antipasto platter was rather meager. the chicken soup was okay but strangely, i was getting a maple syrup flavor and way too much white pepper. the bread was some kind of generic "italian" (not) served with an unremarkable oil and the main dish (sophie's choice) while a generous portion, seemed microwaved. perhaps the place was nicer before tony jr. took over but i feel the place is overpriced for what is served. there are better places. read more

Dropped by spontaneously with my boyfriend, and was surprised by how expensive every dish was ($20+). And there's a $9 fee to split a plate, which felt kinda wrong. But, we were there, and figured it must be really top notch. Took about 10 minutes for the waitress to take our orders. I had the meat-stuffed shells, and he had a clam and shrimp garlic pasta. Mine was marginal-- totally plain, under-seasoned. Boyfriend's was terrible. The pasta was essentially just buttered, with zero salt or flavor, and the shrimp was tough. Everything I've had at Olive Garden tasted 5 times better than what we had at this place. Waitress asked how the meal was, and I said it was just okay. She was taken aback and got extremely defensive. She told me that everything's made fresh, and basically demanded that I elaborate on what was wrong with it. I felt like I was being interrogated. Apparently it wasn't enough to just say I wasn't particularly satisfied. Will not be returning. read more

First time dining at Caterina's...they were above and beyond our expectations. Staff and service was excellent, and the food was even better. Atmosphere was friendly and inviting, highly recommend!!! We love this place. The atmosphere is classy and chill. The specials are always creative. They have a porterhouse on the menu, which is my favorite steak. A t-bone isn't uncommon, but an actual porterhouse? You don't even see that at steak joints. The antipasto platter is great. And they have Simma's cheesecake for dessert. Forget about it! Well, I had originally wanted to get/pick up some pie from Pizzeria Scott's but they were currently experiencing a 1:15 wait - wow. So, I ventured back to Caterina's. The reviews were all over the place, good, bad, so-so, etc, but I was curious. I decided to just ask the server what she'd recommend and she suggested this penne dish. I'm still not quite sure what it was, it was pretty vanilla in flavor but not horrible either. I'm sure they must have a signature dish they'd prefer to lead with - this couldn't have been it. Anyway, not a bad experience. Service was good but strangely slow at the end. It took me about 15 minutes to leave. Normally not an issue but a long week of travel had me leaning towards getting back to my hotel to assume the coffin position in bed - stupid tired. I'd try this place again but I'd certainly take time to dice into the menu a bit more and try something they're a bit more proud of. read more

This was a really good find. I'm not a huge fan of pasta, so Italian isn't usually one of my top choices in cuisines, but my wife loves it. Fortunately, there are many items on the menu at Caterina's that aren't pasta - and they offer options like a baked potato or fries as an alternative to a side of pasta with those meals. One thing we really liked was the complimentary antipasto platter to start - olive salad, three varieties of cured meats and a couple of cheeses, served with a nice warm bread loaf. Plus each meal comes with either soup or salad - a nice change from most places where those would be ala carte. Drinks were also great. For entrees, I had the Pork Involtini (pork cutlets rolled around roasted red peppers and cheese in a tomato sauce) and my wife had the Paglia-E-Fieno (spinach and fettuccine noodles with alfredo sauce, mushrooms and prosciutto). Both choices were great. We both had leftovers - portions are huge, especially with the pasta. My wife's leftovers were enough for at least two more meals. Would strongly suggest that you save room for dessert here. Specifically, the tiramisu! Their other desserts might be great, but I don't think we'll ever know, because I can't imagine ordering anything other than the tiramisu here! We've eaten this dessert dozens of times in dozens of different restaurants and in a wide range of variations. This was the best either of us had ever tasted, without exception! Order the tiramisu! Caterina's is one of those few true "romantic dinner" places in the area. The food is always great, and so is the service. But the prices are high. Our dinner for two was $150, and I'm not sure it was THAT good. Parking is difficult due to limited spaces that are tight for larger trucks (drop off your people, park, and fold in your mirrors). Dining here is a delightful experience, but not one I'd do often given the pricing. read more

I do not understand how Caterina's received an average of 4/5 stars. The service we received was excellent, but holy moly, was the food terrible and the restaurant, while charming in a lot of ways, had layers of dirt and grime on the photo frames and the edges of the booth. Ick. On top of that, it was expensive. First course: a basket of bread and butter with plate with olives, cubes of cheese, bologna (?), salami, and some pickled vegetables. Second course: Salad dressing with a few pieces of lettuce on top (ask for your dressing on the side). Main course: Chicken. Garlic chicken with a lemon wedge? It had absolutely zero flavor. Literally zero flavor. I think they soaked it in butter and put it on the plate. I honestly have no words to describe this food. The service was incredible, but the meal was $75 for two entrees, two drinks, and it absolutely wasn't worth it. We threw the chicken out. The only benefit to us eating here was that at least we didn't take any friends here. We honestly would have been mortified. read more

