I have been riding my 2016 Yamaha YZF-R1M since I bought the bike, in May of 2018. I haven't done anything but change sprockets, chain, tires, brake pads, cooler radiator fluid, 2 brake flushes, and I'm on them killer sportmax Q4's. I noticed a clicking in my front end thought It was the full floating brake setup, but I've noticed the zip ties on my fork tubes were at the bottom out point, so I looked up some YouTube tidbits and found that I need to set the static sag on this $8,000 ohlins suspension electronic. I was going to do it myself and was getting the tool at Cycle Gear SF, when the guy that works there with the 2017 black R6, Dan, told me about Catalyst Reaction in San Carlos. Google and called, and in 2 hours I'm back in Cycle Gear SF with my mind blown. For $40 I got: 1) the static sag on my bike set at about 35 mm with an empty tank. 2) Jim the mechanic went through all my modes ABCD and set the suspension settings for each one. 3) he explained a little bit but he showed me more by make changing the settings and bouncing the bike while I was on it and I can feel the difference, so now I know what subtle differences these clicks do make. Actually the settings -1 - 2 - 3 and so on is what I'm talking about. 4) he noticed that my front end of (steering stem) was loose and tightened it in 30 seconds FREE. Why da F@#k did I not know about this kick a$$ shop earlier. I thought that Catalyst was for suspension work only but it turns out they can do anything/everything to your bike. Their attention to detail is beyond amazing and greater than the detail level an owner gives their own bike. Read: this is not the kind of shop that has a bucket full of leftover screws; each screw/bolt/bracket etc will be put back on your bike in the manner it was taken off. When I went to pick up my bike after a major service I was told that "Jeff" went through and made sure most bolts were tightened to spec as he had found a few loose ones... To top that my kickstand rubbed against the belly pad on my full carbon bodywork which I was used to; wrong answer... Jeff insisted on making a bracket to fix this problem. [ Thanks Jeff!!! ] I wanted a quote that was true to my final costs as I hate surprises when picking up something from service. Nickie worked with me to determine the worst case and best case scenario. I did not feel nickeled or dimed and was happy she stood her ground, for me as the customer, when she was asked to add an additional charge to my bill when some time was spent fixing something that bothered Jeff about my bike that was above and beyond. Learned about this shop after watching a youtube video from a fellow FZ-09 owner. The fz-09 is an awesome motorcycle with a not so awesome suspension. I bought the bike last week and was told by the dealer that the stock adjustment should be fine for someone my size. FALSE. The dealer is either stupid, lazy, or both. Anyways. I put a call into Jim and Nikki to have my suspension adjusted. I was running late and turned up to their shop 10 mins before 5pm. I was expecting to be turned away but instead Jim dropped what he was working on and came out to adjust my bike! I stopped writing Yelp reviews for a long time but the experience at CRST was so amazing that I just had to do one for them. I recently got into motorcycles and developed an addiction for it. It's been less than a year and I'm already on my second sport bike LOL. Like most people I usually start out with modifications like frame sliders, exhausts, ECU flash, etc. Then I got to thinking...what are some things I could do to my bike to improve my riding?? Per multiple online forums, I saw that suspension tuning was at the top of the list. Many people raved that suspension tuning makes a big difference so that was enough to persuade me. As a rookie, I never rode a bike with a tuned suspension...so I never really knew what I was missing out on. Honestly, I just assumed all the ball-busting bumps on 880 couldn't be avoided and that the gods created the pot holes on 880 to punish us motorcyclists lollll! Anyways, I think I'm diverging from the point of this review. Now that I knew I wanted to get my suspension tuned, I needed to figure out who to get it done by. After some online searching, most people were recommending CRST. I called them the day before to ask some questions. They gave me a heads up to check their schedule or give them call prior to coming in because on some business days, they're closed to attend track days/racing events. I didn't schedule an appointment because I really wasn't sure when I could come in. I can't speak for how busy it might be on a weekend but when I did a drop-in on Tuesday, it looked like I was the only customer there (awesome!). They were very professional and quick to help me! They got my bike on a stand within just a few minutes after arriving. They worked their magic, had me sit on the bike, and within 10 minutes I was ready to test ride around the block. I was surprised that they were willing to just let me ride around prior to paying. But it just shows how committed they are to making sure that I'm satisfied with my settings before I leave. So when I went out onto the streets to test my bike, I was in awe! It was a night and day difference from the stock settings! I couldn't believe it and I'm not even exaggerating my review. My bike felt more nimble on the turns which got me excited for next weekend's twisties. Normally, when I see a bump up ahead, I somewhat brace myself for it....legs squeezing the tank and arms relaxed so my arms and torso don't absorb the impact. As I was bracing myself, my bike just rolled over the bump like it was made of pillows... Interesting right? Yeah ok CRST, you can take all my money now ($40 in this case). read more

