I am a huge fan of this place. I go there more than I can count a month. I enjoy the shrimp cocktails with extra hot sauce. The chips and salsa are the perfect beginning to a great lunch. I can't think of another sea food remotely close to here that compares. The only problem is the service. I am never impressed with the service. The women are rude and always in a hurry. read more

I felt the restaurant was fairly nice in ambiance (open, clean, and well managed) and had very pleasant service. The prices are some of the best around. Today I ordered their TACO ALAMBRE STYLE meal with a side chile relleno. The service and food preparation was quick and very pleasant. The chips were good (rate them a "B.") The red salsa was tomato based with onion, chile, and cilantro. It was not high level (rate it a "C.") The white salsa was a bit better and had tiny pieces of chile in it. (rate it a "B-.) The chile relleno was not bathed and was a bit soft. The flavor was a little weak. This was still not a great version of a New Mex chile relleno. Rate it a "C." The main meal itself came with a little tray featuring four lime wedges and two salsas...both of which were tasty and interesting. The meal was accompanied by four warmed tortillas wrapped in foil. As my meat I selected pork al pastor. It was grilled with red and green bell peppers, onions, and a couple sliced mushrooms, but I did not notice any bacon (which is traditional) which would have made the dish more flavorful. The meal was covered with melted cheese. The dish as a whole was well prepared and quite flavorful. I usually do not order tacos as I feel you never get a good filling of meat in them as opposed to burritos, but these alambre style tacos had enough filling to fill up six or eight tacos!!! A real deal. This was a very good meal. Rate the Alambre tacos a "B+." Thus, I had a very enjoyable lunch. All in all, I was very pleased with my dining experience at El Charro and I have revised my dining experience rating to FOUR AND A QUARTER STARS....meaning it is somewhere between very good and excellent. Although El Charro is not your perfect restaurant, I will be returning to El Charro more often in the future. It is now one of my "go to" places. I feel they've earned it.

I wonder if they have the same management and if they have improved their operation. If they have survived here a number of years that could be an indication that they might have improved. Alanbertos on South Solano is one of those places. So, today I dropped in for lunch. The inside seemed to be a bit different as far as the layout goes. Still, it remains a place for the most casual dining. It is an order at the counter restaurant and, let it be said, it is not the most tidy place in the world. It is ok inside but not an exciting place to dine to say the least. The young woman handling the front of the house was efficient enough but the service was overall just adequate...but, no complaints. The menu is extensive but mostly Northern Mexico meat heavy cuisine. There is little in the way of New Mex specialties. Today I opted for their QUESO BIRRIA TACOS WITH CONSUME. When the young woman brought the food to the table three tacos filled with birria meat and a little cheese were on a platter with a cup of consume, and some onions, lime wedges, and cilantro. Two bottles of salsa, one red and one green, were served alongside the tacos. There was only a plastic spoon on the platter, no knife nor fork. There was no salt nor pepper on the table. Inside each taco was a fair amount of birria meat with a smidgeon of melted cheese . The meat overall was tender but it did not have much flavor. The green salsa certainly helped in this regard. The real negative to the dish was that the tortillas themselves were soft and disintegrated as I tried to eat the tacos. The first and second tacos I was able to finish holding them in my hand but the third just fell apart as I picked it up and I had to consume it with my spoon (yes, that's right, my spoon as I was never given a fork??) This made for a somewhat UNPLEASANT DINING EXPERIENCE. The consume, on the other hand, was not fatty (the fat had been properly skimmed off) and it did contain pieces of birria meat. The flavor of the consume however was just so-so, not among the best. Thus, if the tortillas did not fall apart and had a decent texture I would rate the birria tacos at Alanbertos around a "B-" or "C+" meaning pretty pedestrian. But, considering that the tortillas did not have great flavor and totally disintegrated in my hands I must rate these birria tacos a "C minus." Below the norm! The consume rated a "B-." I left thinking that my previous rating of this restaurant from years ago was pretty much spot on. Things have not changed much over the years. Rate today's overall dining experience around TWO AND THREE QUARTERS to THREE STARS. Although Alanbertos is not a bad place to casually dine, I probably will not return. (But, who knows. I might want to try their "monster burrito " someday???) At the end of the day there are just too many superior Mexican food restaurants around Las Cruces to dine at Alanbertos on a regular basis.

We also got the large flauta for my son and the green beef (made with ground beef) enchiladas combo with beans and rice complete with the egg on top. These dishes were okay in my book. They open at 7 am every morning and they serve breakfast...can't wait to try it. This restaurant is pretty popular in Las Cruces as this is their 3rd location in town.
