The facility and staff are nice enough, but it felt like a sales-driven practice. I prefer my previous dentist, who focused more on care.

I am updating my review after another overcharge from this office. This time, I was overcharged by three times the correct amount and paid $3,300. After submitting a formal complaint to the DMHC (Department of Managed Health Care), they investigated and ruled in my favor. I am now receiving a refund of $2,060. Whenever I previously questioned the billing department about these charges, I was just given the runaround. I was even informed that if this office continues to overcharge patients, they risk being kicked out of the HMO network. They are really good at INVENTING overcharges. I am leaving two stars instead of one only because the female dentist here is truly nice. Something is wrong with their professionalism. My family went for a regular dental cleaning, the doctor here told us we have to do deep cleaning and eight hundred deposit after insurance for the initial appointment. We told them just do regular is fine, then the doctor said "nonsense, meaningless." What a scam. We went to another dentist to check and deep cleaning is not necessary at all. Then we asked Neigbor who been here, she also got scam. She (50 yo) was told to have cavity and need treatments. Well she has no cavity after another visit in other dentist. TLDR: Annual dental cleaning. 15 minute appointment but less than 10 minutes actually spent cleaning my teeth. Will not be returning. This was the second time that I came to smile dentistry but the first time that I had Dr. Aditi Mehndiratta. She started by checking my gums, looking for cavities, and asking about flossing habits. She spent about 5 minutes doing all that and then wrapped up by asking me about my concerns. I told her about my TMJ clicking and if braces were a recommended solution to attempt to realign my jaw. She dismissed it and said that a mouth guard would be better but didn't explain how. Left after reminding me to floss more often and then said that someone would talk to me more about the mouth guard later. Afterwards, the hygienist started. Unfortunately, I did not catch her name. She polished my teeth in a rush. So much so that the polishing tool that she was using had to be adjusted twice. She also ended up brushing a part of my lip and making the polishing tool vibrate on my teeth while trying to polish my molars. Once she was finished polishing my teeth and rinsing them off, she used floss. The proper way that I learned how to floss is that you pull the floss under the gums and against the sides so that you get everything out. The hygienist just forced floss between my teeth and she missed a quarter of them. Just got the floss between my teeth enough but didn't reach gum. She ran out pretty quickly so a third person, who I believe is the receptionist, could talk to me about the mouth guard. The receptionist let me know that the mouth guard is not covered under my insurance so it should be around $1,500 but that they would discount it for whatever reason to a little over $350. Didn't end up going for the mouth guard as I didn't feel that I had enough information to fee that it would help. I inquired about the rushed cleaning since both the doctor and the hygienist left in such a hurry. Was told that the dental office is a double speciality. No other explanation. This is the first time that I have left a dental cleaning feeling as though I could have done a better job at home. I don't believe that it is an unreasonable expectation that a good dental cleaning should take more than 10 minutes. I will not be returning. read more

I had a very disappointing experience at Castro Valley Smiles Dentistry. I went in last year for a routine general cleaning, but the process was unusually painful--especially the way they checked my gum health, which was the most uncomfortable experience I've ever had at a dentist. After the X-rays and gum check, they informed me I needed a deep cleaning and immediately presented a quote for nearly $2,000. I told them I only wanted a general cleaning that day and would consider the deep cleaning later. Instead of proceeding with the cleaning, they briefly examined my teeth again and told me the appointment was over. I left without receiving the basic cleaning I originally scheduled. At the time, I thought this might be standard procedure, but I recently visited another dental office in Castro Valley and had a completely different (and far better) experience. The gum check was quick and painless, and I was told I didn't need a deep cleaning after all. It's now clear to me that my experience at Castro Valley Smiles Dentistry was more about upselling services than providing appropriate care. I went in for a partial denture. Repeatedly, I told them I did NOT wat the premium version. Yet, that it was I got. I tried to dispute this. All they said was that I wanted the premium. That was a lie. They said I signed for it. I signed for regular partial dentures Their electronic forms suck. They are very ambiguous. In addition to the above, the dentist kept insisting the partial fitted in my mouth perfectly. After 3 or 4 follow-ups, it still doesn't not fit. All I have to show for the $1200 I spent is a space in my mouth where 3 teeth were and a piece and a partial denture that is completely useless. My advice: Even if all of your teeth are falling out, do NOT ever go to Castro Valley Smiles. They care only about the money, not the patient. read more

