    Pandan with coconut
    Marlene Y.

Fairly new ice cream location at the corner of King Street and McCully. Nice big seating area, a piano (a sign says that you must know how to play though) and cute retro styling to boot. The ice cream is homemade and very creamy. We ordered pandan with coconut and ube flavor combination in a cup. We also tried the lychee with mochi bits. The pandan with coconut had an incredible flavor! Of course, we'd need to try the many other flavors but we'll save that for another time. Parking is very limited as it is for most businesses in the area. Service was topnotch!

Great service, the workers were helpful and nice. The shop was clean and there were lots of seating. They offered games to play, there was a piano, and claw machines. There were many flavors of ice cream to choose from and you can sample the flavors. I didn't particularly care for the ice cream after trying some flavors. I just settled on a flavor. The person I was with liked the ice cream. Just a matter of preference. Street parking. Shop is located at the corner across Moiliili Park and First Hawaii Bank.

Came in on a weeknight and the place was packed! I love that there's a lot of seating though to enjoy your treats. Tons of flavors, although about 4-5 were sold out for the day already. I'd say they have about 2 dozen or more? There was just ONE guy working that night and he killed it, excellent service. Just felt bad for him that he was manning the whole store himself. Ended up with an ice cream sandwich - mac nut cookies (great) and dark chocolate ice cream. Well, I asked for dark chocolate, but pretty very sure I got the ghiradelli chocolate instead? Which unfortunately is not what I wanted. It was too sweet for me. But the service was still great and gotta cut him some slack. The ice cream was tasty, but a lot airier than I expected it. Not very dense if that's your thing. But I'd still go back and try something else.

Stop by during our morning walk. Greeted by a very friendly gentleman whom was the owner, let us taste some flavors. I decided on the pandas coconut and strawberry delight while my friend had vanilla and ube. We sat down and enjoyed, both were satisfying and delicious. Ambiance was very pleasant. Nice to have such a nice ice cream shop in the neighborhood. Come in and support this local neighborhood business, a great place and we will be back to try more flavors.

If you're craving ice cream, this is the spot to go to. They have a bunch of different flavors that you can sample before choosing. The ice cream itself has a really good, consistent flavor and even has a bit of stretch to it. They also give you a really big scoop for the price, which makes it totally worth it--especially on a hot day. Great and friendly service

My second visit to Castaways and I was impressed. I spoke with one of the owners and he maintained that they use all natural ingredients - no dyes or preservatives. Ube Coconut was a vibrant purple and vibing with flavor. So was the Holiday Pumpkin Pie...very festive. But both...weren't too sweet. Hours are now 200p till 1000p weekdays though on Fridays, they close at midnight. Weekends they open at 12 noon; closing at 1000p on Sundays and midnights on Saturdays.

Had a great experience at Castaway Ice Cream! The customer service is always fantastic from the moment we walked in. Jordan was especially helpful, friendly, and made the whole experience even better with great recommendations and a welcoming attitude. You can tell this local family-owned business truly cares about their customers and the quality of what they serve. Their ice cream is homemade and absolutely delicious, you can really taste the freshness in every flavor. Definitely a spot worth visiting in Honolulu!

Small ice cream. Waffle extra. I only ate half. Too sticky (stabilizers) for my liking.
    Andrea A.

I was excited for the arrival of this ice cream shop, as I truly love and prioritize the homemade stuff. For me, it wasn't a win though. Service was nice and the shop is cute. I appreciate that they aren't packing it full of dyes and the serving sizes are generous. The flavors were all pretty subtle though - you had to concentrate to find the chocolate in the chocolate. But my primary issue is I just don't like sticky ice cream. I know this is from using a too high ratio of stabilizers and I imagine it's hard to keep temperatures cold in Hawai'i, but that chewiness just ruins it for me. Between our party, we tried chocolate, vanilla, coffee, salted caramel, almond joy, pineapple, rocky road, and mint chocolate. And none really wowed me. I ordered a small split of the coffee and almond joy as the best of the tastes, but ended up throwing half out. If they tweaked the recipe and pulled back the stabilizers while upping the flavors, I'd give it another go, but otherwise Wings is still my go to for ice cream on Oahu.

PARKING: Street options, Isenberg is probably the best to search on. SERVICE: 10/10, they encourage sampling, and are so proud of their homemade products AMBIANCE: very casual, good for catching up, a casual date (they have board games) FLAVORS: they rotate frequently, so check them out for their latest creations

Matcha Ice Cream + Lychee Mochi Ice Cream
    Rene D.

