The initial greeting was spot on, the atmosphere was inviting, the food was okay, the service the same. This was a middle of the road decent mexican food meal. $16.99 for a ,"Catrin burrito", $3.50 for a side of rice (high price for the amount maybe 3/8 cup and $3.50 for a diet coke. So far so average. I cut the burrito in half ate half and decided to have the other half tomorrow. I asked for a side of cheese sauce, the server asked do you want "this much for $3 or this much for $6" (indicating the with his finger and thumb). I asked for the $6 amount. The server brought 1 large and 1 small clear plastic clamshell container, and a container of "cheese sauce" which turned out to be the consistancy of a creamed soup. The server then dropped the bill. Out the door $36 after taxes and before tip. This included a "take out surcharge" of $1.25 and a credit fee of $1.28. Who charges these fees?? Bottom line: There are choices Plaza Azteca, Juans, Cinco de Mayo to name three locals that out cook and serve Catrin in a big way. I tipped $2,the food nor service deserved any raves, and the fees were not received well. The meal was at best a $25 value, with tax and a 20% tip making it a $34 value. I paid $38. Some might say i'm makiing much out of just $4. It's the principle, it's about customer service, and competitive value. Catrin missed the mark with me. The staff is incredibly friendly. I left my wallet here and only realized well after they were closed, and they were kind enough to let me get it back that same night! Thank you very much guys! Their food was really flavorful and some of the dishes have fantastic presentation. We got the taquitos appetizer, and my husband got the tlacoyo which came out sizzling, and I got the pollo zamora. The elote, ceviche, and several other dishes were excellent, which is why I was happy to compliment the staff and leave a generous tip. The only disappointment was the Pinchos Steak Skewers. The steak was served well done, tough to chew, and the potatoes were rock hard and undercooked. When I mentioned it, I was told the potatoes were essentially for presentation and that the waiter should have asked how I wanted the steak cooked. Respectfully, I disagree. Asking for steak temperature should be part of the restaurant's process, and food quality ultimately falls on the kitchen and management, not just the server. Sophia and I headed here for Newport News Restaurant Week anxious to try some of their dishes. They opened up last year in the Richneck area and from how it seemed via responses online was worth going to. Let's see how the result turned out below. The initial plan was to have lunch one Saturday after we went to the movies, but they were packed with a 15-20 minute wait so we left. On the following Thursday, we came for dinner and again, it was packed but the wait was only 10 minutes. But they didn't take our name down or even ask. Kind of strange. Inside, the decor is beautiful. They certainly know how to keep it spotless. And there were candles lit everywhere. Definitely gives you a calm vibe. They also had a musician perform acoustic guitar for the night. When someone plays a Britney Spears song really well, you know they have talent. Now this is where things take a turn. Within minutes, the server came by giving out menus and taking our order for drinks (waters for both of us). It took probably 5 minutes for him to come back. Immediately, I noticed there weren't enough waiters/waitresses walking around. He did come back and told us they weren't offering the dinner menu for restaurant week. No real biggie since our backup choices didn't cost that much more. I selected the asada quesadilla which consisted of grilled chicken, cheese, onions, and beans with salad on the side and Sophia selected a chimichanga dish with beans and rice. And then.....the wait. For most of the time, we had water and chips with salsa and white sauce. Remember when I said not enough waiters on hand? Turns out the kitchen staff was undersraffed as well. With a huge volume of customers, you would think the speed of meals would increase. But not here. People that were seated when we first entered around 6:30pm were there for over 2 hours. Our food did not arrive until just after 8pm. And that was after they brought food that we did not order (tacos and a burrito). Well, our food did come 10 minutes after the snafu. My quesadilla was good and I took half of it home where I finished the next night. But something didn't look right. Typically, I've had these dishes where it was either split in 2's, cut into quarters and in the middle would be salad or sauce to spread. The presentation had the quesadilla hanging over the salad. This was a first and had the both of us having a 'WTH??' moment. Honestly, I actually let out a laugh. I even showed co-workers the picture and they jumped back. Not kidding with that. Maybe they thought the presentation would wow customers, but I'm pretty sure many of them were having a puzzled look like we did. I really wanted to enjoy my visit, but with everything that took place, it was hard to walk away with a smile. To be honest, I would be surprised if they lasted for over 3 years. It's one thing to start off with below average service when you first open up, which is common for any new business. But if you have this issue months later, something needs to be fixed. The onions were literally dripping down the side of the bar table onto the floor in between my friend and I. The guy did not come back and clean it. It took us 5 mins to get someone's attention to either give us napkins so we could clean it or they clean it. The onions just slowly slid and dripped. The guy comes back with his hands and just wipes the onions into his hands. No napkin or cloth. Smh. So we're still like we need a napkin there's wet onion residue in between us. Towards the end I ordered churros to go. But as we were waiting the server kept sneezing IN HER HANDS WITH HER GLOVES ON AND DIDN'T REMOVE THEM OR WASH HER HANDS. At that point I said no thanks. I paid my bill with tap to pay and left. The food here is so good. The Trompo pastor was huge and flavorful. The elotes were good too. Everything was tasty. But, the cleanliness WASN'T there. They offer lunch until 3:00, even on weekends, which is a nice bonus. There's also a solid selection of vegetarian options. Went here for dinner on Saturday 5/2. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were seated in the "new" section as we requested and immediately realized that was a mistake. It was so loud, I am assuming because its all brick and concrete that neither of us could hear each other across the table[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. We I finally got my food It was not even hot and the taco sat in the beans so long that it fell apart in my hand. I want to give 4 1/2 stars- this is my new favorite Mexican restaurant. You'd never guess it from its location and exterior- just seems like it should be in a better location. When you're driving there be careful turning in. The staff are amazing and attentive and are quick to greet and seat you. I have been three times in the last two weeks and it's like that every single time. The food and drinks come quick too so you're not hungry waiting long. Everything is fresh they serve- ingredients are so important and they don't skimp here. I recommend the Catrin Pinchos and Elotes. Both were perfection taste wise and delicious. If you want good date ambiance the candles are nice that they light and the sound isn't bad there- you can have good conversation. Talk about authentic Mexican food on the East Coast, and I'm going to mention Catrin. Having grown up in California, I am very picky and particular with my selection of Mexican food. Catrin hits the spot. I didn't wait long for my food which comes to the issue. I ordered the Carne Azada, when I got home which was five minutes everything was warm so I had to heat it. I was given a large piece of meat but there was no flavor, no grill taste, it tasted rubbery and there was a tone of hard spots that I didn't eat. The rice and beans came in a small container similar to the salsa. The rice and beans had seasoning but the beans were not refried like I'm used to and the rice was ok. I've been waiting for the spot to open up. It finally has and we have been there twice. We actually haven't eaten there yet, because we always get our food to go. From what my husband tells me when he picks the food up, it looks really nice inside lol. When I place our to go order over the phone, I get the same guy every time and he is so enthusiastic and sweet. You can tell he loves his job and he loves the food. Delicious! I'm usually hesitant about trying places when they first open but this place exceeded expectations. The inside is super cute and clean, the food was AMAZING, the servers were so nice and friendly. I got a Texas Margarita (large which was huge), and the mixed fajitas. A friend recommended that we try this place out. As of my visit, they didn't have their ABC license. They did have a sign on the window to let you know it was coming soon. That didn't stop me from enjoying their food. I had the Catrin Burrito with Steak chorizo from the lunch menu. It was delicious and the portions were hearty. My Wife had the Steak Fajitas.
