This was a solid lunch pick. I stopped into Nordstrom Café not expecting much, and I was pleasantly surprised. The shrimp and arugula salad was fresh, filling, and plated like somebody cared. The shrimp were well-seasoned and grilled just right. Not rubbery, not overcooked. The arugula was peppery and crisp, and that grilled corn added a sweet little pop that brought everything together. The dressing was light but creamy, and there were crunchy little crouton cubes that gave it just enough texture to keep things interesting. I do wish the portion was a little more generous for the price, but overall it hit the spot. Perfect for a quick lunch that feels grown, balanced, and like you're doing something nice for your body without sacrificing flavor. Would definitely order it again while pretending I'm just there to browse shoes. read more

Cannot believe I have never reviewed this place. I will forever call it Nordstrom Cafe. This place has a warm spot in my heart from growing up in CA, would go to Nordstrom regularly with my mom & grandma, & have lunch. The cafe has not changed in 20 years, except prices are higher & they don't serve cafeteria style anymore. My salad, hubby's pasta, 1 small glass of wine & 1 fountain drink was $60. But honestly one of the best salads I've had in a long time. The polenta croutons are phenomenal. Shrimp were huge, perfectly cooked, & lots of pesto. Hubby loved his pasta, meatballs were made with chicken, & perfectly seasoned. Great wine options. I kind of forgot about this place when they were supposed to move to the Plaza, so haven't been in years. Used to be my regular go to with my friends. Need to add back to rotation, for sure. Reunited and it feels so good! I've been missing my bi-weekly lunches at Nordstrom Cafe, and I am so glad to see that the Roma tomato soup, and service are just how they have always been. The French dip is hands down my favorite sandwich, and there's just one of the best, with fresh potato chips! Dave has worked here forever and always takes excellent care of us, It appears they're back to full menu, and have a really good kids menu! Arguably the best tomato soup you'll get anywhere, paired with their crustinis makes for a delectable bite. Their Caesar salad is always good and comes with a delicious Parmesan crisp. My first time back after 8-10 years probably. The interior looks the same, which I liked. The Caesar salad is still the best I've ever had. Sad that they did not toss the salad in front of you in the line, and that it came out with the rest of the meal. Nonetheless, it was still fantastic. The food came out in a timely manner and tasted as good as it looks. The service was also amazing, with everyone working here being so kind and helpful. I am so glad I stopped by. I had not been to the cafe in Nordstroms for years, but I took a child to ride the carousel in the mall and we decided to have lunch there, too. It was definitely the right decision. She loved her food, but thought her dad made better green beans and potatoes. I had a turkey club sandwich and caesar salad. Both were excellent. The salad had fresh crisp lettuce which I love. We waited patiently for our food as it took about 30 minutes. Not sure why but we didn't complain. We just sat and talked and enjoyed our time together. While we were eating our waiter (Nahom-per our receipt I think that was his name) visited the table and advised our wait had been excessive and unacceptable, so he was refunding what I paid. I told him that was not necessary, but he insisted. Talk about great service! What does that mean for the cafe? I will be returning sooner and more often. Nahom provided excellent service throughout our meal and truly left a great impression on my seven-year-old friend! She thought he was "just so nice." Next time she's in the mall I'm sure she'll ask to have lunch at Nordstrom's. read more

Very very good! I've never eaten at a nordstrom cafe but I've heard tons of people rave about it. I stopped in for a quick lunch, also not realizing how pricey it was... I ordered the salmon salad and it was wonderful! I'm a salmon salad lover and order it every chance I get. This one did not disappoint. My waiter, Miguel, was precious! He immediately introduced himself, asked if I wanted bread, and brought out a hot roll. Once my food was delivered, he continued to check up on me. Not in an annoying way by any means. He brought me his business card with a chocolate mint. Very classy spot, out of the food court. I would certainly recommend for a nice lunch or dinner! read more

I hadn't been to Marketplace Cafe (aka Nordstrom Cafe) for quite awhile, so I was excited to dine there during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. While the cafe layout was still the same old, same old, there was no longer a long bar where you could view all the food selections of the day. However, we still placed our orders at the cash register, but just had to order sight unseen from the menu. I didn't realize how much I loved the chef behind the counter preparing salads and food. At any rate, after we placed the order, that's when it all sort of went downhill. There were 3 of us with one 10 month old and the food took FOREVER. After several people, who were in line after us, were served their food, I finally went up to the cash register to inquire as to whether our food would be out soon because you can only entertain a toddler with Cheerios for so long! The gal asked where we were sitting and said she would check on it right away. After others continued to