I'd recommend Catch to anyone who is looking for a serious relationship, so if you're still in a transactional mode it may not be for you. May and her crew of matchmakers set you up for success by meeting with you so they can get a good sense of who you are and what you're looking for. They will then hire a photographer so you can look your best to potential matches. They do a good job pairing you up with dates that seem suited to you. And they give you excellent feedback on the dates based on input from the other party. It's a process that usually gets refined as you go and the matches get more and more on point. I caught them at a time when one of the matchmakers was leaving but May did a great job making it as seamless as possible. I don't tend to get to personal when writing a review, I rather state facts and let readers figure it out. My experience might not be the same as someone else. First, let me start by acknowledging that they are very professional as far as business conduct goes. I have met and spoken with some female matchmakers that were snobby and superficial. They are not like that at all. You might be disappointed with your selection of men if you are looking for a Tom Hiddleston type who looks good in a skinny suit, but that is the point. They don't only cater to certain types, they serve everyone. I think of it as a positive, however it can be a negative depending of what you are looking for. My stars are based on this: The first profile they sent me was of a man who said "Must Eat Meat" as he was a cook. This was clearly stated in his profile. My profile states that I am a strict vegetarian. So I am not sure how they deduced we would be a match. I declined. The next match I was sent a guy who was almost 10 years past my age requirements. The above was quite annoying as it felt the same as when guys with online dating don't pay attention to what you are looking for. You know, you get excited because you have an email from someone, then when you read it it is disappointing because it was a waste. After pointing this out, I was told I needed to update my photos since they were 4 years old. However, I had only signed up with them last year. After bringing this to their attention I was told they got me mixed up with someone else. At that point I asked to see my profile PDF. I had sent them newer photos and updated my location in April and wanted to make sure they had the right person. When I took a look, I was horrified to see that my personal info that I shared in my "about me" where you submit on their website was listed in the PDF. Specifically, the name of the company I own. Luckily, since I had declined my profile wasn't sent to anyone, or so I was told. This is something to be aware of when concerned about privacy. Therefore, minus 3 stars. I received a profile last night who was within the age limit and area, but I wasn't interested as I have begun seeing someone completely discovered away from this service. I encourage others to read the positive reviews before writing off this service because my issues might have been simple oversights based on what kind of day someone was having. I recently went to a matchmaking gathering in MDR. The welcome when I arrived from one of the matchmakers was less than stellar, not much of a smile, poor eye contact. More importantly, the event itself was poorly put together, in that jumping (as a man anyway) from woman to woman every five minutes was not ...in many instances to make an intelligent decision as to whether the person in front of you was ...a potential date going forward?? Sure, there were times from a pure appearance standpoint when the gal was not my type/of interest, and the timeline was effectual. At the end, there were no indications (or at the beginning as well) as to what happened next. In other words, was it acceptable to go downstairs and find someone you might be interested in and buy her a drink? etc. The protocol, was completely anyone's guess, and since all the gals that were upstairs were gone post haste....there was not much left to do. Subsequent to the gathering I was provided with a list of gals who were interested, which ended up being a hit and miss scenario without going into detail. As a business owner, with a few simple revisos, this could be a much better and useful event, perhaps even a lot of fun:)) read more

Have been on three dates now after asking a few times over the last couple months. Haven't heard from them in a while but honestly have been busy. Each date worse than the last, I don't know what they were thinking with the last guy (actually, they couldn't have been thinking on that one). But, I got some feedback that I need good pictures. So I finally got some done this weekend and hopefully they will turn out good, and then magically my dating life will take off. They have these mixers and I'm not available for many due to work. I met with Mai about a year ago. I had what I thought was a good meeting. She mistook what I said and thought that I had wanted the ladies to pay for meeting me, which was not the case. She took my profile and questions and I never heard from her again. I want everyone to know that this is a business. They are using a business model. Including different demographics to calculate their equation. I didn't fit into this model. They do organize their events pretty well. They try to match you as well as they can with their limited database (which does