Very sweet. The bar made an excellent Manhattan. Large menu selection--but leans toward steak and seafood over Italian. Lovely complimentary antipasto plate with cheese, sausages, and a Excellent bread with both butter and a garlicky olive oil.great chick pea salad. Very decent chicken broth soup with rice. I had the petite filet (9 oz.) with the pasta side. Steak was very tender and cooked rare as requested. Good have had slightly better flavor. Pasta was fine with a decent red sauce. We've done two curbside pick-ups during this pandemic. The food was delicious - hot and enjoyable when we got home (about a 10 min ride). The food was ready on time and had great flavor (we've tried a meat sauce pasta as a side, lasagna, shrimp scampi, veal Parmesan, scallop/asparagus pasta, and an eggplant appetizer). Our Anniversary dinner was horrible. This place was cold, empty, OVERPRICED and unwelcoming. We felt very uncomfortable and the staff tried to hide that they were also uncomfortable as well. This is a cozy restaurant with great food and a welcoming atmosphere. We hadn't been here in many years for no real reason at all. Stopped in one night on our way home from a trip. We were greeted warmly and offered a table. We chose to sit at the small bar instead. You get warm bread and oil and an interesting antipasto to start your meal. The steak is delicious and the shrimp and pasta with garlic oil is superb. I did have a mediocre veal dish once, so now I stick to the shrimp. We were in town for Ragnar and happened upon this place. They accommodated 6 of us, even though we were underdressed. The olive oil for the bread was garlicky goodness. The antipasto platter we were served was amazing. Every single person enjoyed their meals immensely. I had the scallop and asparagus special and I was blown away. Will definitely be back. My boyfriend and I went here after searching for Italian restaurants in the area on Yelp and we were not let down. If anything, we were really impressed by everything! The decor inside makes you feel like you're truly in Italy (never been there, can only assume) and they had really great service. While I don't remember exactly what I ordered, it was something with chicken and it was really really delicious. Their appetizer tray was nice too. I WISH we had room for dessert, or ordered some to go, because man did their dessert menu look really good. Their food even tastes great as leftovers, and that can't be said of a lot of restaurants' food. If we're ever back in the Milwaukee area, we'll definitely come back here again for a nice formal dinner. read more

Horrid. I'm only slightly exaggerating. We stopped by for take-out after finding out our normal spot just down the street was closed (possibly for good). After paying 65 bucks(without tip) for Stuffed Shells, Mostaccioli (add 4 meatballs) , and Lasagna we were expecting food that came from just this side of heaven. What we got was watery Mostaccioli and Lasagna, 5 shells that clearly were stuffed by Lilliputians, and two pretty thinned out side salads. DISAPPOINTED!!! Perhaps if we had spent 140 dollars and ordered steak, lobster, and diamonds we would have been better satisfied. This by far one of my favorite Italian restaurants on this side of town. The restaurant is very cozy and elegant and great for a romantic outing. The menu selection is very large and mostly specializes in veal and seafood options. They almost always seem to have at least 3 or 4 specials a night too. Every dinner comes with soup or salad, freshly baked bread and a rock-solid antipasto tray. Dinner portions themselves are very large--it's impossible to leave this place hungry. Service has always been top-notch as well. They do have a sandwich menu for lunch and late night after 9pm I think and I wish they would offer that during dinner too because some of us aren't always in the mood for a 3 course heavy meal but that's not really a complaint as much as it is a suggestion. read more

Friday "Fish Fry" Was in the mood for a different Friday "fish fry" so we went to Caterina's. I love an Italian restaurant that starts you off with great bread and an olive oil dip . . . . mmmm. The salad was obviously fresh, you can tell when a restaurant serves veggies that have been sitting around for a while, ours were crisp and delicious . . . nice salad. I had the baked cod, I asked for melted butter which was served in a cute ceramic bowl, the butter kept melted and warm with a small candle. The fish was great, flaky, tender, tasty and oh so decadent dunked in that butter. Served with a drizzle of parsley flakes around the edge of the plate, cool presentation. My companions had the perch and loved it. Great service, great attention to detail, would definitely recommend. read more