receive their food, I waited another 10 minutes before going back to the cash register to inquire about our food. By this time, we had waited over 30 minutes for our food to be served and I was about to ask for a full refund. A different gal asked where we were sitting and told us that our breakfast sandwich and other items we had ordered were items that required a bit more time (a salad and sandwich, say what?!) but she would check on it. So, back to the table I went. Our food finally came out several minutes later, but no buttered noodles for the baby with an explanation that that item was taking a bit longer to prepare. What?! However, they wondered if perhaps we might like a bowl of soup in its place.Ummm, no, this was the food for the 10 month old, so soup didn't really cut it. Well, a few minutes later, here comes the soup, but still no noodles! It was sort of comical by then except for we had no food to feed to the baby! When the server finally brought out the noodles he did say he would offer a refund. Given the nature of the service, I assumed he meant the entire meal would be refunded, but it was only the noodles which was a nice gesture, but maybe not enough by service standards? Per usual, the food was delicious once we received it )thus, my 3-star rating), but my daughter said she would probably never dine there again. It seemed like an odd little place to eat. Who eats lunch at Nordstrom? One visit was all it took to convince me! Initially, we had a hard time deciding what to eat because all of the options sounded so good. There were several different soups and salads to chose from as well as paninis and pasta dishes. We ended up with tomato soup and a southwest chicken panini and were not disappointed! The soup was creamy and had great flavor. Next time, I'd love to try a salad. They all looked delicious and had unique cominations of dressings and ingredients. The only compliant I have is that the restaurant is cafeteria style and it does seem to be a little loud. It was light and just enough sweet to make you crave more. I had to start with the desert while I waited for my sandwich. I ordered the French Dip. It came out fresh and tasty with the home made au jus. The bread was toasted and crispy. The meat was tender and flavorful with the touch of cheese. Talk about some yummy food. In Nordstroms of all places! I've been going here for years with my mom. Over the years it has kind of become our place to meet with other ladies and catch up. The service is quick and the ordering process is unique and fun. I almost always get the tomato basil soup which is amazing and comes with that perfect crunch dipping bread. The caesar salad is also great with a parmesan chip but this last time it was quite heavy on the dressing. I'll make sure to ask for it on the side next time. I used to always get one of the pastas with red sauce, but they have switched up the menu so it isn't always there. I'm sure the others are divine as well. Now that I'm focusing more on the healthy foods I had a harder time finding something with a lower amount of calories but maybe one day when I'm feeling like cheating I'll order the pasta and get a giant cookie or a LEMON BAR. I love Nordstrom's café and was surprised to see I hadn't reviewed it before. Usually, I get either a salad - they have a few that are all very good or a sandwich. They always have a good selection of sandwiches and a few pasta dishes as well. Then, you get to the desserts. They usually have tiramisu and other Wonderful desserts, but I love their cookies. Both their lemon ricotta and their maple nut cookies are addictive. It's cafeteria style where you walk through the line and select your entrées, you were given a ticket, you pay and then the food is brought to your table. I went in at 7:30 p.m. and there was no line and the to go order came out in under 15 minutes. It was my first time trying the Ginger Soy Chicken noodles and it was really tasty. I loved all of the bite size veggies in it, no huge pieces that are awkward to eat. The chicken was also cut up in really small chunks, it was perfectly cooked too. I liked the flavor combo: spicy(very very small amount IMO, the spicier the better for me), salty, with a hint of orange and of course with your traditional Asian sauce flavor. This is a an absolute underrated restaurant. I mean, who would have thought? A restaurant in the middle (actually on top of) a clothing store? Really? Yes, really. As you enter the cafe, you will line up cafeteria style and choose your food. Soups are first, if you are a first timer to the cafe I can't recommend the Tomato Basil (they also sell jars of it here) enough. The second soup changes daily, but I have had the Wisconsin Cheese Soup and the Artichoke Vegetable. After the soups you can pick from a wide variety of dishes (sandwiches, salads, small pizzas, pasta dishes) that are displayed as well as some desserts and then walk to the register to finish your order. FYI, the cafe serves normal beverages, but also Boulevard Beer and wine. Once you're out of line feel free to find a seat where ever you want in the dining room, which is decidedly very non-cafeteria like. A server will be happy to help you if you have any questions and also offer refills, etc... Prices? Very competitive and worth while. You can get a full meal in the cafe for $10-$12 compared to one for $8-$10 in the grease pit of Oak Park Mall's food court. This is a restaurant I highly recommend. read more