include MEETUP groups). But make no mistake, their main goal is to make money. If you don't understand this going in, you don't understand business. While the review I am writing is not entirely negative;its more informational. YOU will find a rebuttal response from one of the owners. The rebuttal is cleverly worded to make it seem like either I am the one who is at fault for not meeting my match or they did their best and there just wasn't anyone who was a "Match" for me. They might offer me or you a free or not free invitation to one of their events to seem as if they are trying to make amends for how or what I might have not liked about their service. Make NO mistake this is a business. It is quite pricey....... and you will be handled like the product or commodity of which you might or might not be for this business. Know this going in and you will be fine. If you don't know this, you know it now and have no excuse to complain about wasting you're time and\or money. Also realize that Yelp reviews can and have been skewed by the Business owners friends or have been solicited by their patrons as such. Don't be fooled by this as well. Read all the reviews very carefully and choose the ones that seem the most earnest. I personally was tossed aside, I was not going to make them money. That being said, they might find you valuable and marketable and find what you are looking for....... My experience with this service was impersonal an unsuccessful. I had met with May a few years back and after talking with her I was so excited about their service. When the time was right for me, I called the service last fall and it took several calls on my part to even get a call back. From there, I was told that they didn't need to meet with me, which felt very impersonal. It had been years since I had met with May. I was going to them because I wanted someone to match me from my personality, not from a few general commonalities on a piece of paper. I insisted that they meet with me. It was a lot of small things that kept making the service feel so impersonal. I would make a phone call and it would be answered with an email that moved forward and didn't speak to my question. I dated a man in the service for a few months, and when I called the service when I was ready to start dating again, I simply received an email with a new profile. No follow up, no inquiry into whether I had learned anything that would help them with their next search or to inquire if I was interested in dating they same type of person. A simple ten-minute phone call is all I was expecting. When I did get someone on the phone it ended up coming out how soon after the break up that he went back to the service. (Information I really wish I didn't know) The final date didn't go well for me and I let them know that I was not interested in going on another date with him. He ended up calling me several days later and I had to tell it to him myself. These are all small minor things, but they started to compound. I'm disappointed because I want to keep going with this type of service because I think it works well for me, but I will be looking at a different company at this point. read more

It's been quite a while since I met with May and had my experience with Catch Matchmaking. When I first found the website and spoke to May on the phone, I was very hopeful. I'd been single for quite some time and was in my forties so I was looking for some way to meet men without having to hang out at bars. When I met with May she asked, as I would imagine most matchmaking services do, what I was looking for. I thought our meeting went well and she understood who I was and what I was looking for. After our meeting she sent me ONE profile. The man she sent me was 7 years older than me and he looked it. Even though his "profile" said he liked outdoor activities like hiking and biking, he looked very out of shape to me. He had grown children and was not interested in having children. He was a smoker. Aside from we both grew up in Southern California and liked concerts, I didn't see that we had much in common. I responded to May and let her know I was not interested in him. Thinking this was the first profile, I assumed she would send more ... wrong! I even emailed her several times after that initial profile and asked when I could expect more profiles and while she responded she never sent me anymore profiles. At our meeting, May had told me about their mixers and I did attend some but honestly I had gone to the same things with Meet Up groups and other singles groups - the types of things I was trying to avoid. I was hoping to be "matched" by this matchmaking company but that did not happen. I was extremely disappointed and would never recommend Catch Matchmaking to anyone. As a side note at the end of our initial (and only) meeting, I told May that I had several friends close to my age (most younger) who were in the same position as me and I told her I would refer them to her. She asked, in a discreet way, were they overweight. She did not use those words but I knew what she meant. While I understand men are visual you can't rule people out. read more

