Excellent stop half way between Jacksonville and New Orleans. Not much besides fast food on this stretch of I 10 so we're thrilled to get a home cooked meal. Shrimp and catfish to die for. A little hard to find--small sign behind am old Exxon station--but worth the search. Fast friendly service and reasonable, too. read more

If this is the Castaway Seafood restaurant......They do not take responsibility when their food isn't prepared correctly. I ordered the big steamer, took a bite of the garlic bread and tried a shrimp that was terribly tough. Before sending it back I tried a second shrimp to be sure it was not just one tough shrimp in the bunch. They were both equally tough so I immediately sent it back and ordered something else. I left the shrimp tails on the plate so they could see what I tried and the plate was at the table a very short time, not long enough for me to eat much. At checkout they charged us $11 for a shrimp appetizer that we did not order because I ate 2 shrimp from the steamer I sent back. The cashiers excuse was that they never had a problem the the big steamer before. I'm sorry, but if it had been worth eating, I would have happily ate it. A restaurant should take responsibility for when food is over cooked or incorrectly prepared as it is bound to occasionally happen and it certainly is NOT the customers responsibility. Unfortunately my husband had already paid for it when I noticed and the cashier refused to correct it. In the end we were charged $11 appetizer price for 2 supremely tough shrimp and a bite of garlic bread. According to this restaurant it's ok to blame a customer for their bad cooking and then steal their money for things they didn't order or eat. When I said I'd leave it in a review, the cashier shrugged and informed me that it'd only be one bad one out of thousands. That was beyond inappropriate and unprofessional. read more

Stopped here while driving along I-10. The fried shrimp were huge and the batter was great. The batter (I think different) on the chicken was really good too! Staff was nice, it smelled nice in the dining area (scented candle burning) and the bathroom was very clean. Portions are big and priced very fair. I saw someone get the baked oysters with cheese, bacon, and jalapeños and they looked and smelled really good. There was someone shucking oysters the whole time we were there. We ate until we were full and had some togo. I would recommend Cataways because everything was good, down south cooking, nothing was bad, and also because the other choices around seem less than ideal. read more

OK, 5 stars might be too many, but I'm giving them because they serve the best fried shrimp I've ever put in my mouth. They also get 5 stars for fresh, fresh shucked oysters on the half shell. If you like southern fried seafood, you'll love this place. They do offer grilled seafood, but I didn't try it. Better than average sides too, but I choked on the hush puppies, literally. Next time, I'll get the garlic bread instead. Very friendly atmosphere with a flat screen TV over the bar.It's right off 1-10, closer than McDonalds and they have a large selection of poboys. This is a must stop and eat place I ordered a dozen fried shrimp have been a feast. It came with 2 sides and hushpuppies (or garlic toast). The salad was crisp and fresh with a good number of non-lettuce ingredients--all fresh and tasty. fresh made desserts strawberries and pound cake and whipped topping. So good.. I will start by saying the service was excellent and the location very convenient to our hotel. Quick access off of 10. However, the food did not live up to the reviews I read, which fellow yelpers are not usually guilty of that often. The seafood was fresh, I will give them that. But fried shrimp was overly bready for my taste. Coleslaw was chopped into micro pieces and not that flavorful. My husbands French fries were over cooked. The hush puppies were bland. Maybe we came on an off day, but I would not go out of the way to go back. read more

I do not normally write bad reviews, however, this has to be shared. We stopped for lunch on Saturday, 11/9/2019 after a tandem jump at Skydive Panama City. When I opened the bottle of cocktail sauce for my shrimp, approximately 2 dozen roaches came out of the bottle. Some were very tiny and some were full grown, probably trapped a couple inside and they multiplied. They ran out of the bottle and all over the table, my food and me! I have never experienced anything like that in my life. The waitresses were very nice, but in disbelief stating that perhaps the roaches came in from the windows and claiming that they sanitize the bottles every night. This is unacceptable and I am sure is a reflection of their cleanliness and sanitary practices as a service establishment. read more