It had been 3 years since I had seen my friend. In the hustle and bustle of business, both he and I had withdrawn from business networking, where we had formed a quick and good friendship. But, years had passed, things had changed, and we hadn't had a chance to see each other. I let him pick the place to grab lunch and he suggested Nordstrom Cafe. Boy, was I glad he did. It was 12:25 when I got there and there was a line out the door (it's on the 3rd floor). I was handed a menu and told by a smiling and friendly older woman (in an enthusiastic voice) about the soup de jour and the specials. My friend joined me in line at 12:30...there were at least 20 people behind me at that point. I realized we had hit the rush. We hugged, chatted in line for a few minutes as we inched forward, and then ordered. While it's set up classic "cafeteria style" where you come through a line and order what you want - nothing, save the desserts and pastries, are ready made. Everything is made to order. The dining area buzzed with the healthy noise of any great lunchtime spot. My friend was staying on the straight and narrow with a great salad - I went for some pasta, but since I don't eat meat on fridays, I asked for the chicken and asparagus penne to have shrimp substituted for the chicken. As I expected (and you will see a recurring theme here...the Nordstrom experience...a universe in which the word "no" does not exist), there was a dutiful nod with an "of course, sir - there may be a slight upcharge; is that okay?" Yes, of course it was okay. They handed me a metal stand with a number on top so that when my made-to-order pasta was ready, they would know where to find me. I was on to the desserts, where I was snagged by a delicious pumpkin bar - dense and delicious, but not too much so - but enough to make me split it with my friend. We sat down at the booth - at perhaps the most comfortable booth seat I've ever sat in. As he sat down I remarked to him how clearly the brand was preserved here. I noted the comfort of the chairs, the fact that a suited maitre'd and a very attractive assistant were overseeing the entire dining area and that we had waitstaff who asked if we needed a dinner roll (complimentary, of course - and don't pass them up, they are good). This is the sign of a well-oiled machine and it is perhaps particularly gratifying as a business owner to see such a thing in existence. Our waitress (apart from being good-looking, as I suppose is a Nordstrom requirement) was courteous, brought fresh-cracked pepper, and refilled our waters. Do tip. They are probably being paid by Nordstrom anyway and don't expect tips, but the service you'll receive deserves it. Might be the best place in Johnson County to get a garden-variety afternoon lunch. I've now eaten here several times and had held off reviewing until I was sure... this is a darn fine spot to dine. Not your typical restaurant as you can imagine with the proximity to a lot of pricey clothing. The clientele here clearly has some money, and Nordstrom clearly has made a decision to run a top flight restaurant with little lacking. I've found the service, and more importantly, the food to be well thought out, cooked nearly to perfection each time, and the wine selections superb. It's noisy and crowded, for lunch. Expect to dine with 150 Johnson county soccer moms--nothing wrong with that, but the crowd clearly leans toward the ladies. Dinner, a little lighter. It's not a buffet, but you grab a tray and go through a line and make your choices, pay at a register at the end. Drinks are mostly self-serve except for the vino. In particular, the Tuscan Salmon plate is loaded with spectacularly fire roasted vegetables and the salmon (have had it twice) has not been sitting around. Someone is cooking it fresh and it's finished and seasoned to perfection (with some fresh pesto). Love to have received a plate cared for this well and a certain highly rated mid-town eatery that charged twice the price a few weeks ago. Grrrrr. The soups are marvelous but loaded with calories. I can deal with that. They provide calorie counter pamphlets if you're worried. The wines, very nice. Last night we ordered and paid for two glasses of Cabernet at $8 each. They lady said, "oh, I screwed up... we're out, but I'll give you the $10 a glass Cab no charge." It was superb. Now here's the deal: I wouldn't call this a destination for a dinner night out in my opinion. It's located on the third floor of a mall inside of a department store and lots of people are carrying shopping bags. Not exactly a great romantic spot, but if you want a really solid meal that's delicious without the pretense this is a great choice. Also a great break from shopping. Goat cheese and strawberry salad is my standard. Red velvet cupcakes, creme brule and the everything cookie is the sweetest ending. The atmosphere- A little more "cafeteria" then I would prefer, but whatever. Service- You order at the counter with a tray and they make the cold food in front of you. Hot food is delivered to the table in a few minutes. You pay at the register. Here's my only issue- the pseudo waiter. Either give us table service or get rid of the fake waiters. The "waiters" usually stop by to see if you need anything and then end up putting down what looks like a bill (actually a couple chocolates and their biz card) at the end of the meal. I can grab a chocolate on the way out. What the hell am I going to do with a waiters business card? I don't mind leaving a couple dollars if someone actually does something for me. However, I never receive refills, the roll (which used to be at the counter) that