We worked with Catalyst on a full kitchen renovation and had a really positive experience. Jess was our project manager and was great to work with--super responsive and kept things moving smoothly. The finished kitchen looks amazing, and we're so happy with how it turned out. We did run into a few issues with subcontractors (probably par for the course, but it was our first major renovation so they caught us a bit off guard). That said, Catalyst always had our back. It was, actually, sort of a dream working with Catalyst. It took us forever to finalize what we actually wanted to do, but they were keen to work with us, within our budget, and aligning with our design personalities and functionality needs. Jess Jackson, our project manager, was super on top of things, super friendly, and generally a joy to work with. Our handyman Devon was personable, capable, respectful, and pleasant as well. When things changed in our design plans, they were quick to offer options. They worked around our at home work schedules and were as non-disruptive as possible when they were here. They respected our pet's space and ensured they were closing doors and taking all precautions. Honestly, I don't think we could have had a better contractor situation for our small project. We used Catalyst to completely remodel both bathrooms to fix issues created by our former contractor and to change out all interior doors in our house. This was our third engagement with a contractor to do major work on our house, and Catalyst was BY FAR the most professional, organized, and transparent. I was most impressed by the team's attention to detail as I had high expectations with our bathroom redos (after only five years from a previous remodel). In addition to ensuring that all work was code-compliant, I was most particular about the tile work, which included terrazzo tile flooring, and the team exceeded my expectations. If I expressed any concern about an item, it was corrected quickly. I had a challenging time locating a contractor with transparent pricing, but with Catalyst's bid, I could see - line by line - the cost associated with each item, which I appreciated. Their pricing is competitive and very fair for the quality of work that is delivered. Just a couple of months after finishing our bathrooms and doors, we rehired Catalyst to do some framing/drywall/paint work for our primary bedroom closet. The good news is that you can stop searching now: you've found your people at Catalyst Construction. My wife and I recently worked with Catalyst and hired them on to renovate our home (kitchen remodel, bathroom remodel, installation of flooring, installation of ceiling fans and lighting, redesign of a laundry room, floor tiling). Throughout the process, they were communicative and direct with us about our hopes and goals for the project and the timeline for it, as well. Based on past experience with other contractors, we were always surprised that they responded to our questions in a timely fashion, offering guidance and advice as best as was available. They stuck to their original timeline well and came in within the budget projected. For context, we were the absolute worst customers we could be, continuously requesting small changes and asking for emendations to the original bid. They not only accommodated our requests but often made suggestions about how best to pursue our requests. We retained Catalyst to complete an extensive repair and remodel project. To make matters more complicated, we would be managing the project from out of state and looking to list the house for sale in time for a Spring listing. We needed a lot done. We needed it done on-time and on-budget. We braced ourselves for a challenging fall/winter while the work was completed, but the work could not have gone more smoothly. From the first meeting with the business owner (Jason) and our project manager (Jess), we were impressed with the level of professionalism compared to other contractors we met. That level of professionalism, coupled with the quality of workmanship from the trades and responsiveness of our PM, continued throughout the project. We received regular communication and updates and photos of the progress. We knew exactly what was happening on site each day. When hiccups happened, as they will, they were few and far between. In each case, our PM was quick to alert us and address the matter to our satisfaction. We did a kitchen remodel selecting UB Kitchens for our cabinets. After talking with several contractors that UB Kitchen customers had recommended we decided to go with Catalyst Construction as our general contractor. It started with Alex (and Max) coming out and looking at our project. Not only were we going to do the kitchen but also new hardwood flooring through out our house, new lighting and some other electrical updates. They took detailed measurements and pictures to reference. Alex delivered us a detailed estimate with each cost as a line item. There was nothing hidden and due to the experience they have there were no issues that came up that increased the cost. We added a couple things along the way and those were the only things that added to the initial estimate. Alex worked with UB Kitchens to make sure everything was perfect for them to install the cabinets and that the time line was in sink with UB. Once everything started Alex and or Max would meet with each crew and make sure everything with the job was understood. Work was checked during and at the completion of each job. If anything needed to