Had never been a great hitter at all, don't play baseball, never have but now with a softball rec league I need the reps and it so much fun when you actually get to hit the ball! If you're someone who would rather throw the football with friends instead of doing keg stands, or you enjoy a nice bike ride instead of sitting inside and watching p0rnos (not hating on pornos, guys, just saying the outdoors is great every now and again), Castle Batting Cages can be as equally great of a find for you as it was for me. Because I hate Baseball Central on La Cienega (mostly because some of the employees are dicks), I went out in search of a new batting cage that wasn't called Baseball Central, even if it was further away. The answer in this search was Castle Batting Cages, which is right where the 101 and 405 meet. It actually is not nearly as far as it sounds for people living on the Westside, just go around 7:30P or so after the traffic has died down. Other than the name, I wanted a place that was outside (I hate hitting in a playpen) and a place where I could actually see how far I was hitting the ball to a point - again, Castle Batting Cages was the answer. I'm not a serious baseball player. In fact, I've never actually played a game of fast pitch baseball in my life. I never made it past tee ball, but I can make solid contact playing company softball. That's what I really like about this place, there are so many different speed options and you don't feel intimidated going into one of the slower cages to practice, despite the fact that they go up to 80MPH and some of the guys there are really good. If my memory is correct, it goes: High Arc Softball Low Arc Softball (25MPH) 40 MPH Baseball 50 MPH Baseball 60 MPH Softball 60 MPH Baseball 70 MPH Baseball 80 MPH Baseball Sometimes, there's a little bit of a wait at the faster cages for the more serious players who are practicing, but you'll rarely have a problem getting a spot at anything under 60 MPH. The machine is far enough away that it gives you a lot of time to react and you can even adjust the height of the pitches. The overall space is pretty big, so if you really crank one, you can tell that it went "over the house" and hit the back wall, making you feel like the frontal crotch area of your pants is entirely too small to handle all your manliness. And you can work on pulling the ball or going opposite field and you can actually see if you're doing it. I'm slowly working my way up and can hit in the 50 MPH cage now, which is great to have the option to slowly progress like that. Yes, it's a batting cage so some of the bats are "dead" and you'll scream in pain if you hit it in the wrong spot, but you can't expect them to maintain the business if they have to get new bats all the time. If you know you'll be back, I'd definitely recommend getting one of the packages, I paid $55 for something like $75 worth of cage time and I think that's much more reasonable than the $3 for 30 pitches (that isn't bad either though). I sit in an office all day and this is my release on the weekends when Yoga isn't enough. And juuuuuuuust in case something ghetto happens, there are always cops there at night who I think are strapped. However, I wouldn't want to see what a bat fight looks like even though we're all wearing helmets - it'd be like something straight out of Warriorz. CAN. YOU. DIG. ITTTTTTTTTTT?!?! read more

After 50 pitches my arms, chest and upper back feel more toned and defined. It's $3.50 for 25 pitches for baseball or softball. You have to submit two I.D.'s in exchange for the equipment. Most of the batting cages are baseball and they range in speed. The last two on the far right are high arc soft-ball. I usually do baseball at 40mph. But I just tried the soft ball and it didn't make my body so sore afterwards and it gives you more time for your hands and eyes to coordinate. So it's up to your preference. You CANNOT where open toed shoes in the batting cages for your protection. Trust... these balls can end up any where. This is a cheap bout of fun but it also goes oooh sooo quickly too. read more

There are a ton a different pitching speed options, from Softball to Hard Pitch. I'm not a huge fan of the texture of the balls that are pitched, but overall the cages are legit. They haven't upgraded the cages in about 3 decades, but there's not a whole lot that needs improving. read more

I went here for miniature golf not the batting cages. I found the golf course to be pretty worn out and basic. Place needs quite a bit of work to bring it up to the standard it should be. Course is worn, lots of items need repair or replacement. But still a fun experience overall. I would still recommend going here, just dont expect anything amazing. I didn't have to wait too long to use the cages which was a plus and the employees were helpful and nice which was also a plus. Since don't have batting cages in Sweden we had to try it out. Got excellent service by John and hit some balls in the slower cages. You buy tokens and get 25 pitches per token. You can choose speeds from 40 to 80 mph. Mind you that a professional pitches throws the ball near 100 in the MBL. You should wear gloves if you can or you might get blisters from the friction of the bat. You will be very warm too so don't do it when the temperature goes up to 90. read more