As an older patient, Dr Lee accommodates my need for patience, gentleness, and time to talk in preparation for my dental services. Jessica Operations Manager was personable as she helped me relay a message to Dr Lee when he was not in the office. Joan lie Dental Assistant had a softness for Senior Citizen. The staff of receptionists has changed and I noticed a difference in the tone of hospitality held in earlier years. Dr Lee now in the office only one day a week which has an adverse effect on scheduling availability. I hope he's wise as he makes future decisions for this location. read more

Dr. Lee really struggled to resolve my edge-to-edge bite and now I have a posterior open bite as well and had to start over elsewhere with braces with an orthodontist for an additional year. I fell and chipped both front teeth badly (night before) and called today to get an appointment assuming it would be a couple of days but NO...GACQUEL the appointment staff got me in within 5 hours same day! Turned out I needed to repair them both with veneers and didn't want to wait for days for that but NO...they do all of this ON THE PREMISES! Brianna the tech walked me through the procedure and the dentist; Dr. Cere was FANTASTIC! They ALL stayed way past closing to get me "up & smiling" the SAME day! What a joke- I'm surprised that the doors are still open. I guess it's my fault for not doing any research. My normal dentist was closed because of a holiday but needed to see a dentist asap. They said they had an appointment and they also accepted my insurance- fantastic, lucky me. I thought I would get my mouth checked- maybe get a quick fix until I could see my normal dentist- not the case. Was told I needed 5 crowns and that we were going to start today. I accepted only 2 teeth to be done- the dentist filed my teeth down and put temps on until my perms (crowns) came in- they needed cash money now. It's a holiday (veterans day) so was unable to get them cash so had to get it financed. I got 2 out of 5 recommended crowns and it cost $2150- with my very good insurance. Went back 4 weeks later after they canceled on me twice- to get my perm teeth. Meanwhile I paid the bill in full once I got the bill from the financial institution within 15 days. Since then, I've seen my normal dentist and he said that I in fact didn't need 3 more crowns and I didn't need the 2 I was told had to be done then. My dentist was actually outraged that another dentist would recommend such a procedure for a basic filling. I just chalked it up to getting taken advantage of and it was done. Never going back there anyway! Now, 2 months later I'm getting a vague- no info bill for $50. WHY? I paid in full months ago and the bill has no information on it other than I owe them $50 within 30 days but haven't seen them in over 60 days....? Makes no sense. Dental scammers....? There is no way to trust a dental office that after paying what they charge at the office, they send another bill trying to collect 70% more. I had already paid 130 dollars for their laser cleaning a couple of times when, out of the blue, they decided it should have been 220. When I called them to find out, the girl who answered said that it had been generated by the system and I should just ignore it. Next thing I know I'm even getting calls to collect. One week after walking into the office and having been assured the claim was canceled, I received another notice. Went in for a cleaning. X-ray technician got the x-ray wrong 3 times (only partial imaging was showing), until someone came teach her how to do it properly. I hope not all customers get this extra radiation exposure. Dentist (Dr Seung Lee) rushed through the cleaning within 60 seconds. Not sure if he was super efficient or super irresponsible. Had my first visit here, the front desk and the dental assistants are very nice. Dr. Seung Lee looked at my xray and looked at my teeth and started saying i need all these work done. When I'm only here for cleaning. I have a dentist i usually go to ever since i was a kid but i live further now and thought this dentist place would be good. Dr. Seung Lee did not show me where and which teeth needed work just that i needed multiple work that needed to be done. I'm well aware of what has been done with my teeth and have been up to date with getting routine cleaning and dental check ups. So for him to tell me I all of a sudden need all these work done I knew he just was one of those dentist that just want BUSINESS. Great place just NOT HONEST. Started out good didn't wait long, got X-rays, saw dentist briefly said my crowns looked fine And to use water flosser more. When I went to book my cleaning they said I needed root planeing. I said I had had at my old dentist just 6 months earlier. I made apt and had to cancel as I couldnt afford $800 I called back later and tried to just get a regular cleaning apt. The girl I was talking too said 'No you have to get