I have had these cottages on my list for YEARS. When we first pulled up I was a little worried. This place doesn't look the best from the outside, just being very honest. Then we parked and the check in area was locked so we started to panic but luckily someone came right away. The maps given for directions were poor but that was the end of the bad. The room was amazing! It was huge and beautifully decorated. They also had cute costumes in the room for you to use to dress up and take pictures. The room was very well cleaned and this is greatly appreciated, especially since the room was large and had a running water feature. Can't wait to come back and stay in another room. read more

I'm impressed with the level of detail that went into this themed cabin. It's tri-level and you enter from the second floor, where there is the Jacuzzi upon entering to your left and a swing under a tree to your right. Downstairs you pass a little drawbridge with a "moat" (with water!) to a dining area with long table where the kitchenette area is, replete with ice machine, Brita pitcher, sink, mini fridge, microwave, keurig and a restroom. Upstairs is the bedroom, with a gargoyle overlooking and statue of king and queen. Some of the lights and sconces are broken or missing, the knight no longer works. We were tripping out hard when I flipped the switches by the swing and the blue lights and moat began spewing water down fountain by the kitchen. This was amazing. I was literally jumping up and down when we entered the place. I am so impressed by how cool this place is, even with the things over time that have fallen into disrepair the detail overall is nothing short of impressive. Not sure how anyone can complain about something like this. The shower head has a rainfall head, the stones in the shower, to the shape of the mirror, it was all intentional. I saw nothing "icky" in selecting the specific stone-like accoutrements to complement the theme. There's a tv in the bedroom but why would you even wanna watch tv in a castle garden? COME ON! Loved the vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, flickering lights, ambiance - we put on Celtic music and enjoyed the peace away from the city. This isnt even our first day here I just couldn't wait to update my review. I happened to get his and her house slippers as one of the anniversary gifts for my bf and it worked out perfectly to grace our castle floors. Highly recommended! read more

What a fantastic hidden gem. The cottages are spectacular, the manager is amazing, and the amenities are perfect. There's a kureig in the room with a selection of coffee and teas, ice makers, filtered water c a mini fridge, and super comfortable beds. The tub is spectacular. There's a fabulous coffee shop across the street and the village is three blocks away. There is a fantastic courtyard and cats to cuddle if you're inclined. A wonderful vacation spot. read more

We had a bad experience. The section where you wash your hands had mold. This was located above the wall heater on the ceiling. The office was closed already We left because we did not want to stay in a room with mold. We left a note and dropped the keys with the note in the box. We noticed the mold at 8pm. My husband called booking.com and was told they could not refund him. This was not worth 180.00. The place looks run down. I took pictures of the mold. No one at the place has reached out to us. read more

Castlewood Cottages is a hidden gem in Big Bear. The hosts were amazing. Check in went smoothly. It was a romantic get away weekend surprise for my wife's birthday. The turn down service and fresh, chocolate covered strawberries were the perfect rouch. The Robin and Marian cottage was exactly as advertised, a fun Medieval themed cottage with an in room hot tub. The location is fantastic. A short walk to the village as well as popular spots nearby to eat. My wife and I are looking forward to returning and seeing what their other cottage themes look like. Truly one of the best experiences we've ever had. I love a good theme hotel and when I saw this come up on IG I immediately saved it. When we realized we'd be in the area for a wedding we decided to book a few nights for our anniversary. You truly feel transported to a different time. Love that they include some costumes where you can really immerse yourself into the experience. It's comfortable and they supply a lot of the things that you might need. It's close to the shopping center and food which makes it convenient for when you decide to leave the room. 10/10 would recommend. read more

This was so clean and cozy! Perfect for a couple's getaway. My husband and I stayed in the Haunted Manor and LOVED the ambience, especially the apothecary and jetted tub. Only complaints were that the giggles and murderous laughter were a little loud when we were trying to sleep. Also really wish there was another comfy chair to sit in downstairs--my husband and I had to alternate sitting in the one cozy chair and the hard dining chairs. Didn't ruin the experience, though! This place is fantastic. I love the themes and I love the idea behind it. As a renfaire enthusiast, this place made our stay magical. It was nice and quaint bu5 also a bit quirky. The owner was a blast to talk to. She was super helpful whenever we had issues (the hot water), but overall, we loved our anniversary staycation. We were fortunate enough to stay in the tree house. This was perfect with all its little nooks. We paid for the champagne which was a good bonus when we drank and enjoyed our couple time in the jacuzzi. I was sad there was not snow, but this is not any fault of this place. I will say, the costumes provided are a fun addition for photo ops. I loved every moment during out 3 day getaway. My boyfriend and I went up to this cabin last weekend and we absolutely LOVED IT!! It was perfect in every way and so cozy. The jacuzzi is what we looked forward to at the end of the day. The candles gave it that extra romantic touch. The gentleman that helped us during our stay was kind, patient, and absolutely fantastic in every way. This is the first time we stayed here and it is beyond or expectations! The rooms are designed in a way that makes you leave the real world and escape into a fantasy for a night or two. Had such an amazing weekend at the Haunted Manor. You can tell that so much love and dedication went into creating this theme. Maria was so cool and funny and gave us a full rundown of tips and rules to make sure we had a good stay. I appreciate her taking the time to fix the portrait ahead of time and set the tv to "haunted mansion" music to make sure the vibes were just right when we walked in. My favorite part to look at had to be the cemetery and tree, although it was a little freaky at night hahaha also the lady of the manor does like to keep you up The room came stocked with handy amenities (fridge, coffee maker, Britta water filter, tea, pods, dishware, microwave). Water pressure in the shower was great, jacuzzi was sooo relaxing and the fireplace and heater had us so cozy. 1000% recommend this place and I can't wait to come back and hopefully meet sir gawain! read more

