Leaving work after a long day, I knew I wanted steak. I'm not from Roswell, so I had to rely on Yelp and Google to tell me what was available. Now the other alternative was Texas Roadhouse. Don't get me wrong, I'm regionally from where Texas Roadhouse was founded and it's huge, especially where I'm from. But part of my philosophy when traveling is to try someplace new, traditionally NOT a chain. So I gave this a shot. Cattle Baron reminds me of those old school steakhouses in the 90s that served steaks and an AYCE salad bar. Except it's much nicer ambiance-wise with a broader menu. I ordered the largest ribeye steak they had with a loaded baked potato, unlimited salad bar, a Coca-Cola, and a brownie for dessert. The total for ALL that ended up being $48.35. That's really cheap considering I had to be rolled out on a stretcher (joking). The most expensive item was the steak, in the $30-range but an unlimited salad bar for $4.95 and dessert for $6.95 can't be beat. The salad bar had everything you'd want in a salad bar with fresh veggies and toppings along with two soups, premade salads, and a sampling of sweet items like jello and fruit. I got 2 plates from the bar and two small bowls of soup. The steak and potato soup was good but the chicken soup was a bit salty for my taste. My steak and loaded potato was good and hit the spot. The potato was kind of dry, assuming it was a potato, already cooked hours ago and they just pulled it out to serve to me. After smothering it in butter and sour cream, the dryness disappeared. The steak was cooked medium rare, so no issues there but there was very little seasoning. I added salt and pepper to it, which made it a lot better. I wish it had a little bit more searing/char to it. I ended the meal with a brownie and ice cream, with caramel drizzle. The brownie was fairly large and warm, with a nice scoop of ice cream and ample ribbons of caramel sauce. It was really delicious and not too overly sweet! It definitely put me over the food coma edge. Service was good, but slow. My waitress explained to me that it was slow because a table of 39 people showed up, so she apologized. It didn't bother me though because I was so tired from working nearly 12 hours that day. I'm glad I supported local and my meal was definitely worth the price. read more

Hold on ... another road trip report? Yup, three members of the VA Creative Writing Group and three other authors traveled to Roswell, New Mexico, for an outreach program to read and discuss their writing at Eastern New Mexico University's Roswell campus. We spent the night and ate at what we think is the best overall restaurant in the city. No aliens were sighted, and we all ate well. Excellent beef served in a variety of ways (two outliers had salad). Excellent and friendly service. Nice interior dominated by the best salad bar in these there parts. When we walked in there was an extremely foul odor that reminded me of sewage backup. We waited 20 minutes to be seated. When we were seated the room only had one other occupied table. Why did we have to wait? I ordered the French dip when it arrived half the au jus was slopped on the plate making everything soggy before I could take a bite. As soon as I did, I was greeted by the massive salad bar with many tempting sides and veggies, and it seemed very well-maintained. Everyone in my party ordered something different. My husband got the ribs, my friend got the chicken fried steak and I opted for the Barrons Premium steak. While, I would say none of the dishes were particularly elevated cuisine. The salad bar is about the same, they no longer have the cheese that sat out overnight on it but they sometimes don't have carrots or cucumbers and the onion is giant rings instead of little pieces that would make sense for a salad. I've gotten the blackened chicken a couple times, it was good. The rio pollo was a bit salty. Bread can be fresh or stale, it's consistently inconsistent. This was a pleasant change up on our Carlsbad Caverns roadtrip. Our server Deborah was awesome, the interior retains classy western steakhouse vibes that you don't see in chain spots since the 90s. Their salad bar had a really great selection, and as a $5 entree addon is great deal! My prime rib was excellent, perfectly medium rare and felt like a generous 12oz. Kiddo loved his sirloin, and my dad enjoyed his Steak New Mexico. The green chili wontons were tasty although you already get so much food I'm not sure we needed appetizers. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted not with hospitality, but with the lingering scent of grease and decades of neglect. The floors are sticky, the tables are worse, and you'll start questioning your life choices before your water even arrives--which might take a while. Come on, Cattle Baron, surely you can do better! Bread served first was old, crusty, not in a good way, stale. Ordered Shrimp Scampi with Caesar Salad, broccoli for the side. Romaine lettuce in salad was literally brown. Waiter said, yes, we noticed that in the kitchen, just get yourself another salad at the salad bar. OK then. Meal comes. Plate is cold, so is the broccoli, won't even melt the "butter" that came with the stale bread. Pasta under the shrimp is cold and tasteless (garlic wine sauce???) Shrimp is almost room temp. Husband had the shrimp, fried, waaay too long, and a baked potato that looked half eaten when he got it. Again, the potato wasn't even warm enough to melt the "butter". This was a special occasion for us, and the $80. we dropped for a very unacceptable meal made the evening a disappointment. There was literally nothing about either of our meals that was good. Went in for a Sunday lunch at approximately 12:30 1/11/26 We were seated quickly. Evidently the waitress was on break where we were seated and it took 15 minutes or so for her to come take our drink order. She apologized. We had to ask later after several minutes of waiting for bread. Both my husband and I ordered the small prime rib. We were notified that only Well done and Med Well were available. We prefer med rare but took the Med well My husbands prime rib was okay but mostly a lot of hard crust and fat. His baked potato was small and dry. My prime rib was terrible. It didn't even resemble prime rib. It was thin and flat like a sirloin and curled up at one end. Very Well done hard and dry. I was going to make the best of it. I never return food. My husband insisted and sent it back for another. Management came over and said there was nothing else available. The only thing they could do is soak it in Au Jus to add moisture and that would take 20-30 minutes. They offered a rib eye but that would take about 20 minutes. The rest of us had already finished their meal. I wasn't going to make them sit around for 30-45 minutes while I waited on my food and to eat I just asked them to take it off my bill. I had ordered coffee and in all of this the waitress told me twice she would bring coffee and never did. We had to ask for bread twice it was never offered. We stopped into Cattle Baron for a steak while visiting town, and were a little disappointed with the meal. The steaks didn't seem to be great quality to us and weren't cooked very close to what we requested. The mashed potatoes were decent and the steak fries, while good, were closer to potato wedges. They were busy when we walked in, but asked to sit at bar. We waited for 10 minutes for someone at the bar to talk to us. Grace was given because it was clear that they were busy, but there was a strong sewage smell throughout that was hard to get past. We ended up decided to head out because the smell was so strong. A bar tender did approach us as we were leaving, but we told her we were heading out. The building owner should address the sewage smell immediately. We tried to go back in July as well, but someone leaving told us that the smell was bad, so our group made a plan B. We thought we would give it another try tonight, but not with that smell. read more