Lychee. mochi. Ice cream. Are you kidding me??? That's so perfect. The mochi was not hard at all (literally as fresh as can be like you get from the store) and the lychee flavor was delicate and just a bit tart. The matcha ice cream was delicious as well, a great contrast to the fruity lychee. Definitely an earthy, strong flavor. Employees were friendly and provided samples when I couldn't pick between a couple flavors. Parking might be difficult but you can always just go to longs, get a snack there, then go grab some ice cream afterwards (lmk if that isn't allowed). I love this place and I hope you do too!

Happy National Ice Cream Month/Day! Conversation with my son while I drove past Castaways Ice Cream and he mentioned that I would love it there for pandan ice cream, wow.-my son knows me well, haha. I finally had a chance to check out Castaways Ice Cream on a Friyay, date night with my other half. It is so close by for me, that we could even walk it during our future date nights. Parking would be the junk part here but there are lots of street parking available . It was a busy Friday night, non-stop customers which is a great thing, I met owner, Robert/ Dr. Robert, he was very friendly and I got to chat with him a bit but couldn't hear about the meaning behind his business name "Castaways", which I thought was a franchise but not, he is a also a Physician and moved here from Texas with his family. Castaways Ice Cream is made in Hawaii specializes in premium ice cream made fresh in shop and they prioritize in quality over quantity. Observing the decor at Castaway, I like how they have the # of followers they have on social media, ( Facebook & Instagram) displayed near the entrance, the piano which has a note to respect it and only play if you truly know how to play the piano, I want to test my big kids' piano skills, one day to see if they still remembered from taking piano lessons. ( I can't wait to visit for my son/daughter to go on the piano, hehe) & now back to the ice cream, I sampled a few flavors and sad news that pandan wasn't available, more reason to visit! It was hard to decide what flavors to select, but finally ended up with scoop of banana oreo (unique flavor) and coffee & a waffle cone. The verdict: nice and creamy but it was a little on the sweeter side. I hope in the future they will have water cups/provided, although bottled water is for sale. The waffle cone was fresh not stale, I enjoyed it breaking up the pieces and eating with the ice cream. Note, this place does get loud from all the noise coming from everyone talking and enjoying their ice cream. Great addition & spot to the Moilili neighborhood, congrats and welcome Castaways Ice Cream, support local and come by for a scoop, or 2 or 3!! I can't wait to try pandan and other flavors!

Another great experience at Castaways! I genuinely love their ice creams so much -- so creamy and rich. The service provided is also always excellent. I feel comfortable asking to sample different flavors and the girls are always so friendly and nice! They deserve good tips! This will be my go-to ice cream place. I'm willing to go out of my way to come here every time I'm craving ice cream :)

I work in an office with many foodies where we share our experiences. One of the girls keeps on hounding my to try Castaways Ice Cream (CIC) which opened a few months ago. They had their grand opening on March 22, 2025. Located on the corner of S King St and Isenberg, CIC boasts locally made ice cream. My colleague just raves over the Pandan ice cream. This had me look them up on Yelp where a handful of friends came here and rated them high. I just had to investigate. I scrolled through their photos on Yelp and my eyes stopped on Rum and Raisin. Impressed with what I saw, I decided to make my way here on the 4th of July shortly before 7pm. It was a quiet day evidenced with lots of street parking. CIC, which I found spacious, bright and welcoming, had 2 customers who were just about leaving with their carryout when we arrived. We were greeted by a friendly male staff and I immediately looked at their offerings and noticed several empty spaces. I was looking for rum and raisin, which I saw on the Yelp photo gallery, and Pandan, as recommended my colleague but couldn't see either so I asked the staff. Unfortunately these 2 flavors weren't available and was advised their flavors rotate every 2 weeks. I then looked for flavors that I enjoy but couldn't find mint chocolate chip nor cherry. I had a difficult time trying to decide and the staff offered samples. I tried the lychee with mochi that was just okay and couldn't see myself enjoying a full scoop. I then asked for matcha and this was better. My buddy was waiting for me and didn't want to hold him back longer so I took the plunge and just settled for chocolate chip without sampling it. After paying, we took our cups to a small table, snapped some photos and it was time to dig in. THE VERDICT: I found the ice cream to be very rich and creamy. The matcha was delicious but could have used more of the matcha flavor. Chocolate chip was super creamy but flavor was just okay. I appreciated both ice creams didn't melt quickly. While waiting for my buddy to pay, I took a sample of the waffle cone and sadly it was stale. I noticed they also have prepackaged waffle cone bites and sprinkles for sale by the register. Customer service was probably the best thing of my first visit. The male staff was friendly and patient. Perhaps we were the only customers? As we ate halfway through, more customers walked in. When we left, more people walked in and this time noticed another staff behind the counter assisting customers. Impressive with the foot traffic here. Overall, a somewhat average experience for me where I'd be game for another visit to sample other flavors. I really want to try their rum raisin or the Pandan. 2025 #35

Once they scoop your ice cream, they have a little station where they scrape the peanut drizzle from a big block directly onto your ice cream. Fun to watch! I got the crepe and chose 2 ice cream flavors: blueberry cheesecake and chocolate. My mom got the cup with matcha ice cream. I really enjoyed the crepe! The peanut drizzle was nicely spread throughout the crepe and added a nice touch to the ice cream. The cup wasn't as good in my opinion though because the peanut drizzle was only sprinkled on top and not as generously spread. I would come again, but I would only recommend ordering the crepe option.

