    Shrimp arugula salad, pasta bolognese
    Cindy F.

Cannot believe I have never reviewed this place. I will forever call it Nordstrom Cafe. This place has a warm spot in my heart from growing up in CA, would go to Nordstrom regularly with my mom & grandma, & have lunch. The cafe has not changed in 20 years, except prices are higher & they don't serve cafeteria style anymore. My salad, hubby's pasta, 1 small glass of wine & 1 fountain drink was $60. But honestly one of the best salads I've had in a long time. The polenta croutons are phenomenal. Shrimp were huge, perfectly cooked, & lots of pesto. Hubby loved his pasta, meatballs were made with chicken, & perfectly seasoned. Great wine options. I kind of forgot about this place when they were supposed to move to the Plaza, so haven't been in years. Used to be my regular go to with my friends. Need to add back to rotation, for sure. I don't realize they did breakfast, too!

Reunited and it feels so good! I've been missing my bi-weekly lunches at Nordstrom Cafe, and I am so glad to see that the Roma tomato soup, and service are just how they have always been. The French dip is hands down my favorite sandwich, and there's just one of the best, with fresh potato chips! Dave has worked here forever and always takes excellent care of us, It appears they're back to full menu, and have a really good kids menu! Don't overlook this delicious destination just because it's in the mall, you will not be disappointed!

If you're on a shopping spree at oak park mall, skip the food court and head over to the Nordstrom cafe. Arguably the best tomato soup you'll get anywhere, paired with their crustinis makes for a delectable bite. Their Caesar salad is always good and comes with a delicious Parmesan crisp. Service is always good. Their "Ebar" downstairs makes the best frozen coffees. Definitely recommend for a great lunch.

My first time back after 8-10 years probably. The interior looks the same, which I liked. The Caesar salad is still the best I've ever had. Sad that they did not toss the salad in front of you in the line, and that it came out with the rest of the meal. Nonetheless, it was still fantastic. The pasta was delicious like it was many years before. I used to get the salmon all the time, so it was disappointing to see it dry and flavorless now. Service was good but a little slow.

Simple Salad, Roma Tomato Basil Soup, and Prime French Dip

I used to come here when I was younger and I always enjoyed the food so recently I decided to try Marketplace Cafe out again! I ordered the Simple Salad, Roma Tomato Basil Soup, and Prime French Dip. The food came out in a timely manner and tasted as good as it looks. The service was also amazing, with everyone working here being so kind and helpful. I am so glad I stopped by. Next time shopping in Oak Park Mall gets you hungry- or if you're just in the area- stop by! Your tastebuds will thank you.

Very very good! I've never eaten at a nordstrom cafe but I've heard tons of people rave about it. I stopped in for a quick lunch, also not realizing how pricey it was... I ordered the salmon salad and it was wonderful! I'm a salmon salad lover and order it every chance I get. This one did not disappoint. My waiter, Miguel, was precious! He immediately introduced himself, asked if I wanted bread, and brought out a hot roll. Once my food was delivered, he continued to check up on me. Not in an annoying way by any means. He brought me his business card with a chocolate mint. Very classy spot, out of the food court. I would certainly recommend for a nice lunch or dinner!

Soup was delicious, but hardly a replacement for a kid meal for a 10 month old.

I hadn't been to Marketplace Cafe (aka Nordstrom Cafe) for quite awhile, so I was excited to dine there during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. While the cafe layout was still the same old, same old, there was no longer a long bar where you could view all the food selections of the day. However, we still placed our orders at the cash register, but just had to order sight unseen from the menu. I didn't realize how much I loved the chef behind the counter preparing salads and food. At any rate, after we placed the order, that's when it all sort of went downhill. There were 3 of us with one 10 month old and the food took FOREVER. After several people, who were in line after us, were served their food, I finally went up to the cash register to inquire as to whether our food would be out soon because you can only entertain a toddler with Cheerios for so long! The gal asked where we were sitting and said she would check on it right away. After others continued to receive their food, I waited another 10 minutes before going back to the cash register to inquire about our food. By this time, we had waited over 30 minutes for our food to be served and I was about to ask for a full refund. A different gal asked where we were sitting and told us that our breakfast sandwich and other items we had ordered were items that required a bit more time (a salad and sandwich, say what?!) but she would check on it. So, back to the table I went. Our food finally came out several minutes later, but no buttered noodles for the baby with an explanation that that item was taking a bit longer to prepare. What?! However, they wondered if perhaps we might like a bowl of soup in its place.Ummm, no, this was the food for the 10 month old, so soup didn't really cut it. Well, a few minutes later, here comes the soup, but still no noodles! It was sort of comical by then except for we had no food to feed to the baby! When the server finally brought out the noodles he did say he would offer a refund. Given the nature of the service, I assumed he meant the entire meal would be refunded, but it was only the noodles which was a nice gesture, but maybe not enough by service standards? Per usual, the food was delicious once we received it )thus, my 3-star rating), but my daughter said she would probably never dine there again. I have always enjoyed dining there when I shop at Nordstrom, but based on this experience, it will be awhile before I think of going back.

