Last summer, my parents dropped a huge bomb on me. For the first time in over 15 years, the two of them were moving out of Tyler to the Rio Medina area. By the time I graduated college, they were close to finishing the move. In my first week of living in the Rio Medina/San Antonio area, my dad took me out to lunch at a place he was excited to show me: Blu Lacy Smokehouse. At that point, I was impressed. After getting a job, moving out, and living in the big city of Hutto, I would always return to Blu Lacy every time I visited my family back in the Castroville area. It was smacking every time. Their cuts of meat were quality. For being an all-day BBQ establishment, it always tasted fresh. Even better, my dad was always happy to go with me and have quality bonding time. A few months ago, my dad sent me a message on Instagram. When he DMs me something, you never know what it could be. This time, he had some major developments to share: Blu Lacy was rebranding. Originally, Blu Lacy was a sister location to San Antonio's 2M BBQ, but the pitmaster of Blu Lacy and the pitmaster of 2M decided it would be best for the two to split and focus on their own establishments. Blu Lacy was sonically similar to 2M but had its own understanding. What was the true reason for the rebrand? My best guess is that they were trying to make it fit in better with the crowd in Castroville. The unique sides might not have been cutting it the same way the Mexican-inspired sides at 2M work for San Antonio, so they pivoted. Castroville Barbecue Company is really just a facelift. It knows it wants to be a modern version of a country-style BBQ establishment, and they do a great job at it. Just like what I remember at Blu Lacy, the meats are always on point. My favorite thing is their pork ribs. The way they fall off the bone made my dad and me giggle like little kids. The jalapeño cheddar sausage is pretty great, and the brisket is in the upper half of brisket I've had. Probably the best brisket at a non-sellout BBQ establishment I've had. It tastes like sellout BBQ. I'm shocked you can get a plate by 7 PM. The sides are nice. Their potato salad, creamed corn, and macaroni and cheese are all fantastic. Personally, I think removing the Tex-Mex flair from the sides is a bit of a bummer, but for a majority of Castroville residents, I can see it as an upgrade. People like my mother just wanted something that was no-frills. I've been twice since the rebrand: once with my father, once with my girlfriend. As someone who didn't know the backstory of Castroville Barbecue Company, I asked her for her thoughts on the restaurant after lunch. She said, "I used to have an aversion to ribs, but the pork ribs healed something in me. Something deep down." I recently selected this spot as my next BBQ destination to try out. I had a few days of from work, so I made the hike out on a Friday afternoon. Having dined at 2M before, I was hyped about this place. The restaurant is off the main road, and it appears to be two separate buildings, one specifically for the smoking. After parking, I eagerly made my way. The place appeared crowded as there were several people in line. This allowed me some extra time to decide on what to get. Although there was a line, the two guys putting the plates together were quick. I opted for the three meat plate, with brisket, turkey, pork ribs and my two sides were beans and potato salad. I opted to just dine at home so I am not sure what the dining room set up is like. All the meats were smoked to perfection, and were tender. The bbq sauce added a little extra to the meat, and I wish I had more of it. I thought the sides were spot on as well. There was a convenient lot to park right across the street. Walked right up and ordered inside. We got the two pounds of pulled pork platter for $50 with two sides- Mac and cheese/green beans. They were spicy but delicious. The breaded crumble on the Mac and cheese was divine. Sat outside on the patio with our two kiddos and puppy. Ordered drinks from the bar. Visited on a Friday evening and there wasn't many people aside from a couple ordering in front of me turns out on a nice evening people were enjoying the outdoor area! I ordered the 2 meat plate included the sliced brisket and pork ribs with the 2 sides cream corn and baked Mac and cheese. The brisket was ok a little dry compared to Blu Lacy and the pork ribs were meh. The baked Mac and cheese was dry and the cream corn was sweet and creamy that side is where it was! My wife ordered the brisket nachos, crispy nachos layered in white spicy queso topped with shredded brisket this is where it's at! The prices are reasonable and I noticed more options