However, there are many alternative malasada purveyors throughout Honolulu, so I depended on local vloggers to find the best ones. This one popped up often on YouTube, and as luck would have it, we were dining at The Pig & The Lady on the next block. How calorifically convenient. We took the opportunity to stop by for a pre-dinner snack since they closed at 6PM. It's a cute shop with multiple sweets including quite a selection of housemade ice cream and delectable mouthfuls called Cake Bombs (Photo 10). We decided we would be good and ordered one unfilled Malasada each. Dusted with various sugar flavors, they were just $2.65 a piece. Meh: The $14 (including 15% tip) dessert tasted too light and ice-like and appeared more translucent (rather than opaque white) than expected, leading me to think the milk was watered down, which may be how the establishment can make up the cost for the portion size while maintaining a spot in Ala Moana, especially given milk prices in Hawai'i, even if you're buying from Costco or direct from farmers. Also, tables were not cleaned after each party departed; that transparent puddle on your table might not be condensation and may instead be drool drops from the toddler who sat there before you. Overall: Good (not outstanding) experience. Knocked off 2 stars for combination of suspected diluted milk + unclean tables.

Every morning, without fail, people gathered outside waiting patiently for pastries. No flashy signs. No gimmicks. Just quiet consistency. That alone intrigued me. By the second day, my mind was made up. I'm an early riser, so the plan was simple: go on my usual morning run and arrive before the rush. Japanese culture and craftsmanship have long fascinated me. Through close friends with family roots tracing back to Japan, I've developed a deep appreciation for the culture -- the discipline, the rituals, the precision, and the respect for process. There's a beauty in the intentional pace at which things are done. Nothing rushed. Nothing careless. This bakery embodied that philosophy perfectly. The space itself was small, modest, and aromatic. No overdesigned interiors. No influencer bait. Just the comforting smell of fresh bread and butter hanging in the air. Some bakeries hide behind elaborate architecture and presentation, but this place understood something more important: when the product is exceptional, the product becomes the attraction. The pastries ranged from playful and charming to elegant and refined. The Salt & Butter bread was an instant staple -- savory, warm, and impossibly light. The dough practically dissolved like air. Thankfully, nothing felt overly heavy, because I completely lost control of my ordering strategy. The Kobo Kuma -- a soft bear-shaped bun filled with homemade vanilla bean custard -- was perfection. Equal parts cute and comforting. The Cinnamon Roll was solid, but the Haupia pastry completely stole the show. For those unfamiliar, Haupia is a traditional Hawaiian coconut pudding found throughout Polynesia. The flavor here was subtle yet lingering, delicate without disappearing. The kind of flavor that quietly stays with you long after the last bite. Then came the Blueberry Danish -- beautiful, buttery, and perfectly sweet. I didn't even make it to the savory options this time, which honestly just gives me another reason to return. And I absolutely will -- whether back here in Hawaii or perhaps at one of their mainland locations in Los Angeles. Some places become popular because of hype. Others because of quality. This bakery earned its line.

You can find this mochi around the island at different supermarkets but it's best from the source on University Ave. You can't miss out on their peanut butter stuffed mochi. It's just such a classic. I also love their strawberry stuffed mochi- so ono!

A mango dessert I've been eyeing, that definitely was worth trying!" SERVICE: fully staffed INTERIOR: small, tight fit, grab n' go shop EXTERIOR: next to Betty's Burgers WAIT TIME: none, walked in n' had what I came for, which was the mango mochi PARKING: free lot in walking distance OVERALL COMMENTS: the Dango Mochi looks just like the emoji. It was chewy in texture with a rice flavor. The Mitarashi Dango was indeed savory with the soy sauce glaze, not my cup of tea but if that's your jam, yay. My kids picked out the strawberry items that they enjoyed eating. I was surprised to see that there was a lot of mango mochi available, so that was nice. First impression, it was huge. After cutting into it you can see the ripeness in the vibrant color of the mango. It was juicy, sweet n' with the mochi balanced out really well. The only thing that held it back from being at its best was the mango was a bit fibrous. Other than that I'm happy I finally got the chance to try it!