Everything is made to order from their chef and the selections for the day are displayed so you can actually see the food you will be getting. Started out with a great desert-tiramisu. Wow. It was light and just enough sweet to make you crave more. I had to start with the desert while I waited for my sandwich. I ordered the French Dip. It came out fresh and tasty with the home made au jus. The bread was toasted and crispy. The meat was tender and flavorful with the touch of cheese. My friend ordered the asparagus grilled cheese panini. He loved it. Great lunch meal and all together with desert ran about $44.

    Ginger Soy Chicken Noodles
    Casie W.

I went in at 7:30 p.m. and there was no line and the to go order came out in under 15 minutes. It was my first time trying the Ginger Soy Chicken noodles and it was really tasty. I loved all of the bite size veggies in it, no huge pieces that are awkward to eat. The chicken was also cut up in really small chunks, it was perfectly cooked too. I liked the flavor combo: spicy(very very small amount IMO, the spicier the better for me), salty, with a hint of orange and of course with your traditional Asian sauce flavor. I would definitely get this again. The portion size was plenty, I told myself I'd save some for left overs for lunch tomorrow..oops too good to stop myself I guess!

Some of the people in our group thought some of their dishes were a little bland, but I liked everything I tried. We had the okra and fried pickles for appetizers. The pickles have a very crunchy breading and a dip that was delicious! The okra is very good - especially with the dip for the pickles. We also tried the biscuits with butter and peach compote. They were great! Unique, fluffy, flavorful, and definitely worth a side order. I ordered the chicken and waffles with the peach. It was a good dish. The chicken tenders had a little bit of a spice that I didn't totally love, but they were still good. I also tried my friend's shrimp and grits, and they were delicious. The person next to me got meatloaf and brussels sprouts sprouts and really enjoyed it! He was practically licking the plate! Everyone seemed to enjoy their drinks as well. The only one I tried was the espresso martini, and it was very tasty! I would definitely go back to Tupelo Honey the next time I'm in Lenexa.

We hit the club for brunch with a group, and while the ambiance was pure "Country Club Chic," the execution was a bit more "Sunday Morning Sand Trap." The Liquid Courage I started off my round with two drinks. the Bloody Mary. It was fine--tasty enough, but it certainly didn't change my life or inspire any poetry. However, things got interesting with their Tequila/Cold Brew/Liquor 43 concoction. Topped with an egg foam cap, it was actually pretty solid. A bit of a gamble, but sometimes you have to roll the dice when the menu is trying that hard. The Culinary "Hit and Miss" Then came the food, or as I like to call it: The Great Consistency Crisis. The Steak: I asked for medium-rare; I received medium-well with a "char" that felt more like a personal vendetta against the cow. The Potatoes: Apparently, potato portions are determined by a lottery system. I received about half the amount of the person next to me. Maybe I didn't look hungry enough? The Eggs: My over-easy eggs had crispy, hard edges and arrived at a temperature I'd describe as "lukewarm at best." We also had to hunt down salt and pepper like we were on a scavenger hunt. Honestly, I probably should have just hit the buffet and cut out the middleman. The Service Our server was perfectly nice, but he appeared to be roughly twelve years old. Since he wasn't legally old enough to understand the complexity of a craft cocktail, he couldn't give us any info on the drink menu. We just had to "go with our gut"--which is a dangerous game when tequila and cold brew are involved. The Verdict I'm not saying I won't be back, but consider this a fair warning: if Round 2 involves another charred steak and a side of "room temperature" eggs, I'll be sending it back for a rerun faster than a shanked drive into the woods. 3/5 Stars -- Great for people-watching, questionable for potato-equity.