I requested, fresh pepper for my salad or at times- even a clean table. The only time I do receive these services is when the restaurant is empty and the waiter is bored. I have been to Nordstrom Cafes all across the USA. Other locations manage to do table service flawlessly. Nordstrom needs to decide what kind of experience they want eaters to have and do the same thing at every location. Dumbing it down for KC sucks. Also, the word is out. People who would never shop at Nordstrom are dragging their messy kids here and old folks love it. The line is longer every time I go for lunch. If "fan-sual" was a word, the Marketplace Cafe would be it. Fancy and casual. I love it here; the quality of the food is superb and service is impressive. This is seriously a gem! If you're up and about the Oak Park Mall, skip Panera, swing by Nordstrom's, go to the third floor, and be wooed by the jazzy music in the near distance. Ignore unaffordable items in view. Anyways, I had the best chicken Alfredo dish I've ever tasted--it was just super fresh, everything cooked perfectly. I also got some tiramisu and no regrets at all here. It was heavenly. My boyfriend was also curious about the soups when we walked in and we were immediately offered to try some samples. Nevertheless, I ended up downing the little sample of their soup because it was so good. It was tomato soup, which I've always hated... Ultimately, this is such a great alternative to Panera. I met a friend for lunch here yesterday. When we scheduled it, we had no idea that there would be a big anniversary sale going on in the store.The crowd here was much larger than it normally would have been. Located on the third floor of the store, it was not hard to find and parking was relatively easy despite the crowd. I arrived a little before our scheduled lunch date and shopped for a bathing suit top. My friend arrived about 1:15 pm and although the line was fairly long, 15-20 people including children, it moved quickly and our wait was only about 10 minutes. A very classy, elderly woman (she told us she was 79) offered us a sample of the Margherita Pizza and told us the specials; Artichoke Parmesan soup, was among them. She also explained that the food was organic and gluten-free. I later saw on the back of the menu that they are a very "green" restaurant that uses many recycled products. I was new to this cafe and wasn't sure what to expect. It is set up cafeteria-style. I was able to get my soup, given a number on a stand for my sandwich and my friend's salad, pay, and find a seat. It was self-serve for the beverages. I chose iced tea. I ordered half a Cranberry Turkey Panini to go with the soup special. My friend had the Nicoise Salad with Salmon. She had been here many times before and clearly knew what to order as a veteran. The salad looked amazing. My food was scrumptious, as well. The soup was a tangy tomato base with chunks of artichoke hearts and Parmesan cheese with a slice of bruschetta on the side. Waiters checked on us to see if we needed anything like water or refills on our drinks, or if we wanted dessert. Tipping was left optional which made the total bill very reasonable. As an added bonus, I asked the assistant manager if I could photograph him and the restaurant for my review. (I always ask first). He declined, but got the General Manager, Amy. She was super friendly, allowed me to take pics, and when I asked her questions about how she became general manager, she explained her credentials with a bubbly attitude. I can't begin to count how many times I've come here. Every time has been great. Service,food, and atmosphere is always consistent. The tomato bisque is tart and flavorful with the crisp, cheesy baguette perfect for dipping on the side. I love that you can do a half salad(still a good size),and my favorite for that is the chicken Caesar - The Best I've ever had! Only pet peeve about the salad? I can no longer order a side of their champagne dressing for my Parmesan crisp(BOOO!!). Yogurt parfait, cherry chunk cookie, tomato jar, pizzas,any of the paninis..... Countless options!! If you have a food allergy of any sort, they will take the time to explain which foods you can have, which ones you can alter, and which ones you cannot eat. Wait staff are very friendly as well. I love this place, I've been coming here for years! I use to work in the mall so I'd come here for lunch and whine down for an hour. I've had a few things here but I always go back to the same thing, CILANTRO LIME CHICKEN SALAD....ummmm YUM it's so good. I love it! I've had their pasta which I liked and I would get shrimp instead of chicken that was always good. The soups are good and the sandwiches are just okay. I've had the margarita pizza and I love it. I've been dining at Nordstrom Café since the late 1980s in the Washington DC area. This version in Overland Park Kansas is no different than the other versions around the country. Simple format, cafeteria style line, friendly servers, and a meal that is sure to impress. No meal is complete at Nordstrom Café without a steaming cup of their tomato soup. This stuff is to die for and they even bottle the soup and have it available as you walk in case you want to take some home. Everything else is equally good. From paninis to salads, pizzas to other entrées, Nordstrom's café is well worth the time and hike to Oak Park mall on the third floor if you have a moment. Staff here are always incredibly friendly and willing to go the extra mile to serve you. This is no different than the other employees at Nordstrom's who are expertly trained in the art of customer service, a lost art in today's instant gratification world. Beat the crowd and arrive either early before the lunch/dinner rushes, or later in the day after the rush. My only struggle is some of the clientele who expect everything to be given to them. There's a sense of entitlement among some patrons which is a little disgusting. This goes with the territory and you might have to bite your tongue a time or two upon seeing a line cutter or someone else trying to get extra service when they're just like every other patron here. Overall, an excellent value for the food and a tremendous way to spend an afternoon or evening. read more