The website doesn't do this place justice. The site (like all Big Bear sites) is super outdated. I saw the pictures and figured it would be cute but probably cheesy. Thankfully, I was wrong! The place rocks! First of all, checkin was amazing due to Dylan. He is super friendly and on top of it. He made sure our room was ready, gave us a ton of info and was a pleasure to be around. Made for a great start to our little getaway weekend! We got the Treehouse themed cabin. It's a legit treehouse. We're 20something feet off the ground and there are real trees going through the deck. It's insanely spacious and clean! We made use of the wood burning fireplace right away, got the hot tub set up with the bath bombs they have available and started on libations. Okay, this place is the epitome of attention to detail. You think you've found all the little woodland creatures carved into doors, laid around the cabin and whatnot, but you'll end up finding more trinkets as you do the day to day. We met a couple next door who were friendly and said they loved this place so much, this was their second trip. We will definitely be back as well! This looked like a great place for a fantasy weekend getaway and it did not disappoint. The staff is friendly and the grounds are quaint. We stayed in the Castle Garden cottage, which is well decorated. It is obvious that much thought and creativity went into the features of this "castle". The only warning I have is that there is no AC. We went in August, and the room was a tad warm with the Summer weather, though tolerable most of the time. I don't normally do reviews online, but I couldn't pass the chance to for Castlewood after the amazing experience we just had! My partner and I recently stayed at Enchanted Forest and we enjoyed our 3-night stay! The cottage was so cozy and unique, it made our stay in Big Bear super fun. We enjoyed every detail of decoration throughout Enchanted Forest, from the foliage to the magical fairies. Even the entire property outside was unique with little places to sit or even have a spot to play table tennis. Pam was very lovely when we first met her to check in, and when we were checking out - we bonded a lot on hobbies like board games and Dungeons & Dragons with friends haha. We even met little Sir Gawain, the management of the property as we were checking out lol. Castlewood also had unique gifts available for purchase in their gift shop, some handmade by the owner, from candles to bath salts unique to each themed cottage on site! I was able to pick up a body butter inspired by Enchanted Forest. I wish I was able to get an Enchanted Forest candle though to relive the memories at home haha, they were just sold out, but it's okay! Overall, I would recommend this place to my couple friends for their potential romantic getaways in Big Bear! The kitchenette and bathroom was also clean and overall the cottage was very well maintained. We did just go during the Summer season so it did feel a little warm sometimes, but it was doable for me and my partner. We're already looking forward to coming back again in the future, maybe to even try staying in another cottage! :) read more

LIVE YOUR FANTASY! Castlewood is where dreams are made of. This place is AMAZING! I can't believe it flew under my radar after multiple Big Bear trips. I'm SO in love. We came here for a birthday trip and I'm over the moon a place like this exist. Our room came equipped with costumes which was such a magical touch. We had SO much fun. We stayed the the Castle Garden room and the attention to detail is such next level. The photos don't do it justice AT ALL! Its walking distance to downtown so location is perfect but we honestly never wanted to leave the room. The bathtub was amazing covered by a lit tree canopy, guarded by a knight. I can't wait to come back visit and try new rooms. I understand if this isn't your thing, please move along. If you get it though, BOY are you in for a treat. One of a kind. Gem of Big Bear! Staying in the Antony and Cleopatra room felt surreal and almost spiritual. The detail to the artwork on the walls, bedding, fireplace and bathroom was amazing; it drew me in. I had some strong dreams at night, almost sexual in nature. Mind you; I was sleeping right next to my husband...lol! I highly recommend purchasing the candles in the gift shop and lighting them in the room. It added a sense of mystery to the whole experience. We look forward to our next stay! read more

I would say our overall experience was very pleasant. It's in Big Bear and it's a cabin so expect possible bugs and critters. That said, we only had outdoor friends during our stay which was nice. The only negative I would give is the fountain in the room does have a strong mildew smell. If you are sensitive to mildew or dust these rooms may not be for you because they have a lot of small areas that I would imagine would be difficult to clean after every guest. We loved the thoughtful design put into the room we stayed in. It was fun and quirky. We would definitely come again and stay in another room. read more

