We drive to Castroville for my daughter's DPS appointment and after we decided to grab lunch in the area. We found the cutest, most adorable restaurant. We walked in and were seated almost immediately even though it was very crowded and busy. We loved the decor and charm of this restaurant. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. We enjoyed DELICIOUS sandwiches, pasta and desserts. They have delicious daily specials. We'll be making the drive to Castroville more often for Castroville Cafe. read more

It's in a cute older home and I have not had any food. I didn't like here. They're not open as much every day so I would take advantage of when they are open. My hubby, granddaughter and I tried Castroville Café and wow!! What an absolute gem in Castroville! We ordered their vodka pasta (their house-made pink sauce) with chicken, along with their house salad topped with candied pecans and cranberries, and their house-made salad dressing it is to DIE FOR! oh and let's not forget their delicious homemade rolls. Everything was incredible. Even though it's a penne pasta dish, it wasn't heavy at ALL. The flavors were rich but not overwhelming, and we didn't feel weighed down after eating. And let me tell you the portion easily made two full meals. Truly worth every bite. This quaint little café serves real down-home cooking with so much heart behind it. We had such a lovely luncheon here earlier this year, that we decided to come back to celebrate a Birthday. I ordered the same sandwich, the Alsatian, and upgraded to the Castroville salad for $2 as a side. When my sandwich arrived, I was super disappointed. My plate looked nothing like what I had the previous visit. Sandwich was tiny and appeared sad. There was hardly any corned beef or sauerkraut. I Compared my sandwich photo from Jan to this visit , there's a big difference. Even the salad portion was smaller. For $14-$15, I can go elsewhere. My friend enjoyed her quiche and coleslaw. We decided to eat local and support small town businesses. We were driving downtown Castroville and came upon this quant and super cute cafe. You have a choice of eating outside or inside. Upon entering, you can tell this house was built a very long time ago. After asking, it was built in the 1800s! There is so much history here and it's apparent as it is shown with local town pictures hung all over the walls. The place is incredibly clean and the tables are spaced out appropriately. The service was incredibly fast and professional. Our server was kind, full of knowledge and willing to give us her opinion. What we ordered: 1.) Landmark sandwich: it has roast beef with caramelized onions, mushrooms, provolone, tomatoes and a horseradish Mayo On a sourdough bread. It was paired with a chicken tortilla soup. The bread was toasted nicely and the filling was flavorful the onions were caramelized well and the cheese Just oozed out. The only disappointment on this plate was the chicken tortilla soup. It was watered down without a lot of substance to it. It also had a mild flavor to it but it was edible. However, it didn't pair well with the sandwich. 2) Schnitzel sandwich: it's a breaded pork cutlet with lettuce, tomato, pickles, Mayo and mustard on a sourdough bread. Hold the pickles please! I personally like pickles by itself but not on a sandwich or Burger! I paired it with their homemade American potato salad. The sandwich was subpar, but the pork Cutlet was fried to Perfection. However, the cutlet was much smaller than the size of the bread slice so it made it seem Like you were being gypped. It was plain and nothing stood out. It was good to eat but not something I'd come running back for! The potato salad, according to my husband, could only taste the celery. For me, all I could taste was pickle. I also thought it was incredibly dry and possibly needed more Mayo/mustard and a dash of salt to bring out the flavors. Would I go back? Yes, but I'd try something different. Castroville (aka "The Little Alsace of Texas") is a small town brimming with identity, what with its German American heritage and distinctive Alsatian-Texas architecture. The same, unfortunately, cannot be said of its culinary scene, a hodgepodge of fast food, greasy spoons, and touristy Germanic fare (lots of sausages and sauerkraut -- "Alsatian cuisine" in its most reductive form). Castroville Cafe -- a cozy, tree-lined spot nestled in a residential neighborhood -- does little to differentiate itself from any other small-town cafe in South Texas, but it's a good option for (mostly) home-cooked comfort foods. With a name like "Castroville Cafe," one might expect to sample a few Alsatian classics like baeckeoffe, choucroute, or spaetzle, but no; this is a place for diner staples such as soups, sandwiches, and burgers. Fortunately, the kitchen lends a deft touch to these classics, resulting in a chicken tortilla soup with a rich, comforting stock redolent with aromatics, and a hearty burger with beef sourced locally from Dziuk's Meat Market. The burger is nothing fancy (just an 80/20 mix of chuck and brisket), but its irregular, hand-formed patty and backyard grill flavor are a welcome respite from the artificially juicy pre-frozen patties to which I've grown accustomed at other small-town eateries. Not everything is sourced locally nor made from scratch, however, as evidenced by the preponderance of Sysco-branded items on display (e.g., House Recipe ketchup). I understand why a place like Castroville Cafe would use wholesale distribution channels for essentials like condiments and sugar packets, but I expect scratch-made breads for the burgers and sandwiches. On a recent visit, a thick, stale sourdough bun brought down an otherwise excellent fried flounder sandwich, while a doughy, overly sweet wheat bun (served room temperature) conspired to undermine the burger. When I pressed my server, she admitted begrudgingly that all of the breads came from Sysco. Many small kitchens outsource baked goods, but why not partner with a local bakery (in this case, Haby's just down the street)? Desserts are a mixed bag. At one end of the spectrum, a deceptively simple chocolate-pecan sheet cake upped the ante with a superbly rich, buttery icing spiked with a pinch of cinnamon. The cake was moist, warm, and undoubtedly made from scratch on the premises. At the opposite end of the spectrum, peach cobbler was an abject failure, a sloppy, gloppy mess of syrupy canned peaches, brown mush masquerading as pie crust, and a swirl of toxic soft-serve vanilla ice cream. Were I to judge Castroville Cafe on the merits of its food alone, I would likely award 2.5 stars, but the middle-aged waitresses are ingratiating and the place is surrounded by cute kitty cats. For those two reasons, I shall award the cafe an additional one-half star. This is not a destination restaurant, but it's an okay option if you limit your order to the burger, a cup of soup, and a slice of that phenomenal chocolate sheet cake. I should note that I have yet to visit for dinner service, so maybe the pot roast and meat loaf entrees would win me over. Perhaps one day an enterprising young chef will settle in Castroville and launch a world-class restaurant focusing on elevated, modern takes of Alsatian favorites such as flammekueche, fleschnacka, or bretzel. Until that day arrives, locals and visitors alike will have to settle with ho-hum places like Castroville Cafe. read more