root planeing as you have an infection. ' well this was news too me... this was the first I heard of an infection. No pain, dentist said nothing. Dr. Seung Lee is funny and explains things that is easy to understand. The front end manager, Yuni, is super friendly and helped break down the cost/payment plans options. If I could give a zero*I would. The office is very unprofessional and rude for the most part. They scheduled my appointment without looking in to why I needed to go there's it seems that there was no flow of information between the office and the doctor and they do not check the history of the patient before scheduling as to why the patient is coming in and what are the prerequisites before the patient comes in, in terms of do they need to be fasting as a back up plan or not. . I had a infected tooth number 30 that needed to be taken out that I was already on antibiotics for 10 days. After I went there and sat in the chair for the oral surgeon. He said that I need general anesthesia for the tooth to come out because infected tooth. Don't get numb. After waiting one week for the appointment and then waiting another week to find another appointment this was a huge disappointment. This was the no-brainer thing that an office should have done before even scheduling. Between the office and the contractual oral surgeon, it seems that there was absolute zero flow of information and nobody want to take responsibility. At the end of the day as a patient is not my responsibility to figure out whether I need general anesthesia for the appointment or not and should I be fasting or not. My expectations were low, but they proved they could do even worse. Front office are are incompetent, infantile and lazy. Lost one appointment and canceled another. No way to call the office (outsourced answering service,) no way to email the office. Only way to contact anyone is to show up in person and be treated rudely. After that the Dr. was passible at best. Mediocre bedside manner and not enough detail about what is going on, what the plan is and how to get there. After all of this expect to have billing problems. Double-billing or incorrect coding leads to massive headaches. As mentioned previously there is no way to call and actually speak to someone so once there is a problem expect weeks of runaround. California Health and Safety Code provides specific guidelines for billing. Castro Valley Smiles Dentistry will not follow them. read more

I made a verbal contract with Yuni the office manager on 2/4/23 to have an extraction/implant/crown completed on tooth #13 for a total of $6,099 and that any Delta Dental Insurance payment would be applied to this amount. I paid the $6,099 out of my pocket up front before work began. Delta Dental paid the dentist $936 for the work. I have been trying with no luck to get a credit from the dentist for the $936. Many attempts have been made on my behalf to receive a credit. When I call the office I am placed on hold for about a half an hour after which time the dental offices' phone system drops the call. Then I would call back and the receptionist would tell me Yuni will call me back, however, she does not return her calls. So having made no progress over the phone, I went into the office and was left to wait in the lobby over an hour before being helped. I then spent another hour arguing with Dr. Lee and the office manager explaining my predicament. It is very frustrating to have to expend so much time and energy completing such a simple task. Based on my experience at Castro Valley Smiles I have the impression that this dental office is more concerned with maximizing profits and less concerned with the patients wellbeing. read more

In 4 months they have changed their quote 3x. Current quote is nearly three times as much as the first quote. WEEKS of me trying to get an explanation. Manager refuses to get on phone, employees just transfer you from person to person. Several attempts by me and manager finally calls. Bottom line, she cannot explain why I was told three different prices, but price is now so much more because we are self pay. So in essence, you can charge more to individuals then insurance companies. Even though we were self pay and they knew that for the second estimate, they still won't honor that. Bad business. Admit your mistakes! Also, treatment recommended for my daughter that two other dentists have evaluated her for second opinions and say she does NOT need the treatment. Someone I know goes here and spoke highly of this place. I called them to see if my son who's 10 can get in for an appt. After I told the lady who picked up my call , without saying anything, she hung up on me. I called back and no one the phone. So I tried again and another lady picked and wasn't very friendly. I told her about my son and she said they don't do kids. Which is fine, the First Lady should have told me that instead of hanging up my call. I'm not sure what happened to this office. Got a great crown here 4 years ago. Went back in hopes of getting a cleaning but doc took a cursory look in mouth and recommended scaling. 5 minute talk with doc and X-rays, and these people charged my insurance close to $800 which Delta now says I owe $400 of it? Insult to injury, made an appointment with new dentist and got teeth cleaning same day without charge. Don't need a deep cleaning after all. If I were to have followed Castro Valley's advice, I would have had to wait, had my gums torn to shreds, AND would have been out of pocket another $$$$$$$. Beware. read more