Here's the real deal: if you hire a matchmaker, you are trusting the most important relationship of your life (don't kid yourself--that is what it is) to somebody, so you better trust the individual. May, aka the owner, is someone you can trust. My story basically goes like this: I have used May's service twice (repeat customer...), and she personally managed my "account" if you will, including listening very carefully to what I wanted, which was a considerably fussy list. I have been on about 7 or 8 dates she arranged after combing through at least 20+ potential ladies. Every one of them was compelling, and of the ones I chose to go on dates with, none were real surprises and all were quality people, which of course I knew ahead of time. I am now seeing one of these people, and let me tell you she is pretty awesome. Why do you want to do this? Because bars are drunken falsehoods, online is playing needle in a haystack, and you're tired of your Mom making introductions. And no, it is not like that TV show or the Its Just Lunch ad you read on the Southwest flight. It's seriously caring people who can introduce you to seriously quality mates that you get to pick. What you do with it from there is of course up to you, but I can promise you that if you're good to May and her people, and you're fair to the people you do and don't like that you meet, you'll definitely be very, very glad you spent the money with her. She'll find you your someone, and they will be awesome. If you're a guy, understand that May and her team are out there holding singles events, going to art openings, and generally hunting seriously quality single women. They are fishing in the pond for you, in low-pressure situations. Recognize that really quality women don't need or want bars, match.com, or their roommate's cousin--they get hit on at Starbucks daily. They have a clear sense of what they want, and May is basically asking them: "are you tired of dating people who bore you or trying to judge a book by its cover? Let me help you figure that one out, possibly for free." And every attractive single woman likes the sound of that, coming from another woman. So look gentlemen, if that is in fact what you are, give May a call and find out that there are a dozen amazing, successful single women she will introduce you to if you're prepared to treat them properly. All the great reviews made me hopeful, but after filling out the questionnaire and getting one email about how they'll let me know if someone comes up and then not hearing anything at all has really left me feeling disappointed. It's hard to write a completely unbiased review of a company that helped you find your husband-to-be, but I will try. Catch offers matchmaking and singles mixers. I was not a huge fan of the singles mixers because I'm just not a fan of mixers in general. The events were well planned though. As far as the matchmaking element, I found it very appealing. I could always rely on the matchmakers to set me up with kind gentlemen who I would meet for appetizers or lunch. All the men I met through Catch were very nice, though none were a real fit until I met my current fiancé. There is some reassurance in knowing that you can provide feedback to the matchmakers. Dating in LA has made me realize that people can be very weird on first dates. Knowing that I could provide feedback following a date made me feel a lot more comfortable going on a blind date with someone. The accountability on both ends facilitated an honest communication between me and my dates. Also knowing that they were doing a background check on the men, also eased some of my fears as well. The advice the matchmakers provided to others through their website and to me and my fiancé (which he disclosed to me later) was a mixed bag to be honest, but most of it was helpful to us in my opinion. One of the things they suggested to both of us was to keep an open mind in people you are set up with, which I thought was good advice. There were many men I was set up with, that I would not have otherwise gone out with for various reason, but was usually happy I agreed to meet with them after the first date for different reasons. Another was to not dismiss someone because of where they live, which is also something I am grateful for as John (my fiancé) and I live an hour away from each other on opposite ends of the county. However, I disagreed with the feedback that he received about not discussing some of his more personal details (ex-wife, kids, job, etc.) because other women had been uncomfortable with it. Honestly, I was grateful he talked to me about it because I am just as honest about my imperfect life and want to know what I would be signing on to if I were to pursue a relationship with someone. I found John's honesty with his life experience on our first date refreshing to be honest. I understand how other women were put off by it and thankfully so! John is truly a wonderful man and I am so grateful we found each other. And I would not have met him, were it not for the matchmakers, as our paths would very unlikely have crossed in any other way. Overall, the matchmakers were very kind and really seemed to want to do their job well--which is help you find a partner. What a great job! And they definitely succeeded with me. My life changed in such a positive way when I met John and it couldn't have happened without Catch. I would (and do) recommend Catch to my friends. I'm not a huge fan of dating agencies. However, getting to know May and working with her, I kind of changed my mind. She has no problems telling clients what to wear, giving suggestions on places to take my dates, and giving me feedback after each date. If you are waiting for them to host a