It is a cafeteria style restaurant, but the food is nothing like a cafeteria! (I just looked at nicoles review, I sound like a broken record, but when it's good, it's good!) While shopping at Nordstrom, a sudden case of "hanger" swept over me. My sister suggested we eat at the Marketplace Cafe on the 3rd level. Ummm...what? Have lunch in a department store? I can't believe in a mall where there is a noisy food court this place even exists. We finally got a chance to try the cafe. Tucked away on the third floor of Nordstrom is an excellent place to eat. Great decor, comfortable seating, served up cafeteria style with table side service -a really nice place. The menu is eclectic, can be light except for the cupcakes, and very good quality food. Service was great. We had the Nicoise salad. It was excellent. The best salad I'd had for a very long time. Couldn't resist the cupcakes and tiramisu. This was almost going to be a one star review, but our server saved the day! The hubby and I stopped in for a bite to eat while at the mall and overall, we were not impressed. The prices here are not prices you would associate with cafeteria style ordering, but that's really what they have here. You grab a tray and then choose what you want. They'll hand you some stuff that you carry to your table and other stuff they bring out when it's ready. I started out with the tomato basil soup followed by the seared ahi tuna salad and the hubby had the turkey and cranberry sandwich. The soup was really pretty tasty and I definitely wish I had stopped there. My hubby said his sandwich was no better than what you could find at QuikTrip and complained that it was too small to fill the black hole that exists where his stomach is supposed to be. When my salad arrived, I was immediately disappointed to see that my seared ahi tuna was not seared, but pretty much fully cooked. And there were literally only four small pieces of tuna. The salad itself was strips of cabbage, carrots and red bell peppers plus noodles. Huh? Yeah, it was chock full of the slimy little suckers, but the color and shape of the noodles pretty much matched the cabbage, so it was hard to pick them out. I tried to make an effort to eat my salad, but it really was not good. And it was especially not $14.50 good. My hubby waved the server over and he seemed at first incredulous that I didn't like my icky salad, but then he agreed that the tuna was overcooked. He apologized and took it away returning about ten minutes later with another apology, my money back in cash and a free cupcake. This is what saved this from being a 1 star review. The fact that the restaurant did what they could to make it right goes a long way. I have to say that I wouldn't make a special effort to go back to the Nordstrom Cafe based on the quality of the food we were served, especially at the prices they're charging. But it's one of those places that I wouldn't balk at trying again if someone else in my party really wanted to go there. read more

I eat here regularly. My favorite meal is the strawberry chicken salad. When I have a craving for this dish I will stand in line for as long as it takes. I also really enjoy the tomato bisque. The restaurant is set up cafeteria style - all dishes are displayed to customers as they walk through the line - once ordered your food is made to order. Staff is knowledgeable as to what items are gluten free. Occasionally I can tear myself away from these standards to try something else on the menu. Honestly, I don't think I've ever had a bad meal here. Place your order as you pass through the line. Don't worry, this isn't like the Soup Nazi, the staff is all friendly and professional - they are used to waiting while people make the tough menu decisions. The food is fresh. The prices are fair. Absolutely wonderful. This was my first time here and I went for lunch with my fiance. We walked in and were greeted warmly. We said it was our first time here and were given a great explanation about how to order, an overview of the things they offer, how some of their produce is organic and/or bought locally. I had the turkey club panini which comes with kettle chips. It was the best panini I've ever had, hands down. I also had a red velvet cupcake and it was really good (although, to be fair, I usually don't get better than grocery store bakery cupcakes haha!) I will definitely be back. The only negative aspect of my experience was that I didn't know if I should tip or not. There was a server (?) who cleared away plates and asked if we needed anything else, but of course we got and paid for our own food and drinks... I didn't tip since I didn't have any cash and had already paid, however it seemed like a lot of people were leaving a couple bucks. I'd also like to mention that I'd say it's more in the $$ range than the $ range, but the lower end of $$.