Should be called Stayaways Friday 9/6/19 Arrived at 5:40 pm were seated at 6pm, at a crowded table smaller than my end tables, wedged in the back. Very uncomfortable since I am handicapped. I ask if we could be moved after the 5th person squeezed by with their behind sliding across the edge of our table. Waitress said simple "NO". One waitress with a large backside almost knocked everything off of our table in squeezing past. We ordered without delay, drinks served in styrofoam cups. We ordered what they call the "trash boat" platter and the name is appropriate, since that is where it belonged. Food arrived 35 minutes later, cole slaw was the warmest thing on the plate. Fries were cold, two very small fried oysters, way over cooked, mostly batter, could not be eaten. Hush-puppies over cooked and hard. Could not eat the stuffed crab, every bite was full of shell. We had ordered onion rings, they arrived after we were finished with everything else, and only after I flagged someone down and ask. The original waitress ask if we wanted tarter sauce,but we never got it. The service is awful, we never saw our waitress again, no one bothered to ask if everything was ok, or if we needed anything else. When I went to pay, with credit card in hand, the cashier never said she was sorry, nor did she offer a discount or solution, she said all of our food is fresh to order. So why was our food cold? Was it raked off of plates that others did not finish? You can only wonder. She was not interested at all in the issues with our meal. She wasted no time in grabbing my credit card and charging the full amount. Next time I decide to throw $24 away, I will feed it to my trash disposal. Very rude people. Overpriced for the quality and service. Waffle House across the street has way better service. The locals flock to this place - mainly because other than fast food, there is no place else to go. The seafood is not fresh, I was told by an employee that they receive most of it frozen or already prepared. Pho Noodle just up the street is changing to a seafood and more restaurant. Driving through Bonifay, FL on a family road trip, we almost stopped at Subway for lunch, but saw the reviews for Castaway and gave it a try, we're glad we did. The Boat Trash meal was great, my wife thoroughly enjoyed her fried jumbo shrimp and our children got kids meals (shrimp & chicken tenders). Service was great- friendly, fast and accurate. Stopped in while driving home from FL. It is right off the interstate. It has little to no signage, a nondescript building in the back of a parking lot behind a closed Shell station. Food was great. Great food. Awesome people. Our waitress was a sweet lady. Explain everything to us and helped us ordered. I had the two piece fried fish and my husband had the cat fish and my daughter had stuffed crab. Mine fantastic and so was my husband's. The stuffed crab wasn't the best but wasn't bad either. Even my 7 year old ate fish.. I know a miracle but she loved it. The fries and baked beans were good too. Clean restrooms and fast service. By the time we left there was a line to get in. Place is right off I10 on the left behind gas station. Their sign needs to be re painted urgently .We passed it twice but was worth finding it. read more

I went to castaways with my mother she ordered shrimp and when she was eating them she found a roach in them. Disgusting! Another thing that got me was that they hiked up the price on the wings from 9 dollars to 11 because " they are bigger now", well i can say for sure that these are tiniest wings iv had from anywhere. We were traveling on I10, pulled off for gas, and found Castaway next to Exxon. I wasn't expecting much but stayed to try the fresh oysters and shrimp. We were told that the oysters were caught that morning, so we had them raw and preferred them without any sauce. We also had fried shrimp, which was better than average, but I would have preferred them without breading. The service was fast and friendly, and the clientele seemed like locals who knew each other. 4 stars instead of 5 just because the rest of the meal didn't stand out like the seafood. It's a great option over fast food for while you're on a road trip. I look forward to stopping in next time I'm in Florida. read more

I have eaten at some of the best...and worst...seafood restaurants in the Florida Panhandle, and by far, Castaways has the absolute best seafood in the area. Shrimp are fresh, cleaned, prepared and battered there at the restaurant, the mullet are so fresh, they are literally flipping their tails on the way to the table....the sides are all fresh and well prepared and the staff are friendly, courteous and there to serve you. Jeff, whose family owns Castaways, stopped to help us. He invited us to park our camper behind the restaurant while my husband drove to get new tires. My girls and I were invited to wait in the air-conditioned restaurant while we waited. They were busy! We are going to see my family in Ft. Lauderdale and stopped in Bonifay for the night. We decided to try the Castaway Restaurant and we were so happy we did. What a great place and it appears to be a local favorite. I had the Boat Trash which came with fried shrimp, oysters, fish and stuffed crab with hush puppies and I had onion rings and slaw. My wife had shrimp salad. The fried shrimp and onion rings were over the top. We are going to make this place a regular whenever we drive to Florida. By the way the fried fish was so light I thought it was going to float out of my hand!!! read more