bunch of 45+ singles mixers, you are out of luck. They specialize in one on one matchmaking for us older folks! I wish they would have more singles events for us old folks. All their events are for the 20's and 30's mainly. That's ok, I guess. May and Katie took the time to interview and get to know me at a Starbucks for over two hours, which really allowed them to dig into who I was as a person, learn my personality and quirks, and really figure out what I was looking for in a partner. This allowed them to personalize the search for a great match for me. I am not the easiest guy in the world to set up (enough baggage that even Southwest Airlines would charge me for it), but their personal investment in me paid off in spades. While this won't be everyone's experience, the very first woman they set me up with turned out to be the absolutely perfect woman for me in every way. I didn't think that perfect woman for me even existed; and the odds of actually finding her if she did exist seemed too great to ponder. But May had this one woman in mind after getting to know me, and now...eight wonderful months later...I truly believe I have found my new life partner and couldn't be happier. I expected more from the services I received from Catch. After meeting with May I thought about signing up for the standard membership. The terms of the membership weren't to my satisfaction. She wanted fees paid upfront while I wanted to pay on a month-by-month basis. We came to an agreement and she started sending me profiles of women. It was difficult to get good matches. I had two first dates that did not go well. A major problem with online dating is that one doesn't know what he/she is getting into. I had envisioned that this kind of matchmaking service would be better than online dating in terms of it being more personal. In other words, the matchmaker would know both parties and thus the process would be more grounded in reality and thus lead to better results. Anyway, I expected better choices and a process that improved the chances for a successful match. My experience with Catch did not fully meet those expectations. read more

I just attended a mixer this past weekend that leaves me feeling a bit troubled. In the past 5 months or so, I've only done their 1-1 dating, which overall has been a good experience, so this was the first time I've been to an event. So it was at V-Lounge this past weekend. There were a couple of guys there I thought were great and attractive (I can't really speak to the female side of things because I didn't chat much with the women), but it was a real mixed bag for me on clientele. I thought perhaps just luck of the draw since it was a holiday weekend? I wouldn't have put TOO much stock into that - until I found out after the fact that it was several singles groups together, including a MeetUp Group. That part of it bothers me. It wasn't advertised to me that way initially, and it makes me feel uncomfortable not knowing whether or not the guests that came were either vetted by the service I'd signed up with, or at the very least, friends of those people vetted by the service. I'm not expecting a red carpet or fancy stuff like some of the other places require to be on board. But I *am* a trusting young woman showing up to a singles event - and there's no way I would have gone solo if I'd realized there were other groups involved that I'd never had any interaction with before. Call me overly cautious, but this is LA, and one experience I had with a guy a couple of years ago has made me much more cautious about stuff like this. (Once you have an experience with someone who makes you feel unsafe, you tend to take a few precautions, and I would have preferred having a girlfriend there with me throughout if I'd known.) I just assumed they were all Catch people, which I guess is my own naivete...?? The women on their staff that I've interfaced with have been super responsive and friendly to me, and I have another date coming up with someone that I am looking forward to meeting, so that part of it has been positive. Finding a partner can be a long process, especially as one has more life experience. Then the two people must not only match in aspirations but also have compatible life experiences. So I tried Catch Matchmaking because May, Sarah, Katie, Ashley and company screen people so that you meet people both seriously looking for a partner and also who have their act together to be willing to pay to have someone else facilitate it. That part is not too romantic, but it is pragmatic and saves a lot of time and hurt feelings. The service was great. It was structured and light-handed. The people I met were uniformly nice people, and I enjoyed all the dinners and walks. I don't regret meeting any one of them. The information given on each potential partner was about right (enough to get an idea, but not too much to encroach privacy). The matchmakers were always quick to respond to emails (sometime minutes or at most hours), they had post-date feedback forms to refine the search for both people. And they were hands-off once the introduction was made. They were always professional and know what they are doing. They are understated and don't try to be showy about themselves. They genuinely care about finding you potential partners. So after a long search, I have found a good match and a likely long-term partner. All credit goes to Catch Matchmaking because they stuck with