I came in last week I had questions on getting Invisalign. This was my first time at this office, I've never been here. I told them specifically I just beat cancer I went thought 6 month of chemotherapy. I need Invisalign. The entire time, with all the questions I had I felt unwelcome and like I was bothering the doctor. I felt uncomfortable. No one cared about me and helping me. They promised to follow up to me about the price and never did. I just called the office and the lady at the front desk Gina I think wasn't that warm either. The office has certainly turned it around! My previous experience was awful. Despite the hiccups, I opted to give the office an opportunity to turn it around given feedback and looks like the team listened (not only did they acknowledge the review, but we also talked about the experience extensively during a follow-up visit). * There has been change with front office team! Yumi (office manager) and Michaela are awesome - professional, friendly, and go the mile to talk through services (both cost and recommended care), next steps, and following up with the dentist as needed when I am onsite, * Minor critical feedback - outsourcing the answering service. Not all calls are routed directly to the office and this can be particularly challenging if you need a more immediate update on appt details, changes, etc. I've previously left messages through the answering service to no avail and no receipt of clarity after noticing the online system showed discrepancy of appt time between reminder text and email. We showed up at the time of the first appt and were told the time was incorrect. The answering service contact also noted the different times and couldn't provide clarity and recommended we show up on the earlier time. The rep tried calling office via backdoor number and noted they also were not able to connect via phone. OVERALL, the whole experience has been solid since the last update - just a few minor tweaks on the answering service and working option for how to best connect for one off questions (phone, messaging, email, etc.) would be great. First time customer after being with same dental office for over 20 years. The care here for me was exceptional from first contact with making an appointment by phone. Yes, I had to hold a bit, but hey, they are busy. Thats a good thing. Everything was explained to me up front with complete digital x-rays to the charting that was done by the dentist. They were caring and I was well aware of my pre-existing conditions. The office manager clearly explained my out of pocket costs vs what insurance was going to cover for my deep cleaning to take place the next day, because that's when it was convenient for me. Next day- The dental hygienist Diana was truly caring and clearly explained what she was going to do and we communicated thru the whole process of almost 2 hours because I elected to have my procedure done in one sitting. She clearly explained my needed care that I was to take at home and I can't wait to return in three months to see my progress. Awful sleeky car salesman type of approach to sell extra and extra services like "laser treatment" , "bacterial profile in your mouth", "fluoride" treatment, "deep cleaning" : keep that in mind, they can easily convince you that you need all these. I visit dentists every 6 months with good oral health and did not fall for this sleek dentist (a clark really). My new dentist was surprised that Karan guy was trying to perform so much in my good mouth which are not needed at all. Well, I was told about the portable electronic Water Pik to use to treat gum disease in mouth pockets. In addition, the hygenist informed me that I need gum surgery. When I heard those words, I was disappointed. My former dentist in San Francisco failed to inform me about gum surgery. I wasn't aware of the Water Pik, which uses an electronic device to remove food particles from the gum pockets. My former dentist in San Francisco did not use laser technology to close the gum pockets after a deep cleaning procedure. In my dental health, I'm concerned about the cost of gum surgery and what I can do to prevent permanent gum disease. If you need dental care, Castro Valley Smiles Dentistry is the place to go. read more