This fantastic Italian restaurant has established an old-time feel AND a menu that reflects the truth of its heritage. As opposed to many modern, up-scale restaurants, meals here include both sides and soup or salad, so while the price isn't cheap, it also doesn't contain any hidden extras. The service is outstanding--and management has even allowed one of the waitresses to come up with her own salad dressing combo... that's definitely worth asking for. I've been here for both lunch and dinner and enjoyed myself immensely at either time of the day. The food is all outstanding: highly flavorful lamb chops; nicely aged steaks; fresh seafood; and perfectly prepared pasta. Starters have also been great--very fresh romaine and vegetables in their salads, or soups specially made that day. Of course, all that food means I've always ended up with left-overs, and no desserts... So someday I may have to try eating just hors d'oevres to save room for what have always sounded like tastey dessert options. read more

My husband and I went here with my family. We had a party of 6. The food was absolutely amazing! The service was excellent! Every meal is served with an antipasto tray, fresh bread with dipping oil, and soup or salad. Our bread was fresh out of the oven! All of our food was amazing with generous portions. I had the linguine with fresh mussels in marinara sauce. I have to say that they were by far the best mussels I've ever had! They gave me so many of them as well! Charming interior and friendly wait staff. Owner is into cars. Prices are on the steep side. Warm bread with a bowl of oil with garlic buds is a nice touch. Manhattan Clam Chowder was the waitress' fav, but just average in my view. Entree was Linguini with mushrooms, onions, garlic, butter and shrimp-- very good. What can I say other than this is my FAVORITE restaurant in the world. When I say the world I mean it. I have dined in Europe, Africa, Mexico, the Carribean, etc. and this place always makes me smile. My wife and I lived outside of Milwaukee for years and found ourselves going there for dinner once a month. We have tried ALL of the other "name" places in the Milwaukee and Madison area (Carnivore, Lake Park Bistro, Il Mito, Crustacean, Heaven City, Red Circle, Johnny Delmonico's, Fitch's, etc.) and this one tops it. Why?? Because the food is EXCELLENT, the atmoshphere is excellent, and the service is even better. So here is my usual dining experience....... We sit down and are served a complimentary antipasto tray filled with meats and cheeses. Oven-warmed loaf of bread is then served with butter (again, complimentary with dinner). This bread is ADDICTING and, alone, makes the trip worth it!!!! A little warm butter and a bit of fresh parmesan over the top makes it perfect. I then order the baked cod with steak fries (or you can get the pasta with marinara sauce instead of fries). The piece of cod is HUGE, not fishy, and firm. You get a choice of soup or salad. Get the Blue Cheese crumbled over sour cream!!! It is unreal and extremely generous!!! Like I said, my wife gets the Fettucini Alfredo. We pretty much get the same thing and have for years. We tried a lot of other items and they were ALL good, but just found something we really liked..... For dessert, the Tiramisu is phenomenal. And a HUGE portion!! My wife and I usually split a piece and she sips her Torke-brand coffee to end the meal. I am stuffed and MY meal cost around $15 plus $5-6 for the Tiramisu. Did I mention I am FULL??!!! My wife's is about the same and she will have some left to take home if she wishes. A few years ago, we moved to Madison and literally would drive out to Milwaukee every month or so JUST for dinner and then drive back. It is THAT good. Our food preference is everything from steak to sushi/sashimi, but this place is still our favorite. If I could give it 10 stars, I would!! read more

At here on a whim last Friday with my wife. It was around 9pm and the restaurant was about half full. Our server was very nice. The bread was delicious. After we only ordered water for beverages, our server took about 10-15 minutes before coming back to take our order. Our soup and salad was good, although the salad was very small. Our food took close to 30 minutes to get but when we did it was good. Nothing amazing, but good. No overall complaints besides delays in ordering and waiting time for our food. Good meal. read more

I went and was rushed saying I had to order by 8pm but the restaurant would remain open until 10pm, another 2 hours. The prices made me actually say, "Should we just go to Olive Garden instead?" (Lol!) Not a huge selection of dishes and not much if you don't eat meat (and don't want to ask for a meat pasta dish without the meat-who knows how that will end up). The worst part was the very slow service. We waited so long between hearing the specials and actually ordering that we felt forgotten. We've enjoyed Caterina's excellent Italian food for many years. Favorite menu items include Sophie's Choice, Straw & Hay, Orzatti con Gamberetti, Lasagna, and of course the Friday fish fry (pan fried perch!). Last week, I tried the asparagus penne pasta special, and it was delectable. Truthfully, I would recommend any of their pasta dishes, as they really know how to prepare it al dente. Service is consistently great - friendly and professional, with the timing of the meal just right (no main dish served while you're still on the salad, for example). It's an excellent value on wonderfully prepared food, especially when you consider the size of the entrée portions and the fact that salad and bread is included. On our last couple of visits, however, we've noticed little things that aren't being kept up in the dining room (dust in the corners, crumpled up paper placemats that looked sloppy, etc.). Little things that hopefully don't indicate anything else is slipping . . . we still love the food at Caterina's and hope to enjoy going there for a long time to come. read more