First time here at the batting cages and had a very bad experience. Came here with my son to get him a couple of swings, the cashier saw my son who had his helmet and gloves and did not question his age at any moment. I went ahead and made my purchase of $38 worth of tokens. When I asked the cashier for a bat he then question his age and this was all after I had made my purchase. He then stated that he was not allowed to go in the cages due to his age he needed to be eight years or older. But what bothers me the most was the fact that he saw him with his equipment and didn't say anything until after I made a purchase. I asked him for a refund and he stated there is no refunds at all then I asked him to speak to a supervisor or manager on duty and he stated no one was available and that they are actually never there. If this is how they treat their customers by making them pay first and then explaining the rules and not giving them a refund I am definitely not returning ever again here. Last night was the first time I've ever been to a batting cage. I've seen them plenty, but never actually tried it myself. $3 for 30 pitches...? That's a pretty good deal. You have the option of hitting soft balls or baseballs. I have to say, "holy crappola, hitting those huge soft balls hurts the crap out of my hands!!!" Don't get me wrong, I had a blast, but from ball 25 to 30 I was afraid to hit them because my hands were screaming "pls stop" =) I had great company and it was fun watching the boys, but next time ill probably try baseballs instead. You get to choose what speed you want the balls flying at you. Make sure you stay in your box unless you want to lose a tooth or an eye ball, or hell, your whole head if you get hit by that 80mph ball! I did see a guy hit ever ball at 80mph though. You have pitches being thrown at you from league requirement distance. You also have the fact that a single token gets you 30 balls.. 30 CHANCES TO MAKE THAT GAME WINNING HOME RUN!!! What a bargain! I know the last time I ended up with a date ending with balls being thrown at my face, it ended really well! Wait.. that sounds so wrong. Then if you're not up for the task of hitting those fast balls, you can always shoot for the slower moving balls. The batting cages really give you a lot of options as to what your skill level is like. Parking could be a little bit of a trick. The parking lot is shared by the mini golf that seems to be run down but very appealing to a lot of people. So after your make it out of your car in the tight parking spots and you drop your bat on your leg as you head to the cages, you'll be limping just like Kirk Gibson! All you need is Vin Scully doing play by play announcing from the side lines and you got yourself a good night at the batting cages. This place is the spot. It's always nice to hit the ball out of the... well.. in the fence. It'll take you back to when you were little at your small time baseball games.. or put you in those fantasies where you actually did make that MLB team and did hit a potential of 30 game winning home runs for a small price. I love this place and come almost weekly. It is $3 for 25 pitches, but on Monday nights they have a special where it is $3 for $50 pitches, which is really good because it does all add up. They have numerous different cages, a few with different speeds of baseball and 2 for softball. There is only one cage for each type of pitch, but there is never a huge wait. People are nice and rotate between rounds. They supply a bat and helmet if you give an ID and will take credit card for $12 or more. There is ample parking, plus a mini golf course and arcade room. The toughest part is finding this place your first few times there. They really need a light on their sign, because I keep driving right past their entrance! 30 balls is $3, can borrow several types of bats and helmets by just giving them your drivers license. I usually use this place as BP for my slow pitch softball league so I'm happy that they have 3 cages that give you slow pitch high-arc softball pitches. I've found that the cages closer to the rental booth can sometimes reload slower and you end up standing there for 20 seconds or more while the hopper tries to pull softballs to that feeder, where as pitches normally come out every 10 seconds. Other than that, the pitches are consistent, with slight variation being inside or outside rather than shallow or deep. Not going to lie, this was so much fun! I can't remember the last time I went to the batting cages, but it definitely felt like the first time! If you don't have your own equipment, you just need to leave an ID to rent theirs for free. Each token costs $4, and shoots out 28 balls. You have the choice of baseball (shooting straight at you at 40mph), or a high curved softball. It goes by super quick so be ready to buy more than 1 token. But also be warned that if you're not used to hitting softballs or baseballs, there is no option at the speed it shoots out from, or any other option besides "baseball" or "softball" for that matter, you might feel quite uncomfortable in your wrist, arms, or fingers depending on how you hold your bat, and how it makes contact with the ball. (Or don't even listen to me because I don't a thing about batting, haha!) A cute place to take a date because it's cheap, fun, and you can control how much time you want to stay there. Also, if you're over the batting cages, it's basically in Castle Park, so you can move to mini golf, or their small arcade, both in the castle. Cute!! read more