Had a very pleasant experience for my first visit and cleaning. This was my second time at the office. First one was when my son had all his wisdom teeth taken out with Dr. Oz. It was a very good experience than so I decided to try them for me. I was very pleased. Front office was very friendly. The assistant who did my X-rays and assisted the dentist was very nice and made me feel very comfortable ( I didn't get her name ) Dr. Mahesh was very nice and through. The dental assistant Karina that cleaned my teeth was very friendly and did the best cleaning I've ever had. Truly disappointed! I loved this place when I first went a few years ago willing to take my children here and have had lots of dental work done. I had a bridge last year that left me with debilitating pain that lasted well over 2 months. The red flag was when I called on a Friday and there was no emergency dentist to help or even a call back. This last visit was the last straw. My appointment was canceled and despite receiving a verification text message my son could not be seen. I was told of obscure policy that if the appoint is not verified then it is canceled which I'm sure is their way of overbooking hoping that at least a few will fall off. It was extremely inconvenient as a working parent go screen Spam calls and make calls during my working hours. I took off of work to attend this appointment. Highly disappointed now off to find a new dentist that prides itself in quality patient care that upholds the values. I became a Castro Valley Smiles Dentistry patient in 2018 when Dr. Bollinger was there. Since she departed, I've noticed nothing but changes for the worse. The office manager is unprofessional, she never keeps her word. On more than one occasion she has rushed me off the phone promising she'll call me back & NEVER does. The office manager is extremely unprofessional. I get my teeth cleaned every 3-4 months as recommended by my hygienist. Back on Dec 6 2021, I was scheduled for a cleaning that had to be rescheduled the morning of because Kathryn who's a great hygienist couldn't work Dec 6. Things happen, I completely understand that Kathryn's a mother & unexpected things occur etc. At the time I had braces & had to have my wires removed prior to my cleaning appointments. Luckily, I was able to receive a cleaning the following day, Dec 7th 2021. On Dec 7th 2021 my next cleaning & exam appointment was scheduled for April 1st 2022. I received a call from the front office staff on Thursday, March 31st 2022 informing me that my cleaning would have to be rescheduled however I should still come in for my exam & x-ray's the following morning. Keep in mind, this is my 2nd cleaning that was unexpectedly cancelled. On Thursday, March 31st 2022 my cleaning was rescheduled for Monday, April 4th 2022 at 4pm by the team member who called me to cancel my cleaning. The team member stressed the importance of making sure that I STILL show up for my exam & x-ray's the following morning. When I arrived for my exam & x-ray's Friday, April 1st 2022 the team member who greeted me informed me that my appointment isn't until Monday, April 4th 2022. I was forced to explain everything the team member that called me on Thursday, March 31st 2022 & I previously discussed less than 24 hours before my appointment. Imagine my frustration at this point. What a inconvenience. After all the confusion, I demanded to be seen. I met with Dr. Lee briefly. Dr. Lee failed to acknowledge my previous cancelled cleaning appointment(s) by simply mentioning them, taking accountability, and apologizing for the inconvenience. By this time, I expected Dr. Lee to be fully aware of what occurred when I arrived that day. My time is valuable, canceling patients appointments is a major inconvenience especially when it's a sort notice cancellation. Instead, Dr. Lee rushed into recommended dental work & fee quotes etc. On Monday, April 4th 2022 I received a call from a staff member the day of my cleaning to cancel my cleaning AGAIN. I was livid about the sudden unexpected cancellation. I demanded to be rescheduled as soon as possible. The staff member that called me placed me on hold & left me on hold for over 16 minutes. The staff member NEVER came back on the line to assist me. That day, I tried calling back multiple times specifically to reschedule my cleaning. I wasn't successful reaching a live team member. Not one staff member ever followed up with me to reschedule my cleaning. I called Tuesday, April 5th 2022, the outcome was the same. I couldn't get a live staff member on the line. I called a few more times periodically, no luck. It wasn't until I called extremely upset on Tuesday, April 12th 2022 that I was able to express my frustration to the staff member who answered my call. Because of my level of frustration which I was very vocal about, the staff member I spoke with scheduled my cleaning for the following day Wednesday, April 13th 2022. I arrived Wednesday, April 13th 2022. None of the staff acknowledged my previous awful experiences that occurred between March 31st 2022 & April 13th 2022. No accountability or apology whatsoever. I mentioned that I'd like to speak with Dr. Lee prior to Kathryn starting my cleaning. Dr. Lee decides to barge in on Kathryn & I during my cleaning as if I could actually speak with him while my teeth were being cleaned. Dr. Lee's approach was aggressive, unprofessional, & rude. It made me uncomfortable. I did not appreciate his approach. My interactions with Dr. Lee have been unsettling. I requested his email address from Kathryn. Everything you're reading here was specified in an email I sent Dr. Lee on April 18th 2022. As of today, Dr. Lee hasn't responded to my email. I am disappointed with the way I've been treated by the staff at Castro Valley Smiles Dentistry. My concerns have been completely overlooked & ignored. read more