Definitely a unique experience. To each there own. This was a weekend getaway surprise for my husband. I was sold by jacuzzi in suite. However, once in room I quickly realized that I made a mistake. The jacuzzi tub was filthy with dried scum, there was mold on the walls, we had a cobweb and ant infestation. Will not recommend, especially for the price. First time to big bear. Beautiful city but there are plenty of accomodations that we will seek out next time. Showed the girl at the desk Maria the photos and was told...hey we will set more traps next time. read more

My spouse and I spent hours relaxing in the big tub under the tree with just the tree lights on and the waterfall running and fireplace going. I've been going to Big Bear my whole life and never knew about this place. It was booked for our 30th anniversary. The first night we stayed in the Castle and were blown away by the details put into the design. Our second night was at the Haunted Manor and again we were amazed by the thought and detail in the design. This was truly an amazing experience. The property has something magical going on and there is a serene peaceful vibe. The staff were all pleasant and accommodating. ENCHANTED FOREST We have been coming to this place of business for over 25 years and have always been very happy with the condition of the rooms and the staff. This weekend we were very disappointed with it. The hot water in the shower would not work, even after we informed the office of the issue so it could be fixed. The toilet seat was broken and would slide off when using the facilities. UNACCEPTABLE!!! We spoke with a woman in charge named Pam, and told her the issues and that since we paid for decent accommodations and did not receive them requested a partial refund. We were told that she was not authorized to issue one. This is a shady way to run a business. They are happy to take your money but not really about how the place looks or the people who rent their cottages. This is our last visit. read more

One word, delightful. Firstly, I was impressed with the cleanliness of the room. It would be easy for a room modeled after a cave to become dusty and dingy but it was not. I tested several spots for dust and barely found any and the appliances were all clean, as well as the bedding. Secondly, the amenities in the room are fabulous. I was an after-hours check-in and the room was all ready for me when I arrived with a light on, instructions, and the heat on. You get a large mini fridge, a microwave, wine glasses, cutlery, a couple of dishes, A full Brita (most hotels will only give you one bottle of water if you're lucky), an ice machine, a Keurig (I believe, I'm picky and bring my own coffee maker with me), a little dish sponge and soap and everything you need to start a fire immediately. It's the little things such as being able to wash a dish that add to the overall comfort. The jacuzzi tub was so awesome, especially with a fire going. It was the main event of my weekend away and it did not disappoint at all. If you forget to pack bubble bath the boutique sells all sorts of bubble baths and things of that nature as well as firewood, outfits, etc. The outdoor area could benefit from a sweep to clear the leaves but it did not detract from the experience at all and the delightful groundskeeper (a cat) made his way to my room for an inspection and a drink of water. Additionally, the cottages are within walking distance to the village and a stones throw from a fantastic crepe stand and several restaurants so you don't have to worry about fighting for parking on a busy street. Overall it was a lovely, calming experience and I look forward to staying in another room next time. read more

I wanted to book a romantic getaway for myself and my husband and I happened to come across Castlewood Cottages in Big Bear Lake, CA. The first time I went to see it, there was a wonderfully pleasant person by the name of Richard who shared the romantic origins of this enchanting place. Talk about excellent guest relations and customer service skills!!!! When I went back with my husband to share my beautifully positive experience to see if we could possibly check out one of the cabins we saw on the website to book it, we were accosted by this older lady with longish wavy blond hair who, in fairy tale parlance, could be likened Snow White's step mother. She was rude and condescending and completely SHATTERED the positive fairy tale atmosphere so masterfully created by Richard. This woman has ZERO guest relations skills, ZERO customer service skills and my husband and I are voting with our dollars and taking our business elsewhere! Please! You have such a unique facility in such a beautiful setting. Hire someone like Richard who will ENHANCE the fairy tale experience who will honor this place, not scare off the customers and cast a shroud of darkness like this "wicked stepmother" gatekeeper. read more

This place is amazing! Absolutely the best experience I've ever had! We stayed in the crystal cave for our anniversary/Valentine's day. The cottage was so beautiful and cozy. These cottages have everything you need for a romantic getaway. I spent the majority of my time in the gift shop/lobby that's filled with bath soaks, lotions, candles, books, gemstones and literally anything you could ever want! This place exceeded our expectations. When we made the reservation through Groupon, we picked a smaller cottage (King Arthur) for ~$100.00. When we got there, we saw that the larger room (Castle Garden) was being cleaned. We asked the cleaners if we could peak in and he was so gracious to allow us to do so. We decided to spend an additional $100.00 to stay in this room and we were not disappointed. The medieval-themed room was so cool. You can tell that owner really put a lot of efforts into designing and building this room. I was expecting something cheesy from Hollywood but that was not the case. Everything looked authentic.