it. Finding a partner can be hard. Matchmakers can only do so much to make it work out. But May, Sarah, Katie and co, diligently and carefully did all they could to make the process easy and likely to succeed. They went far beyond what was promised in the contract. After considering using a matchmaking service for some time, and doing research on Yelp and other sites, I chose to sign up with Catch. The problems women tend to have with the larger, national services (i.e. the service setting them up with men way outside of their age range, dates with men with no common interests, etc.) did not seem to be an issue with Catch. I am a fan of the screening interview process. Before I joined, I met with May for nearly an hour to talk about my history, what I was looking for and what I wasn't looking for (which is something I hadn't thought much about until she asked some pointed questions). From our first contact and going forward, May and her team were incredibly responsive and helpful. May set me up on five or so dates. All of the men were nice, polite, and interesting. Also, they met my criteria, and we had plenty in common so that there were no (or, at least, very few) awkward silences. The feedback process after the dates worked well-- both for me to receive advice on dating tips, and to give May more insight into what qualities would and wouldn't work for me. The last guy May selected for me was a good fit. Although we went out on a few dates and things were progressing well, I ended up meeting another man on a dating website and that relationship has become serious. Maybe it's shallow but I know everyone wants to know: the women were good looking. They were not fat or otherwise women who would have a hard time. I think they were there because they are looking for more quality guys rather than the "exciting guy" types. You know what I mean: all the aspiring musicians, actors, artists and people with tattoos we have here in LA. I'm not one of those exciting guy types. I'm a successful, professional guy, not in the entertainment field. This event was the right event for me. The employees of the business are very nice people , but the quality of matchmaking is extremely low. Having worked with other matchmakers in Los Angeles and San Francisco this service was disappointing. I was referred one potential match whose profile was not an accurate representation of himself. His profile stated that he was "open minded" and knowledgeable of all things but then he declined the match based on his lack of knowledge of one of my interests. It was very unprofessional. Let me start by telling you what I didn't get into: speed dating, mixers, or club events. So what's left? The core matchmaking service. As Lois and Katie soon discovered, I wasn't the easiest person to match with. Over the course of 10 dates in the past 6 months, here are some things I discovered about myself: - when I'm nervous, I bite my tongue. Only I discovered I unconsciously blow split bubbles too. - alcohol: the worst feeling in the world is knowing I can never say "make it 2". So any girl I went out with would have to be completely comfortable with the fact that I'll always have to be the designated driver. - getting ahead of yourself: it doesn't matter how much you want another date; don't assume that "sure" or "you're the best" when you ask her out again equals yes. Especially if it's by text. None of these are things Mom and Dad will teach you. And we don't all have ultra-perceptive friends we can count on as wing men. Therein lies the biggest benefit of using Catch: when Katie and Lois get feedback from your date. Believe me, that's when you'll hear the truth about what the opposite sex really thinks of you! Catch Matchmaking hosts many speed dating and singles events, that I have had the pleasure of attending over the past several years. They are very organized and provide opportunities to meet singles in many, different age ranges. May and Katie are very personable and approachable, and I have been able to reach May via email easily. She has been very kind, when I was unable to attend an event. I have been able to meet several interesting men, though, they haven't reached any kind of commitment level. Yet, you never know. It only takes one! May Hui is an absolute sweetheart to deal with. I met May through a speed dating event that her group hosted. From there, I was introduced to her match making service. I decided after meeting with May, and a one-on-one interview that I'd give it a shot. May mentioned that should I meet someone early on in the process, I can always put my membership on hold (vacation mode), and resume it up to a year later. While dating someone from her service, I kept shopping around. I shopped at another one of May's speed date services. Unfortunately, I had to cancel at the very last minute. May was super understanding about my situation and she let me have a rain check on the missed speed date event. After I finally decide to continue seeing the girl I met from her services, I inquired with May if I could transfer my membership to a friend as I don't think I'll be needing it anymore. May was more than happy to accommodate my request! I can't say how great May is. She genuinely enjoys her work, and it's been an absolute joy dealing with her. I hope I don't need her services again, hahaha!, but should I find myself single again, I definitely wouldn't hestitate to contact May. read more
