the steak was so good my wife loved it even when it was cold. That series of mistakes would normally have taken away the 5th star but.....the heavens rejoiced when the chef created that Vegan Risotto! The dish is arborio with roasted turnip, parsnip, and rutabaga, caramelized pear on top, and a vegan cashew brie stirred in. I've always wanted to try risotto, but with my dietary restrictions I can't have cheese and dairy. I was super excited to see this on the menu for vegans and every bite was divine!! Creamy and cheesy, the rice was perfectly cooked and those roasted veggies were soooooooo good!!! I'll be honest, I wasn't sure what to think about the caramelized pear on top (I'm not usually a sweet dinner kind of guy) but the bite all together was complex rollercoaster of flavor that I never wanted to end. I was truly sad that the meal was gone and I couldn't have seconds! We ended the night with a creme brule dessert that the server comped us for the salad mistake. It was an orange citrus creme brule and my wife enjoyed every last bite. My only real critique and thing I felt lacking was there wasn't a dessert option for a vegan even though there is a vegan dish on the menu. I had to sit and watch my wife eat dessert while I sipped on my water. Even if it was just a light sorbet with some mint for a pallet cleanser, a vegan friendly dessert to wrap up the awesome vegan meal would be super appreciated. Our server. I feel bad because I didn't get his name but he was a trooper! He was the host, the server AND the bartender. There was some other staff for sure, but the guy working the evening shift on 12/09/22 behind the bar deserves a raise! So disappointed. I brought my daughter here because I thought everything was fabulous before covid. Unfortunately, nothing was amazing. We ordered the Brussels sprouts for the appetizer and the raviolis and steak salad. The Brussels sprouts did not have a lot of flavor. The descriptions for the raviolis sounded amazing with the ingredients of beef, ricotta and honey. I detected no ricotta or honey and all we received were 4 squares of ravioli for $26! The salad was described as having blue cheese, pears, candied hazelnuts and onions. This was a $25 salad. The steak was very small and barely any toppings. It's really too bad. read more

The space is ample and dark and was moderately empty on a Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. Service is friendly, albeit we almost asked about our order as it was taking a noticeably long time. The owner is very nice. Even though it was over cooked, the steak and mashed potatoes were right up there with the better in town. Value-wise it was a bit expensive. The tacos were a miss, they seem out of place on the menu. The chicken salad was ample and satisfactory. Lastly, cod pieces were small and just meh. This is my go to place in all of Portland for a solo dinner. The ambiance is dark and cozy, perfect for rainy days, with nice lamps for reading. I find it classy but casual. Overall, the people draw me back - the staff are so warm and welcoming! They take pride in this gem and make every effort make you feel special. This bar/restaurant reminds me of the ones you see in the older movies where the furniture and decor is more old school style with the place being semi dimly lit. It just has one of those vibes. We came after work to just hangout for a bit and some drinks. The bartender/server was very friendly and on top of getting our drinks order and making sure we were not thirsty. It's a good place for a small group of people to meet up and enjoy a beverage or two. I didn't eat any food here as had a larger lunch earlier. You won't have a wait for a table at Cassidy's on a Saturday evening, at say around seven or so. At least that was true two weekends ago. Besides our table, there was only one other customer besides us. I don't know if the 95 degree outside temperature had wilted people's appetites or if Cassidy's is more a late night-type spot. The wood-paneled walls in the restaurant had a certain whiff of old money. Service was very good until the end when we were forgotten, or so it seemed. The staff apparently had become deeply engrossed in their chit chat at the bar, and forgot there were actually customers in the restaurant. But up until that point, service was quite good. We loved the complimentary bread. It had an excellent light and feathery texture and the bread came with soft butter. That was the high point of the cuisine. I've been on a flatbread kick of late, so I ordered Cassidy's flatbread ($10). Their flatbread comes with cotija cheese (a hard white cheese from Michoacan state in Mexico), white sauce, chicken and bits of poblano chile. I requested that they leave off the arugula. Cassidy's flatbread was just fair. The flavors were okay, but the flatbread was doughy and underbaked. Along with the flatbread, I also ordered French Onion soup. It was very good with an especially delicious broth. Our friend Lindsey just wanted a burger, so that is what she ordered: the Cassidy's burger with fries ($12). I felt sorry for her though, because the Cassidy Burger was served on one of those inferior and banal Brioche buns. Poor Lindsey's Brioche bun soaked up the juices from the burger and (predictably) disintegrated into pieces. JP went with the smoked chicken hash ($11), topped with a fried egg. He thought it was okay, but wasn't wowed. While there was some hiccups with our dinner, overall, I'd still have to say Cassidy's is pretty good. read more

Great late dining spot downtown. Roasted chicken is amazing.

Came here by default because it was the only thing open late on a Wednesday night. It was a huge place and very dark inside. We sat near the bar area and ordered from their happy hour menu. The waitress took our order and later gave us our food. I ordered a jameson and ginger ale but it definitely tastes like they used ginger beer insead. I didn't drink it, it was unbearable. The bf didn't want to order a drink initially but after the waitress gave us our food, she decided to let us know then that his food would be a $1 more if he didn't want to order a drink. I'm not mad at the extra $1, I was irritated that she didn't feel the need to mention it when we first ordered. The cassidy burger was unbelievably average and dry. The mac and cheese was surprisingly decent. The grilled flatbread was really salty. The Ceasar salad could've used a little less dressing and more croutons. All in all, this place is not recommended. I'd try to go find another place that's open late maybe further in downtown. read more

Wonderful drinks, horrible food. We had the pork sho-yu and I could hardly eat it. Soft boiled egg was hard boiled and marinated in soy- so salty I could hardly eat it. Broth had no fat or oil, and was very salty, noodles over cooked, Pork over cooked. I knew getting ramen from a non Asian restaurant was risky but this was hardly edible to me and it was $18. Had a few cocktails off the menu and those were great. Bar tender was very kind and accommodating. There were a few "regulars" there that got pissy with us over sitting in "their" seats and I honestly couldn't believe how salty this old man got just by us sitting down in his section so he wasn't able to easily see a game on the tv. I couldn't be more pleased with the way they taste. 5/5 Roasted Baby Carrot Sweet glazed nuts pared with a whipped ricotta sauce with a bite of a carrot, blew me away. The flavors play off each other beautifully. I never thought a carrot dish would have me wanting to come back for more. 4/5 Mary's Organic Chicken Chicken is extremely flavorful, juicy topped a thin crispy skin. Crispy onions, blanched beans and mashed potatoes made the dish too hard to finish in a good way of course. 4/5 Pappardelle Noodles are thick and cooked perfectly the meat, tender and flavorful. I would order again. Friendly server 3/5 Crème Brûlée The sugar on tops was too think the custard was cold. The sugar didn't stick to my teeth so I gave it a 3/5. 3/5 Tiramisu For a tiramisu love its was okay. For someone who's doesn't like coffee it taste pretty good. We had a long wait for the whiskey library so we stopped here for some late night happy hour on a Saturday night before the next bar. It definitely has an older crowd feeling to it. We are in our mid 30's and for sure we're bringing the average age down. We ordered off the HH menu. The calamari was well seasoned but could have been in the fryer a minute or two longer. We also ordered the grilled cheese and red pepper tomato soup. That was a wonderful addition to soak up the drinks. Service was quick and prompt but this place is pretty basic nothing special here. read more
