It used to be that Cruces was small enough that there really was only one place you could go for a NICE dinner (and by nice I mean the kind you dress up for) without going to a country club. Cattle Baron was it. They have a good happy hour. Their salad bar is fresh, but unoriginal. Their steaks are decent. But the only folks who are going to confuse this place with five-star dining are those who never stepped out of Cruces into a foodie city. The menu is ordinary. The ambiance is more elevated than most eateries in Cruces, but it does not have a very cohesive or polished interior design. For a date night, I'd recommend Lorenzo's. For a place to take a client, there are now other options (Lemongrass, Double Eagle, Lorenzo's all come to mind). To take out of town guests? Not this place. There's nothing really unique or special about it. In short, for the kind of restaurant it is trying to be (higher end), it falls way too short. read more

I don't know why they received anything less than a 4 star. I was pleased with my meal. I travel a lot for work and I am glad I ate here. I would eat here again any day. Went to Cattle Baron for lunch today. This is usually a favorite place to eat. However, I didn't get waited on for 10 minutes after being seated; the new waitress forgot to bring me some limes for my iced tea (had to asked twice); she also forgot to being me some bread (had to asked twice); she didn't refill my drink; and she was extremely slow. Not sure if waitressing is her true calling, but hope she find something she is good at. read more

My husband and I both were craving a salad for dinner. Maybe it was due to driving thru the hot desert all day but it just sounded refreshing. Our hotel provided a list of recommended restaurants and the Cattle Baron was listed as the go to place for steaks (makes sense) and salads. Hmm ok why not? We were not disappointed and neither will you be! The restaurant itself is classy but you won't feel bad rolling in wearing your jeans. We were seated by the window where we were treated to a spectacular sunset while we ate. Everything on the menu looked great so we ordered the Green Chili Wonton appetizer to go with our salad bar. Ok I can't say enough about the food here. The wontons were AMAZING! So tasty and crispy and melt in your mouth delicious. The dipping sauce and ranch that came with it was perfection. The salad bar - the star of the night. There were so many topping options I didn't know where to begin. They had spring salad mix, spinach, carrots, bell peppers, onions, garbanzo beans, red cabbage, hard boiled eggs, cheese, bacon bits, pepitas, croutons (I know I'm missing a bunch) and tons of dressings to choose from. Their ranch was the perfect consistency and a touch sweet maybe? I can't describe it but it was great. And to top it off we got a load of bread to snack on when we sat down. I had the prime rib in March '18 & it was fantastic but I've been back twice in 2 months that I ordered the prime rib (June & tonight). Sent it back both times. Cooked perfectly but both times the meat was tough. I cook prime rib on my grill several times a year & it is far better than Cattle Barons lately. Very disappointed because in March it was the same excellent quality of beef they are known for. I don't know if they are buying cheaper loafs or what but I'm out for now until I hear the quality meats are back. Sad. read more

