Stopped by for lunch today and had the salad bar. I don't typically enjoy buffet style places because most of the produce is already going bad. That was not the case here. Everything seemed fresh and well washed. Tons of variety from green salad to pasta salad and desserts. I loved the green chile corn soup. Our waiter was very attentive and prompt. We went there for lunch on 8/7 and I had shrimp scampi, and the shrimps had very strong chemical taste, and I had no idea what that was; it was just not natural shrimp taste. This is mid level steakhouse. And when they say seafood they mean fried shrimp and a couple kinds of fish. It's a restaurant for the masses with a huge, eat as much as you want, salad bar. I ordered prime rib which they are "known" for. It was a big lump of medium rare meat, no fat cap or that yummy, tender meat along the top edge. And I added on grilled shrimp which was dry and way overcooked and about a U 31-40 size. Best thing about our meal was Aris, our amazing server. Salad/soup bar had a ton of options and was great! I was a little disappointed with the seafood selection as majority was only fried. I went with some coworkers and they said their meals were good. This is a comfortable restaurant. I had the tried and true 12 oz prime rib with French fries. I had a pre dinner Caesar salad which was delicious sorry no picture. I nibbled on the small home made dinner loaf. Waiter Erik was very fast and friendly. A buddy joined me late. We shared a three layer chocolate cake a la mode. In the area to visit my brother for the holidays, after a long frustrating flight, he suggests dinner close to the airport at Cattle Baron. It is old school - prime rib & steak & potatoes restaurant. I don't partake in salad bars usually, but they have a decent one with soups, salads and desserts. I asked for prime rib, medium rare, and it was tender and juicy, perfect. This is a great restaurant. My wife and I stopped in for an early dinner. We were amazed at the salad bar. There are a ton of different salads. A beat salad, a couple of different pasta salads, macaroni salad, carrot salad, pea salad, and more I have not named. All were delicious. By far the best salad bar we have been to in a restaurant. And all salads we are were fantastic. They also have a sunset menu which I never heard of before. It is a smaller menu that had deals from 3-5. I had grilled catfish that was spectacular. I visited this Monday and our server was Linda. I had never received such poor service in all my prior visits. I went for lunch with 3 clients and the service was so poor I was embarrassed. Will never take clients here again. Our server passed out the plates as if she was dealing poker. We had to move out of her way when she would rudely cross in front of us to clear plates or bring our drinks. She was short with my clients and not courteous at all. Just had lunch here and it was good. I can only speak to the salad bar because that is what I had. The soup was posole and it had a really good depth of flavor. Then I had a big salad. The salad bar had lots of items not on your typical salad bar such as potato salad, various pasta salads and 2 different soups. Everything was good including the service (I sat in the lounge area). The salad bar is always really good but I didn't have luck with my last visit ordering off the menu. I ordered the Jalapeño Chicken for a late lunch yesterday. The rotisserie chicken was dry and the mashed potatoes were cold. The highlight of the dish, and what gives this restaurant a 2nd star, was the gravy and "onion rings" that accompanied the underwhelming chicken and potatoes. The onion rings were excellent, crispy and well seasoned, although difficult to eat. They were more like fried shoestring onions than actual onion RINGS. I ate them with a fork. The service was decent although the cloth napkin wrapped around my silverware was clearly unwashed and saturated with someone else's food... I gave my 3rd star solely because I vaguely remember eating a Cajun chicken alfredo dish with artichoke hearts here some 7 years ago and thought it was God's gift to pasta. read more

I enjoy this restaurant for the salad bar, it's always fresh and has plenty of options. There's also choices of soup. On this day, they had posole. We splurged on steak, New York strip to be exact. It wasn't as appetizing as I expected. The meat was grisly, it had more than the average amount of fat. Being a steak place they should be more diligent about the quality of meat they serve. The chicken fried steak was huge, but the gravy was awful. I asked for another serving of gravy and it was equally awful. The fresh bread was a huge hit. Considering it was Mother's Day, our wait was only 20 minutes. Our server was very attentive. However, we were seated by the bar with a very boisterous bartender. I came here for lunch after hitting the gym, to eat healthy, and I was really impressed, they have a salad bar with everything you can think of, I loaded my salad plate with about 2 pounds worth of greens: lettuce, green & red peppers, jalepenos, hard boiled eggs, bacon bits, cheese, croutons, mushrooms, cucumbers, and then used this awesome Jalepeno ranch dressing, bottom line Cattle Baron is worth the trip, and they also have a great Prime Rib. I know! Yet another steak house. But this one was different because it had the best salad bar I've ever encountered! Everything under the sun you could think of, and then some. I went back twice and still wished I had room in my tummy for more. The decor is nice and woodsy. They have a nice open bar area too. The service was good. The lemonade wasn't so good - I could taste that it was made from powder :( It was in our hotel parking lot so it made it easy to walk over. The wait was about 15 minutes for dinner on a Tuesday evening around 8:00 p.m. so they do a good business. I'll go back when I'm in El Paso again. read more

