Fast, efficient service. But I learned the hard way that you have to use the Yelp coupon to get the big discount, and you have to mention it BEFORE they start the test. There are at least two coupons: the one on their website is $20 off, the Yelp coupon is $25 for the whole thing. Although I failed my test (testy NO emissions) I had a good experience here; the tech was very helpful throughout the procedure. In the beginning, he pointed out that my coolant was near empty (!) and that the engine would likely overheat during the test; allowed me to walk down the street to pick up some antifreeze/coolant and helped me get that in before the test. True to their word, since I failed there was no charge; now I need to fix the issue and bring back for retest. read more

Based on some of the reviews on here, I thought I would try Castro Smog and bring in the $29.95 coupon. I found it difficult to make it in during the week before their 6:00 close time, so on a Friday I had off, I planned to bring my car in the morning for a smog check. When I arrived at 9:15 am, the shop was closed and front door locked despite the sign saying that the place opens at 8. I waited a while and no one showed up. When I asked the gas station attendant adjacent to Castro Smog, he growled at me like I was a bother and grunted that he didn't know anything about Castro Smog. If you can go somewhere that is more reliably open and convenient, I definitely say go there. I am sure Castro Smog is a good place, and it is very conveniently located, but NOT if it isn't open when it is advertised to be. (By the way, I ended up going to the 76 Station Smog on the corner of 19th Ave and Judah and was done in 15 minutes with very good customer service.) read more

I've used them 2x in the past month and both experiences have been great! The first time was for our 2009 Audi we were selling. I called to make a reservation same day an hour before the slot I wanted and they got me in. I also received the discount by checking in on yelp. The test itself took a little less than 30 minutes and Tim was nice enough to tell me my tires were low and parked my car next to the air pump. The second time was for our 2014 Audi SQ5. I made the reservation online and showed up a few minutes before the designated time. Same quick service, discount, and it took even less time. Bottom line: 20-30 minutes, cheap, nice courteous guy, and you can walk around the Castro strip while you're waiting. read more

Don't go here unless you like getting ripped off. I don't know shit about cars but I know smog checks are pretty straight forward so I look on yelp and call this guy to make an apt. I don't bother to ask about pricing because they have good reviews (I skimmed instead of reading through the negs like I should have) and they state their pricing on their website so I'm thinking, "cool, a transparent business". I get there and the guy is very nice and pleasant. He says something like "your car looks bigger than the other Element I did the other day, it may cost more, I'll check". Long story short he comes back and says "yes, it's bigger, it's considered an SUV". He charges me and when I get home my husband laughs at the (not obvious to me) obvious scam. I then go to the website and sure enough it states "all cars, minivans, SUV's and light duty trucks." under the quote. So basically the whole "it's an SUV I have to charge more is BS even to them. What a jerk! Reporting to BBB next! Nobody likes getting ripped off even for $20. read more

I got my '94 smogged here in January 2011, and everything went well. But before you go: 1) Find their discounts on the internet, like at their website. 2) Call them to get a quote, mentioning the deal on the internet. (For older cars [1976-1995] there's an additional $20 test for low pressure fuel tank vapor (EVAP), total for my '94 was $50.95). Then just show up with your quote and their guy will handle the rest. In my case, no waiting, prompt service, no hidden costs or games played. The test results are electronically sent to DMV by midnight the same day, if not earlier. The waiting room can get a little fume-y, but great car magazines. read more

My experience was completely positive. This drill is a pain what with coupons, hidden charges, and delays. None of that happened at Castro Smog. They took me as promised, accepted the on-line coupon and completed everything in less than 20 minutes. They're a little hard to locate within a gas station that also handles ZIP cars but worth searching out. Best ( and cheapest!) smog experience yet. read more

I read the reviews on yelp and was prepared with my $29.95 internet coupon (see sfadvertiser.com) - dropped off the car and came back 15 mins later to find my car's smog test had been "aborted" I was told I had to bring my car into the mechanic, that my car's computer didn't communicate with the machine doing the test and was asked to still pay the full $29.95 amount. I bargained him down to $20 instead. I called my mechanic who sent me to a smog check place at 14th and Mission, it took them 2 tries of the test, but they got it working. Apparently this is an issue on many newer model cars that have intricate computer systems. Not sure why this place didn't try my test again but I wasted another hour of time to finally get the smog test completed at the 2nd shop. It cost more at the 2nd shop but at least I got the test done! read more

Do i have to give a star? Really? Dont even bother to make appointments here. He does NOT even show up. The sign says he opens at 9 so i made my appointment online for 9 on saturday. I got there 10 minutes earlier and was waiting and waiting but nothing happened. No calls or anything. The next door people told me he usually comes in around 9:30. ?????? WTF?? But the sign and the website say he open at 9. While waiting, i already decided to go somewhere else but i really wanted to see his f**king face. So i waited. Finally He showed up at 9:35, half asleep. He does not seem to care his business at all. He just works when he wants to work. Do not even bother with the online appointment thing. He upcharges first and give you $20 discount which after all is still expensive than other places. I used to go there every two years, expecting the same awesome service i got in the past. After I read reviews on all the smog check places in the area, I chose this one, which was convenient for me also because it was open on Sundays. I made an online appointment on their website and made sure I got there in time. But when I got there, I had a horrible surprise, the place was CLOSED, even though all the signs around said OPEN! I asked the guy at the gas station next door, but he didn't know anything, he just said the place was closed and he did not expect it to open that day. I have a 1992 Jeep and I had to have a second test ($30 of the total) for anything earlier than 1995. I guess for a newer Jeep it would have been $83. I had a smog test done here today and was very pleased with the experience. I made an online appointment by way of their website for a time about 45 minutes later. I showed up at the appointed time, and there was no line. The guy (first initial "S", so based on other reviews here this must have been Sandy) stopped what he was doing and attended to me immediately upon my arrival. He promised that the test would be done in about 15 minutes, and that's about what it took. He was professional in his interactions with me throughout. Since I had been shafted once before (by another outfit) with a bait & switch on the cost of a smog test, this time I confirmed before starting the process that I'd get the discount advertised on the website.