We got the salad bar and I got the prime rib, also. The prime rib was very tender and good. It's been a while since I've had one. The rice pilaf it came with and the bread , however, wasn't all that great. That was probably the only negative part about the food. I'd probably pass on both next time. The salads bar is great!!!! Haven't been to one since pre COVID times and I don't even think many exist anymore. I would go a million times just for the salad bar :) Good options! The service was nice, too. I don't know if all servers were like ours, but she was wonderful! Direct and honest. I tried to order a local cider and she steered me in a different direction hahahah. Service was excellent, no complaints there, but let me tell you about the food. It was a Friday night at around 5-530. Not busy at all, no wait times for a table. Firstly my son was super excited for the salmon, one of his favorites... They were out so he had to settle for Chicken Strips. My wife ordered a 10oz ribeye steak with a baked potato and the peppercorn topping. I ordered a Chicken Fried Chicken with fries and gravy on the side, as i do not like soggy chicken. So the food came out, first thing is my chicken was slathered in gravy, and my wife's steak was missing the peppercorn topping, the potato wasnt even hot enough to melt the butter, and there was no char or sear to it. It was literally light grey with some grill marks. I sent the chicken back, to be properly prepared. They took another 10 minutes to bring my wife's steak topping out, by that time the entree was luke warm. 10 minutes after that my chicken showed up, correct this time. Cattle Baron was one of the few sit-down restaurants we had for dinner time and boy does this place get packed! I can tell you that I was surprised and happy that they have a full-size salad bar that was open to feast on. All of our entire table each ordered the side of salad bar because why not? We haven't seen any of these places in so long that we were just wanting it badly. The salad bar had different types of cold salad, soups, and also a wide variety of fresh raw vegetables! Total fan right off the bat. Come to our dinner menu items they were heavy large portions and most of us couldn't finish it since we had the salad bar first. Most of the table got prime rib with a side of your choice I picked the baked potato because that's usually my favorite. But try some of my friend's onion rings and those were amazing! Tonight 1-17-25 was the absolute worst experience at Cattle Baron Roswell. We had a young female red head server that first we had to ask for 30 minutes for a beer for my husband and then 3 times for a soda for me. My food a 6 0z steak came out blood running across the plate. I asked for well done knowing I would get a little pink. We asked for a second beer for husband when she said she was going to take my steak back and get a manager. She was overly helping a table that had 4 adults and some kids and as she was about to pass my husband asked about my food again he was 1/2 done with his and that beer. She stated that she was really busy and I am getting a manager in a huffy childlike behavior. When a kitchen manager finally came with steak which was still not cooked (still very red all over and blood still on plate) there was no potato which she had taken when she took steak. That kitchen manager said they would remove the steak from ticket and get a managers and the potato . The young girl who was waitress then came to table with check and tried to apologize for being too busy and no manager ever came. Needless to say I never got the steak I wanted (I would have ate it a little pink had they fixed it!). I should not have left a tip at all. I will be calling there corporate office Monday to tell them that they really should review the staff they had on tonight and that young girl should find a new career! read more

My sister and I shared a 14 oz ribeye with loaded mashed potatoes, asparagus and their wonton appetizer. The best thing was the appetizer. Soooo cheesy and delicious. We didn't get a pic of the steak because we were hungry. lol!! The steak was decent but a bit chewy even though we got it medium rare. The mashed potatoes were awful!! Extremely dry and bland.