Lunch visit during our excursion to one of my favorite cities. We ordered a turkey sandwich and a Henri Castro. (I ordered the Henri Castro by pronouncing the name in French and our cute waitress did not understand me. lol) The order came out very quickly. The tortila soup was hot, cheesy and delicious. It's been a long while since the last time my wife and I were here. The Castroville Cafe is really a charming place, located in what used to be an old house. Very nicely decorated inside and out. The food is what you come for and not the ambiance but it's really nice when the two work so well together. My wife and I shared a sandwich called the Rachel, sliced turkey, coleslaw, Swiss cheese and thousand island dressing on toasted rye. Now I'll be honest here, that first bite of the sandwich was good but I thought it was a little sweet for me. I think it just surprised me a little bit, I wasn't expecting that and I don't know why, it plainly said it has coleslaw and thousand island dressing. Well that sandwich was delicious. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also had a cup of chicken tortilla soup with the sandwich. You wouldn't think that would be a good soup and sandwich combination but you would be wrong. The soup was homemade and it was also super flavorful. My wife had the potato salad for her side and she really enjoyed it. It can seem a little pricey, but you won't feel that way after you taste the food. The waitstaff was very attentive and they couldn't have been nicer. Even the people seated around us were talking about how good the food was. If it's a nice day, sit outside on the front porch and people watch. If it's cool outside they'll even bring you a blanket. One of the better experiences we had in Castroville. This place was adorable, and very inviting. It felt like Sunday meals at grandmas. The prices were great, and the service was what you would expect. It was like a relative was attending to you. The food was all very well cooked and came out faster than we expected. My wife had the tortilla soup. FINALLY a place that makes it right. I had tomato basil, not as good as the tortilla soup, but by no means bad. The pluses- The lasagna,pasta salad, schnitzel, mashed potatoes, kettle chips, peach tea, lemonade, and the bread were spectacular. The maybe misses? Well the burger my son had was actually very under seasoned, which was surprising considering how well all the other dishes were seasoned. It was still good, just looked better than it actually tasted. The star of the show for us was desert. We ordered pecan cobbler with ice cream...one of the greater desserts we've ever had. I just love coming to this beautiful old house turned restaurant! It's quiet and cozy, perfect for a relaxing afternoon lunch. I've been here a couple of times already and the food is wonderful. It's nothing fancy, just some delicious comfort food. I love the soups, the quiche, pasta salad, also the sandwiches are delicious. Definitely check their hours to make sure they are open before you go. There have been a couple of times they were closed when business hours said they were open. This little cafe is so cozy and country chic. It sits in the middle of historic downtown Castroville and is so charming. My mom, 4 year old son and I went on a cold winter day and found the food to be delicious. I ordered a hot sandwich and the loaded potato soup. The soup was spectacular! And the sandwich did not disappoint. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because the soup and sandwich came out to $14 and they had no kids meal options for my son. He ordered a grilled cheese with chips and that came out to nearly $11. I know times are tough, but the prices were a little steep. This is a charming little cafe at the corner of Alamo and Lafayette across the street from the Henri Castro monument and Texas state historical marker. We came on a Sunday based on Yelp reviews. It is definitely five stars! The hospitality and service from Connie was great. So nice and attentive. Frequent refills of iced tea on this hot summer in Texas day. I think she might be the owner. She makes some if not all the food on the menu. Some of the items are better than others but overall I was satisfied with the taste and portion size. We had the mushroom, spinach, and bacon quiche, it tasted more like an omelette stuffed into a crust. Definitely dominated by the egg so I tasted little else. The pasta salad was good, with little bits of veggies mixed in a light Italian dressing. The pot roast was outstanding. The mashed potatoes, excellent. The tortilla soup, more brothy than creamy, good. The peach cobbler was good, it came out warm. The carrot cake had a body and texture more like a fruit cake. It was definitely good but not the best carrot cake I have had. The soft serve ice cream was good, but cobbler this good deserves a scoop of Blue Bell. We live in Castroville, been here for 8 yrs and never went to Castroville Cafe. It was Sunday a little after 2, not many customers. We were seated in the back, like most restaurants in Castroville it's a old house and really what a beauty! Our waitress came about 3 mins later and took our drink order, there was another table by us with 3 people, so the waitress was attending to them. About 4 mins later our drinks came out. Really we couldn't decide on what to order, but everything sounded good, plus it was a bigger menu then we expected. After about 5 minutes our waitress took our order. About maybe 5 mins later our food came out. Mine came with potato salad that looked at tasted as though they just made it fresh, Mine was the Henri Castro sandwich simple turkey with bacon and cheddar cheese but was really good! My husband had the Alsation and said it was some of the best sauerkraut he's ever had and he had coleslaw with pineapple added. I usually get the Landmark sandwich (delicious !) with Strawberry Delight (blast from the past jello type salad) as my side. Mark usually gets the quiche of the day which is always good.
