I'd tried true bbq in Austin and was not impressed but willing to give it another try now that it's in San Antonio. I got the 1 meat plate of lean brisket with fries and Mac n cheese. The brisket was good but too salty! I had to douse it in bbq sauce to make it palpable. The Mac and cheese side was ok. The fries were amazing and crunchy!! The restaurant is new and has a nice view with windows. It was clean and there was plenty of seating. Would definitely come back on another time. I enjoyed my experience at this True Texas BBQ. Callouts for this location are Fryer section on menu with Fries and Chicken Strips 10/10. Also, lots of tables upstairs/downstairs and outdoors. Great for larger groups. Drink station on both levels and elevator available. I order Brisket lean (a little dry) will order regular next time. I wanted some bbq and this spot popped up. I ordered a pull pork sandwich, mac & cheese and a baked potato. It was delivered by grubhub. I opened my bag and it smelled good. I opened the container with the sandwich...I think the pulled pork had bbq. It was decent. The macaroni was ok. I did add a little coleslaw on the sandwich. I want to start out with a huge thanks to Elizabeth who was super accommodating and helpful, and I think she gives the restaurant a welcoming environment and atmosphere. Now for the food itself, I really like this place but I will give two things I wish it were to improve on: prices and ingredients. Namely, I would really love if they stopped using seed oil and switched to something like beef tallow or avocado/coconut oil instead. Just when you thought it was safe to count them as a legitimate 'cue option, they drop the ball. My takeout order was missing bread, sauce, and the extra pickles I ordered. And, while the brisket was tender, it was bland - lacking both significant smoke flavor or salt or pepper. While they were doing a brisk business, the "real" 'cue places have lines down the block and still manage to get the details right. At these prices, there are too many better options. read more

Arrived at 11am, opening time. Little frenetic because aimless employees. There is One register and then One touch screen to handle customer orders. The elevator takes you to a second floor dining area. The one guy there on a register, already slow, then answers the phone and lazily explains the hours and yes we are open and where we are located, etc... They call your name and you go up and get your order. It is grocery store brisket yall. Just like you go in to the HEB deli and get a sandwich, it's average. . But it ain't the same as Lenny's, Jersey Mike's etc... I had the sliced brisket sandwich. Macaroni n cheese, fried okra, and the serrano corn bread. The brisket was way too salty, honestly Bill Millers is better. The mac n cheese is really cheesy, it tastes good and I appreciate the strong cheese. My mother and I stopped in yesterday for lunch, we have had the pulled pork sandwiches on a previous visit. The flavor was good but there was a lot of fat in the meat, big hunks of it. So we thought we would try the chopped brisket sandwich. This was worse, there were huge chunks of meat, some were 3 in long and there were large pieces of just pure gristle and fat. I took the one sandwich back and showed it to them. They said they only do a coarse chop, and I said that was really coarse but that didn't explain the fat chunks. They said they would replace the sandwich, and I asked if they could replace it with a pulled pork and they did. So I asked if we would receive our $3 difference in the price and they said no, we replaced the sandwich. Not great customer service and we won't be returning. read more