as well as the bar offerings are reasonable price and variety of beer and mixed drinks. I enjoy the fact that they have a play area for the kids while your enjoying your food and drinks overall atmosphere is great and live music makes it for an enjoyable atmosphere! Overall, a bit disappointed in the bbq however I do enjoy the atmosphere I'll be back to try out their burgers and don't sleep on those brisket nachos they are amazing! Formerly Blu Lacy, renamed Castroville BBQ Co, is similar in taste, but with a few new menu twists. You can still enjoy that amazing brisket and ribs and now with the added wings option, it's even better. The inside is the same, wooden tables for large parties and a few 4 seat tables for smaller groups. The outside overflow and bar is still there, but because it was cold outside, I did not venture out. The employees are friendly, which is always appreciated. Went to lunch today at Castroville BBQ with my daughter. My plate consisted of BBQ beef sausage, BBQ ribs, potato salad & supposedly pinto beans. The meats were very delicious with a flavorful smoky taste, but the BBQ sauce contained too much vinegar, and the beans were navy beans, cooked like pinto beans & the potato salad needed some sweet pickle relish. The potato salad was my liking to add sweet pickle relish, everyone does not like a hint of sweet in their potato salad. My daughters plate consisted of BBQ beef marble brisket which was very juicy & tender, but she said a little too much cracked black pepper was on the brisket, BBQ ribs, which again were great, she liked the beans but the Mac & cheese was cold. The restaurant is very nice inside, and you get to see the sides when ordering your plate. The staff were very nice. We ordered peach cobbler and it was delicious! You could taste the cinnamon, the peaches & crust were juicy and it was served warm. What a treat! Something has changed from when this restaurant was "Blu Lacey", and to me not for the better. Still expensive, but I no longer think the food justifies the price. The brisket here used to be great, now to me it is just ok. Mine had moisture, but the texture was off (had it sat too long?) and the flavor wasn't there. It was almost bland. Sausage ok. Turkey ok, but lost the flavor also. And the sides are different, and not at all pleasing to my palate. Used to really love them. A shame they did not have their homemade pickles anymore, just the typical (from a big jar) ones everyone else has. The facility and back bar are still there. I have been coming here since last year and it's always been spot on. The staff have always been great to us and always willing to answer any questions. The interior is classic rustic designs from the old meat factory it once was, has a nice feel to the modern take. The food is always fresh done infront of you which is great too! So, I waited until the 2nd time we went to eat to write this review to check consistency. First the location is awesome, It's in an old bar! Very clean and rustic inside, looks great! Both times we went we are greeted right away by the staff behind the counter and they start tking our order and preparing our food. The ribs, turkey, and brisket is some of the best I've ever had, juicy, flavorful and tender! I don't really enjoy brisket, but I love the brisket here! The sides are always on point, yummy beans with a kick, cheesy mac & cheese, tasty potato salad and creamy sweet corn! There is also a bar outside of the restaurant that makes some stiff drinks! All in all this is my new BBQ spot and I'm so happy that it's not super far away from us! Some folks say it's expensive but the food we get usually serves us two meals. Having good tasting sides, besides the meat, are huge to me and are a big deciding factor of whether it's a yes or no. I chose Maria's beans and the potato salad. Lemme tell ya, everything was flavorful and tasty! The brisket was melt in your mouth, the pork ribs were fall of the bone good, and the homemade sausage was deelish. I would have liked some mustard to go with the sausage. The beans were prob the best I ever tasted around thus far and contained bits of ham. The food is still good but it definitely took a hit with the new changes. The first thing was the brisket. Not as moist and juicy as it always was every time I've been there before. The turkey and the ribs were just as excellent though. Did not try any of the new items. The sides were also different and they're nothing to write home about. But I'm not there for sides except for the pickles and onions which was the biggest disappointment outside the brisket. You need to really consider bringing back the pickles and onions from before.