Like I've said, if your gonna be a steak house you have to know how to cook steaks. And tonight, this place failed epically. We went to celebrate Mexican Mother's Day so the whole family met for dinner. My mother-in-law ordered her steak well (usually damn near burnt). However, chef cooked her steak raw so we sent it back. My wife (you guys know how she reviews) order a ribeye medium rare. It came out well so we also sent it back. The side of asparagus was tasteless and wilted. Even the bread was hard and obviously was of the "we ran out of our good stuff" variety. And if it couldn't get worse, the kids' beef patty was seasoned as if for an adult --too much pepper for a small child. One good note, my prime rib was good but by then, the wife was demanding a 1 star review. Annika our waitress did her best to make up for the kitchen's lack of effort (she really was nice and we left her 20%) and even the manager came over and apologized. But over all, the dining experience was doomed and no amount of schmoozing could bring my wife from the brink. What sucks is that this place is a lunch standard. Ate there twice last week as I was staying in the Raddison next door. The beef is very good (burger and prime rib) at very reasonable prices and healthy portions. The salad bar may be the hit of the place. Huge and well stocked with bread and soup as well as an array of toppings. Its included with most all entrees. Service ok, but not over the top. I have lived in El Paso all my life and I must say, after all the years of hearing about how AMAZING Cattle Baron is, I can't say that I was missing anything. The only saving grace was the salad bar, minus their flavorless pasta salads. I ordered the "Rio Pollo" and for $14 bucks I was expecting a nice presentation or a hearty helping. All I got was a piece of chicken slapped on a plate with rice spooned on the side on a cheap plate. By that point, I wasn't excited to be there. I choked down the chicken, and ate one bite of the rice only to spit it out because of how disgusting it was. Old and sour. The service was the worst part of the meal, if you can believe that. Our server came by 5 times. 2 of those were to check to see if we had paid the bill, and not to offer refills. My drink had been empty for 5 or 10 minutes until we found the water pitcher and served ourselves. This place is pitiful, save your money and time. Unless you're a vegetarian and want to enjoy their salad bar. read more

My husband took me to Cattle Baron's for our wedding anniversary. We visited once and won't be back. The steak we both ordered was average at best. Most people rave about the salad bar ...maehhh, it could have been worse but quantity still does not equal quality. Run of the mill dressings, average no more no less. The place was busy. The turn off was the waiter. A continuous "can i get you anything else" apparently was code for "get out of here, I need the table, here is your check". Family Dinner. We ordered kids burger, chicken fingers both with sweet potato fries, Rio Pollo and I had the salad bar. The establishment is set up for family or business encounters. The salad bar has the traditional items for a salad set up. It also has pasta salads,fruit bar and sweets. The soups of the day were egg drop and green pozole. Out of all the items, the pozole stood out. The burger and chicken fingers traditional no biggy. The Rio chicken was spicy hot and juicy in some areas. I've been in for a dinner 5-6 times and usually leave happy. I love the salad bar and have on a couple occasions just ordered that and left full and satisfied. There are plenty of options and everything seems fresh. If you're not a salad bar person, you do have the option of getting a caeser salad brought to your table, but that just seems insane. That salad bar is huge and packed full of yummy options. My favorite thing by far is the zucchini, I don't know how they prepare it but it's fantastic! My favorite dinner is a chicken breast with cheese and hatch green chilies It's cooked perfectly every time and there's always enough left over for leftovers. The guys I always come with get steak and even though I'm not a steak fan, it always look great and they rant and rave. There's an older thin lady who works in the bar area, while she often seems overworked and stressed, we're always happy to get her. Salad bar (comes with entree) - HUGE fixins for a salad and awesome potato salad! I loved it!! 2. Bread (comes with entree) - DELISH. i'm a huge fan of bread and butter, so the bread was especially good. 3. Prime rib - This was medium rare, but it was too over seasoned. I got 2 different steaks at 2 different times and they were both great I did not get the prime rib only because I don't normally get it anywhere. The loaded potato was fantastic. First things first, I would like to note that the ambient in this restaurant was extremely noisy. With a mixture of kitchen sounds, country music, and loud voices, the noise was so loud, I couldn't hear the person next to me. Aside from that, the food was horrendous, I ordered the "chop steak" as my entree with a side of sweet potato fries. The "chop steak" was RAW even though I ordered it medium well. It had absolutely no flavor, to the point that I had to add a tablespoon of salt (something I never do). The steak was also extremely soggy because it was accompanied by a "gravy" (if you could call it that) that was bland and flavorless as well as inconceivably watery because it had a off balance ratio of water and other ingredients. In the end the only thing that I finished was the sweet potato fries which were average at best. Given that I'm writing this review at the moment that I'm in this restaurant I wouldn't be surprised if I came out with some sort of stomach virus. I can assure you I will never be coming back and I hope you save your money and eat somewhere else rather than this overrated "steak house". read more

We tried this place at the recommendation of the hotel clerk where we were staying. I got the filet and it was woefully subpar. I requested med-rare and it was rare, so I sent it back, but it still was too rare in the center and tough to cut w/ the knife, too chewy. I did not finish my steak I was so disappointed. Not the melt in the mouth tender that I experienced at the Texas Roadhouse in OKC. Salad bar had some good selections, but I was bothered by the seriously wilted lettuce leaves I had to pick out of my salad. I'm giving it 2 stars since the other diners in our group thought their steaks were okay and would probably give the Barron 3 or more stars. Me, 1 star is all this restaurant was worth and I would like to express my condolences to the folks in El Paso if this is one of the better steak houses. I did see a Texas Roadhouse along the freeway and if the delicious filet I got in OKC is norm for the Roadhouse chain, there is hope for El Paso. read more

Stopped in at Cattle Baron since it was near my hotel. Wanted prime rib but they were completely out at 9p. Salad bar was good and had all the things you would expect and some extras like pasta salads. Ended up with the bacon wrapped filet and vegetables. Filet was good but not a lot of seasoning on it and waitress didn't offer any steak sauce or horseradish. Vegetables were steamed and not flimsy or too crispy. However, there was no seasoning or butter which left them a little on the bland side. It wasn't bad and I'd eat there again but a little seasoning on everything would have put it over the top. read more