As a vegetarian, this probably wasn't the smartest place for me to choose to eat lunch, but my family wanted to go, and I wasn't gonna stop them. I got the baked potato, which was cooked all the way through and was nice and warm I felt like the flavor Was lacking a bit, a little salt and pepper could go a long way. My family had the brisket plate and a sandwich. The mac & cheese was very classic, and the barbecue sauces were classic as well. The spicy barbecue sauce is way better than the original sauce, and not very spicy at all. It's nice that they mark which options are vegetarian, so I didn't have to question whether The dish had some sort of meat by product. I was curious about this place after hearing about it during the renovation and the marketing push HEB has been done; and HEB you did it right. When they say true Texas bbq they mean it. I appreciate how you can walk on and order at the counter or the kiosk. Staff is super friendly and enthusiastic about what they're serving and who they're serving. It's a casual dining setting with seating downstairs and upstairs. Pricing is better than most bbq places these days. Rarely when I visit a bbq restaurant is everything good. Usually it's great bbq and the sides are ok. Not here!! Everything was delicious. Brisket was tender, juicy and what you expect from classic brisket. The turkey breast was juicy and flavorful. The sides....hats off to whoever is the culinary director for HEB. Sides were not overlooked. The collard greens were amazing. Normally I prefer hot sauce with my greens but these greens needed absolutely nothing. The Mac & cheese was creamy and cheesy. I like how the sidewinder fries were done. There were maybe 5 people in here and it took us at least 15 minutes to get through the line ( one person in front of us) and when we did get through the poor guy didn't know how to work the register? So glad HEB added a True Texas bbq to this location. It is fairly new and very nice and clean inside with a friendly staff! I love the variety of drinks that they offer and they have the crushed ice! I'm from Biloxi Mississippi I was excited to try this place extremely disappointed! will not be back 3 people cost just over 80$ pull pork, was dry as leather, cream corn was not true cream corn just regular corn with milk in it very bland and not good! the apple cobbler was great but they give you an amount to maybe fill a 6-month old baby. Lean brisket was dry! I don't like fatty brisket. Stood in a really long line with only one unfriendly female cashier at noon. They need another cashier! They do have 2 kiosks you can place your order at and pay with a card, which I did. But I also had to purchase the banana pudding from the cooler and stand in line anyways. Lots of customers and staff on the first floor. It was a little hectic with people standing around waiting for their food and all these HEB employees walking around because it's new. Not one empty table on a weekday at noon. Some tables are connected so you have to sit next to strangers. What's nice is there's a 2nd floor via stairs and elevator! I went up there and there were only 3 people dining. It's much nicer and quieter. I appreciate the drink refills station along with endless napkins and utensils. They yell your name when your order is ready, so don't go upstairs. I was standing in the long line waiting to pay for cooler items, when they called my name like 5-6 times on the other side. An employee was cleaning tables so that was nice! Walked out a door that only led me to an enclosed patio dining area so I felt dumb! It is not connected to HEB! It's like a separate restaurant with a separate entrance. The banana pudding dessert had no banana pudding and was just sticky sweet cream with 2 slices of bananas and soggy wafers. Don't waste your money on it! Overall, not the best experience or food. I've been to other True TX BBQ in San Antonio that had juicy tender brisket and better customer service. The brisket was moist and tender however it tasted oven baked not smoked ‍. The star of this meal was the peach cobbler! It was outstanding. The brisket beans had so much potential but they let me down. I'm not sure how you mess up brisket beans but H-E-B did. They had a strong citrus flavor that overpowered the beans and brisket. I don't need lime, tomatos, or anything else in my brisket beans except brisket. The creamed corn was trying to be a cross between Mexican elote and creamed corn. The flavor profile was there but again it was overwhelmed by the taste of charred corn almost to the point of burnt. You can't be both you're either creamed corn or Mexican elote. The Mac and cheese was "pretty good" says my son. Look HEB I really want to like this concept however I was given subpar sides and prepackaged bbq sauce with liquid smoke, that kind of bbq is not "TRUE TEXAS BBQ" as you claim. Send your people on a bbq crawl and see what other pitmasters are doing and then try and recreate it using HEB products.The three stars are for the peach cobbler and the tender moist brisket. Clean, polite service. Brisket beans tasted like a canned product, very little brisket in the beans. Coleslaw was fresh and very bland. No flavor. Brisket, got half pound of fat and lean. Fat was moderately fatty as it should be. It was delicious, tender and moderately smoky ( they use electric smokers). The lean was very good as well. Not dry, perfect amount of salt, bark was very good. The fat cap on the lean was very flavorful, not too salty. Brisket at 24.00 lb is a bit pricey. read more

This place gets the award for worst BBQ in San Antonio! High prices for really subpar food. The BBQ was dry and for what was spent the portions were small. While it is a given that the price for brisket may be high the quality of the product was not in line with what is available elsewhere. Service was poor and the tables were not clean even though there was little to no customers traffic. Maybe this is what happens when a company ventures into a business arena where they have low experience. In closing if you want authentic Texas BBQ made by a top notch pit master you don't go to a mega grocery store! All in all you been there and never going back! read more