We pass through Las Cruces every other year, and for several trips now we've been eating at Cattle Baron. Last night I had the New York Strip. That's my favorite cut of steak. I've had a NY Strip at Ruth's Chris, Fleming's and Morton's. Last nights was better. Don't get me wrong, the other places are high end premium steak houses and they definitely do some of the things better, but ultimately they are all steak restaurants and even if it wasn't 1/4 of the price of the others it's still a better steak at Cattle Baron. Sometimes nothing will do but a steak dinner. I decided to stop at Cattle Baron after walking around Mesilla Mall. I walked in the door and noticed that it was quite dark inside. That's usually a bad sign for a restaurant...it leads me to wonder "What are they trying to hide?". Also, I felt the place was very musty as well. I was seated promptly by my server. He gave me the menu and came back shortly after to take my order. I ordered a medium ribeye steak, and he suggested I try the "special" steak cooked in some oddball flavor of butter. Sounded fine to me, so I accepted his recommendation, and he told me that I could have everything I wanted from the salad bar. Now a word about the salad bar at Cattle Baron. I've heard people talk about the "fantastic" salad bar at this place for years. I've seen reviews where people crowed about how great it is. Here's the truth: it's a smallish salad bar. It's got a pretty good selection for it's size, and is quite decent...but it's far from fantastic. However I put together a pretty decent salad, grabbed some crackers, and proceeded to munch very contentedly until my steak arrived. The tea which I had ordered was not the best...in fact I'd say it was below average and tasted a little old. I hate "flavored" teas, and that's what they had at Cattle Baron that day. Oh well, water is free. The waiter, who was very polite and attentive, arrived with my order. The steak was cooked EXTRA well done, as opposed to my order of medium. Not only that, the steak had an unpleasant burnt flavor from the butter. It had been cooked at too high a heat for too long. In order to eat the thing I had to use ample quantities of Heinz ketchup. That's very bad...steaks should be able to stand on their own merit without backup from ketchup or A1 sauce. The waiter came back and asked how my steak was. I was very frank and told him it was a very poorly cooked steak and also told him the tea wasn't very good either. He apologized, and I responded "no need for you to apologize...you didn't burn the steak." He offered to take the steak back (it was about half eaten), but I wasn't really hungry anymore so I declined. I thanked the server for his attentiveness, and paid for the meal, leaving a generous 20% tip to the server. No need to make him pay for the cook's lack of skill. The quality of service was quite good, the salad bar was good, but the steak and tea were bad. Not inedible, but bad nonetheless. A steakhouse needs to serve good steaks. I don't care how good the service and salad bar were, I can't in good conscience give Cattle Baron any more than 2 stars. Hopefully they will hire better cooks in the future. Also, maybe they should throw out stale tea instead of serving it to customers. read more

Attractive, clean interior. Steaks are fairly good. The salad bar had a lot of delicious choices. Overall, a decent place to eat a steak. The prices are little higher than Texas Roadhouse. I had lunch here yesterday with a couple of friends. We decided to order the salad bar. All the salads were good. The New Mexico tomato bisque soup was excellent. They also had some fresh fruit and some dessert items. I just felt that $10 for the salad bar was a little high. Service was adequate. Wow ! After a long days drive, this place hit the spot! Both my wife and my dinner was fantastic. I had the Ribeye cooked medium and to my liking, great cut of beef. My wife had the Rio Pollo chicken dish and she absolutely loved it. She said it was very hot and spicy, but that is how she prefers it. The salad bar was great too. I always seem to get a house Caesar wherever I go and since our meals came with a salad bar, we indulged and thought it was great. If we are ever passing through Las Cruces again, we are definitely stopping here for our meal. read more

We were just passing thru las cruces and wanted a good dinner. We ordered a large ribeye with salad bar and baked potato. My husband had the catfish. Their entrees come with the salad bar as a choice of your side. It was an amazing spread. Our ribeye was cooked perfectly; not marinaded which I prefer but a fresh pepper flavor. It was tender and juicy. My husband loved the catfish with its light coating. Delicious! Great service. I wish we had more opportunity to visit. We would be regulars. read more

The service is OK at best. The atmosphere is nice and the food is decent. The prices are reasonable if not a little inflated because this is considered one of the "better" places to eat in LC. Great, upscale (by LC standards) dining! The service is generally of a higher quality than most restaurants in town. The steaks, which I tend to get often, are of good quality and are always cooked just right. My wife tends to get fish or chicken, and sharing with her, I have enjoyed those meals as well. So this steak house is near a mall they get a lot of the I'm an idiot customers when it comes to steak house dinner rushes. The food is solid I have to agree with one of the other reviews, it's a steak house you should try to stand out but the decor is nice and it's a pretty good menu for land locked NM. Las Cruces is a baby boomer town the baby boomers were buying up most of the property and retiring there so it does also cater to that crowd. My favorite cut is the ribeye I love a large rib eye all marbleized done med. rare. You can get one here when these guys are on their game. I used to live over in the Oregon mountains and enjoyed this place. My service was always good but I usually went in after all of the tourist, mall people etc. read more