I have been here before to play mini golf before and never encountered the problems i did yesterday. I pulled into the parking lot and parked. I couldn't have been there for more then 5 mins when a security guard told me i could not sit in the car with my friend. We were waiting on a group of people to come meet us up to do the batting cages. He knocked on the door and asked if we were going to go inside and we told him yes that we were just waiting for our group to come. He then told us we could not sit in the car and to get out of the car and sit on the benches by the batting cages and wait for them there. I thought this was stupid and said no, ill wait here, thanks. He continued to stand right next to my car and waited for at least 2 mins. I then asked, can i help you? he said ya you need to get out of the car and sit over there. Lets just say I called my group of 10 and we went somewhere else. I will never go here again and i do not recommend this place to anyone. If you want to be hassled come here. Kids, if you see a security guy who looks Asian and has a mustache like a gay pirate, kick him in the balls for me. No more then 10 mins after this posting up above, i recieved this message. "I havent been there in at least 15 years...but that location has had a lot of gang and drug problems, and a couple shootings. I wouldnt be surprised if they dont have people sit in the cars and do drugs.....or even have sex since there are prostitutes that work further up Sepulveda Blvd." Geeze this place sounds amazing to take you kids to. It's the Castle Batting Cages... Everyone that actually plays knows the place besides The Batcade in Burbank and Baseball Central in Central LA. I like how there's no nonsense because the cages are all by themselves outside, away from the mini golf area, and away from the arcade. You buy your tokens at the little stand ($3 for 30 pitches), grab a bat if you need one, a smelly helmet, (They hold your ID for borrowed equipment) and get in a cage. I like the simplicity. As a baseball player, I appreciate the 80mph cage, but the only thing that irks or bothers me may be a technicality, and I guess bother only a few people. What I don't like about these style of cages that Castle has are that they're the ones that shoot from a very noticeable downward slope. All cages have a downward slope, but let's just say because of the 60ft distance, it's a little more noticeable when the ball shoots upward at you. Another thing is, you don't get to see the ball drop into the machine right when it's about to pitch it. I found this a little annoying in the 80mph cage. I found it a little hard to get the timing right when I can't see the ball drop in to be pitched. It just shoots, and my bat speed isn't at its tip-top shape you know what I mean? A lot of late swings and loopy right field hits were the result, and I'm a righty. Maybe I'm being a little overly judgemental on the technical aspects of the machines, but they do affect the enjoyability. Otherwise, this place is very popular and can get crowded during peak hours. During the summer, they're open until midnight. I like to go around 11-11:30pm so I don't have to wait to use a cage. Overall these are great "Swing away" cages for beginners and experienced hitters alike. read more

My friend took me here spontaneously because I've never gone to a batting cage before... and I am now completely addicted to it! This place was $3.50 for 25 pitches. You can exchange your ID for a helmet and a baseball bat for free. They have different batting cages, I believe the speeds ranged between 40-90. So each batting cage are set at a specific speed. There were also different cages for softball and baseball. I also noticed that you can adjust the height of the pitches on the machine where you input the token. You also have to take turns to use the cage, but I didn't have to wait any more than one or two people in front, which was approximately about 3-4 minutes per person. My boyfriend and I saw a Groupon for this and decided to try it out. Our deal was $29 for 20 rounds. We bought 2 Groupons, so we got 40 rounds for $58! We only used a combined total of 6 rounds so we have plenty more rounds left for future use. They expire a year after Groupon redemption. It was the first time for both of us. We tried the low-arc softball, the high-arc softball and the 40 mph baseball. My fav was the low-arc softball. We had a BLAST - but they do need a few more cages! We went on a Sunday evening, and it was pretty packed, so try to go at an off peak day/time. There are lights on at night - major plus! I deducted 1 star because the bathrooms were beyond filthy. Great alternative to breaking plates if you are stressed. I'm a sissy and play the low-arc 60mph softball. They have other speeds for baseball. It's $3 per 30 pitches as of 5/22/2011 (prices subject to change) and it's fun to have a quick game. It can become an expensive hobby, too. It's addictive and I burned through a second game because it was so fun. -1 star because the bats/helmets sizes are not necessarily matched to your body size. I found myself choking the bat a little higher (less stability) and my helmet kept coming down over my eyes like I was some 5 year old kid. Fun, nonetheless, and I will be back. read more