be addressed it was handled quickly and correctly. Each of the crews were extremely talented, helpful and respectful. Along the way we were having a hard time selecting our countertop. Alex really helped us with this. Ultimately steering us in the direction of a countertop that we love and that was in our price range. I would also like to add that I know we were a small project based on the size of our house, but Alex and Max made us feel like we were top priority. We are so happy with the final outcome we dont think we could have chosen a better company to work with. After moving into the house we purchased two years ago, we began to think of the many ways we wanted to refresh and personalize the interior without actually changing the floor plan. It became overwhelming to think about what to do first and how to coordinate all of the improvements (flooring, painting, kitchen and bath remodels, lights and fans, etc.), so we started looking for a contractor who could do that for us. After quite a bit of searching, we called Catalyst (heard their ad on KUT). Jessica came out and went through the whole house with us, taking notes and photos and listening to our needs, and followed up with an itemized proposal of the work to be done. Soon the work began (we had to move out first), and the rest of the team (Jake, Alex, Jason, and many others) began on time, with a schedule for the entire project. I won't say it was stress-free (we didn't expect it to be), but they were able to find solutions for any snags that came up, and the project was finished on time and with beautiful results. I am so happy with all the work Jason and Catalyst Construction completed in my home. I purchased new kitchen cabinets from UB Kitchens and needed a contractor for the demo. They provided me with a list of contractors that their customers recommended and Catalyst Construction was on the list. I could not have had a better remodeling experience from start to finish! Beginning with caring customer service, and great communication to honesty and quality workmanship. I decided my 80's condo needed more than new kitchen cabinets so besides the kitchen demo, I contracted Catalyst to remove old laminate flooring and install new vinyl Coretec throughout my entire first floor. They installed a new Shaker style bi fold pantry, hallway and bathroom door and added all new hardware and baseboard moldings. Catalyst installed new recessed lighting, a pendant in the dining room and updated all electrical and light switches throughout. They did plumbing work in the bathroom, laundry room and kitchen and removed popcorn ceiling and painted all walls, doors and trim. They removed old tile surrounding my fireplace and installed new stone and kitchen tile backsplash. I was impressed by the great communication we had throughout the project. Jason and Casey made it very easy to contact them via text, email and phone. Their responses were always timely, courteous and professional. Since I decided to leave and stay with family in MD during the reno, they would send photos through the process which was very exciting! Catalyst also was very timely in organizing and coordinating with Joe at UB Kitchens and Nathan at GNS Stoneworks. They made a great team. Jason was helpful, easy to work with, and is a perfectionist with a great eye for detail. I didn't think about replacing the old ceiling registers and AC return air vent grill but those finishing touches really made a difference. I showed him a picture of beadboard paneling for my kitchen and he created the perfect match. He created a new HVAC door that opens without using a doorknob and painted it the same as the wall color so it blends into the wall and is not as noticeable. I appreciated the detailed written estimate I was given and thrilled that my project was completed within my planned budget and finished before the expected completion date! I highly recommend Catalyst Construction for their caring, personal service and quality workmanship. It was a pleasure to work with honest, professional, nice people. We had Jason and his crew remodel our downstairs. This project included painting all the walls, putting in new laminate flooring, remodeling the kitchen counters and installation of quartz counter tops, adding cabinets and shelves to our existing cabinets, tile in the laundry room, and installing new lighting. Jason was very professional and had excellent customer service. He answered every email, phone call, and text. His brother did much of the physical work, doing a great job and very nice to work with. They finished the job in a reasonable amount of time, working hard to coordinate the labor so we were not out of a kitchen or livable home for any long periods of time. We are very pleased with the work the Box brothers did in our home. When Jason came out to work up an estimate he gave honest opinions when she asked for them about the design/materials and gave a very fair price. She opted to go with Catalyst Construction because Jason was so pleasant and professional. Without an ounce of sleazy salesmanship, he just seemed trustworthy and patient. Jason's crews tiled the backsplash in the kitchen, with the materials Mom picked out, and a design she showed them. They painted the old wood paneling in several rooms. Painted the kitchen cabinets, repaired laminate flooring, and tore down an old sun room off the back of the house. They also did small repairs throughout the house. We've had the privilege in hiring & working with Jason Box and the Catalyst