Unfortunately, the service side fell flat. We arrived mid-afternoon around 1:30-2:00, and the restaurant wasn't busy. We asked if we could sit upstairs, and the host seemed confused before telling us it was closed, then seated us directly next to a loud group despite plenty of quieter open tables nearby. A few minutes later, we looked upstairs ourselves and saw multiple occupied tables being actively served...what the heck? The most frustrating part of this experience wasn't the seating, it was the complete indifference from the staff. Drinks didn't arrive until after we had already finished eating, and despite the restaurant being relatively slow, nobody seemed remotely concerned. No urgency or communication. Just a normal day for them, I guess. A kitchen can only carry a restaurant so far when the front-of-house operates with this little care for hospitality. The atmosphere gives the impression of a place that wants to feel polished and upscale, but the service felt lazy and disconnected from the guest experience. Mistakes happen in restaurants. What matters is whether the staff notices and cares enough to fix them. We left wondering how a restaurant with food this solid has become comfortable delivering service this poor.

The first thing to note here is that Verbena is located inside the hotel at Meadowbrook and it's gorgeous. The hotel is picturesque, and the restaurant is no different. It's elegant, vibey in an upscale way, and has that kind of ambiance that makes you feel like it's worth it to spend a little money here - which spoiler alert- you will! Before dinner I do as I always do and surveyed the menu from home to see what sounds good and when I got there I stuck with my choices and ordered two drinks - one that had a tiki flair, and after their spin on an old fashioned. For dinner I chose their cauliflower entree. We will start with the drinks: no notes. I forget the names of what I had but the tiki inspired one had rum and it was honestly one of the better rum drinks I've had in some time. It was sweet but not overpowering and the rum was perfectly complimented. It was so good I had to switch drinks for round two because I knew I'd drink another one of these too fast! Thir riff on an old fashioned was excellent as well. These are honestly my barometer for a bartender as I make them at home all the time and I enjoy seeing how others take a classic and elevate it at a place like this. I knew it would be good when they asked if I wanted rye or bourbon, which was a thoughtful question. I went with bourbon and it was also excellent. Not too sweet and perfectly sippable. Now I'm going to get into why I'm rating it 4/5 and not 5/5 because it honestly could be 5/5. To be fair to Verbena I think this could be just due to the group I was with so I'll return sometime and see if I feel differently, but here is my one critique: the price point and the entree size. I eat out at nice places a fair amount and while I don't make it a regular occurance to pay $30+ for an entree, I do when I got out and I was planning on dropping some money here. What wasn't clear to me is that at dinner I think the set up here is meant for you to order a salad and then an entree to make a full meal. Or pair an entree with one of their other small plates to begin, sort of like Farina. The difference is when I went to Farina they were very clear about this at the start so our whole table all ordered a starter and then an entree and so forth - yes it was very pricey, but our expectations were set from the start. Now, this might have happened if it wasn't for our group. I was with a younger crowd and they all had been before and they all ordered salads as entrees - I'm not 25 anymore and not afraid to order a real meal (enter face palm here) so I ordered a standard entree and I expected at the price point (especially in the 'burbs) to be a more standard entree size. The cauliflower steak was honestly DIVINE - the flavors were perfect and loved every bite, but it was at the end of the day a $30 singular piece of cauliflower with some sauce and while it was great, I left hungry and even texted my husband that after spending around 80 dollars here I was going to probably pick up taco bell after this party was over. Now, again I'm going to reiterate that I was here with a group and the server did an excellent job of trying to meet everyone where they were at and I am probably 10 years older than most at the table so my expectations and life experience is just different. Verbena is an awesome spot and on my way home I was thinking about how I need to return for a happy hour to get more of those great drinks and try it out again. the tl;dr of this is if you go for dinner I'd order a salad and and entree - or ask them about how to best set up your meal. Plan to spend some money, and have fun. It's a really elegant spot in JOCO.