I was directed here by searching around the Bay Area Riders Forum (BARF) for suspension shops near me (southern part of Peninsula). While many folks on BARF mentioned that Dave Moss was the reason they went here (I believe he has since left to work on his own?) many people also sang praises for Jim so I felt comfortable bringing my motorcycle nonetheless. I am a returning rider who would still self-classify as a novice, and I had bought a used SV650 off of Craigslist about a month ago. While the previous owner did not himself mod it (that's what he said, and based on his general knowledge and disposition I believe him) the owner before him did. There was a swapped and very stiff rear shock and a stiffer front fork than I'd expect from a stock SV650 (somewhat notorious for having an overly plush stock setup in terms of front and rear spring rate). I had narrowed down the type of shock which was swapped doing some basic research online (08-09 GSX-R600/750), found that the spring rate for the spring was suitable for a rider roughly 60 pounds heavier than me! I intuited that the front fork was also probably set up for a similarly heavy rider. I was dreading having to either swap out the rear shock or re-spring it, as well as re-spring the front fork. The costs I was finding online for such services was more than I'd have liked to spend on fixing up a relatively budget used motorcycle. I brought my motorcycle to CRS to get Jim's opinion and was very impressed by his knowledge and general kind demeanor. He was able to identify the motorcycle the swapped shock likely came from almost instantly, and after some general diagnostic tests (checking sag for my weight, pushing down on the bike in various ways) figured that the front had stiffer springs installed with 15wt oil and cartridge emulators. He was also very willing to field all of my questions which was reassuring. He suggested I get the rear shock re-sprung and shortening the preload spacer of the front fork. Since the work on the fork was substantially simpler than a full re-spring the cost he quoted me came out to roughly half what I had expected (well... dreaded) going in! Even better yet when I came to pick up the bike he actually had a used shock spring in the shop with the appropriate spring rate which then cut the final bill even more. This post came out long but I felt it was warranted, but I'll summarize below. TL;DR: Great shop overall, Jim is definitely very knowledgeable about suspension tuning and very willing to pass on some of his wisdom if you ask. I never felt that they were trying to price gouge me by recommending work that didn't need to be done. No complaints at all! read more

Walked in on a Saturday afternoon and asked if they could get spark arrestors installed on my kids dirt bikes. They where Very helpful and knowledgeable to give me advice on what to do as well as recommend me to a local shop that was able to help us get them installed. Wonderful people, awesomely knowledgeable, and incredibly fair. Today was my first experience with Jim & Nickie and I wish I was saying that 20 years ago when I moved to CA. They installed new Carbon Fiber wheels/Pirelli tires on my Ducati 899 Panigale, set up the suspension & clip-ons and checked/torqued everything to make sure I'm good to go for the first track day of the season. The bill was fair to the point that I actually felt the urge to question whether they hadn't accidentally left something off! I had a really bad experience with these guys. I took my cbr600rr in to get the suspension set up for my weight and change the oil in the front forks. Okay simple job I thought, and these guys have great reviews. They replaced the springs and changed the oil in a few hours while I went go karting at go kart racer. I came back and the guy told me they: -Scratched my upper fairing and he put touch up paint on it. (looks like an ugly dug in spot now) -Broke metal tab where the lower fender bolt screws into and used jb weld to glue it back on. He blamed this on the fact that the bolt was on there too tight and that he had to drill out. -Setup the weight of the bike without me there with someone that looked my size at their shop. I paid my $ but was rather upset at the fact that he didn't even offer to fix any of the damage to my bike and didn't seem to care to make it perfect. The suspension did seem much better setup but then I was riding a few days after I noticed some sort of rattling noise coming from the front. After another few rides I noticed there was a missing bolt on the lower triple tee clamp and the other bolt was completely loosened out! That is super dangerous and I can not believe that they did not tighten it back up properly after servicing my forks. I am also glad I found the loosened and missing bolts as I am sure this could have caused a crash. I will never go back to this shop again and am very dissatisfied with the work they did. read more

Anyone who knows motorcycles will acknowledge that the SV650 has a garbage suspension setup. I took it to Jim and got emulators + a Nitron rear shock. Once parts had arrived, the work was quickly accomplished and the bike was revolutionized. I also took my Aprilia RSVR Factory to Jim and he dialed it in for me quickly and cheaply. There prices are extremely reasonable for what they provide: Expertise of the equipment Knowledge of the tracks Safety in knowing I am completely setup In the insatiable search for speed, safety, handling and, ultimately, lower lap times, the suspension hardware is only part of the equation. Catalyst Reaction Tuning, fills in the missing variables which is proper setup. Proper setup ultimately results in improved feel of the motorcycle (whether on the track or off) and confidence in your own abilities. A proper setup suspension also saves tire, ultimately money in the bank. A lot of suspension experts, i won't name names, treat technical neophytes or laymans like idiots. that's not the case with Dave Moss, he's a patient teacher that will take the time, if you are a willing student, to teach and improve your suspension comprehension. read more

I consider myself still a new rider as I only ride on the weekends and have probably on put down less than 2000 miles over a span of 2 years. I heard many things about Catalyst Reaction and decided to make an appointment. I emailed their contact information on the page and promptly received an email back from Nickie. We exchanged a couple of emails and she called me to confirm my appointment that weekend. I arrived 10 minutes early and saw a couple of riders who were finishing up. Talked to Jim about motorcycles and everything else in between while he worked on tuning the suspension of my 2005 gsxr 600. He was easy going and the end result was perfect. He adjusted the front and rear suspension to my weight while i sat on the bike and tinkered for a bit. Checked my air pressure and when he was done told me to take a ride around the block. He made sure to tell me about the bumpy road so i can test out the new suspension. It made a big difference and the bike felt completely different. About 40min of his time talking and wrenching, 30min round trip ride, and $40 made my bike ride much better. I would most definitely come back for more of Jim and Nickie's services.