Construction team on 4 separate projects: -creating entrance to our media room from living room, installing tile flooring; -kitchen facelift; -home paint job; and -a complete rebuild/remodel of home after flooding. Our home flooded this August and it completely devastated our little family of 4. In working with the insurance company, mortgage company, property adjusters, water mitigation, plumbers, temporary housing - my husband were left exhausted...completely exhausted. We were so satisfied with the results that when we decided to remodel the entire upstairs this summer, we went with Catalyst. This review is an update from one I wrote in 2012 (which ended up in the not recommended category for some reason - please read that review, too). In the fall of 2012, we hired Catalyst Construction to completely gut and renovate a condominium in which our three children had lived while they attended UT. The place was in terrible shape, with the original fixtures, etc combined with the kind of neglect that happens when college students and their room-mates inhabit a place. At the time of the renovation we kept the oven; it was fairly new. However, we thought we might want to replace the oven at some point with a slide in oven, so we asked Jason to cut a piece of granite we used for the kitchen counters for future use, when we decided to purchase the new oven. Jason had the granite guys cut a piece of granite and left it for us to use as needed. Late February this year we purchased a slide-in oven. I called Jason and asked if he could send someone out to cut and install the granite. This request might seem simple, but at the time we requested the job, our daughter was expecting baby at any time. I was spending my days in S Austin helping care for her toddler sons so that I would be available when she went into labor. I explained to Jason that I couldn't promise I'd be at the condo when the men arrived, if our daughter happened to be in labor the day of the appointment. He was so pleasant and understood completely; in fact, he told me that he'd have his guys call ahead and give me thirty minutes notice so that I could leave from my daughter's house and meet them at the condo. That way I would be away from my daughter's house only as long as it took for the guys to get the job done. The men Jason sent worked quickly. They even leveled the oven for us (which we hadn't done since we really couldn't install it properly until we had the granite cut). I recommend Jason and Catalyst Construction to everyone I know in Austin, in case they ever need even the smallest construction job done. I only wish he worked in San Antonio, so he could do the work we'd like done on our house there. We contracted Catalyst to do a mix of work that included structural work as well as cosmetic. I was initially very impressed. The walk through was quick, Jason seemed to have a good grasp of the work scope. There were a number of issues I wanted, some enhancement work and a reinforcement of some open trusses supporting the second floor. It took a while to work through the contract and price. Frankly I felt like the original number I got was fair, but every time we talked about other items, the price grew geometrically, ultimately leading to a proposed quote of four hundred dollars to paint a 3x4 closet. We came to a final scope and number that I thought was fair. Some of the work was high, but some low, so I felt it all balanced out. I'm not parsimonious, I' understand that everyone needs to make a buck. Work started a couple of weeks later and the first day of work, the project went off the rails. I met Jason at the house, we talked and I left for work. Only an hour later, I received a call from Jason saying they would not do the structural work but would be happy to do the rest of the work. And if I didn't want them to do that, they were leaving. I guess I felt like I'd been fallen for the old bait and switch. I felt the pricing on the structural work was a little low, but the pricing we agreed to on the painting and so on, was high, so it all worked out. In my mind, without the structural work, the price was extremely high. He told me they were leaving because his crew did not believe the structural fix would work. Let me back up. The structural work was examined and recommended by a licensed engineer(structural). The engineer's report identified the issue, (nothing too massive), and how it might be corrected. Catalyst both read the report and had conversations with the engineer long before they started work, before signing any agreements. Jason and I had conversations as well, and there seemed to be no issue with the work that was to be done, up until the day work started. It took a couple of weeks to resolve that issue and frankly, I should have walked away at that point. The final agreement was to accept the work without warranty with the proviso that I was allowed to inspect the structural work in progress. Once work started again, I got a call from Jason saying they were doing the structural work. Unfortunately, by the time I arrived at the house, the crew was ready to pull out of the driveway. I was not able to see the level, etc. to my satisfaction. Ultimately, I felt I made a poor decision and the work fell short. Today, six months or so later, the stain on the refinished staircase is literally rubbing off, the crown molding is separating. Why two stars you might be asking... well, there were things I felt they did well too. In fact, they even fixed an issue that wasn't their responsibility.
